PARAMOUR WORLDBUILDING IN FULL

(subject to change and get more detailed but dw about it tbh)

With a population of 9 million, the country of GALERÈ is the most populous in the world and boasts the most technological advancements to upkeep with its growing populous. despite this, galerians are known to be quite self-interested and self-important, only seeking to trade with other lands in the markets of furs and luxury goods. The Sierra Blanco mountain range is a wealth of precious gems, minerals, and crystals, and its inland rolling hills and rich soil are ideal for intensive agriculture, which are its main exports, aside from the usual weaponry and technology that they shell out to the highest bidders. As it is a self-interested nation it holds and boasts no allies, and prefers to stay out of any international conflicts.

The country itself is broken into 8 districts:

DUCAT ⟶ it is a wealthy district that is known for its innovation and beautiful coastline. the interior (especially within ducat the city’s limits) are fully walkable with convenient open and closed top trolleys that run trough the streets, not to mention the plethora of personal and private airships. it is here that true galerian culture can flourish, boasting the hostage of all the chamber at their bi-annual summits, as well as The Commander and The Duchess as permanent residents.

NOTABLE PLACES:

DUCAT CITY — the capital of galere and where the royal family resides. it sits within the shadow of the lone mountain LE BASTION, its peak said to be the home of The Commander, who takes his role of overlooking the city very seriously.

LA PALAIS DU CITRON — home of The Duchess, which is surrounded by, as the name suggests, her succulent, decadent, and always ripe lemon trees. it is no secret that the duchess claims that all beauty comes from lemons and many wealthy women of Ducat City, especially those of the duchess’s inner circle, incorporate a healthy dose of lemons into their beauty regimes.

COEUR d’ENTRIX — the grand airship docking station that is a hub of trade and mercantilism in the central ducat area. the most intricate of ships are produced and launched here and are a spectacle for all to see.

CITADEL ROYALE d’ARGENT BENEAUX (The Royal Citadel of Silver Benaux) — named for the beneaux royal family, who took the crown in galere with the assistance of the chamber in 842PC, the palace was constructed with help from all aspects of the chamber. it is the main palace where the reagent resides.

BIRD’S CLAW BEACH ⟶ the only portion of Ducat’s beautiful coastline that is marred by rocks and black sand; a prison was built here to make “better usage” of the space and it is for high profile criminals and those who are awaiting execution. daily activities for prisoners include being made to go on a daily lap around the prison, which is in view of beach goers—usually the uber wealthy who will jeer and mock prisoners from their vantage point.

HALIFAX ⟶ the most important district when it comes to the events of PARAMOUR. while not the most violent region of galere, Lower Halifax, which lies between the halifax river and le petit hali (the main river’s smaller and more winding tributary), is and always has been, a large slum. on the eastern side of the halifax river lies the rolling agricultural foothills that are said to be the most beautiful scenery in all of inland Galere. to the northwest and on the western side of le petit hali lies Uptown Halifax, which is an up and coming region all on its own thanks to the harbor. As it is a main import hub for much of the rest of the world, all foreign goods pass through Uptown and her markets before they even make it to Ducat City. Ducat and Ducat City are known for being old money, but there’s no secret that the reason The Keeper has chosen to make its home here is because of the newfound wealth and mercantalism that are beginning to thrive, with The Nautical Spokes, currently managed by Myrtus Spokes making the most waves in reliable traders.

NOTABLE PLACES:

CHATEAU AUX AISLES D’OR (The Castle of Guilded Wings) — is the main setting for PARAMOUR, and the floating home of The Keeper and later his next bride and our main character Hyacinthus Shrapnel, offshore and above the ocean. travel to and from this magnificent, isolated palace can only be achieved via airship, and many are always vying to make their presence known to potentially gain the favor of its elusive owner.

CENTRAL HALIFAX — while still apart of the general barriers of lower halifax, central is where money meets squalor and is the home of the famous arena-tavern THE NIMBUS (which also serves as the headquarters of The Lock gang under the tutelage of Knox), as well as the famous WHITE ORCHID OPERA HOUSE. it is more densely populated than the rest of Lower Halifax, which has become sparse as people move closer to the harbor to look for work.

LA CASTRA ⟶ the religious epicenter of Galere and the home of both the most grandiose temple to the three divines, as well as The Bishop himself, La Castra’s populous is both inordiently poor, but is regarded as the most pious in all of the nation. What piety looks like is quite questionable, and the management practices of La Castra (its towns run by priests) has been in contention with the crown for decades now. cutting through it is the gate of divinity river, considered a blessed and holy river that can bathe away one’s sins.

