After The War: Foxx Hunting (Prev <-)

"Commander."
On anyone else, the tone would suggest simple statement. But there was a lilt. A slight inflection, I had long learned to spot, at the end of the word. That made it a greeting. A call. Monotone filled with subtle, near untraceable mocking.
"Tired of running yet, Commander? Or do you want to struggle more? You can, if you want. I can let you. We have time. After all, it really won't change much. There's no where you can go."
Head tilted ever so slightly, at an almost an invisible angle. Posture, military perfect, impossibly so. That perfection bought with pain, torture, born out of brutal necessity. His lips quirked, in an amused curl. At just that same, impossibly slight amount. Too small and indistinct for his tormentors to notice. To take from him.
Just enough to stay human, I had thought. Too stay sane, I had hoped.
I was wrong.
My biggest mistake hunted me. Had all the power in the GALAXY now, to hunt me. All the time he could ever dream, in which to do so. And it was all my fault. Me. It had to be. I... I was the only thing that changed. Tried to make things... things BETTER!
How arrogant. Hubristic. Who the fuck was I? To think I had the RIGHT, to shape and change the fate of an entire GALAXY to my whims? I didn't even know the story. Had been GUESSING, based off STAR WARS. So... so fucking confident. A-and what did that get me? Oh god. O-Oh god!
The blaster burns on my arms and legs screamed, as I forced myself up, one more time. Always, please god, always! J-just one more time! Don't give out on me yet. Not.. not until we are safe. Then. Then! We can cry. Howl and weep, break down and scream.
(My fault. My Fault. MY FAUL-)
None of the characters were an exact match. People were and weren't where they should be. Plots happened out of sequence or not at all. So why? WHY? Did I believe so hard in the Clones? IS it because I loved, still LOVE, the Vode? Did that trust transfer? That emotional connection? Was I tricked? Or was I just a fool? Does it MATTER in the end? If the result is the same?
I brought a monster, straight to Power.
Now they're dead. All my brothers, my sisters, my mentors and friends. Dead, dead, DEAD! Glowing weapons on the ground and a temple filled with DEATH. D-Did the nurseries get out? Please, oh god, let the children have survived my mistake.
Blood stains my robes. Only a tiny fraction of it, is mine.
Sticky and slick, oily and so many colors. The blood does not mix. Too many species, too much ash from the air. If I do not clean or remove it soon? I am likely to get chemical burns, from the reactions developing on the cloth. But again and again. My mistake finds me. A pursuit predator. Intent on wearing me down.
"How long will you try, Commander? You know just as well as I do, that I can afford to wait you out. You'll drop eventually." His tone was so mild, even as his words were horrifying. Overhead, a transport kept steady pace, as I desperately ran from commandos on the streets. "How many days has it been without proper rest? Rations? To stop and think? We've survived far worse then this, Commander. For far longer. We can endure, can you?"
I pull my magic around me, through my screaming legs, to fling myself across a jump they shouldn't be able to make.
Despair surges, as behind me... I hear jetpacks. Ah. They've gotten better gear, at long last. E-Everything I've ever wished for them. Gear and food and safety, at long last! A-At long last. I have to laugh, hysterical and afraid. I just... I just never thought my wish? Would be fulfilled for the purpose of hunting me down.
(I'm so tired. Please, god. No more. Let it stop. Let this nightmare END!)
Jumping, I land in a roll on a level several floors down. The impact is ugly. Agony on my burns and bruises. I may have not taken any direct hits? But those glancing strikes? Still leave marks. Trails of seared, blistering, blaster burns. Like tiger strips. As though you hade been struck, by whip made of fire. Not to mention the concussion grenades.
Yeah, half way through the attack, the Clones had stumbled. Either broken free of the Not Sith's control or come to their senses, deciding to switch to non-lethal weapons. Probably trying to go for the capture instead of the kill. But given the sheer variety of the Knights? One Being's sedative was another's lethal toxin. And the gas attacks...
I... I'm still not even sure if... if Master Rim'Llahiy survived long enough, to get to the healers. The seizures were BAD. He... he didn't deserve that. All he'd ever done, was keep the gardens. Live a quite life. T...Try to defend his home.
Around me, as I run, screens light up. Somehow, I'm the focal point. I... I don't know how he's doing this. It has to be Sketch or Gear, one of the Slicers. Who else could hack into so many systems so easily? The... the knowledge that they're helping him? That everyone of the Guard is HELPING him hunt me? I feel sick.
Was any of it real? Was I friends with ANY of them? Or... Or was I just them happy little slave master, patting myself on the back, because I didn't beat them, unlike the others? Aren't I gracious. Don't you just love me? Say thank you for my grace. Let me feel good about my self! My pretty little charity of the day! Before I skip back off to fairy land! Leaving you all in hell.
Do I deserve this? I... I have to deserve this... right?
Even though I tried. Even though I fought and fought and FOUGHT. Even when that Not A Sith BASTARD tried to kill me at every turn, just to shut me the fuck up, and I WOULDN'T. Because they deserved to be free. Because it was WRONG. Because we took VOWS, remember? Days and days, convincing and campaigning.
I have to... to somehow, deserve this. Because? B-because if I DON'T?
Then What Have I DONE?
City levels and blocks blur together. I couldn't tell you where on this god forsaken ecumenopolis I am anymore. But the others! The others have gotten off planet by now. Surely... surely! They have escaped! Right? They HAVE too. I-It HAS to have been worth it. Becoming bait. M-making myself a target. This... this one last time?
It.. it was WORTH it. Right? Right?!
Please! Please god! Let it have been WORTH IT!!
I skid around a corner. Too tight, not judging it right in my panic, my shoulder clipping the wall hard. Scraping flesh through my robes. Just more bruises and hurt to add to the pile. I don't slow. Can't slow. Feel it but push the pain away. The crash later will be ugly, when I release the magics flowing through me. When the adrenaline fades. But... but either I will live to endure it? Or it will not matter at all.
Too late, though, I see the trap.
I have been corralled. Like a a sheep from my first life, harried by dogs into a pen. Tricked into a corner. No where left to go. The platform I thought was a street? Was an alley between two buildings, leading to a third. A perfect little killbox with only one way out. I stumble, horrified, as I register the truth too late. Spin, already knowing it's too late to double back. But hoping... HOPING....!
Jetpacks. The commando squadron of the guards, touching down at the entrance, a solid line of armor and skill. Better weapons, jet packs, upgraded armor. They... they even seem rested. For the first time in years.
A stark reversal. Now it is I, who is barely holding on. Now I am the one, who has been ground to dust, by the exhaustion of fighting without end. Of running and running. No real food and no real rest. No medicine. No help coming. I want to laugh, scream, weep. So it's to be poetic justice, is it?
But I can not give in.
Forgive me. But I can not, WILL NOT give in. Body exhausted, I draw my blade. The plasma humming as the magics charge. The alleyway fills with light. I took Vows. Owe my soul to the Galaxy and it's people. Regardless of Regime, I have service I must complete. And to do that? I have to be alive.
(I don't care, that they took over. Let them have it. But how could you? How COULD YOU?! The Temple was my home. I am a hypocrite. Here, at the end, I must face that. And now I know it to be true.)
The ship over head dips lower, kicking up a hurricane of wind. My robes whip around me, but I do not move from my opening stance. Ready, not ready, but resigned to it none the less. The Commandos are a silent wall as, from above, a rip cord descends. Clipped to it? Marshall Commander... no, Supreme Commander Foxx.
The Clones newly elected Emperor.
A man I THOUGHT was my friend.
He looked nothing like Commander Fox of the Vode. Hair too long and curling. Face deceptively young looking and boyish. Non regulation piercing hidden under the helmet all Guards wore, day in and day out. They hadn't been able to customize their armor like the others. So they customized themselves.
He wasn't in armor, now. It was somehow worse. The dress uniform an affront, a reminder, like a curse of broken glass. I... I hadn't even known he owned such a thing. It made sense, given his old position. Yet, somehow... somehow? I doubted this was the uniform he had been given. It looked... looked Regal.
"Are we done, now? Got it out of your system? Or should one of us put you on the ground first? Grind your face right against the filthy floor?"
His voice was mild as ever, as he calmly unclipped himself, let the cord retract. He tucked his hands behind his back. Strolled forward with measured steps, assessing eyes, like a general examining untested troops. Picking me apart for weakness, looking for openings in my stance. Injuries on my body. I had seen him do this before. Just... just never thought... it'd be used... a-against me. (How arrogant, I had been.)
"This can stop at any time, Commander. All you have to do? Is stop running. You don't have to worry anymore. I'm not going to hurt you. We're not going to hurt you. You've struggled long enough, don't you think? It's time to be done. To come home. Be taken care off. That's all we want to do, Darling. Commander."
"Surely you can see, that it's BETTER this way? No more war. No more Knights on sabotaged missions. Diplomats to war zones. Children where they shouldn't BE. The Order can be SAFE now. YOU can be safe now. Loved and precious as you always should have been. It's okay now, Commander. Come here. It's okay..."
Foxx's eyes blazed with conviction. They had been brown, like his brothers. They... oh god, they SHOULD have been brown. But as I stared into his face, at those unfamiliar eyes on what should be so familiar a form? Red stared back. The red, Red, RED, of the Fallen.
Foxx had been... had been Energy Sensitive. The Cloners had fucking LIED, when they said it wasn't possible. I had always suspected. Didn't dare bring attention to it. Didn't want my friend to be... to be KILLED. Experimented on. I should have trained him. Done more.
Desperate people will reach for anything, to stop themselves from drowning. And the Dark offers such tempting things. Vengeance and Power. Freedom, no matter the cost. It pays sweetly then corrupts slow. There is always a cost.
I can not risk it.
Shifting my weight to my front leg, in preparation to surge forward, I never get the chance. A two fold thwip! And sharp pinch in my upper arm. I got the first. But the second... a? Dart? No. NO! Panicked, I flood my body with the magics meant to purge drugs and... instantly the world spins. I have somehow just made it worse. W-what?
"Confiscated from slavers, 'bout five months back. It's a high end drug." The Commando with the dart gun said, as though commentingon the weather. "Fairly new, too. Made to react specifically to the Cosmic Energies. Our esteemed Chancellor, may he rot as he deserves, had them developed through several shell companies."
"Really wish you hadn't done that, Commander. Cause, see, the side effects? Are pretty nasty." Foxx commented. Various helmets nodded, the guards body language sympathetic but lacking any remorse. What ever it took to bring me in. To make me Safe.
"Now you're going to be sick for a while. But on the other hand? You are a stubborn one. So maybe this'll give you time to think, hmm? Time to enjoy the pampering a bit. You'll get used to it, learn to be good for me. I know you. You're a smart girl."
My legs couldn't hold me anymore. Despite struggling, I couldn't keep my blade at the ready. Helplessly, I watched as he watched forward. Used a single finger, on the hilt, to push my blade to the side. The lightest of tugs, stealing it from me entirely. At long last, the tears came. I... I was scared. Really, really scared. P-please... Foxx, please...
"Hunts over, Commander. It's time to stop running. You've lost."
"But, that? That's okay. You can lose now. Be weak. Wretched and pathetic and flawed. You don't have to be perfect any more, Commander. I've got you. You're Mine. Ours. Perfect, just the way you are. And today?"
"Today is the start of the rest of your new life, Commander."
"Welcome to the Empire."

