Happy Birthday, Sarah & Duck!

While it may not be as flashy as an anniversary art piece (though I may make a late one depending on how crunched I feel), I will just ramble and talk about things I like about the show to celebrate this milestone. I'll talk about what got me into the show, aspects I like, and some more personal thoughts on the show and maintaining this blog.

Intro

I was introduced to Sarah & Duck by one of my online friends back in the middle of 2022. We watched the first season together (though I only joined in halfway through), and then I found my own way to watch the rest of the show since I felt hooked. Since then, it's become my main special interest and is perhaps as strong as it had been back then. Last year, I rewatched and introduced the series to my closer group of friends, who I'd consider my "best" friends. They loved it. One of them even considered Sarah his "blorbo in law" (a character he cares about because someone else does) before having her graduate to a full blorbo (a character he likes). I'm very glad to be able to speak to fans of the show and talk about it.

Art and Vibes

There's something about the show's simplistic and scribbly artstyle that resonates with me. It's somewhat ethereal, and coupled with the mostly low energy happenings and accompanying soft, gentle music, the show builds up a very welcoming atmosphere perfect for the intended demographic of young kids. The style is kind of inspiring to me, and I often try to think of how exactly to emulate or adapt the watercolor-esque nature of backgrounds and scenery. Some of the scenes (like the one above) are pure spectacular and honestly surprised me with how nice looking they were on my first watch.

It's a very nice show for me to zen out to. The first watch-through, I was surprised with some episodes in the first series that they were already over. Those 6.5 minutes go by fast sometimes! In contrast, most of the shows I've watched prior were 20-45 minutes. It's a testament to the show staff that they can hold the attention of me, an adult, for that long. The show as a whole feels somewhat like a dream. An imaginary romp through a kid's life in the U.K. There have been some episodes where I could see myself doing the same pretend games and things that Sarah does if I were a kid. Watching the show felt like peering back into my childhood with nostalgic, rose-tinted glasses.

Characters

Sarah & Duck has quite the colorful cast, both metaphorically and literally. I honestly like how some characters just drop in or drop out of the episode's story sometimes, like Plate Girl showing up in Pond Princess. It gives the world a bit more genuineness; Sometimes as a kid, I'd only give a little bit of time for another friend before moving on with my own thing while playing.

While I do like the main trio of characters (Sarah, Duck, Narrator) the most, it's a tossup between Scarf Lady and Plate Girl for favorite side character. Scarf Lady is so chaotic and Bag balancing her out in exasperation is great, but I love how much of a gremlin Plate Girl can be, like in Garden Gaming.

While it does sort of bug the "character interaction" part of my brain, it's interesting that nothing about the characters or world is outright explained. Why does Plate Girl like plates? Why does Scooter Boy like scooters? Why is Scarf Lady so scatterbrained? Why are kids and bird paired up so often? Why are the Ribbon Sisters so adverse to talking? It provides more to the previously mentioned genuineness to the world. Unless directly asked, people don't really delve into why they are like they are. I think that adds a lot to the notion of personal interpretations.

I love AUs and reinterpretations of characters in shows I like just because I like to see how characters react in situations outside of their universes. Plus little headcanons here and there. As a small examples, I hc that Plate Girl is a collector of plates. I like little things like that, giving a little personal touch to certain aspects of the show. I've written a few fanfics as well just because I would A. Like to see how characters would react to other scenarios, and B. Because I like seeing the characters get up to more wacky shenanigans. You might even see my boy and his bird OC pair make an appearance on this blog, in addition to the humanizations and some other fan-episodes.

I am not okay about this series if you couldn't tell.

Emotions

Obviously, it's a kids show, and I don't intend to be all "this show is peak cinema" about it. It is good, I just don't want to seem delusional. Well, more delusional than usual...

But, honestly the show can be really heartfelt and touching at times. I felt bits of sadness and sympathy for Sarah in Duck Flies, as a person that gets very attached to characters/objects very easily, and Ribbon Alvida, made me cry real, actual tears. The message of "Sometimes you don't get to say goodbye to someone" is incredibly sobering and honestly a really good lesson to teach kids. I felt Sarah's pain very vividly, again, as someone that forms attachments easily.