NOTABLE PLACES:

SANCTUARIE D’ORAGE (Temple of the Storms) — the largest temple in all of Galere dedicated to The Shepherd, it looms over the citadel of La Castra like a bad omen; stretching so high into the sky that it obscures the view of airships, and almost seems like it touches the sun in broad daylight. it is at this temple that The Bishop does all his sermons and it is here where new priests are ordained, making it a major location for PARAMOUR as well. underneath the temple’s hallowed halls, a large labyrinth of catacombs resides—hiding the most ancient of relics in all of Galere’s history in its bone-lined walls.

THE FORTRESSE D’HUMBLE HERBE (The Fortress of Humble Grass) — floats adjacent to Sanctuarie D’Orage with a glass walkway connecting it to the temple’s upper echelon rooms. it is how The Bishop makes his way too and from sermons so as to not put too much strain on his frail body. while it appears run down and demure on the outside, its inner walls are adorned with large statues and murals of religious significance and jade pillars uphold its ceilings. certainly a metaphor for the inner religion’s greed, if nothing else.

QUAN MA ⟶ the most violent and underdeveloped region in all of galere, minus the region encircled by THE FORTUITOUS OUTER GATE, which is a large fortress wall that separates the wealthy of quan ma from the poor and desolate outskirts. It also protects the smaller, but elder port of ma, which is where The Nautical Spokes first got their start. quan ma is actually where the titular Gunn Family originates, but after the death of its patriarch, Clematis Gunn, the siblings scattered to different locals in Galere.

NOTABLE PLACES:

QUAN MA CITY — the only proper city in the district, but also rife with riff-raff and slum fodder; pollution leaks through the streets making it unpleasant even for the rich to make their home there. the only reasons to stay are the harbor; but as halifax’s harbor continues to elevate itself, much of the wealthy also begin to take flight and leave the city to its fate.

THE PEAK OF DARKNESS — the tallest mountain in all Galere, which lies smack in the middle of quan ma and is surrounded by a blackened, burnt forest and then once again surrounded by another large structure: THE WRETCHED WALL to contain the perceived evil within. in the religious doctrine of The Three Divines it is here that the Vat of Darkness resides. the holiday Solemnity of the 9th Sunday aka The Observation of the Dark (Observation de L’Obscurité) is centered around The Bishop and his most favored priests traveling to the foothills of this mountain and offering luxurious foods and sacrifices, as well as continuing the arson of local vegetation of the area to strengthen The Savior who is atop the mountain holding the vat closed. climbing the mountain and even entering it on a whim are strictly prohibited and will result in execution on sight.

DEBTOR’S LABYRINTH — in the north of quan ma’s badlands, there lies a prison for those who have committed lesser evils, mainly those who have fallen into abject poverty and are unable to pay back their debts. the name is exactly what it says it is, and it is a labyrinth where you are forced to live in—disoriented—until your sentence is up. however, because the labyrinth is isolating, booby trapped, and there are rarely any guards who properly oversee the prison, getting sent here is essentially a death sentence (unless you can find your way out and escape).

DALRY ⟶ the sister district to Ducat and home of the traditionalist movement. despite this, dalry enjoys an abundance of wealth and prosperity across the board for all social classes, due to its idyllic location in the river basin of the halifax river and the gate of divinity river, which adjoin and create the beautiful, tiered dalry falls to the east. simple living enthusiasts as well as lords and ladies with their sights set on land and property flock to dalry and it is believed to be the place with the net-happiest galarian population.

OMBEROSÈ ⟶ the most mountainous region of Galere, much of the population here is dedicated to grazing animals as well as trading from the other bordering countries to Galere’s north. it boasts the sierra blanco (white saw) mountain range that stretches partially into Quan Ma. the entire region is the second least populous district in all of Galere, but it is becoming more and more a destination location to get away from the bustles of city life. it is the only place in Galere that has a strong folkish following; emphasizing the importance of galerian tradition at its roots, before The Three Divines caught wind in the country.

NOTABLE PLACES:

OMBEROSE CITY — the only “metropolis” area that omberose has to boast, however that is a far cry from any of the other major cities that the rest of Galere has to offer. while humble, the city itself is vibrant with brightly colored buildings that represent the mountains, sea, and sunset (important pinnacles in galerian tradition), and is abundant with greenery.