Hello! I recently saw your reaction to a poll about which ships in MHA you don't like and you had very interesting answers and depth into some in particular... Hawks.
You said, and I won't quote because I frankly can't remember, that Hawks would be a much better character if he actually had more development/nuance to him and I wanted to know how? And why you think his character isn't as nuanced and/or developed as of now?
I'm a large Hawks fan myself, and I was super interested in seeing your opinion, since I've never seen somebody say he needed more development, would you care to share some of your thoughts?
Let's take a look at the bones behind Hawks:
-Child of a villain.
-Was an abused child by his domestic abuser dad.
-A child soldier molded to be the perfect secret agent and hero by the government.
-He's basically in the Japanese CIA.
-He's immensely powerful and also likes Endeavor, who he has a parasocial relationship with because he admired him as a father figure.
-He killed a guy in an incredibly contrived scene (he could have simply drugged Twice before the operation began and spirited him away) but it raised an interesting question: Should heroes kill? And under what circumstances should they do so?
-Dabi bathed him in blue fire after he killed Twice and Tokoyami reacted that his wings were burnt off.
So what's the story do with him?
He just becomes an Endeavor cheerleader.
The HPSC gets killed off by a clone of Redestro, meaning the good guys don't ever have to confront the government at all.
His burnt wings recovered and the worst that happened is he needed some prosthetic blades, which functioned just as good as his original feather swords. Was this man crippled for his future fight against All For One? No.
When he sees Twice again on the battlefield, he yells that they should kill him, showing he's exactly the same as he was the day he killed the guy.
And he doesn't give a single blue fuck about Endeavor being a domestic abuser. He knows the true story, and he simply doesn't care.
This is the same for all of the good guy characters, but Hawks especially experienced an abusive dad.
The guy he idolized turned out to be like his dad, except a hero and not a villain.
And he doesn't care. Have you ever seen the show Law And Order? I want you to imagine how the cops on that show would react if one of the hero cops they've worked with for years was outed as a domestic abuser. There would be an angry confrontation, some hurtful words thrown around, and a fracturing of relationships. Permanent changes to how these people see each other, with different people taking sides. Friction that would spread far beyond just this one event. Instead we get...nothing, I guess, because Endeavor feels sorry for what he did, so it's okay now.
The question of when and if you should kill a villain isn't answered by Hawks or people connected to him. It's answered by Gran Torino. We learn that killing is another way of saving someone if they're too far gone, which Deku apparently takes to heart.
What's worse is that Nagant exists. She took the last bit of intrigue Hawks' character could have had.
I firmly agree with @class1akids that an arc where Hawks fell and joined the villains fits a lot better than inventing a new character out of whole cloth, and then inventing a government conspiracy of the previous regime to go with her, and then this never going anywhere.
Imagine, if you will, a universe where everything is played straight. Tomura decays Endeavor during their battle, so he's dead.
Dabi truly did burn off Hawks' wings entirely, so those are gone.
And in the chaos that follows, the public despairs and wants someone to blame. So, the HPSC uses a scapegoat.
And that person ends up being Hawks. The guy who planned the raid. The guy who spied on the villains. And, according to the government the reason for the heroes' failures.
He's useless to them now because he doesn't have his quirk anymore. And he's reeling from the reveal of who Endeavor actually was.
So at his lowest moment, stripped of his hero license and his legacy tarnished, All For One appears.
It works even better if you merge the elements of Nagant's character into this version of Hawks.
Hawks was a secret agent who assassinated numerous people on the HPSC's orders. Hawks believed in the system and while he had some doubts, this event completely destroyed his faith.
We can also accomplish something else, here. AFO could test a beta version of the rewind drug the Doctor made on Hawks, which restores his wings to the point they were at in canon after Dabi burned them. It 1, gives Hawks his iconic wings back in a plausible way, and 2, foreshadows All For One's endgame desperation move. The audience just isn't told what Hawks was injected with until the final war arc.
And then he gifts the guy with the same quirk Nagant had. And sends him to capture Deku.
Now suddenly this battle against Deku actually means something and it's between two people who know each other and who the audience has a connection to.
How, then, does Deku restore Hawks' faith in heroes when it's been shattered so terribly? A true test of Deku's abilities to understand villains and turn them. He doesn't have the easy win he got against Nagant, but the fact that he knows Hawks means he has more information to work off of.
The reveal that Hawks is no more than a contract killer for the government while having a happy, smiling face in public is a train car to the gut for Deku.
You can still end the fight with a fakeout, as the story loved to do at that time.
After he decides to switch back to team Deku, he has a bad reaction from the drug and collapses and is apparently dead.
We just bring him back later like they did to Nagant. He got saved offscreen. You know, like how Nagant survived exploding.
Heaven forbid we kill off anyone loyal to team hero.

