Hill Recreation Center | 1308 Fayetteville Street | THIS IS A FREE EVENT and MY FIRST PUBLIC MURAL!!!! It would mean a lot for you to be present and participate! The historic Algonquin Tennis Club, which served the African American community in the early and middle 20th Century, was located roughly in the area of the current W.D. Hill Recreation Center on Fayetteville Street. The Durham Committee on Negro Affairs was founded at the Algonquin on August 15, 1935. Exactly 84 years later, on August 15, 2019, a marker will be unveiled in honor of the Algonquin Tennis Club. Following the unveiling, there will be a 7:00 PM historical program that will highlight the athletic, social, and political significance of the Algonquin.