VAPPES ⟶ taking its name from the second century galerian word for vapid, it is an archipelago that borders Dalry and is the true resort location for any and all travelers. its mild climate and beautiful beaches make it the hottest real estate market in all galere, however, it is marred only by the jagged and larger so, BIRD’S TALON POINT. it shares jurisdiction of the largest island off Galere’s coast, UN CACCHORO with the much smaller, newer district of DOS LEONES and the fighting along that border can become quite fierce.

NOTABLE PLACES:

UN CACCHORO — is the largest island to the southwest point of bird’s talon point. despite not being as scenic as Vappes itself, the contention over it between the two districts is fierce, even resulting in blows being exchanged. the crown has little interest in quelling these uprisings so they continue to rage unchecked and have done significant damage to the island.

BIRD’S TALON POINT — these jagged foothills are the only area in Vappes that receive snow during the winter months, and thus become a popular and more accessible destination for the increasing popularity of winter sports.

DOS LEONÈS ⟶ though it is a district, many think that’s just a formality to justify the existence of the 3 islands that are just off the coast of Bird’s Talon Point. they are barely inhabited and are usually used as pirating ports or as criminal hideaways. even still, the powers that be in Galere’s upper echelon of Ducat continue to engage in spats over the larger island UN CACCHORO, staking a claim on the southern half of the island for themselves.

These are old photos reproduced from slides that are about 44 years old. They were taken of the old cabin my son was born in. We were the last people to live in this historical cabin, built in the twenties. The roof beams were sawn at the original Mammoth Mill, back when Mammoth Lakes was a mining town, long before Mammoth was a ski town or Dave McCoy was a snow surveyor. We were blessed to live there and spend a magical year that I will never forget. No telephone or TV to distract us. Our nearest neighbor was the Sheriff's substation a few miles away. In those Sierran nights, we would entertain ourselves with music, reading and backgammon. My wife and I would read books aloud to one another. In my mind's eye, I can still hear the coyotes yipping at our front door and the deer wandering through our yard. I'm a lucky man.

Plant of the day: Black Cherry - Prunus serotina

Today I wanted to recognize a lovely early successional tree species, one of America's showiest "Cherry" species and a vigorous ecological powerhouse

Black cherry has quite the unusual range, commonly found All over the Eastern US but has multiple geographically distinctive subspecies throughout the West and Mexico. North from Minnesota to Nova Scotia south to mid Florida to east Texas, Additionally it can be found in Big Bend National Park, areas of Arizona and New Mexico. South of the border Black Cherry is found throughout the East, West, and South Sierra Madres mountains reaching as far south as Guatemala.

Black Cherry as I've encountered it grows mostly in old fields and disturbed grounds, but apparently in Mexico it occupies mountainous regions. The species is also able to live long enough to be part of some older forests as well. In terms of finding it, If you've ever driven down an Eastern-Midwest highway in May, you'll notice plenty with a stunning display of white flowers (see below). I saw them all the way out to Kansas on Route 70.

This cherry occupies weedy environments very well, usually ending up with twisted bent forms and has an incredibly high germination rate. This vigorous tree can dominate a seed bank for years (I've pulled probably thousands from my garden beds). In Europe-East Asia it is considered a problematic invasive...but here where it's native it can outcompete the worst competition.

Identifying black cherry is rather easy, it has a dark flakey semi-plated bark (below), while the stems are notably cherry like (horizontal fissures) at the stems and intact portions of bark. The heart wood is notably orangish in color and the leaves give off the cherry-like odor when crushed. Leaves are typically longish symmetrical semi-shiny, darkish green with one very visible vein and shallow serated edges. Flowers are white clusters reminiscent of horns present around late May to early June. The ripe fruit is blackish red and present around August, on a good year it's quite plentiful (and delicious).

Black cherry is a wild edible in a few forms. I personally like to snack on the sour ripe fruit and spit out the large seeds, in Mexico these fruits are referred to as cupelines! The most fruitful useage is probably making jelly from collected fruit (something I do not know how to do). Cough syrups were historically derived from the bark and are still present in popular tea flavors such as "throat coats" (awful name).

While marginally edible to us the black cherry is ecologically the most important native cherry species for wildlife. Not only is there plentiful fruit for birds and large mammals the tree is rated number three amoung supported lepidoptera species. Per Doug Tallamy and Kim Shropshire's research the Prunus genus supports [at least] 465 species of invertebrates.

In this vein a common species which inhabits these trees are eastern tent caterpillars (image from inaturalist). I bring them up only because people commonly confuse them for the spongy moth (formerly g*psy moth). But tent caterpillars live in groups and only really eat prunus species whereas spongy moths are devastating and solitary. Interestingly enough the leaves of black cherry contain enough cyanide to make these caterpillars toxic to most predators! Don't break up the tent, tent caterpillars won't kill your tree.