Some more thoughts I've had about Wolf 359 Severance AU:
Renee Minkowski got the job at Goddard Futuristics after her beloved husband died in a car crash two and a half years ago. She was pretty wrecked by it, and first tried to keep pursuing her dream of being an astronaut, partially because she'd always wanted to but hadn't had the courage to pursue it and now she's like fuck it and partially to try and get away from everything for a while. But when she applied with Goddard's deep-space program, she was rejected. Again. It was crushing. But Mr. Cutter, who did the job interview, was so friendly, and made her feel so bad even though he of course didn't mean to, and he said a position was open on the Severed floor of the main Goddard headquarters, and the work is important, and if she's in-house then when there are more astronaut jobs then maybe she'll look better to the hiring committee, and she was feeling like such a mess that she agreed. And she thinks it's helped, sort of. She tries not to stress about what she's doing down there. She still feels like she's failed at the American Dream.
(She still isn't wholly convinced that Dominik's death was an accident. He was an investigative reporter. She wants to believe in Goddard but she also keeps having these doubts creep in that she is trying so so so hard to ignore. Severance was supposed to help, not introduce new doubts.)
innie!Renee is industrious and likes being a leader, feeling like she's leading a team and doing something Important. What is the job? She doesn't know. But it has to be important, and that's why it's so mysterious. Right?
Doug E. thinks they're parsing through SETI signals looking for aliens. Renee keeps saying they're not looking for aliens. Doug says how do you know. She doesn't, but that would be stupid, and the work is important, so it can't be that. Right?
outie!Doug Eiffel is still a felon whose prison sentence was bought by Goddard for labor and experimentation. innie!Eiffel does not know this.
Alex H. is quiet and studious. outie!Hilbert was a scientist working for Goddard until he Fucked Up and was reassigned to the Severed floor in order to keep his job. Hilbert goes along with this because he thinks that if he gets back in Goddard's good graces they'll let him keep doing his research. (They are totally using and abusing his research and his innie doesn't know this.)
Hera...
Hera P. wakes up on a table.
A voice comes through the intercom.
This feels wrong.
This is backwards.
She's clumsy. Her body doesn't feel right.
She meets the Hephaestus team. She does not want to be here. She tries to escape. It does Not work. She has a bad attitude about it. She wants to not do any work - "ohhhh what are they gonna do, fire me?" - but parsing data feels... good, actually. She doesn't know how to interpret the pain in her abdomen (sometimes it's hunger. sometimes it's needing to pee. She isn't actually positive how to, like... deal with either of those things? Renee and Doug are kind of worried about her and develop a protective attitude towards her - clearly something went wrong during severance, they fucked something up in her brain somehow.) But refining data is something she's good at.
Mysteries and tensions rise until 1) Doug finds something in the data he was not supposed to know and Alex H. freaks out and they learn that Alex has never actually been severed (they all end up lying about this to Administration), 2) they encounter Lovelace who has been living in the walls and talking about how Administration killed her previous team, and 3) they climactically discover that Hera P. is a clone of Dr. Miranda Pryce, the scientist who invented the severance procedure. She's an experiment. She was always an experiment. Hera was an AI that Pryce developed, and Hera P. is a clone of Pryce that she wanted to test not only severance but personality implantation in. Personality uploads haven't been perfected yet, but purely original digital AIs are something that Goddard does have now, and Hera was a particularly unruly one. Miranda's clone, probably just Miranda Jr., is obedient and probably traumatized, so testing the post-severance implantation of a known personality into a body whose biology, neurology, and genetics Pryce knows intimately is something Cutter and Pryce are both very interested in. Sever a person, then instead of allowing an innie personality to develop naturally, implant a new consciousness and see if it takes.
Hera is not, natively, human. She was not born in a human body and doesn't have human instincts. This body is not hers, she was just put in it. She is NOT happy about this.
(Though... my first idea was "clone," but Miranda Pryce just straight up experimenting on herself this way is ALSO a very compelling idea and more thematically resonant here. I'm just not sure if she would subject herself to it.)

