2021 Resolution!

My resolution this year is to finally get rid of all of those single use items we use so often and replace them with reusable, natural, eco-friendly alternatives!

So it’s only the third week of January but so far I have swapped...

DIY Zero Waste Dryer Sheets

I love, love, LOVE this DIY laundry detergent I made back in November (the original batch is still going strong!)  But to have a truly zero waste laundry room, I figure I’m still missing one or two important elements, one of which is dryer sheets.

I knew synthetic fragrances weren’t great, but this article about the hazards of using dyer sheets by Get Holistic Health was definitely an eye opener.  Beyond containing synthetic fragrances linked to asthma, dryer sheets are jam packed full of a whole host of other toxins tied to such disorders as liver disease, neurological issues and cancers. These chemicals are terrible for the environment and the plastics in the sheets themselves guarantee the sheets are not biodegradable.  And how’s this for a stunning fact: some dryer sheets contain CHLOROFORM (you know the stuff the bad guys in movies saturate cloths with before pressing them to their unsuspecting victims’ noses to make them pass out).  Whaaaat? But enough of the bad stuff, let’s make our own zero waste and non-toxic variety and say, “To heck with you old dryer sheets!”  This recipe is based on one provided by Wellness Mama. What you need (If you do a lot of laundry a month, you might want to make a larger batch): - A cute little jar - Some natural fiber fabric scraps (I used a 100% cotton dish cloth measuring about 28″ x 29″ and tore it into about 15 square-ish sections which will become my “dryer sheets”) - 1/2 cup white vinegar - 10 to 15 drops of essential oils (I used 10 drops lavender and 5 drops eucalyptus for a “spa blend”) 

Fold your “dryer sheets” into cute little squares and place them in your jar.  Mix your vinegar with your essential oils and pour into your jar to moisten your dryer sheets (you want them to be damp like wet laundry, but not sopping wet).  Use one sheet per load of laundry.  The beauty of this recipe is you can wash and reuse your dryer sheets multiple times.  When the sheets are worn out, compost them (since they’re natural fiber and all)!
