Jimmy & Scots Folk Band: esce oggi “Seven Irish Nights”, secondo album della band, per l'etichetta Maxy Sound.

Verona, 24 febbraio 2023. A poche settimane dalla festa di San Patrizio, la Jimmy & Scots Folk Band pubblica l'album "Seven Irish Nights", in formato fisico e su tutte le piattaforme digitali: 9 tracce prodotte da Max Titi per la label Maxy Sound.

La registrazione dell’album presso gli studi Maxy Sound ha richiesto sette notti, e da questo è nato il titolo dell’album stesso, “Seven Irish Nights”. L’album contiene molti brani della tradizione irlandese e si apre con una versione folk della "All for me Grog", una classica drinking song già interpretata da band storiche come i The Dubliners e gli Irish Rovers.

Questo brano racconta di come il protagonista perde tutto ciò che è davvero importante nella sua vita a causa del Grog, una bevanda alcolica composta di acqua e rum (questa bevanda fu introdotta nella Royal Navy dal Vice Ammiraglio Edward Vernon nel lontano 1740). L'album prosegue con canzoni di guerra storiche come "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya", risalente ai primi del XIX secolo, quando le truppe irlandesi combattevano per la Compagnia Britannica delle Indie Orientali, e la "Erin Go Bragh", che esalta le gesta e il coraggio dei combattenti irlandesi durante La Rivolta di Pasqua del 1916.

Seguono canzoni più “festaiole”, come la "Seven Drunken Nights" o lo scioglilingua della "Rattlin’ Bog", alternate a brani più lenti e romantici, come l'immortale "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day", già interpretata dai The Pogues in una memorabile versione del 1985. Seguono l'inedito "A Stout for Breakfast" e, in chiusura, un medley di tre brani: Wellerman/Drunken Sailor/Dead Man’s Chest.

La Sea Shanty "Wellerman" è stata recentemente riportata alla ribalta dal cantante scozzese Nathan Evans che ne ha fatto una versione divenuta celeberrima sulla piattaforma TikTok. Il titolo è probabilmente riferito ai fratelli britannici Weller, famosi costruttori di baleniere, vissuti nella prima metà dell'800.

La Jimmy & Scots folk Band nasce nel 2013 dalla passione di due amici che decidono di fare un viaggio a Dublino nella settimana di San Patrizio. Partita come duo, nel corso degli anni diventa una band di quattro componenti che si esibisce in giro per l’Italia e l'Europa. Durante i loro concerti il palco si trasforma in un pub accogliente, o un veliero dove il pubblico può interagire attivamente tra una ballata e un reel.

Gli strumenti utilizzati sono: voce, tin whistle e chitarra di Thomas Randazzo (Jimmy); voce, bouzouki, banjo, armonica e chitarra di Adrian Justyn (Scots); voce, violoncello e basso di Luca Fiorito; voce, percussioni, batteria e bodhran di Jack Viesti.

Così ci raccontano l'album i ragazzi della band: «Ciò che ci affascina della musica tradizionale è come per secoli sia stata tramandata prima oralmente, attraverso le generazioni, e poi per iscritto fino ad arrivare a noi. È incredibile che un brano tradizionale irlandese come lo conosciamo ora sia frutto di un’evoluzione nel tempo, sia in termini di melodia che di testo, e di come possa essere arricchito ogni volta che viene interpretato da qualcuno. Per questo ci piace reinterpretare e mantenere viva la musica tradizionale e dare il nostro contributo a queste ballate immortali. Seguendo questa secolare impronta abbiamo deciso di presentare in questo album la nostra prima “drinkin’ song” originale, portando quelle tradizioni nel mondo di oggi e compiendo un viaggio musicale in cui speriamo di coinvolgere chi ascolterà Seven Irish Nights.»

Attraverso la rivisitazione in chiave moderna di questo patrimonio culturale, anche le giovani generazioni possono godere delle emozioni, dei momenti ludici o rivivere importanti fatti storici, attraverso il meraviglioso linguaggio universale della musica e, perché no, la convivialità di una chiacchierata con una pinta di birra bevuta al pub in buona compagnia.

If you’re not really into history, you may not have been aware that the 26th was the anniversary of the hanging of effigies on the Liberty Tree near Boston Common, 1763. It was an early instance of public resistance to treatment at the hands of unelected royally appointed officials in the wake of the Stamp Act. A bunch of us gathered at a friend’s home to remember this American tradition of protest, and hung effigies of our own as we drank rum punch, posset, cider, ...and Cheetos (take one wild guess why those were there). The effigies represented everything from the original effigy of Andrew Oliver to Mitch McConnell, student debt, the “straight pride” special snowflakes, ICE, unaffordable housing, Jair Bolsonaro, and less horrific things like screaming toddlers on our tours, the trash fire that is the MBTA, and the poop emoji. Our host retold the story of the Liberty Tree and we wrapped up the evening by singing “Fathom the Bowl”.