Elijah is a really kind and caring guy, he is very polite and respectful, very warm, tries to be as good of a listener as possible, and tries to help in any way he can. He's very selfless, sometimes to his detriment. He may seem quiet and serious at first but once you get to know him you see more of his true lighthearted personality. However he’s an absolute coward. When he’s in a situation where he feels powerless, helpless or where he has no control he panics really easily. He is a huge overthinker and worries a lot but manages it pretty well with meditation. He talks with his hands a lot, he's also very animated and dramatic. He generally trusts people but can be skeptical at times.

Before Daisy House - June 1996 - November 2016
Daisy House Era - November 2016 - Present:
[Massive WIP]
-First appearance at the house, no memory of anything beforehand, except the alias “Jumper” and being a martial artist.
-Saw all the memories, including the games made by Cultivator, anything pertaining to Daisy’s childhood on roblox and her friends didn’t trigger any memories for him. But there was this familiarity to them.
-First met Daisy again during a November Holy Day, with a small feeling of familiarity.
-Saw the old friends, each time he saw them they felt more and more familiar
-Has gotten closer to Daisy overtime
-Only recently has he started to “Wake up”, keeps getting the feeling he knew Daisy and the old friends at some point. Every time he meditated he saw his old self but he had no idea who he was. (Well now he knows!)
-Became more desperate to find out who he is.
-Was learning magic from various mentors(Still is)
-Will get his memories back from a trigger, most likely from a conversation with Daisy. (He got em back!)
-Went to visit Zailyn, ended up with her guiding Jumper towards the idea of him being Elijah
-Spoke to Daisy, told her that she felt familiar to him. Daisy used her powers to resurface Jumper’s memories, and they had a heart to heart and reunited. He now remembers he’s Elijah. Now… Only time will tell what happens. (PRESENT)

Book recs: post- and transhumanism
AKA: cyborgs, uploaded minds, and humans otherwise altered by technology.
I have previously written a rec list for books featuring robots and artificial intelligences, but ended up excluding various titles for not quite fitting the theme. Hence, this list, which focuses more on the step from human into something else, commonly with themes of what it means to be human.

Previous book rec posts:
Really cool fantasy worldbuilding, really cool sci-fi worldbuilding, dark sapphic romances, mermaid books, vampire books, portal fantasies, robots and artificial intelligences
For more details on the books, continue under the readmore. Titles marked with an * are my personal favorites. And as always, feel free to share your own recs in the notes!

The Quantum Thief by Hannu Rajaniemi*
Place this one in the category of ‘accept that you’re gonna be confused as hell and just let the world wash over you’. The singularity has come and gone and humans can now easily upload, download and copy themselves into new bodies, not all of them human and not always willingly. Consciousnesses and time has become something close to currency. Follows a murder mystery on Mars.
The Scorpion Rules (Prisoners of Peace duology) by Erin Bow*
Young Adult. Featuring a dystopian future in which an AI forcibly keeps world peace by holding the children of world leaders hostage. If anyone attempts to start a war, their child will be executed. Greta is one of these children, kept in a school with others like her. But things start to change one day when a new, less obedient hostage arrives. A unique, slowburn take on the YA dystopian craze, also featuring a bisexual love triangle.
The Adoration of Jenna Fox (Jenna Fox Chronicles) by Mary E. Pearson
Young Adult set in a near future. Jenna wakes from a year long coma after an accident, and something is wrong. Is this really her life? Are her memories her own? Exactly what happened a year ago, and what did her parents do to get her back?

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky*
Millenia and generation spanning scifi. After the collapse of an empire, a planet once part of a project to uplift other species to sentience is left to develop on its own, resulting not in the intelligent monkeys once intended but in sentient giant spiders. Every 200 000 years they all meet to compare memories and experiences. But this time Purslane and Campion arrive late - and discover that a secret millions of years in the making has lead to an extinction level attack against their kind. Now they must find out the truth before their line is completely wiped out. Absolutely wild world-building, featuring various kinds of posthumans (among which the clones are, shockingly, the most similar to people of our time).
Nexus (Nexus trilogy) by Ramez Naam
In a near future, a nano-drug is developed that can link human minds together, having the potential to change humanity forever. As different factions fight over it - some wanting to control it, other to eradicate it, and many to exploit it - a scientist who's caught improving the drug is thrust into a world of danger and international espionage.

Skinned (Cold Awakening trilogy) by Robin Wasserman
Young Adult. Rich girl Lia Kahn had the perfect life - until she died and was brought back by having her memories downloaded into a mechanical body. Despite having her life back, Lia also finds her life changed, as people fear her and treat her differently. Worse; she herself isn't sure if she's still really Lia, or whether she's even a person at all anymore.
Blindsight (Firefall duology)by Peter Watts*
Vampires and aliens and questions of the nature of consciousnesses, oh my. A ship is sent to investigate the sudden appearance of an alien vessel at the edge of the solar system, but the crew, a group of various level of transhumanism, isn't prepared for the horrors awaiting them. No, seriously, this book will fuck you up, highly recommend if you’re okay with a lot of techno babble and existential horror.
Mortal Enginges (Mortal Engines quartet) by Philip Reeve*
Young Adult. On a barely survivable Earth humanity has taken to living on great wandering cities, hunting each other across the plains for resources. Tom lives in London, but when he intervenes to stop a murder, he falls off the city alongside a strange and hostile girl on the hunt for revenge. Together they set out to catch up to the city, but are chased by a murderous machine like being set on stopping them. Trans/posthumanism isn't the main theme of the book, but it continues to grow in importance throughout the series.
Bonus AKA I haven't read these yet but they seem really cool