The more upbeat emotional episodes are great as well. I felt a sense of coziness and warmth during Petal Light Picking, Christmas atmosphere is very calming to me.

Of course, I do realize the folly of only watching kids shows. Again, I don't want to seem like the person who exclusively watches kids shows and touts them as better than "real" shows. Doctor Who balances it out a bit. Fantastic series, loved Nine, Ten, and Eleven. Also tune in for a future post about Doctor Who, wink wink!

Personal Stuff and Why I Made its-a-ducky-mess

As stated before, Sarah & Duck was and is my special interest. And with my special interests, I obsessively indulge in them in any way that I can, looking over every stone and in every nook and cranny for unique things. That's part of the reason why I catalogued the animation errors and odd tidbits, because I think it's cool to see those things. I also like looking into the inner workings of things, like behind the scenes videos. I find those VERY fascinating to me, and oftentimes I use design philosophies and such to inspire myself.

My "mission statement" with my fixations I suppose is to spread the word and get people to know about them. I hope my passion for what I like is infectious and gets people to see the shows in a similar way that I do. I started the blog just to tell people about the show, and give facts or little tidbits to fans of the show who may not know the things I do. Oftentimes, I feel like I can't properly express or talk about my interests to my friends because they don't have the same level of "care" that I do. I know people will never like the same things you do at the level you do, but it's still something, and I'm trying to work on that.

My blog is also partly fueled by not letting the series "die" or "fade away". A little dramatic, yeah, but look at Sarah & Duck. It's a twelve year old cartoon for kids, and it's kind of obscure in the grand scheme of things. But I have such love for it that I wish it could continue on. And in a way, that's all we can do really. I would love more official Sarah & Duck content, but I am happy with what we got. If the show kept going, there's the chance that seasonal rot could've happened, and that idea sort of scares me. Anyway, the show's "time" is over, and we, the fans, are left to our own devices. That's not to say Sarah & Duck is forgotten, mind you. The social media posts and such, and even the recent event that put the show in theaters shows that the series still has life in it. And I'm okay with that.

Seeing new fanart, stories, other fans posting about the show, and otherwise engaging with it fills me with joy, honestly. To see the show have a fanbase twelve years later is heartwarming. All of your likes, reblogs, comments, questions, those are powerful inspirations to keep making content for the blog. Just recently with the Valentines post, seeing a number of accounts with Sarah in their profile pictures made me smile ear to ear. That's a lot of what I want. To provide for the fans, to make connections with them, to give a sense of togetherness within this little community, dare I say, fandom.

I genuinely don't intend to come across as a "savior" providing content in a drought, or acting high and mighty to seem more important than I am. I just like this little niche show and wish to provide quality content for its fanbase. The show means a lot to me and I wish to display that to anyone that wants.

I usually do the honors of appointment, mostly with the advice of Yves, whomever is an apprentice of the another court painter if the time calls for such things.

They are cases when I personally go scouting in the guilds either because one of members requested our audience or me and Yves requested their audience.

Since our technology here has advanced, my mod has showed me the sketch of Gilbert you created and you do have easier ways of contacting with me, I could arrange something with one of court painters for apprenticeship if time allows it.

two posts so soon?? no wayyy everyone seems to love their dynamic in penned in ink (deserved, i love them) so i decided to give you some fun, general hcs about the mean girls of all

warnings: swearing? i think thats it. wow, go me

they share a steady HBIC rotation

they respect each other so much but it will never look like it (bc seven forbid they show love and compassion and care in clown school, right?)

insults in this group = love. the more unhinged, the more it means they care for each other

aka if you try to break them up bc they look like they're going to throw hands they'll flip the narrative as if you are the crazy one for thinking they're genuinely fighting

do you see why these three are always split up in events now?

