Breaching such restrictions places you at risk of fines up to $25,000. and/or Jail and if someone is injured you are liable. If you are having realty photos done by an unlicensed drone photographer or videographer, realtor etc., you are liable for any accident involving the drone and can even be sued for breaching the rights of others with images and videos including surrounding properties. Your insurance will not cover you as you are involved in an illegal activity by using an unlicensed drone operator and breaching Canadian laws and regulations.

NO MATTER THE SIZE OR WEIGHT of a drone when used for personal or financial benefit directly or indirectly, you must be licensed. The use of a drone, for example, capturing images and videos of a real estate listing, even if the operator is not directly being paid for the captured content, is still a commercial drone use as there is a benefit through the sale of the property and the content being used to aid that commercial activity. People taking images or videos to post on their personal social media and streaming sites is allowed but if those channels are monetized, you are now breaking the law and are subject to the above.

Also, a point of notation is that there are automatic NO FLY ZONES in place during natural disasters, wildfires and other circumstances which should always be respected. NEVER FLY A DRONE IN AN ACTIVE EMERGENCY RESPONSE AREA. not only are you risking fines, jail and financial liability, but you are also placing lives and property at risk.

Drone photography has opened many doors in the photography world.

Our Sprint Challenge tasked us to figure out how user-friendly the current Where to Fly a drone tool was and to prototype a solution for how it could meet the needs of recreational drone users - a new user group for our government partner, Transport Canada.  The first we had to do was understand the domain so we did some user interviews over the phone with drone users. Once we had a better idea of the space, we prepared a script and conducted user testing of the existing tool - at Civic Tech Toronto’s hack night. It was really exciting and brought a lot of insight into what drone users were looking for in a tool that gave them information on where to fly.
