“To bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.” - George Washington For @pinsent_tailoring’s #modernlessmarch challenge I realized I had some relevant things to post! March 3d’s theme is #resistance, and if I’m all about political resistance, my @bostonteapartyships alter ego Mary “Polly” Winegar Young is equally so! Married to freethinking Deist and Son of Liberty Dr. Thomas Young, I portray her as being as passionate about the fight for representation as her husband, and every bit as eager to resist tyranny. My own desire for social justice is certainly present in my interpretation of her. The first image is of me as Mrs. Young and my friend @kissingtheshoreline as Mrs. Abigail May, doing a presentation on Liberty Teas - the herbal teas that many used to replace the imported tea of the United East India Company during the boycott of imported tea. And I must note that while I look down on Washington for being a slaveholder, the above quote from his letter to the Jews of Newport, RI in 1790, has always meant a lot to me as a Jewish person. It’s what this country ought to stand for, even if it has never quite lived up to that promise. #pollywinegaryoung #maryyoung #bostonteapartyshipsandmuseum #boston #bostonhistory #18thcentury #resist #standupfightback #bostonteaparty #dumpthetea #resisttyranny #tobigotrynosanction #topersecutionnoassistance #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturycostume https://www.instagram.com/p/B9SxkneA05P/?igshid=1jwsg2pqudrm7

On this day, April 17, 1734, Mary “Polly” Winegar Young was born in Amenia, NY, to immigrant Palatine German parents. She was in the middle of some twenty siblings, and in 1735 she married Dr. Thomas Young, one of her father’s boarders. He was a freethinking student of philosophy who questioned religious orthodoxy and political systems, and you have to think Polly would have been on board with this if she said yes to a life with this renegade idealist. His altruistic but foolhardy nature led to a difficult life for Polly and their family, and once they moved to Boston he became an instrumental member of the Sons of Liberty. His Deism and his work with the Sons of Liberty made him a target. Polly had to be strong for their five children, but with the stress of Boston falling under martial law in 1774, her mental health suffered to the point Thomas removed the family to Rhode Island - only to flee danger again for Philadelphia. Polly lost Thomas to a sudden fever contracted from his patients at a military hospital, leaving them bankrupt. Polly had to sell off Thomas’ prized library to make ends meet and most of the family moved back to New York. She got to see the Revolutionary War’s end, she got to see her daughter Susanna become a schoolteacher, and lived out her days with her grandsons into a new century, dying in 1808. Happy birthday, Polly. It has been an honor to portray you at the @bostonteapartyships, and I celebrate your incredible strength today and every day I play you. Once this pandemic has passed, I look forward to portraying you with a renewed fire, because you endured so much loss, fear, and uncertainty. Tonight I will drink my last loose-leaf chamomile tea (recommended by Thomas as a more healthful tea than that imported by the United East India Co.) in your honor. #pollywinegaryoung #marywinegaryoung #bostonteapartyshipsandmuseum #bostonteaparty #bostonteapartymuseum #historicalinterpretation #history #livinghistory #boston #bostonhistory #happybirthday #revolutionarywar #americanrevolution #acting #18thcenturyfashion #18thcentury #18thcenturycostume #chamomiletea #dumpthetea #womenshistory https://www.instagram.com/p/B_FiZ5rAYBQ/?igshid=1r50gwug3ctxs

So proud of how wonderfully #BostonTeaPartyReenactment went, and grateful my mom, aunt, uncle, and sweet friend Cleo were able to come out and see us all perform! First two pics courtesy of Cleo, the others are screen caps of the scene I shared with the amazing @ruthfont7, @sylviasword and @afaythe. Check out the @bostonteapartyships’ Facebook page to see all our scenes and a livestream of the dumping of the tea! All my coworkers are absolutely incredible performers and approach their job with great love and attention to detail. #historicalinterpretation #bostonteaparty #sonsofliberty #bostonteaparty2019 #dumpthetea #history #livinghistory #historicalfashion #historicalreenactment #bostonactors #bostonhistory #18thcenturydress #18thcentury #18thcenturyhistory #18thcenturyboston #bostonteapartyshipsandmuseum https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Oh-y1ApjK/?igshid=1gghz1cjvyoep

Another view of this gorgeous gown created by @podgetheteacup. Kerchief by @burnleyandtrowbridge, shoes by @fugawee.corporation.