leovil are constantly using honey, dear, and sweetie in their arguments (derogatory)

once, when particularly annoyed, idia called them mom and dad bc 1. they remind him of his parents and 2. he hoped it would be weird enough to change the topic but no, leovil are running with it

there's made up lore about how idia was adopted. the story changes every time. so far, idias been a double orphan, picked up at a dumpster, cloned, picked up from the lost and found, and at some point he was biologically related to that fire lizard from frozen 2

leona regularly gifts idia super expensive jewelry. he receives a bunch of them and believes idia would have something better to do with them than he can (idia uses them for cosplay and hands some off to ortho because he likes the way it shines)

and the gifts progressively get very specific to idias interests but the chances of the court giving the second prince a custom headset (conveniently aligned with idias interests) seems relatively low

vil vehemently refuses the charity but will not say no to exclusive afterglow savanna garments (she wants to feel special and leona isn't thaaat opposed to it)

whenever someone offhandedly mentions that they got their eyes on something, its a race to see who can get it first

and bc vil is a sentimental one, his room is FILLED with trinkets and photos of his outings

leovil is always caught up on idias current obsessions, with leona knowing the key plot points and vil only knowing the names and faces

idia would not stfu abt this con and leovil didn't have time to pretend like it was annoying bc they do NOT KNOW who to go as (presumably idia just wanted to talk or maybe get one of them to go to the con for him but the girls were not having that)

like these two binged Idia's 'show of the month' and were having so much trouble figuring out who his favourite characters were, but ultimately settled for the main character and her friends

idia LOVEDD the surprise even though he has like, no clue who tf they were cosplaying (turns out leovil remembered the title completely wrong)

leovil were hella committed to keeping up their character while idia was too busy running around like an excited puppy

vil always carried around a bunch of tampons for his classmates but has a seperate pouch for leona & idia (bc they have nice patterned packaging. that's it)

leona's homescreen is a photo of them wearing mouse-ear shades. they all look so cool (leona has not revealed the lockscreen to anyone)

vil always lends his products to his friends because besties share everything (he even has specific formulas he's custom made for them! vil's never ever EVER gonna give them away tho bc then he wont have an excuse for an impromptu skincare session LMAOO)

leona's the designated everything holder bc idias backpack is always filled with random junk and his posture is terrible and he's the only one who can apparently 'treat vil's purse with respect' (he complains about it though)

even if they weren't important, i feel like if they got group kidnapped, they'd bully the kidnapper so hard that they'd be let go unharmed and the kidnapper would be in tears

leona has ALLLL the tea and it takes a swipe from idia to verify the facts. with rumours, vil can pinpoint exactly who is being talked about, down the the dorm, year, and class number

idia sits in between the custody battle for epel and jack DAILY. but the silly thing is whenever idia chimes in with a perfectly reasonable idea (like say, flip a coin), leovil suddenly get along again just to say it's a dumb idea (its not)

idia and leona have sibling solidarity and bc vil is an only child they exercise their sibling rights just to tell vil complete lies (aka, anything vil does, like sneezing, will receive a comment like 'if you sneeze more than 4 times a day, it means you're awakening a ghost')

and they're committed to the bit. idia will absolutely forge research articles and leona will claim his fifth-cousin-twice-removed had mysteriously gone missing because of it

when vil's feeling down they do not gas the queen up (she already knows it, hun). they let vil raid their closets to pick out their outfits for a photoshoot

when vil's not in the mood for THAT then its a code red. leoide will dress themselves up so good that vil feels underdressed so now he HASSS to go on their impromptu outing. peer pressure wins again

the gossip sessions over shaved ice or any kind of dessert go CRAZY in this trio, like they're so loud bc the tea is outrageous and you want to be mad but at the same time, go on, i gotta hear more

idias ideal hangout is a self-care day. they'll all wear facemasks and idia will do everyone's nails and they all gossip

sometimes idia will come up with a theory, like that sam is from another world, and vil will say it's bogus but ends up feeding more evidence for the theory

once vil beat idia in a video game (that idia was a pro at, mind you) on the first try and idia declared their friendship over

