― THE SHORT HISTORY OF VALERIA

Growing up in East LA, Valeria Sofía Ortiz hasn’t always had it easy.

With her mother leaving her at a young age, Valeria and her father had to fend for themselves early on. Her father, Alvaro Hernández Ortiz, only wanted the best life he could afford for his little angel, so he said goodbye to the gang life and opened up a mechanics shop.

Valeria developed an interest in the art of cars while helping out in her father’s shop and quickly found herself drawn to everything surrounding it. Noticing his daughter’s curiosity, Alvaro decided  to bring her out on the karting track for fun. However, he was surprised to find Valeria driving around the track in top speed and condition.

After that, he gave it his all to ensure his daughter’s return and started scavenging the scrap yards for kart parts while Valeria went around doing mini jobs, like lawn-mowing, to earn extra money to afford karting.

Facing a lot of issues as she climbed up the karting ladder, Valeria never backed down from a fight and oftentimes got into trouble because of it. But that didn’t stop her from dominating the track, gaining lots of attention from the media and the motorsport.

That’s when Toto Wolff noticed the girl, travelling to LA to check out the young racer and realising what potential she held. Becoming part of the Mercedes Junior Team, more and more opportunities opened up for Valeria as she entered the Formula world.

As she drove her way through Formula 3 and 2, she eventually got offered a seat at the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team alongside 7x world champion, Lewis Hamilton.

✼. THRU SPACE 'N TIME | PROFILE.

Born in Gold Coast, Australia on December 23, 1999, Michaela Sommers was introduced to the world of motorsports from a early age. Her father, Tobias, and his younger brother, Travis Sommers, were avid Formula racing fans who idolized the likes of Senna, Schumacher, and Lauda. The motorsports bug skipped over Sommers' older sister, Samantha, before biting her at the mere age of six. By her ninth birthday, Michaela was competing in karting championships along the Australian east coast.

Despite her natural aptitude for racing, Michaela recalls facing discrimination for both her race and gender quite early on while karting. Despite the negativity that would swirl around her reputation, the young driver would win her first national championship at the age of twelve with plenty of rumors circling concerning her future in the sport. Sommers would attempt to enter her first international competition, but was barred from entry after her father lost his job in the summer of 2012.

Without much hope, Michaela would step back from racing for nearly six months before eventually deciding to join her uncle who had moved to England after his marriage just years prior. Travis then became Michaela's manager, working endlessly to ensure his niece would be able to continue climbing the karting ladder. Shortly after her move to England, her uncle would connect with Australian F1 driver Mark Webber who would travel to watch her race in a regional competition in 2013. Stunned by her potential, Webber helped the young girl to catch the attention of a racing team competing in the Ginetta Junior Championship alongside future McLaren teammate Lando Norris. Sommers' transition to racing cars would prove successful, securing a junior championship at just 14 years old.

Sommers would continue working through the ranks, receiving extensive media attention and comparisons to Lewis Hamilton as a teenager. Spending one year at the Formula 3 level, Michaela would race for British team Jagonya Ayam in 2015 finishing fifth in the championship and second in the rookie cup, both below Charles Leclerc. Her performance would catch the attention of Italian team Prema Racing who signed her to development for higher formulae alongside Pierre Gasly for the 2016 season.

Despite an average result, ending her rookie season in sixth place, Prema would resign the Australian who would be simultaneously be selected to join the Ferrari driver development program for the 2017 season. That same year, Sommers would wrap up her Formula 2 season in second place, once again behind Charles Leclerc.

Eventually, Michaela would finally secure a Formula 2 championship in 2018 while signing on as a reserve driver for Ferrari. Her official Formula One debut came after Sommers signed on to be Alfa Romeo's second-seat driver for the 2019 season, securing one-point in her debut race before finishing her rookie season in eighth place.

Am I the only one who can’t see Lewis to Ferrari happening, like, at all? Hear me out...

