Giant versions of animals in DF are no joke. This sea lamprey provoked a giant sponge and did not survive.

I love how the lamprey's attack is described as "lightly tapping the target". On the other hand one successful push from the sponge ,and it was over for that silly fish.

Some dwarves like sponges for their squishy texture.

Some dwarves like sea lampreys for their suckers.

Dwarf Fortress Wiki: when picking your first set of recruits, pick dwarves with titles like "fish cleaner" because that titles means they're useless at everything else and society would lose nothing if they died.

Meanwhile my fish cleaner is working 24/7 because he's the bottleneck on feeding my entire fortress and everyone would starve if he died.

If your fort is located on a map where part is evil and part is not, it is best to put your refuse stockpile on the part that is not evil.

everyone loves to laugh at how comically granular/detailed Dwarf Fortress is (and rightfully so!), but i feel like NetHack doesn't get enough attention because it is just as funny. for example, one of your most essential tools for surviving the early floors is to check the readme/wiki and notice that one of your, no joke, literally 134 keybinds is "engrave". pressing that button prompts you to write a word or phrase on a nearby surface, either by etching it with a dagger, blasting it with a wand, or just writing in the dust with your finger. if you write specifically the word "Elbereth" on a tile, you can stand there without most monsters being able to touch you.

the word "Elbereth" is not referenced or explained anywhere in-game. you are expected to know it from having read Lord of the Rings. you can really tell this game originally released in 1987 sometimes

The dwarf fortress wiki is one of the funniest game wikipedia’s I’ve seen. Even outside of the sections “rated D for Dwarf” there are some absolutely hilarious stuff, and it just looks like a regular plain wikipedia article.