vil and idia are video game buddies but not past the AMs bc vil has a bed time (leona's still salty about the cats & videogames comparison so he only watches)

vil and idia fight over custody of ortho all the time but leona just uses the distraction to get ortho to leak all the juicy secrets

other than that vil and ortho are doing evil potion making aka finding creative ways go sneak veggies in leoides food

the trio never have any real drama so they always end up 'fighting' each other over the stupidest shit. like the way they tie their shoes, the typo they just made, or how loud they breathe

whenever one of them is seriously down, it's always a bad-cop/good-cop situation bc getting too serious makes these emotionally stunted losers feel icky

they do talk about their feelings though, but it never turns into a pity party

idia LOOOVES being dramatic tho and will set the stage for his sob story only for it to be that the cashier didn't wish him a good day

vil will use idia's lingo for the shock factor and pretends it never happened after and leona will pretend like he didn't like that his time got wasted but will reassure him. and by reassure i mean he stands w idia in line and says 'have a good day' to the cashiers so they'll say 'you too'

and no idc what u say, idia will chat shit about everyones crushes but will do one of two things: A. be besties w them if his friends end up dating and B. have a crush on the BAREEE MINIMUM

okay i joke a lot but leoidevil all keep each other in check and strive to uplift & become the best version of themselves

its three different flavours of self-hatred all communicating with each other

and they will still preach self-love (leona bc he thinks they deserve better, idia bc he gave up but that doesnt mean his loved ones have to, and vil bc he believes you will never be at a satisfactory point in ur life if you dont make amends with yourself)

btw they have a very elaborate plan to go to therapy together and a back up plan if they happen to end up at the ward instead

Speculation: NarraDad Theory

I've personally seen the assumption that the Narrator is Sarah's dad/caretaker quite a few times around the Sarah & Duck fandom. The question of if he's Sarah's dad is also common enough to be an autofilled Google question, akin to the question about Sarah's potential autism.

So we're going to take a little look into this theory. Admittedly it's not one with a whole lot of things to talk about, but it is a very present idea within certain fans.

Supporting Evidence

Obviously, Sarah, Duck, and the Narrator are never far apart throughout the entire show. The Narrator is never seen, but always there by their sides. This gives the impression that the Narrator keeps a close eye on Sarah and Duck, making sure they're safe, akin to a parent/guardian. In addition, they all share the same house, as both Sarah and the Narrator use "our" when referring to their home.

In addition, the Narrator has some of his possessions in the attic. Most prominently is the box of old toys in, well, Old Toys. Which judging from Sarah's shocked reaction of calling the Narrator's toys "really old", she at least has somewhat of a frame of reference for the Narrator's age despite him never making a physical appearance.

The Narrator is also of course kind and supporting of Sarah and whatever she decides to do in her day to day life.

The Narrator is proven further to have a physical presence despite never appearing once. He comments about waiting on his own after Sarah and Duck play while Cake is baking during Cake Bake. Also in Cake Bake, the Narrator is shown to have purchased the roller skates to gift to Duck. When the timer is done, Cake is already taken out and placed on the countertop, assuredly by the Narrator, as allowing Sarah, a seven year old child, to do so would be seen irresponsible. And during Constable Quack, Sarah and Duck look suspiciously towards the Narrator when they find their biscuits missing, indicated that he can in fact eat.

From a couple of perspectives, I've heard people propose the idea of the Narrator recording home movies with a camcorder in-universe, which is what we see as the episodes in real life. This would make sense, as the cameraperson wouldn't be seen under most circumstances. I personally remember watching some of my family's recordings on an old camera, and my parents manning the camera never panned to themselves. (My word is not gospel, however.) On a stranger note, fun fact: The Narrator isn't shown buying a movie ticket during Cinema Scoot, yet is present throughout the episode. It may be possible that he lagged behind the kids and bought a ticket of his own, before catching up to them a minute or so later.