In terms of modern relationships with the tree, people mostly use it as a higher quality cabinetry wood. I believe this species is one of the more common cherry woods to recieve, it has a strong orange hue to its wood which lasts. People also refer this species as an aromatic wood...however having cut down multiple of these trees I hate the smell, fresh cuts are like a chemical cyanide scent...

Lastly I'll bring up causes for decline, lately I've seen a reduction in black cherry due to an introduced fungus called the black knot. This affects many cherry species and isn't always fatal but can kill a tree (hence why I cut down multiple). You can treat individuals if you spot them early by cutting infected branches and burning/burying them before they spore in spring.

Ultimately the Black Cherry is the less famous cousin to the showy Asian cherry cultivars, but still holds a punch of beauty and provides incredibly high ecological value compared to most other American trees. Happy hunting!

Mountains of the World by Rise Above Surroundings / Jut

Jut is an indicator I developed to quantify how sharply/impressively a mountain rises above its surroundings, factoring in both height and steepness. A mountain with a jut of X rises as sharply/impressively as a vertical cliff of height X. Roughly speaking, the higher the jut, the "bigger" and more imposing a mountain appears.

Some things to note:

The most impressive mountains in the world, measuring over 3000 m of jut, are Annapurna Fang (world record, jut = 3395 m), Nanga Parbat, Machapuchare, Dhaulagiri, and Gyala Peri—all of which are in the Himalaya.

The Alps have 2.5x the jut of the Colorado Rockies, despite having a similar elevation. That's because the Colorado Rockies rise from a high plateau, rather than from close to sea level. Other mountain ranges with a higher jut than the Colorado Rockies include the Canadian Rockies, Southern Alps, and even the British Columbia Coast Ranges.

Jut-to-elevation ratio increases as one moves closer to polar latitudes, as glaciers carve steeper slopes and deeper valleys. The Equatorial Andes and Patagonian Andes have a similar jut, even the Patagonian Andes have about half the elevation.

A mountain with a jut of 10 - 100 m is perhaps more aptly called a hill. Points with jut below 10 m don't rise significantly from there surroundings, and were not included.

Some regions of the world are not well-mapped in the GeoNames database, including Mexico, polar regions, and the Tibetan Plateau. Places without dots may still have mountains, that just aren't in the database and therefore couldn't get measured.

FAQ:

Q: How is jut different from prominence?

A: Prominence is actually a bit of a misnomer, and should be called "independence," as it determines whether a point rises independently enough to be considered the summit of a mountain, rather than being a subpeak or non-summit point.For instance, Lone Pine Peak in the Eastern Sierra has a low prominence of 129 m, as it is connected to Mt. Whitney, and might as well be considered a subpeak on the Whitney massif. However, its jut of 911 m is very high, as it rises very sharply above Owens Valley. There are many non-summit points with low prominence that still have a high jut, such as the Nose of El Capitan, or the rim of the Grand Canyon.On the other extreme, an example of a high-prominence, low-jut point is Dome Argus, Antarctica. Since it's the highest point on the Antarctic ice cap, its prominence a high value of 1639 m. However, since the ice cap gains elevation super gradually, its surroundings are flatter than Kansas. Not surprisingly, its jut is only 0.2 m.

Q: How does jut work?

A: Let P be the summit (highest point) of a mountain. You're standing at some point Q on the planetary surface, looking up at P. How impressively P rises above you depends on both the height (h) of P above Q and the angle of elevation (θ) of P above Q.The formula h|sin θ| factors in both height and steepness to describe how sharply/impressively a mountain rises above an observer. Note that |sin θ| equals 1 when θ = 90° (standing under a vertical cliff) and is lower for less steep rises. Thus, it can be thought of as a penalty to impressiveness incurred for lower steepness.The jut of P is the maximum possible value of h|sin θ| from any viewpoint on the planetary surface. The location that maximizes h|sin θ| can be called the "base" of a mountain, and is usually at the bottom of a major mountain face or an adjacent valley.For example, a vertical cliff of height 100 m, a 45° slope of height 141 m, and a 30° slope of height 200 m would all measure a jut of 100 m, and be considered to rise equally sharply.

A new lawsuit asks Colombia to recognize that jaguars, military macaws and the nation’s tropical dry forest have legal rights to “life, health and integrity.”

The case is the latest in the “rights of nature” movement, which aims to garner recognition from courts and legislatures that ecosystems and individual species have legal rights, similar to humans and nonhuman entities like corporations.

