i was sending this to a friend but i've decided it has to be everyone's problem so here's random information about a dragon age inquisition fanfiction i'll (probably) never write:

i have trouble with the solas romance because he kind of reminds me of my dad so. do with that knowledge what you will, but here's what i'm doing with it:

the inquisitor sees solas as a father-figure. importantly, solas views the inquisitor as a daughter, though he refuses to admit the extent to himself. instead i think he would refer to her as his 'apprentice'. this leads us to a few scenes that i think would be very tasty to write/read:

(obligatory spoilers warning; this has spoilers for inquisition base-game and tresspasser)

-inquisitor closes the breach and collapses, and solas sits by her bed while she sleeps/recovers, guilt making it hard for him to breathe. he's the reason that hole was in the sky, the reason this little elf-girl is sleeping through the sound of humans celebrating outside

-she wakes up and everyone's still celebrating and solas follows from a polite distance as she makes her way through the crowd with a smile planted on her face, checking in on everyone and agreeing that it's a relief that the crack in the sky is sealed

-they finally sit down - solas, cass, varric and the inquisitor - to a solemn celebration of their own, a pint of spiced and heated wine in each of their hands. and then the alarm sounds; the templars are attacking. cass and varric run off immediately but solas looks back at the inquisitor and she's staring in the direction of the gate with exhaustion in every line of her body. she meets his eyes, knocks back the rest of her drink, and finally gets up to go see what's happening

(all of the companions and advisors are going to have these moments that they catch the inquisitor showing her exhaustion and frustration. but they're at war, and she seems fine 5 minutes later, so they don't bring it up)

-inquisitor is recovering in that tent in the middle of snowy nowhere. solas is checking in on her every few minutes but always from a distance. he can't bring himself to get close to her, to see the mark his orb left on her hand. he hates the vallaslin on her face because it's the mark of a slave, but isn't the mark on her hand the mark of a slave too? intentionally or not, he's chained her to this inquisition. forced her to lead a force meant to correct his own mistake. and he can't even tell her because he knows she won't take his side in it. she loves the people around her too much, and they're all going to die when he rips open the veil.

-she performs perfectly at halamshiral, plants the empress's lover, an elf, in a position of power. gives their people back some of the power that was stolen from them (power solas stole from them, intentionally or not). and solas is proud - so damn proud. his apprentice (he can't call her his daughter, can't admit out loud how much he loves her) just took on the humans' Game and *won*. she would have done so well among their people, the original elves.

-and then she comes to talk to him after halamshiral and he sees the frustration in her face, the way her nose wrinkles just a little when he mentions how much fun it was to him. she's his daughter apprentice but she's nothing like him. all that power, and she's using it to do the best she possibly can for the people around her, even when she hates every second of it. when she sits on that silly throne and passes out judgement she doesn't react with emotions the way he once did. she's carefully considering, taking in advice from the people around her.

-fen'harel's weakness was that he tried to do it all alone. and he can't take credit for the inquisitor doing better than him by consulting the people around her where he didn't. she learned that all on her own, before they met. as a teenager in the hostile world that's defined by its lack of magic and the hatred of humans, while he slept in the fade and dreamed of a world he destroyed.

-also i need the inquisitor to slowly become angrier and angrier, bordering on unhinged. everywhere she turns is someone else asking her to do something for her and she's just so fucking sick of it. her keeper sent her to the conclave knowing how humans would likely react to a dalish poking around where they don't belong. she woke up with this shitty mark on her hand, surrounded by humans with swords, and was asked to try and close a crack in the sky that almost everyone around her thinks she put there. when the crack is partially closed people start calling her - an elf! one who doesn't even believe in the chantry! - the 'herald of andraste' and bowing when she enters a room. 'can you pretty please decide whether we're asking the mages or the templars for help here? also half of us will be mad at you no matter which one you choose'. and just. keeps going like that. over and over, worse and worse as time goes on.

-i want her to confront samson, the leader of the red templars, and throw her daggers into the dirt at her feet so she can tear the man apart with her bare hands. i want the people who are there to see that confrontation to stand back with a mixture of awe and horror as she rips the red lyrium armor from his body one piece at a time and then beats him so bloody that you can't tell where the blood ends and the red lyrium begins. i want her to stand over him as he begs for mercy and go 'where was my mercy? i was 14' and i want absolutely no one to know what she means by that as they all realize she knows everything about them but they know absolutely nothing about her. she was already 20-something when she joined the inquisition, and somehow doesn't consider that to be the worst injustice in her life?

-i want her companions to come back from watching her kill samson, burning with the question of 'what happened when you were 14' and utterly clueless on how to ask. this girl knows some of their deepest, darkest secrets, and they don't even know where she was when she was a teenager, let alone what might have happened to her