Contrary Evidence

Sarah never refers to the Narrator by any sort of proper title, such as Dad, Pa, etc. In fact, she never refers to the Narrator in conversation at all. She never initiates conversation with him with any sort of greeting or sentence starter; No "hey", "hi", not even a "you there" or the like. Sarah only listens to him for as long as she needs to before talking to other people nearby. She also only directly asks the Narrator questions without any aforementioned sentence starters.

And perhaps most dismantling is an interview with series director and co-creator Tim O'Sullivan. One question and its response from this interview is directly as follows:

"Sarah and her friends live alone, parent and family free. The children are as mature as the adults; Scarf Lady and Sarah are equals. The narrator (voiced by actor Roger Allam) will often give Sarah advice, but just as often he watches as Sarah solves problems on her own. It’s a brilliant approach that feels a bit risky – kids living alone, no parents around. Was that an easy decision to make early on? Did Sarah have parents in early drafts of the show?

Thinking back we never even considered the parents. As a kid, I remember that feeling of living in a world of your own outside of parents; when you played that was the universe and the parents only broke the illusion when the fish fingers were getting cold. So when focusing on the imaginative adventures of child and her friend they weren’t deemed a necessary presence.

However, Narrator is always there, not to get in the way, but essentially play along like a parent behind a video camera and provide that sense of security that allows our characters to explore freely."

Of note is that Tim O'Sullivan says "like a parent" when describing the Narrator, even off-handedly using the video camera line as well.

Closing Thoughts

While the Narrator isn't and never was considered to have a parental role, I think it's a sweet interpretation of the character, hence why I said I was a "NarraDad truther" in another post. Depending on how you read between the lines, you could say Tim O'Sullivan never outright explicitly said "the Narrator isn't Sarah's dad". To be fair, it was kind of close to what he said.

This post is not intended to sway anyone to either side, as I believe fans should be free to interpret characters however they want so long as it's not problematic. I simply wanted to talk about the theory.

• That being said, he gets distracted towards the end. Petting your feathers, admiring their color

• “You’re so prett—pretty feathers! You have pretty feathers! Aha.” Lucifer’s nervous chuckle fades as he focuses once more

• He’s more than thorough, quadruple checking his work and asking if you feel better yet

• (Tell him he did a good— no, a great job)

• “A thousand times better, thank you,”

• “Just a thousand?” Lucifer grins cheekily

• “Alright, alright, a million. And here I was worried you’d get a big head over it.”

• Surrendering his hands, Adam turns and leaves, swearing that would be the end of it until your bitchiness subsided

• It’s not like it bothers him to see your nose scrunch in pain or dragging your hands down your face in irritation

• He blames you for turning him into a liar

• “If you make it weird—!”

“Yeah, yeah, you’ll hit me or something. Try being original next time. Now shut up so I can help you. Fuck, you’re just as bad as Lute.”

• Adam is eerily silent. In the mirror you can see his tongue poking out in concentration

• He’s uncharacteristically soft when handling your feathers

• “There,” He dusts his hands together, “Now you can’t say Adam never did nothin’ for you.”

• Fucking flabbergasted when you thank him. Outloud. Oh, you’re never living this down

• You didn’t know she knew the meaning of the word gentle until now

• Lute is diligent in all she does

• For the briefest, most minuscule of moments she thinks she has a grasp on sin. As innocent as it is, she’s not supposed to be helping you

• She won’t let you ruin her reputation

• She doesn’t dare let her fingertips linger on your feathers (no matter how loudly they sing to her)

• Lute acts as if you’ve burned her when she’s done

• “Thank—“ She’s already storming away, cheeks glowing red. From anger, embarrassment or other, you’ll not find out today, “—you.”

• Honestly, she wasn’t going to offer at first

• Vaggie would prefer to forget about her time in Heaven altogether and helping you with your wings proves triggering, though not so terrible she can’t

• Not when the need to help outweighs her guilt

• You look so damn pitiful!

• “Here, hold still,” Vaggie sighs softly as she approaches

• She waits for you to go relax and accept the offer hanging in the air before touching your wings

• Vaggie’s touch is sweet and hesitant, almost treating your feathers like you’re made of porcelain

• “You ok?” She asks as she twists her fingers around the hardened shell, breaking the pin feather

• You smile at her over your shoulder, “Yeah. You’re much better at this than me.”

