Fooduary Day 10: Dragon's Beard Candy
Happy Lunar New Year!!! This one probably doesn’t seem very obvious but a white-candy version would be terribly unlucky!! (And I need all the luck I can get). So I tried to make the lantern slightly reminiscent of the treat while the character is styled in Han Dynasty fashion. According to the legend-history of dragon’s beard candy it was invented in the Han Dynasty (202 BCE 220 CE) which makes it our oldest dessert yet! And yeah, I went off script for this one. Day 10 was supposed to be Cinnamon rolls but I’m moving some stuff around because I so rarely get the chance to post something to celebrate.

If you've ever looked at a bit of crumbling drywall and gone "boy am I hungry right now" then meringues are the recipe for you. They're simultaneously very simple and very finnicky, but if you can get the hang of them then you can experience eating chalk (but sweet!) whenever you want, with none of the limestone content involved in eating real chalk. A batch of meringues is just 3 egg whites, (at ROOM TEMPERATURE) 1/8th teaspoon cream of tartar, 3/4 cups regular white granulated sugar, and a half teaspoon of vanilla extract. (or you could do a different flavor, if you like your conkrete to be fancy. I do not. I am here to experience texture with minimal flavor.)
You combine all the ingredients but the sugar in a mixer with a whisk attachment, and whisk at high speed until soft peaks form. Then slowly sift in the granulated sugar, whisking as you go. Once all the sugar is whisked in, keep mixing for another five minutes--the mix should be glossy and sleek, not dry.
Then pipe the cookies onto a parchment-lined pan, about two inches across, leaving an inch of space between. If you have fancy frosting tips and a piping bag, use them. Bafflingly, I do not have those (why? what have I been doing with my life that I own three machetes but not frosting tips?) so I just used a gallon ziplock with a hole poked into it and made beautiful little angel turd shapes.
They bake at 200 F for 45 minutes, and then should be allowed to rest in the oven for another half hour with the temperature off. Don't open the oven while they bake! Let them cool completely, and then you can eat something that has both the visual look and the mouth-feel of a packing peanut.
I love these things. I'll post an out-of-oven picture when they're done in like an hour.

Was talking to @kyannnite yesterday about how Jiang Cheng would be the type of guy who wouldn't want to adopt a small dog because he'd think it would make him look girly, but the second he got a shih tzu he would absolutely fall in love with it and braid its fur into elaborate Jiang hairstyles

ᨐฅ I have decided I'd like to try my hand at writing for the tale of food-- it's unfortunately not very popular so there isn't much fan content out there. I'm sure it'll gain more popularity soon though!
ᨐฅ fair warning though, I have not gotten very far into the story so the characters will likely be out of character. I will be writing my interpretations of the characters.
ᨐฅ also I'll only be writing headcanons [ like, bullet pointed hcs! ]
♪ ꒰Here come the characters I'm willing to write for!꒱ [more coming soon..!]
☆ Cat Ear Cookie
☆ Osmanthus Wine
☆ Yuxiang Pork
☆ Dragon Beard Candy
☆ Harbin Fried Pork
☆ Crab in Orange

☆ Dumpling
☆ Claypot Rice

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! There are a few items on this planet that are remembered as "fairground food" such as the corn dog, the turkey leg, and the giant pickle. But for this post, we are looking for something a bit sweeter. We are looking for...cotton candy! As we know it today, cotton candy debuted as "Fairy Floss"  concocted by the paradoxical dream team of a confectioner and a dentist.  It was sold in boxes then shown off at the 1904 St. Louis World's fair to a grateful populace. But what is cotton candy? Sugar! Flavored and colored sugar spun around in a special machine that turns it into thin floaty wisps and combined into one fluffy pillow of sweetness. How can you go wrong with that? Well, I'm not sure but regardless, cotton candy, fairy floss, sugar spider, dragon's beard, old ladies' hair, whatever you call it, it's wonderful all the same.
P.S. Maple sugar cotton candy is the best cotton candy.
P.S.S. My brother used to be fond of cotton candy ice cream.
P.S.S.S. I kind of miss fairgrounds and amusement parks right now.
P.S.S.S.S. Don't know if there were any points to these anecdotes but I typed them all the same. They did have to do with cotton candy so I think that is enough. Anyway, cotton candy, wonderful, bye now!
P.S.S.S.S.S. I just remembered/realized that cotton candy can look very pretty. This pleases me.

I love my lizard sooo much hes literally a bitch and he hates me and he hates being pet or held or looked at but hes also very careful not to bite me when I hand feed him and sometimes he gets into a mood where he really wants to come out and be held and released to run around the house