According to the complaint, filed earlier this month by the nonprofit Amar Madre Tierra Foundation, mining operations have violated the rights of the tropical dry forest—Colombia’s most threatened ecosystem—as well as jaguars and macaws living in the vicinity of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a mountain range in Northern Colombia.

The lawsuit, filed with a Colombian court in the Magdalena region, also asks the court to recognize the rights of sacred Indigenous spaces located throughout the tropical dry forest of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Colombia’s tropical dry forest was once the size of Maine. Only about eight percent is left. Known as the “forest of a thousand colors” for its dense greenery and flowering trees in the rainy season, the region is home to hundreds of rivers and streams that supply drinking water to more than a million people. Local communities also rely on it for cultural wealth and livelihoods.

The complaint alleges that, since 2007, mining operations for construction materials’ have negatively impacted the forest and sacred spaces by contaminating rivers and streams, generating noise pollution, and releasing excessive amounts of dust into the atmosphere. Those mining impacts, combined with other development, have put the ecosystem into “a critical state of fragmentation and degradation,” the complaint says.

Habitat loss and degradation is the main driver of population decline among Colombian jaguars, critically endangered in the country, and military macaws, which are considered threatened. In addition to extractive activities like mining, the species face threats from agricultural and cattle ranching expansion, urbanization, fire, unsustainable tourism, hunting and poaching.

For jaguars, the loss of habitat shrinks the availability of food sources, driving the cats to feed off livestock populations and, in turn, making them a target of illegal killings by ranchers defending their herds. The complaint cites reports of at least three attempted killings of jaguar adults, one of which was a mother with two cubs that appeared to be looking for food near farms.

Military macaw populations have also dropped in Colombia due to the demand within and outside the country for their sale as pets. Macaws are one of the most trafficked birds in the illegal wildlife trade, which is estimated to be worth at least $7 billion annually. Jaguars are also highly sought out by traffickers, with high demand for their body parts coming from China for use in Eastern medicine practices.

Wolfen & Warlocks

A few days ago I rolled up some versions of Cliff and Sierra for a tabletop roleplaying game of my own creation, and it was very fun! Definitely going to play around with that some more in future.

For now, though, I thought I'd lay out a little more about the Sarantian Races, and reiterate my offer to put together/draw other muses in this little fantasy world - more under the cut:

What is Sarant? A high fantasy world I've been devising for nearly fifteen years now, with one self-published book on the market and several more in the works. It is a place inhabited by the various Amkyn races, whose primitive ancestors emerged from the earliest fonts of primal magic, and also the Arriv, an allied collection of peoples descended from refugees that arrived from other worlds entirely.

The Arriv Elf, dwarf, human, orc, and goblin are outliers in this wild land, using their 'celestial' magics to skirt the natural order of things and praying to a pantheon of gods called the Immosi.

Elves have long since made themselves at home in the Grand Forest and along the shores of its Long Lake. They are classified as Middling-Tall, receive a +2 Attunement bonus, and originally created the trasformative magic called Alchemy

Dwarves dwell in the extensive cavern system beneath the towering Wide Mounts and their many foothills. They are classified as Middling-Short, receive a +2 Strength bonus, and originally created the crafting magic called Sorcery

Humans spread throughout much of the Southern Fields and can be found in communities of all sizes along the river lines. They are classified as Middling, receive a +2 Intuition bonus, and originally created the manipulation magic called Wizardry

Orcs live in either the Eastern Woodlands or Grey Crags depending on their philosophical ideologies, the meckle and the kunal. They are classified as Large, receive a +2 Fortitude bonus, and originally created the health-based Sacrificial magic.

Goblins founded a new home in the extensive and bountiful Marhok Marshlands of the southwest. They are classified as Small, receive a +2 Agility bonus, and originally created the space-folding Astral magic.

The Amkyn Of all the many non-sapient animal species to cover the vast array of environments in the world, only twenty have given rise to more advanced Amkyn peoples, capable of craftship, culture, and civilization. Some of these races are older and more powerful than others, but each answer to their representative god upon the Primari Council.

Natural Abilities and Bonuses come inherent to each race; Wolfen cannot learn Elemental Magics, Amkyn as a whole are unable to use Celestial Magics, and Arriv remain barred from the Primal category of Natural Magics. Other than those restrictions, any personage is free to pick and choose whatever skills they prefer from these areas of study:

New characters begin with four choices; leveling up allows the option of adding a new ability to one's skillset, or upgrading one already known to improve its output.
