The first KFC opened in Beijing in 1987— 9 years after the Reform and Opening-up. On the opening day, there was a ceremony featuring traditional Chinese dance and a huge crowd of curious and excited Chinese customers waiting to get inside the 3-floor building and experiencing the Western fast food service for the first time. The average time of waiting is 2 hours, but it didn’t wear out their passion.  When I was little, eating KFC equals eating in a cool and fancy western restaurant. Some of my friends had their birthday parties there. Young couples went there for dates. Friends went there to chill out and chat. It was only until I went abroad did I realize the opposite image of the same brand. Even the menu was different. Looking back, my passion for Western fast food during those days seems absurd, but it was also real and understandable in that historical context.
