Edgar Wright Challenge Even though I feel like I've revisited the Scream franchise not too long ago, I thought it would be fun to just rewatch them before getting to 6. People can disagree with me all they want, but I really enjoyed 3 and 4. Obviously, the first one is by the best. But outside of some minor complaints, I thought 2 through 4 are very solid. I really don't like 5 and 6... Well, 6 is ok. I hate the ending, though. After that, some old favorites with a new favorite peppered in for good measure. Edgar Wright Challenge I forgot to post last week's movies, so I'll be making a 2 parter this week. Decided to mix it up a little last week. Rewatched some old favorites and some new ones. @mikepecci was cool enough to pick my name for his 12KM short film. So, I had to add that to the mix. His film was pretty dope. Edgar Wright Challenge Day 12 Skinamarink I unfortunately had to put January Giallo on hold today (I'll make it up my next week) cause I didn't have time to squeeze in another movie since we had plans and then decided last minute to catch this film. Obviously its as far from a giallo as you can get. But still counts for the @edgarwright challenge. Normally I don't bother saying this cause I feel I can stay away from it. But I got to say it now just in case: POSSIBE MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!! Now I do have to state. I love myself some off kilter films. Der Todesking, Antichrist (Hell, most Von Trier films actually), Subconscious Cruelty, etc. So art house and weird can work for me. But this film... I don't know. It's just too abstract for me. The shot choices go from being possibly creepy and unsettling to plain boring. The lack of any real explanation lost me as well. There's no real pay off the 100 or so minutes I was staring at walls. I almost fell asleep a couple of times cause watching either white noise on a black screen or a wall wasn't keeping my interest. And the loud noises to get the jump scares was just hilariously bad. I do feel this will divide some people. There's going to be some over pretentious turd waffle that will say how it's a metaphor for whatever and how it just flew over our heads. I don't really care. Anyone can like or dislike what they want. This most definitely wasn't for me. January Giallo Day 31 Suspiria There's not too much more to say about my love for this film that I haven't already said. There's no way I can watch a months worth of gialli and not watch the movie that started my love for the genre. Even though I literally just watched it with the score performed live by @claudiosimonettisgoblin. Along with some other greats, this is a yearly watch for me at this point. Doesn't get old at all. Plus, @arrowvideo really needs to make that 4K Box Set happen already. Inferno @laceyofthedead has never seen this film. I've only watched it once before and I needed a rewatch for sure. I remember digging it, and I'm so ready for @arrowvideo to finally release a 4K box of this along side all the other @darioargento_official films they already have. Watching these first 2 mothers back to back definitely gives more appreciation to Inferno. Love the color play, and the sets. My main issue with this film is certian scenes feel long and dragged out. The story suffers a little because of it. This might be a US cut thing and maybe the Italian version is better. I don't know. Unfortunately this is the only version I've seen on @shudder and @tubi. Either way, a solid close out to January Giallo. Saw a lot of unseen and under appreciated gialli. Most were fantastic, some dropped the ball a little. January Giallo Day 30 The New York Ripper I had to go with a nice grimey giallo for tonight, and this one is a pure grime and sleaze. This is definitely one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. A killer that disguises his voice like Donald Duck is not something I thought I'd want to watch, let alone actually seriously enjoy. Especially enough to own the now OOP @blueundgroundfilms limited edition with lenticular slip. But as a giallo, it's good a solid story. The duck voice at first is impossible to take seriously. You have to laugh at it. Then it keeps happening, and the murders get more and more brutal. It starts to get creepy watching the brutality and listening to a dude quack. Don't get me wrong, it's hard not to laugh. But upon first learning about this film, I figured it would ruin the movie. And it strangely doesn't. January Giallo Day 29 The Last Matinee Picked another recent favorite of mine and definitely a modern take on giallo. I managed to score the now OOP @vinegarsyndrome cope with exclusive slip AND the @arrowvideo limited edition with slip and poster. I really enjoyed this movie. There's no nudity, which makes sense since the story doesn't call for it. But its compensation is a metric ass ton of blood and gore. I haven't seen this much eyeball trauma since the old school Fulci films. The premise is really creepy, too. A random psychopath just goes on a calculated murder spree in a dark and almost empty movie theater. For what seems like no other reason than he enjoys it. January Giallo Day 28 The Editor Had to go with another recent favorite of mine. I was so jazzed I found out about this movie. Any giallo fan needs to watch this insanity. This film is so good a parodying giallo that it ends up being a pretty damn good giallo in its own right. The film has countless nods to all the greats and pokes fun in the same breath. The bonkers story goes even further off the rails by the end just to prove it can. The practical effects are top notch. There is so much random nudity and sex that it's almost softcore, but in a satirical way. January Giallo Day 26 Smile Before Death Decided to go into another unseen gem before the month ends. This film is from my @arrowvideo Giallo Essentials black set. This one seemed interesting since it was taking all the murder mystery stuff and adding more complexity to it. The violence was light, but they made it count more towards the story. Tons of nudity and some hilariously bad acting from one particular actor, but nothing so bad it ruins the movie. The story had a bunch of twists and turns. Especially near the end. What you think is true ends up being the furthest from it. It was a nice touch. Even the last minute kept you on your toes. January Giallo Day 24 Last Night in Soho Decided to go with another giallo inspired film and a recent favorite of kline for tonight. January Giallo Day 23 Censor Decided to go with another giallo inspired film and @laceyofthedead has never seen this one. I also got to finally bust out that amazing double slip copy from @vinegarsyndrome I bought awhile ago. Still one of the most gorgeous styles of packaging that no one really does. This is definitely a more recent favorite of mine. Upon learning more about the Video Nasties and all that jazz, this was a nice throwback to that era. The color palette is where you see the beautiful nod to technicolor nightmares. I love the reds and blues all mixing in. The story is also super interesting and I loved the bleak ending. Just a descent into madness and creating your own reality. January Giallo Day 22 The Black Belly of the Tarantula Another "best of" list pick. At least I can say most of those are really good. This was no exception. Very solid. I really liked how the story fleshed itself out. It's always a welcome surprise when the cop isn't a complete idiot. The killer was sadistic in his method of killing, which was a nice touch. The motive was a little silly, but not too bad. January Giallo Day 21 Seven Blood Stained Orchids Since I picked up the Lenzi/ Baker set from @severin last year, I've been looking into more films by Umberto Lenzi. This one showed up on several 'best of' lists, decided to give a go today. So far, the movie's great. I'll have to finish it tomorrow since I had a gig tonight and didn't have time to finish it. The story is interesting, and the fact that the killer is changing his style is also interesting. I only have 30 mins left, and for the first time in a while, I don't know who the killer is yet. Normally, I manage to nail it by half way through the movie.