It’s not just about the money, or the duration of the contract. Mostly, I think they clash too heavily in their respective philosophies. Lewis is a seasoned, established figure at Mercedes, and as such, he enjoys a lot of freedom regarding his commercial and personal image. He plays a role in the creative decision-making in the team. He says what he wants, he wears what he wants, he’s involved in several ventures and he generally has Mercedes’s support to do all those things. And then you have Ferrari, where The Brand always takes precedence, where maintaining a very specific kind of image is of paramount importance. Even now, when they’ve crossed the threshold and embraced 21st century internet culture and are seemingly actively committed to appealing to a younger social media audience, some things just don’t change. It’s undesirable and inconvenient for Ferrari to have a driver whose star power overshadows The Brand itself (a problem they’re arguably close to facing with Charles and his ever-growing popularity.) I mean, hell, they apparently had the power to pump the breaks on his fledgling leisurewear fashion company after he’d registered it as a business and started making and test-wearing prototype ‘fits. Allegedly because of the Ferrari x Puma sponsor deal that’s in place (I guess they let him design, or at least contribute to the design of the Monaco GP 2023 special merch line as a consolation prize but still.)

Second of all... it’s Ferrari. Contemporary Ferrari, who has endured a whole slew of disappointments and bizarre decisions and mishaps that have turned them into a meme. They seem to be unable to maintain consistency throughout a season (never mind a regulation cycle). There’s a lot of turnover at the team. There’s a lot of internal politicking, different factions pushing and pulling in different directions, often to the detriment of the racing team (something Seb himself has spoken about.) When Mercedes produces the third fastest car, they act like it’s a disaster. We’ve had Toto outright apologizing to Lewis for “what he has to drive.” You don’t get that at Ferrari: you drive the car available to you and you do so with minimal complaining. Sometimes, depending on who is in charge on the pitwall at the time (hello, Binotto 🙄) you might even get told that the car is fine, the strategy is fine, and you are probably the problem.

Ultimately it takes a lot of patience and a fair amount of brainrot to willingly subject yourself to that by getting on the Ferrari struggle bus. Charles and Seb for example always talked about how it was a childhood dream to one day make it to Ferrari. It was always a goal, the main goal, and not just a random career stepping stone. And even they often got chewed up and spit out and endured heartbreak and disappointment and betrayal. For drivers who don’t have a team bucket list... contemporary Ferrari probably isn’t worth the trouble tbh.

The latest batch of rumours that has been swirling in the midst of a slow news week suggests that Lewis would be signed to work alongside Charles, and not, as previously assumed, replace him (in what perhaps could be a direct Mercedes-Ferrari driver swap.) Even so... we’ve seen how they mismanaged Charles and Seb, and then proceeded to let Seb go arguably too early, so now we’ve got a lineup where technically nobody is an outright number one, nobody is an outright number two, and we lost a massive source of motivation, internal competition, and knowledge for Charles. Having to go through yet another cycle of “who gets to be number one” or, alternatively, boxing Lewis into a support role from day one (seeing as the latest Gazzetta article suggests Elkann still plans to build the team primarily around Charles as the lead driver), is hardly going to go down well imo.

We’ll see how this situation develops in the coming weeks/months of course, but I wouldn’t put much stock into the rumours. At best it would be a lateral step for Lewis—at worst, a downright downgrade.

It pains me to say but I don't think I've ever seen a fandom as toxic as F1, and I've been in some dark places regarding that. However I've never been into sports before, so maybe that's just how it is here. If that's the case – well damn. That sucks. That's disgusting. Those athletes are real people you know. If this is specifically just formula one then jesus fucking christ what the hell is wrong with this fandom in particular. Get your shit together.

I'm thankful for the internet bringing me up to date so quickly with this new fascination of mine but honestly I should probably stop looking at it online now that I have a general idea. It's just truly sickening. How can you treat the drivers and each other the way you guys do and still sleep at night? I'm genuinely not getting it. It's just horrible. I'll try to step out of this for now and just follow the races on my own.