P/E!Wis's story - the long version 🩵
🌵 The Lonely Sands
Wis's mother Clara died while she was very young, from a brutal infection stemming from an injury she sustained when she and Wis's father Maurice were out on a wildlife expedition. It shook Wis and her father, and eventually he would leave entirely, to live out the adventures that Clara always wanted, and because he was lost and terrified of having to raise Wis on his own.
Wis was left in the care of her Aunt Kendra, and neither was particularly pleased with Maurice's actions. His endless thirst for adventure and thrill came at the expense of his own damn daughter. He didn't even pass on the story of Wis's origins on as he was instructed to by V5!Wis and the researcher that found the clones.
At the very least, Kendra was a kind and understanding guardian for Wis. She was also the one that told Wis about her origin story, from what she heard from Wis's pa. Wis often thinks that without Kendra's guidance and gentle but firm sense of discipline, she would've been much worse off.
Throughout her teenage years, she drifted along without much of a direction. Her only true motivation was to not turn out like her father was. But anything more specific than that, she had no idea. Kendra suggested that Wis try out building, and without much else to do, she agreed and started receiving some basic training from the sole builder in her village, who was delighted to take an apprentice.
However, mere months into her training, there came sudden news. Maurice had written to her after nearly a decade, with barely an apology, and news that he had bequeathed an old workshop in Portia to her. Wis was hesitant to take it at first, but both her mentor and Kendra encouraged her to do it. She could learn on the job, and there were other builders in Portia. Sure, her pa might've been the one to give it to her, but she could make it truly her own.
🌳 Greener Pastures
That was what ultimately had Wis on a boat to Portia, uncertain but thrumming with anticipation for a place other than Barnarock. She initially isolated herself when she first came to Portia, putting 110% into learning building pretty much all by herself and not knowing who to trust.
Perhaps to everyone's surprise, including her own, the person who got Wis to open up a little bit in those first few weeks...was Higgins. Wis thought that he could potentially teach her to help fill in the gaps in her training, but he immediately called her a twerp and thought that she was only sitting pretty on inheritance...despite her house clearly being a worn-out shack. But instead of being completely offended, Wis found it...a little funny, if she was being honest. If Higgins thought she was a twerp, then she'd be a twerp, alright. They'd constantly jabber with each other when they saw each other on the street. They'd always run into the Commerce Guild first thing in the morning, pushing and shoving to get the best commissions. They'd spar all the time, and sometimes it'd go a bit too far.
Gradually though, as they come to learn about each other's poor lots in life, they become less and less vitriolic, and by the end, their friendship is nigh-inseparable.
Through her efforts to help develop the little town of Portia, and the encouragement and kindness of the locals, Wis gradually opens herself up a lot more to trusting and bonding with people. She'd hardly had anyone quite like the Portian community at all in her life, but it was welcome after years of drifting in self-imposed isolation.
🪻 On the Other Side
When Mint first arrived in town, he couldn't stop looking at Wis suspiciously. He already seemed to know who she was before she even introduced herself too. He'd just come from Sandrock...and wasn't she just over there??
As it turned out, there was another clone in Sandrock, Wisteria Cyprens! A builder, just like her, albeit far more experienced. Mint sent a letter to his Sandrocker friend Qi about the mysterious second Wis, and both clones were delighted at their absolute bewilderment. They quickly got in touch, and P!Wis took a break for a week or two to visit Sandrock.
She and S!Wis hit it off fairly quickly, with S!Wis jumping at the opportunity to teach P!Wis some tips and tricks of the trade. While she had a lot of fun, P!Wis couldn't help but feel a sense of jealousy as she talked more with her clone sister. S!Wis seemed to have everything she didn't. Both parents still alive and present in her life, an extended family back in Highwind, a determined direction for her life in building, a proper education, and plenty of prior experience. She did her best to sympathize with P!Wis, but from the very start, P!Wis sensed that there would always be a gap between them, even if it was incredibly small.
Regardless, she remained in regular contact with S!Wis, even after she went home. It was nice, having a penpal and arguably a whole new sister.
The Rogue Knight's attack on Portia took place only a week or so after Duvos's Invasion of Sandrock. She was one of the first to reach out to S!Wis and ask if she was truly okay. She eventually paid Sandrock another visit for them to talk over their experiences, joined by D!Wis and later interrupted by T!Wis. Once again, it seemed like P!Wis and S!Wis deviated. While S!Wis's experiences solidified her resolve to stick to her original objective of settling down in Sandrock without much fuss, P!Wis's experiences stirred her in a strange way.
Somehow...she found herself craving something with the magnitude of the Rogue Knight and the subsequent aftermath again. Rising up to the challenge. Proving her name. Out of respect for S!Wis though, she said none of this out loud. Once again, she felt that gap between them. Would it ever truly close?
🩺 The Doctor is In
While Higgins might have been the first to bring Wis out of her shell, the mild-mannered Dr. Xu ended up being the one who do so the most. Being as inexperienced a builder as she was, Wis found herself getting injured a fair amount from machines and fatigue and combat. Mostly minor, but still enough to warrant a doctor's look.
She was generally very aloof during the first several meetings with Xu and Phyllis. Just there to do her business. In and out. Xu wasn't a very nosy man. Patient confidentiality and all. But when he met P!Wis, and heard the rumblings of her stoic, solitary nature from others around town, he couldn't help but be curious. And when he learned about what happened with her pa and why she was in Portia to begin with, he saw someone in need of healing. Unfortunately, maybe not the kind of healing he could do. He was only a physician, not a psychologist.
Even so, he made efforts to make her feel safe and welcome whenever she had to come into the clinic, and gradually, she responded positively, much to his delight. Slowly, Wis developed light-hearted, bantering friendships with Xu and Phyllis, and soon she found herself visiting them just because.
Xu eventually started catching feelings...though he probably at least had a hint of a crush on Wis from the very beginning. It never really hit him until one day, Phyllis came to him with a cheeky look and what would've been a simple piece of news: Wis switched her primary doctor to Phyllis. She said that she'd be more comfortable with Phyllis...partly because she was growing closer with Xu. She didn't want the doctor-patient relationship to interfere with their personal one.
With such a large restriction suddenly removed...everything kind of slid into place all at once. In an ideal world, he'd be able to heal her completely, but even if he can't, he'll still bandage all her physical wounds with care...and help her be happy. Comfortable. To see her smile and laugh and truly be at ease from whatever was eating at her from the inside.
Wis had never felt as safe as she did around Xu. He was grounded, just the right amount of silly, and he truly cared for people even outside his profession. She felt comfortable telling him just about anything. Soon enough, she didn't just see him as a friend anymore. One afternoon, they hung out on Amber Island the whole afternoon, walking and talking, staying far longer than either of them had intended. As the sun set over the horizon and the stars peeked out, they fell silent.
Until Xu took the first step, nervously confessing how he felt for her. Wis suddenly felt her mind freeze up. She felt strongly for him too...but a part of her instinctively wanted to push that away. Self-defense. If he got too close, it'd only be worse if he left her. She was honest; telling him about that conflict. He assured her that they could take things as slowly as they needed to, and that he had no plans on leaving anytime soon, not her, not Portia. And so began their relationship, shy and tenuous, but filled with understanding and warmth.
The true test of their bond would come when Xu expressed a desire for going to Seesai for a while to further his medical studies. How long? Neither of them knew. Wis was immediately nervous. This was it, wasn't it?! This was the part where he'd leave her and never come back. He very adamantly assured her that a) he wasn't leaving right away, b) he would NOT be away forever (he'd miss her and Portia too much for that), and c) they could always write to each other in the meantime!
Over the next several months before Xu planned to take his trip, the couple did the best they could to prepare themselves emotionally to be away from each other for an indefinite amount of time. They still had their dates, of course. But they also started making and doing more things for each other. Wis built Xu some equipment that he might need, and gave him diagrams for bigger things that he couldn't carry. Xu prepared more herbs and medicines for Wis and taught her some recipes so she could treat her own injuries more. They practiced being alone in smaller doses, with one of them heading out to another city for a while to work with colleagues or to sightsee. And finally, Xu planted a small garden for Wis, filled with beautiful herbal flowers that blossomed under the light of the full moon: moonlight primrose. Even while they were apart, they could always go out at night and look at the same moon, its soft light uniting them indirectly. With their thorough preparation and their constant, unwavering care for one another...they made it through the entire time just fine.
🌵 "Dear" Old Dad
One day, a while after the Rogue Knight's attack and Wis and Xu's marriage, Xu rose early for work, kissing his still sleeping wife on the cheek as he left. He opened the door...and was greeted by a man asking for his daughter. With a jolt, Xu realized right away that this was Wis's estranged father. He did his best to be civil with him, but Wis was definitely not feeling the same. As soon as she got up and went outside, she was just shy of throwing hands, had it not been for Xu standing right next to her, and the scrap of restraint that she had.
Maurice was on a break from his adventures in the Peripheries, and he wanted to check in on his daughter, pleased to find both her and her old workshop flourishing. Wis was only able to bite out an obligatory thank you for giving the property to her, though she made it incredibly clear that it was barely a gift at all by itself. When she got it, it was overgrown, dilapidated, and she had to fix everything herself.
Their subsequent build-off was no less strained. Wis only agreed to get Maurice out of her hair. With how he never contacted her more than one in over a decade, this competition was nowhere near friendly. The gift of the pig automation that Maurice created was hardly a decent prize, either. It seemed like the only thing that Maurice could offer his own daughter in recompense was a few material goods. Soon after, he departed Portia without a word, seeing as he was no longer welcome, nor was Wis ever willing to forgive him. But not before catching Wis's stony expression from the fields one final time as he boarded his ship.
Wis never ended up using the robopig for its intended purpose. It could never really fly that far anyways. It gathered dust for a while behind her house, before she and S!Wis would team up to repurpose it into a gardening bot to help her out with her new postgame hobby. Once again, carving out her own mark, in spite of it originally being handed to her by her father.
🌅 What's next?
Wis's call to adventure will lead her to becoming the governor of Evershine! Despite the doubts of a bunch of her clone sisters, who could all see the Alliance's ulterior motives of creating a new city state near the hostile border, she decided that this was truly what she wanted. Just like her workshop in Portia, just like her robopig, she'd make her new office as governor and her new home her own.
It took some persuasion to get Xu to come along. He was planning on spending the rest of his life in Portia, and thought that Wis would do the same. By this time, I think that Portia would have grown a bit population wise, and Phyllis becomes a fully realized doctor and takes students of her own. So Portia's in good hands, while this new settlement could use another skilled doctor to help people out. That's what convinces him eventually.
What will Wis get up to in MTAE? We'll have to see. Since she's going to be the player character, she has the least amount of things set in stone right now for what her future story is going to be. I want to see how things play out in the game and craft a narrative around that as best I can.
Although...one thing that I can say is that Wis will definitely have to contend with the fact that she left Portia behind, possibly for good. Even if she's staying in contact with everyone there, doesn't that make her just like her father? Always seeking out thrills, at the expense of her loved ones.
But she's better than that...right?

