a couple of Disney Princesses that never were. Alexandria from the book “Goose Chase”, by Patrice Kindl, which was optioned as a film and had some storyboards done, and very likely inspired parts of Tangled. And witch Princess Emeralda “Emma” from The Frog Princess series by E.D. Baker, which was the very loose inspiration for The Princess and the Frog (for that I based her dress design off the picture in Charlotte’s storybook).

An important thing too many people are unaware of.
Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" is NOT based on the brothers Grimm's The Frog King, more commonly known in the English world as "The Frog Prince".
Or rather it is inspired by it, but in a secondary and distant way.
The ACTUAL source material and main inspiration behind the movie is a fairytale novel published in 2002, named "The Frog Princess" by E.D. Baker.
So if you see someone claim for example that "Disney invented the idea of the girl kissing the frog becoming a frog herself" you will know these people have NOT done their research - because it was present in Baker's novel, and formed the entire plot of it.

I made a playlist that I feel captures Annie pretty well. It's always in-progress, but here's what I have so far:
"Wide Awake" by Katie Perry (duh)
"Jealousy, Jealousy" by Olivia Rodrigo (while Annie may not be jealous of anyone, she certainly does like to compare herself at times)
"Song for the Underdog" by Annette Lee (this captures Annie even better than "Jealousy, Jealousy," since Annie is often seen as the underdog when compared to other royalty)
"Mean!" by Madeline the Person [Even if she never says it, Annie would definitely feel the "One thing I like about me's/That I'm nothing like you/And I never will be." line. This would definitely be in relation to Gwennie and the rest of her family (but mostly Gwennie), since they can be kind of cruel and Annie does not want to be like them.]
"Thank u Anxiety" by Avenue Beat (I headcannon that Annie has anxiety. I mean, how can she not after living with neglectful parents? She was also trapped in the silence of the castle after Gwennie fell asleep. E. D. Baker gives a one-sentence aside of some silence reminding Annie of that time period. Now that I think about it, idk if that would constitute as anxiety or PTSD, but the point still stands.)
Let me know if you have a suggestion for a song! Enjoy!

ROUND 1A, MATCH 12 OUT OF 16!

*The image being used for The Wide-Awake Princess is the book cover, though neither of the characters on it are Eleanor / Cinderella. There is no official art of her that I could find and am using the book cover as a place-holder. If you have found OFFICIAL art of the character that I did not feel free to send it in.
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Eleanor:
She’s a pretty typical Cinderella, but her magic falls apart early because she bumped into the protagonist who has anti-magic >:3
Elegant "Ella":
Ella fights for labor reform! I just reread the book intentionally so I could make propaganda for her but now my head is empty only LOVE FOR ELLA. She has two (gay) fairy godfathers, she worked in a sweatshop where her mother died, she has a well-developed with her prince, Dash Charming. The glass slippers are a very important motif even though she doesn’t actually get a pair herself because she was a secret fairy godparent case because the fairy godparent organization had become corrupt and wasn’t helping needy children, only the rich. It’s a sequel to Grounded which is a Rapunzel story, but Disenchanted stands alone in the same world and it’s my most favorite of the two!! She’s so kind and helps institute kingdom wide labor reform and ahhhhhhhh
Former child laborer who wants to use her family's newfound privilege to fight for workers' rights. Brave, smart, and compassionate, although she can also be reckless, because she's just a kid and she deserves BETTER. Actually has a good relationship to her step-family, who are badass and Black like her, and there's this really touching moment at the end that recontextualizes things a lot and it's very sweet and cool worldbuilding. Her fairy godmother is two gay contractors who overthrow their boss for being complicit in a corporate espionage/coup scheme. She has a nice and believable relationship with her prince, who is a fucking dork that learns to be less of a privileged idiot and would absolutely put his ass on the line for her in return. She's just so GOOD and Disenchanted is UNDERRATED, everyone go read it.
Her goal is to improve workers rights, directly inspired by the 19th century textile industry, right down to child labor and workers getting locked in factories. Her mother died working in a sweatshop. She struggles with her working class upbringing and her new upper class status after her father's invention made them rich. Not afraid of breaking the law. She's so cool and her book is so good.

The Frog Princess (E. D. Baker)
I loved this series when I was a wee child, and I picked it up again from the library for some good old-fashioned comfort reading. (Incidentally, when Disney’s the Princess and the Frog came out, it briefly gobbled up all the search results for this series, but they’re not related.)
This is a book series for young readers! It features magic, talking animals, friendship, a (cute and tame) romantic relationship, and uhhhh magic. I love magic. And magic talking animals.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK
Talking animals! Over the course of the series, the princess Emma meets a talking prince-turned-frog, gets turned into a frog herself, meets a nice bat named Lil, and also becomes (among other things) a dragon-friend!
Character development! You get to see the characters grow and change over the course of the series!
That YA classic “feeling like you don’t fit in with your assigned role in society” theme. Listen, the girl Emma would not be running off and hiding in the swamp if everything was always easy all the time
This is a fun series, and I recommend it :)

This post made me CACKLE. Poor Andreas. Although, if you read The Matchmaker Meets A Prince- well, you'll see.
The Wide-Awake Princess series aka Andreas continually fails to get married (and I guess Annie and Liam do some stuff too)

one series that I was absolutely feral about as a child was tales of the frog princess by e.d. baker and I think the reason it did such a number on me was bc like 10% of the series is actually about her turning into a frog. the rest of it is about her turning into a fucking dragon, getting appointed grand high witch of the kingdom or something, and then fighting a big magic battle. oh and also there's the bit about her dragon daughter and her dragon son in law.
#also also there was a curse & I would like Sob every time I read the part where it finally breaks#but yea no the frogs are like the least important part of the whole series. the writer did not give a fuck about the whole frog thing#she just wanted to tell her little children's high fantasy & had to smuggle it in under popular fairy tale the princess and the frog#tales of a frog princess#e d baker#m

Tales of the Wide-Awake Princess
Ever wish you had a fairytale where a Princess found love and was responsible for finding the resolution to the curse at hand? Imagine an adventure where you're out to catch them all- all the eligible nearby Princes, that is- on behalf of your sister.
Today we’ll be reviewing another series that left an impression on me in my youth continuing on theme for this week, as I’m sure you’ve astutely guessed. Tales of the Wide Awake Princess is a series by E.D Baker named after the first novel in the series, which I suppose is tradition for novels that go on to become series. Tales of the Wide Awake Princess is not the first series by E.D Baker I…
