Dumbells — Up Late with (Mind Meld)

Up Late with Dumbells jangles and chimes, singing out fetching scraps of melody in exuberant harmony. The Sydney, Australia band is scrappy, too, bristling with rackety, guitar-slashing, drum-bashing energies, but there’s a sweetness here. They seem more like a Slumberland band than a Total Punk outfit, though to be fair, they’re on Total Punk’s offshoot label, Mind Meld.

Listen, for instance, to how “Sweetest Reminder” rolls, a thicket of emphatic guitar licks leading into the lingering lyricism of the chorus, serpentine melody ending in brash shouts of “ha! ha! ha! ha!” Or consider the instrumental “Mist” thumping and crashing, sure, but also stretching out towards a surfy horizon, the Thermals gone kraut-rock-y.

“Hammer” is a standout, with its snaking, slurring, slacked out tunefulness, battering drums and Exploding Hearts-style guitar romanticism. But “Bubbles” is just about as good, coming in emphatically on windmill chords and scrambling drum fills, and riding the rollercoaster in a vertiginous coda. A noise of bubbles popping lends a giddy optimism, but there’s wistfulness in the way the vocals stretch out.

These songs are instrumentally taut and disciplined.  You could bounce a quarter off the beat in “Apples.”  But the singing drifts and elongates, extending a woozy, blurry welcome.  The song knocks you silly then kisses it better, wearing a goofy grin the whole time.

Dumbells’ record is such an enjoyable listen that you start to think that the egg-punk/chain-punk wars maybe divided us unnecessarily, that bands can thrive in either mode and even in the places where they intersect. Dumbells are definitely worth staying up late for.

It's hard to tell from the Bandcamp write-up if this is released by Total Punk Records (Portland, Oregon) or if it's just available through their store. Either way, the write-up grabbed my attention when the I read the following paragraph:

"On one hand, a child, or even a Pavement fan could immediately be wooed by the immediacy of the hooks, melodies and charismatic group dynamic expertly, but not too expertly, captured on ‘Up Late With Dumbells’. On the other hand, cold hearted cynics will have their record collector cockles warmed by a feeling akin to discovering Big Star’s Radio City or Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartment’s "Bait and Switch"." They also remind me of the work of Soft On Crime.

Using dumbbells, we felt that we were using a natural and comfortable grip, activating more stabilizer muscles, getting the full range of motion and the proper angle of the exercise, and correcting any muscle imbalances or weaknesses. This reduces the risk of injury and increases the effectiveness of our workouts. 

Overall, we highly recommend dumbbells as must-have equipment for anyone who wants to start their fitness journey at home. They are a great investment, and with a little creativity, you can get a full-body workout that rivals any gym workout. So, don't wait any longer.