• Vaggie breathes out a light laugh, “I’ve had more practice. It’s… easier with someone else too, I guess.”

• Significantly less nervous when she’s done

•Next time, she’ll definitely offer her assistance sooner

• He startles you, making you jump when you thought you were alone

• Husk, although he’ll deny it to his double death, made it his job to pay attention to people he cares about

• Watching you walk around uncomfortable, teetering the edge of all too familiar pain was hard to ignore

• “I know those things can be a real bitch.” He points with the bottle he’s holding

• “Are you trying to be sympathetic or stating a fact?”

• “I’ve been around the block a few times,” Husk shrugs, “And I might be offering my services if you need ‘em. Not just good for listening.”

• He almost regrets it when you immediately accept. He looks at his claws, tainted by alcohol and who knows what else, then your wings

• Washes his hands before. Which strikes you as odd because you’ve seen him use a dirty rag to clean glasses at the bar

• He might be qualified but surely you have someone more deserving willing to help you? Someome nicer, someone cleaner, someone better than him?

• Husk isn’t complaining! It’s just his inner thoughts making his hands tremble

• “I owe you a drink for this,” You say sweetly

• Husk hums out a laugh, “Nah. It’s my pleasure,”

Perry the Platypus Headcanons (with the Flynn-Fletchers)

Heinz gave perry an identical looking teddy bear as the one he has in the first London episode and perry sleeps with that ever since. Phineas and Ferb saw him cuddling with it. "What do you have there, boy? Oh a teddy bear? Well, as long as you didn't steal it..." Then ferb gives perry a thumbs up because he, for one, approves of stealing. Perry brings that even when he sleeps with the boys.

Whenever there's a family celebration, phineas and ferb dresses perry with a black bowtie and a top hat and calls him fancy perry. Whenever they enter the party phineas always says "Ready your jaws and excited hands for Fancy Perry!" or "And here we have the illustrious Fancy Perry gracing us with his presence in this lovely evening..." (yes, this is the black bow tie he frequently uses in the show. yes, the boys influenced most of his love of grandeur)

Post-secret identity reveal, perry shows off his athleticism with the boys whenever he can. God knows how long he wanted to. They never stop being impressed.

As a thank you for keeping his secret, Perry occassionally helps out Stacy with little favors (some she knows, some she doesn't). Oftentimes, perry leaves a "-P" note at the things he does for her so she doesn't think she has a stalker or something. They hang out sometimes and play video games.

After stacy got into politics, perry decided that he'll keep close attention to any assasination and harmful attempts on her under the radar. There were some and perry foils them everytime no matter how far stacy was from danville when they happened. Stacy caught up that perry was behind saving her and sends him gifts as thanks.

Perry has a gold card for auction uses (dont make me explain how that works) that he exclusively use to win ducky momo limited edition merch that he sends to candace under the guise of her winning them on never-been-heard-of raffles. She thinks it's suspicious after the fifth time it happened and decided it was either the boys or lawrence behind it and has been waiting for them to tell her.

Lawrence is a disaster magnet (not as much as the murphys ofc but relevant enough) and perry actually saved him more times he can count.

Linda never forgets to buy perry ultra soft brushes every few months that mostly SHE uses for him.

Post-identity reveal, perry plays 3d chess with phineas and ferb online while the two are away from home. The boys are aware perry can travel the distance in a short while through some weird secret agent logic, but they don't want him to get tired (not to mention they themselves can travel that distance through one of their inventions). They'll save that for something really important.

Those three love playing football, skateboarding, and the rest is extreme sports.

Perry has become the Flynn-Fletcher family's first emergency contact after the identity reveal for things that they don't want the other family members to panic about for the reason of having enough time to explain to them what happened (in times of hospitalization calls the call always gets forwarded to Linda, however). And perry's is doofenshmirtz first and secondly both the boys.