OpenAI launches Sora: AI video generator now public

OpenAI has made its artificial intelligence video generator, Sora, available to the general public in the US, following an initial limited release to certain artists, filmmakers, and safety testers.
Introduced in February, the tool faced overwhelming demand on its launch day, temporarily halting new sign-ups due to high website traffic.
youtube
Changing video creation with text-to-video creation
The text-to-video generator enables the creation of video clips from written prompts. OpenAI’s website showcases an example: a serene depiction of woolly mammoths traversing a desert landscape.
In a recent blog post, OpenAI expressed its aspiration for Sora to foster innovative creativity and narrative expansion through advanced video storytelling.
The company, also behind the widely used ChatGPT, continues to expand its repertoire in generative AI, including voice cloning and integrating its image generator, Dall-E, with ChatGPT.
Supported by Microsoft, OpenAI is now a leading force in the AI sector, with a valuation nearing $160 billion.
Before public access, technology reviewer Marques Brownlee previewed Sora, finding it simultaneously unsettling and impressive. He noted particular prowess in rendering landscapes despite some inaccuracies in physical representation. Early access filmmakers reported occasional odd visual errors.
What you can expect with Sora
Output options. Generate videos up to 20 seconds long in various aspect ratios. The new ‘Turbo’ model speeds up generation times significantly.
Web platform. Organize and view your creations, explore prompts from other users, and discover featured content for inspiration.
Creative tools. Leverage advanced tools like Remix for scene editing, Storyboard for stitching multiple outputs, Blend, Loop, and Style presets to enhance your creations.
Availability. Sora is now accessible to ChatGPT subscribers. For $200/month, the Pro plan unlocks unlimited generations, higher resolution outputs, and watermark removal.
Content restrictions. OpenAI is limiting uploads involving real people, minors, or copyrighted materials. Initially, only a select group of users will have permission to upload real people as input.
Territorial rollout. Due to regulatory concerns, the rollout will exclude the EU, UK, and other specific regions.
Navigating regulations and controversies
It maintains restricted access in those regions as OpenAI navigates regulatory landscapes, including the UK’s Online Safety Act, the EU’s Digital Services Act, and GDPR.
Controversies have also surfaced, such as a temporary shutdown caused by artists exploiting a loophole to protest against potential negative impacts on their professions. These artists accused OpenAI of glossing over these concerns by leveraging their creativity to enhance the product’s image.
Despite advancements, generative AI technologies like Sora are susceptible to generating erroneous or plagiarized content. This has raised alarms about potential misuse for creating deceptive media, including deepfakes.
OpenAI has committed to taking precautions with Sora, including restrictions on depicting specific individuals and explicit content. These measures aim to mitigate misuse while providing access to subscribers in the US and several other countries, excluding the UK and Europe.

