“To bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.” - George Washington For @pinsent_tailoring’s #modernlessmarch challenge I realized I had some relevant things to post! March 3d’s theme is #resistance, and if I’m all about political resistance, my @bostonteapartyships alter ego Mary “Polly” Winegar Young is equally so! Married to freethinking Deist and Son of Liberty Dr. Thomas Young, I portray her as being as passionate about the fight for representation as her husband, and every bit as eager to resist tyranny. My own desire for social justice is certainly present in my interpretation of her. The first image is of me as Mrs. Young and my friend @kissingtheshoreline as Mrs. Abigail May, doing a presentation on Liberty Teas - the herbal teas that many used to replace the imported tea of the United East India Company during the boycott of imported tea. And I must note that while I look down on Washington for being a slaveholder, the above quote from his letter to the Jews of Newport, RI in 1790, has always meant a lot to me as a Jewish person. It’s what this country ought to stand for, even if it has never quite lived up to that promise. #pollywinegaryoung #maryyoung #bostonteapartyshipsandmuseum #boston #bostonhistory #18thcentury #resist #standupfightback #bostonteaparty #dumpthetea #resisttyranny #tobigotrynosanction #topersecutionnoassistance #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturycostume https://www.instagram.com/p/B9SxkneA05P/?igshid=1jwsg2pqudrm7

My reaction as a historical interpreter when I see a former coworker storming the Capitol in 18th century kit with a racist, fascist, antisemitic, violent insurrectionist mob. Dressing in costume from a time when not all human beings were treated as such (and let’s be honest, still aren’t) comes with a responsibility to not play into the false, harmful misconceptions about the past. If we are to be a community at all, we should hold accountable those who threaten to repeat the mistakes of the past. Our costume cannot be seen as an endorsement of regressive, racist, misogynistic values. It is not an excuse to regress. I and my friends feel very personally disgusted that someone we shared so much time with would join fascists who clearly do not see the humanity of anyone not absorbed in their conspiracy theories and unbridled entitlement. It showed us that not only did he absorb none of the lessons we try to teach visitors, but he was able to disregard and negate the humanity of the people he worked with daily. For a Jewish pansexual feminist like me, historical interpretation is a call to remember and be honest about this country’s history as we continue to hope that it lives up to its purported ideals in our lifetimes. I need my Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ friends to know that the re-enactment, costuming, and historical interpretation communities appreciate and stand by you, and if those around you don’t there are more of us who will. Sadly this #georgianjanuary this is all I can really think about and contribute. Not exactly a selfie for #selfiesunday, but definitely a capture of me feeling like my best self. About to give a tour at the @bostonteapartyships to my parents, wearing the glorious gown by @podgetheteacup which made me feel as beautiful and powerful as any garment has, playing a fierce idealist who embodies what we all hope this country could be. #bestself #historicalinterpretation #museumguide #museumworker #18thcenturyfashion #revolutionarywar #startarevolution #americanrevolution #americanhistory #historicaldress #robeanglaise #historicboston #bostonteaparty #bostonteapartymuseum #bostonteapartyshipsandmuseum #pollywinegaryoung #tobigotrynosanction #daughtersofliberty #topersecutionnoassistance https://www.instagram.com/p/B3SX4IxgjkE/?igshid=h3uuhfne6n5a
