Mijn maatje bij een Oost-Duits maatje. Want dat is wat de naam Trabant betekent. De Trabant werd vanaf 1957 geproduceerd in Oost-Duitsland en was de voornaamste auto waarmee tot de val van de muur werd rondgereden. Het buitenwerk van de auto werd, vanwege een staaltekort door westerse boycots, gemaakt van Duroplast. Dit was een kunststof vervaardigt uit katoenvezels uit de Sovjet-Unie en bruinkool uit Oost-Duitsland. Latere modellen werden wel uit staal vervaardigd. Ondanks het ouderwetse imago was de Trabant in de jaren ‘60 en ‘70 een verhoudingsgewijs moderne en goede auto. Pas in de jaren ‘80 werd de auto qua technologie duidelijk voorbijgestreefd door de meeste compacte westerse modellen. In totaal zijn er meer dan 3 miljoen Trabantjes gebouwd. Na de val van de muur in 1989 kreeg de Trabant een cultstatus. —————— The Trabant was a car which was manufactured in Eastern Germany from 1957 until 1991. The Trabant was a modern car in the 60’s and 70’s. Trains, who doesn’t love them? Our son does and therefore this wagon in the middle of Rotterdam was a nice surprise! The wagon is a 1980 build East-German Mitropa dining car. It mainly was used in the line Leipzig-Binz. After the unification of Germany in 1989 it became absolute and was sold. It ended in Uden, where it was shortly used as a restaurant. In 2014 it again was sold and was ment to be placed at station Hofplein in Rotterdam. Due to problems with permits, this idea was abandoned and a new location was found at the spot where discotheque Palace was burned down at the Anthoniestraat in Rotterdam. About 40 meters of tracks were specially placed at the location.