How Much Does It Really Cost to Build a Wix-Like Website Builder in 2025?
Ever tried building a website from scratch? It's like trying to assemble IKEA furniture without the manual—frustrating, time-consuming, and more complicated than it should be. That’s exactly why platforms like Wix exploded in popularity—drag, drop, done. In 2025, the appetite for website builder platforms is stronger than ever, with creators, solopreneurs, and small businesses all wanting a slice of the digital pie.
But here’s the kicker: building your own Wix-like website builder isn’t exactly a shoestring budget project. If you’re a startup founder or digital creator eyeing the website builder space, you’re probably wondering—how much does it really cost to build something like Wix? Well, let’s roll up our sleeves and dive into the nitty-gritty.
The Allure of the Website Builder Market
Before we talk numbers, let’s talk opportunity. The global website builder market is on a tear, expected to surpass $15 billion by 2027 (Statista). From bloggers to yoga instructors, everyone wants a quick and easy way to get online—and they’re willing to pay for it.
Here’s where it gets spicy: While Wix and Squarespace dominate the scene, there’s a growing demand for niche-focused website builders. Think platforms tailored for restaurants, photographers, e-commerce, or even personal portfolios. And that’s your chance to carve out a slice of the market.
Breaking Down the Costs: What Goes Into a Wix-Like Clone?
1. Core Platform Features (Your Non-Negotiables)
At the heart of a website builder clone are features like:
Drag-and-drop editor
Pre-built templates
Mobile responsiveness
Hosting & domain management
User dashboard and analytics
Building this foundation isn’t a weekend project. For a solid MVP, you’re looking at $80,000–$150,000, depending on the complexity and your team’s location.
📊 Tip: Want to stand out? Consider features like AI-powered design assistants, SEO wizards, and one-click e-commerce integrations.
2. Hidden Costs That Creep Up
Infrastructure: Cloud hosting (think AWS, Azure) and CDN services add up fast.
Third-party integrations: Payment gateways, CRM tools, marketing plugins—they’re essential, but they’re not free.
Compliance & Data Privacy: GDPR, CCPA—these aren’t just buzzwords; they’re legal mandates.
On average, these hidden costs can inflate your budget by 15–30%, so always build in some buffer.
📈 Media Suggestion: Bar chart comparing core dev costs vs. hidden costs in a website builder project.
3. Team & Tech Stack: Your Secret Weapon
Let’s talk team. If you go the traditional agency route in the US or Europe, expect hourly rates of $100–$250. But if you work with a global partner like Miracuves, you can tap into hybrid talent pools—skilled developers, UI/UX pros, and project managers—without burning through your runway.

Scaling a Netflix Clone: Business Model Strategies for Growth
In the rapidly evolving landscape of digital entertainment, the Netflix Clone model has emerged as a popular framework for launching video-on-demand platforms. With the proliferation of smartphones, faster internet, and changing viewer preferences, audiences around the world are increasingly turning to Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms for on-demand content consumption.

