The Ghost was well and truly stranded. In the middle of blasted nowhere with no planet in sight for hundreds of lightyears in all directions.

Hera swore as she examined the smoking hyperdrive, the broken cables spitting electrical sparks, then swore again for good measure.

“Hey,” a cheery voice exclaimed behind her, and she lifted her gaze to the ceiling. “I thought we weren’t supposed to use that word!”

Hera turned around to face Ezra and put her hands on her hips.

“You can’t use that word,” she corrected. “I can.”

Ezra mumbled something about unfair rules, and why was he even listening to her, she wasn’t his mother and Hera indulged in a private smile when he vanished back into the hall. To be replaced by Kanan.

“How’s it looking?” he asked, stepping into the engine room, then winced as another shower of sparks spewed from the hyperdrive.

The exhaustion that had been lingering in the edges of Hera’s awareness crashed into her with a vengeance and blurred her vision for a moment, her throbbing headache creeping into the bases of her lekku.

“Bad,” she said and sighed. “Worse than bad. We’ll probably be stranded for a few days without Sabine here to help Chopper and me repair the drive. But you know what? It’s fine. I’ll take care of it later. I feel like I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in a whole week. I’m gonna… I’m gonna lie down. And take a nap. Yes.”

Kanan made a bemused sound as she walked by and squeezed his shoulder, not capable to acknowledging him further—not right now. Too tired.

“Just don’t do anything stupid while I’m asleep, alright? I don’t want to wake up to the ship being on fire”—she grimaced and gestured vaguely in direction of the hyperdrive—“more than it already is.”

Upstairs in her cabin, she barely had time to take off her goggles before collapsing on her bunk and falling promptly asleep.

Hera startled awake only half an hour later, the cause being a very distressed sounding droid.

“Not now, Chopper,” she slurred and rolled over to bury her face in the pillow.

But Chopper kept on blabbering, then pulled at her blanket—and once she realized what he was so distressed about, she sat up so quickly she got dizzy.

“Kanan’s doing what?”

A minute later, she was stomping back down with a chattering Chopper in tow, scowling when she heard the clatter of tools and hissed curses even before she set foot inside the engine room.

“Kanan Jarrus, what in the galaxy do you think y—” She cut off when she saw him, unable to do anything but simply stare. And then an unbidden, small giggle escaped her. And another. And then she full on burst into laughter.

Kanan was sitting cross-legged next to the ruined drive with what looked like every kind of tool they had on the ship strewn on the floor around him, visor discarded, strands of hair that had escaped his ponytail framing his face in disarray, and a large smudge of oil on his cheek. The hyperdrive was still spitting sparks like a miniature death trap just waiting for a being made of flesh and blood to get too close.

Hearing her, he turned his head in her direction.

“I thought you wanted to lie down.” He frowned when Hera couldn’t hold in another giggle. “What’s so funny?”

That set her off again, and she quickly moved into the room to pull him just a little further away from the sparking drive.

“Love, did you forget to turn off the power? You’re going to—oh, stars, hold on,” Hera said and stifled a laugh with her palm. “You’re going to electrocute yourself.”

Kanan groaned and let himself fall back to sprawl across the floor. “And my near-electrocution is funny to you why, exactly?”

Hera huffed a sigh. “Well, you were being very stupid,” she said and sat down next to him to poke him in the arm. He gave her an exasperated twitch of his eyebrows. “But you looked so cute I couldn’t help but laugh.”

“I’m glad you’re having fun at my expense,” Kanan said, but his tone was light. “You know, I actually wanted to do something nice for you.”

“And I appreciate that.” Hera smirked. “How about we both go and take a nap and then you can help me repair it?”

An indignant grunt came from the door, and Hera shot Chopper an amused glance.

“I apologize. Help Chopper and me repair it, of course.”

“Deal,” Kanan said, now sounding as exhausted as Hera had been feeling, and she leaned down to place a lingering kiss on his forehead. Kanan searched for her hand with his and intertwined their fingers.

“On further thought,” she murmured against his skin, “let’s just keep sitting here for a little while.”

Her headache was as good as gone.