However, launching a Netflix Clone is only the beginning. The real challenge—and opportunity—lies in scaling the platform to achieve sustainable growth and profitability. This essay explores the business model strategies that can effectively scale a Netflix Clone, driving user acquisition, engagement, and long-term retention.
Understanding the Netflix Clone Ecosystem
A Netflix Clone app is a white-labeled or custom-built OTT platform that mimics the features and user experience of Netflix. These include:
Multi-device video streaming
Subscription-based access
Personalized content recommendations
Smart UI/UX for navigation and playback
Cloud-based content delivery
These clones can be tailored to niche markets—regional cinema, documentaries, religious content, e-learning, and more—making them versatile for different business objectives.
The Need for Scaling
Why is scaling important? Without growth, an OTT platform risks stagnation, low revenue, and high customer churn. Scaling involves:
Expanding content offerings
Broadening user base (locally and globally)
Increasing platform stickiness and retention
Optimizing infrastructure for performance
Enhancing revenue streams
Let’s break down the essential business model strategies to achieve these goals.
1. Niche Targeting for Market Penetration
One of the most effective strategies to scale a Netflix Clone is market segmentation. Rather than competing directly with global giants, focus on niche markets that are underserved or culturally specific.
Examples:
Regional content platforms for South Indian, Middle Eastern, or African audiences
Genre-focused platforms (e.g., horror, animation, sci-fi)
Faith-based OTT apps delivering sermons, devotionals, and live services
Educational video platforms for online courses and tutorials
Why it works: These niches have loyal audiences, lower competition, and higher engagement, making user acquisition more cost-effective.
2. Content Strategy: More Is Not Always Better
A Netflix Clone’s content library is its most valuable asset. However, the key to growth is not just quantity, but quality, relevance, and exclusivity.
Scaling Tips:
Focus on originals: Develop in-house shows or partner with indie creators for exclusive content.
License smartly: Prioritize content with proven demand analytics (Google Trends, YouTube views, etc.).
Localize content: Use subtitles, dubbing, and culturally adapted marketing to appeal to different regions.
User-generated content (UGC): For community-led platforms, allow verified users to contribute quality content.
A dynamic content pipeline ensures users stay engaged and subscribed.
3. Diversified Monetization Models
Relying solely on subscriptions (SVOD) can limit revenue growth. Scaling requires multiple revenue streams, tailored to the platform’s user behavior and demographics.
Monetization Options:
SVOD: Tiered subscription plans (e.g., Basic, Premium, Family)
AVOD: Free content with targeted ads (ideal for emerging markets)
TVOD: Pay-per-view for exclusive or early-access content
Hybrid: Freemium model offering basic access + premium upgrades
Merchandising & Affiliate Links: Sell themed products or offer affiliate referrals tied to content
SaaS Licensing: Offer the platform as a white-label OTT solution to other brands
Dynamic pricing models based on user demographics and watch history can further boost ARPU (Average Revenue Per User).
4. Technology Scaling & Infrastructure Optimization
Behind every successful OTT platform is a robust technical stack that can scale on demand.
Essentials for Scaling:
Cloud hosting: Use services like AWS, Azure, or GCP for flexible storage and compute power.
CDNs: Deploy global Content Delivery Networks to reduce latency and buffer times.
Adaptive bitrate streaming: Optimize user experience across varied internet speeds.
Load balancing & microservices: Ensure platform reliability during traffic spikes.
Scalable backend CMS: Efficiently manage thousands of video files, metadata, and user permissions.
As user numbers grow, your tech infrastructure must evolve to ensure seamless performance.
5. Personalization Through Data-Driven Insights
User engagement is crucial for scaling. Netflix’s secret weapon is hyper-personalization, and your clone should follow suit.
Key Features:
AI-powered recommendations: Suggest content based on watch history and preferences.
Smart search filters: Enable genre, language, mood, and actor-based browsing.
User profiles & watchlists: Allow personalized experiences for families or individuals.
Behavioral analytics: Track user interaction to identify drop-off points and optimize content placement.
The more personalized the experience, the higher the retention and satisfaction rates.
6. Global Expansion with Local Strategies
Scaling a Netflix Clone globally requires thoughtful geo-targeting and localization.
Global Strategies:
Multi-language support: Interface, subtitles, dubbing
Geo-fencing: Show content based on licensing agreements per region
Local pricing: Adjust subscription costs based on local purchasing power
Regional partnerships: Collaborate with local telecoms, influencers, or content creators
This localized globalization ensures global reach without alienating cultural contexts.
7. Marketing & Growth Hacking Techniques
No scaling strategy is complete without aggressive and smart marketing.
Top Growth Tactics:
Referral Programs: Incentivize users to invite friends
Social media content snippets: Tease content on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts
Influencer Marketing: Partner with creators in your content genre
Email Campaigns: Use behavioral triggers for retention (e.g., “Continue watching” or “New releases you’ll love”)
Push Notifications: Timely alerts for new episodes, trailers, and personalized recommendations
Leverage A/B testing to experiment with CTAs, onboarding flows, and pricing packages.
8. Strategic Partnerships for Scaling
Collaborations can fuel growth at every stage.
Partner Types:
Telecom providers: Bundle OTT subscriptions with mobile data packs.
Device manufacturers: Pre-install your app on Smart TVs, Firesticks, and mobile devices.
Content producers: Co-create exclusive content or acquire affordable licensing deals.
E-learning or fitness brands: Expand into new verticals with shared audiences.
Strategic partnerships help reduce customer acquisition costs (CAC) and boost visibility.
9. Monitoring KPIs & Iterating Constantly
Scaling without metrics is like sailing without a compass. Track these Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
Monthly Active Users (MAUs)
Churn Rate
Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV)
Acquisition Cost (CAC)
Average Watch Time
Completion Rate Per Content Type
Use insights from these metrics to pivot, iterate, and refine growth strategies.
Conclusion
Scaling a Netflix Clone is not just about increasing server capacity or uploading more content. It’s about building a resilient and dynamic Netflix business model that can adapt to user needs, market changes, and technological advances. By combining smart content strategies, scalable technology, diverse revenue streams, and data-driven personalization, you can turn your OTT platform into a thriving, global brand.
Success in the Netflix Clone space isn’t reserved for tech giants. With a solid strategy, even small startups and niche-focused platforms can scale profitably—and capture their share of the ever-expanding OTT universe.

Bit Crash Postmortem
{Week 7}
Now that the core gameplay loop for Bit Crash is functional, I wanted to reflect on the development process so far. Building this game has been a great way to push beyond a simple Asteroids clone into something more experimental and reactive.
What Worked Well The biggest success this week was getting all the core systems to talk to each other. Player movement, shooting, enemy behavior, and scoring now form a satisfying loop that feeds into itself.
Adding enemy respawn behavior after they leave the screen gave the game a much more dynamic feel; fragments that drift out of sight come back for revenge. Combined with knockback when shooting, the player’s own actions constantly shift their position, which adds an element of chaos I really enjoy.
The scoring system is simple but satisfying, and I’ve already seen opportunities to expand it into something more replayable, like Endless Mode or unlockable content.
Playtesting Feedback I had two peers playtest the current build during a workshop session. Neither had seen Bit Crash before, which gave me a chance to observe how a new player reacts without any prior knowledge.
Player 1:
Noted that the movement felt responsive and fluid
Liked the recoil from the blaster, said it added “flavour” to the shooting mechanic
Took several hits before realizing that DataFragments were invincible
Suggested a small red outline or glow around threats to better distinguish them
Player 2:
Said the glitch aesthetic looked cool, but asked whether the visual noise would ramp up too fast over time
Said the respawning enemies were “spooky in a fun way”
Recommended adding a small warning indicator when an enemy re-enters the screen
Enjoyed the asteroid destruction loop, but asked if larger asteroids could break into smaller ones (might explore that later)
From this, I learned that the visual clarity of the game needs tuning - especially as effects stack over time. I also noticed how both players appreciated any mechanic that gave them more feedback or control in a chaotic environment.
What Didn’t Work (Yet) Enemy behavior is still too simple. While DataFragments feel threatening, they don’t provide much interaction beyond being something to avoid. Since they’re indestructible, the player’s only option is to dodge. Over time, this can become repetitive.
Right now, only one object type (the asteroids) contributes to score. This limits the player’s ability to make meaningful choices. Adding more enemy types or making enemies destructible would open up more strategic variety.
Another challenge was making sure everything stayed readable. The glitch aesthetic can very easily become overwhelming. I’ve had to start pulling back some of the visual effects to keep things playable.
One Thing I’d Change About My Process Early on, I jumped into building systems without prototyping them in isolation. If I had sketched out or paper-tested the respawn logic before coding it, I probably would’ve avoided some frustrating bugs and timer issues. Fullerton emphasizes iterative prototyping as a core principle of play-centric design, and this experience really hammered that home.
“It is tempting to keep building features, but without testing, you're not designing — you're guessing.” – Fullerton, Game Design Workshop (2018)
One Thing I’d Change in the Design I’d like to give the player more agency when interacting with enemies. Right now, there’s no way to fight back against DataFragments. I think adding a charge shot or timed “debug pulse” mechanic could allow the player to clear space or protect themselves in a tight moment, adding some needed variety to the loop.
I'm pitching a racing game next, email me if you have any ideas! E: [email protected]
