Lights out and away we go!
The words ring in my ears as I start driving. Starting from P4 isn't bad, but George, Charles and Max were in front of me. Max obviously sped off, Charles following close behind.
I managed to pass George after turn 1, but Charles and Max already had a big gap between us.
After 5 laps I managed to catch up to charles and almost pass him, but turn 13 fucked it up.
“How much time is between me and leclerc?” I ask through the radio. “0.7 second, keep it up, you're almost in the DRS zone.” “copy.”
I do my best to keep this distance until the DRS zone, once in I manage to pass him with ease, putting me in P2.
Luckily Charles couldn't pass me, except for when I pitted, but i quickly regained my spot.
---------------🏎️---------------
“P2, P2. good job!”
I sit in silence for a while, driving in the car. P2? In the first race of the season? First race of my career in f1? P2?!
“Y/N?” I hear my engineer, shaking me out of the daze I was in.
“P2? Are you serious?” “very”
“WOOOO! P2 BABY!” I yell in excitement as I pull up to the p2 stand, getting out of the car.
I quickly take off my helmet to see who I ended up on the podium with.
“Max? Natuurlijk ben jij P1!" (of course you’re P1!) I congratulate Max, turning around to see Charles’ car pull into the p3 stand.
“Charles! Congrats man!” I walk up to his Ferrari, hugging him as soon as he climbs out of his car.
“Congrats Y/N you did amazing!”
I smile and run to my team, “P2 baby!” “Where did Logan end?”
“He got P8.” My mouth drops, p8? That's such an improvement from his time with Williams!
---------------🏎️---------------
The cooldown room was quiet when I entered it, probably because Max and Charles were too busy chugging their water bottles.
I sigh in contentment and grab my own water bottle, drinking every last drop.
“Congrats on P2 in your very first F1 race, Y/N.” Charles claps me on the back, making me almost choke on my water.
Max laughs in the background and I glare at him as I swallow my water.
“Thanks Charles, you did a great job as well! And Max?”
“Yeah?”
“I hope you choke on your water” I smile at him, making Charles burst into laughter.
“Wow! Okay! What happened to, ‘beetje medelijden voor een mede-Nederlander'?" (A little compassion for a fellow Dutchman?) Max fakes being hurt as I stick my tongue out to him.
---------------🏎️---------------
Standing on the podium feels the same, yet so different from F2 and F3… nevertheless, it's an amazing feeling. Standing there, the trophee in my hands and champagne next to me and millions of people watching me stand there next to Max and Charles. The Dutch national anthem in the background.
I laugh as I put the trophee down and grab the champagne, already being targeted by both Charles and Max.
I launch the bottle down to the floor as the liquid starts spraying everywhere, mostly at Max and Charles, but also my team who are below the stands.
Everything seems to go in slow motion as I put the bottle to my mouth and drink the liquid, Max and Charles doing the same.
The first woman to stand on the F1 podium..
---------------🏎️---------------
“Y/N!” I turn around and see Logan running up to me.
“Logan! Congrats on P8!” I give him a hug, smiling.
“I was going to ask you if you wanted to come with us to get dinner, to celebrate.” He smiles when I nod.
“Wait, you said ‘us’ who else is going?” I question him.
“You, me, Max, Charles, George, Lando, Lewis, Carlos and Oscar.” He smiles, making me smile.
“Then what are we waiting for? Let's go!” I exclaim as I run to my black lambo, Logan following closely behind.
The ride there wasn't too long, since the restaurant was almost next to our hotel, which isn't too far from the track either.
“We're here, ready to celebrate?” Logan grins as he turns the car off.
I nod, a huge smile on my face as I get out of the car.
I wait for a hot minute to wait for Logan as he gets out of the car.
“Let’s go!” I exclaim as I speed walk into the restaurant. As soon as I enter I see the others sitting at the reserved table.
“Hi guys!” I smile as I sit down next to Lando, who smiles at me. Logan takes the seat next to me.
“We thought you guys weren't coming.” Max jokes, making me stick out my tongue at him. “Ha ha, very funny Max, why wouldn't we come? We had amazing results!” I laugh, making the rest of the table laugh too.
“Have you seen twitter lately?” Lando asks me, “No, why?”
“You're getting mixed responses to being the only woman on the grid..” His response made me look at him confused.
“I take it I shouldn't look at it?” I smile, already knowing the answer.
Lando only confirmed it by nodding his head. I put my phone back in my purse and grabbed the menu.
“Did you guys already order?” Most of the table shook their heads.
“We wanted to wait until you two were finally here.” Lewis smiles at me.
The waiter comes and we all order. After we got our food and started eating, I took a second to look around the table.
All talented male drivers, and me, a female driver who somehow got a seat with Lamborghini..
I sigh and Carlos notices, looking at me with a look that says, ‘are you okay?’, to which I nod. When I start eating I notice in the corner of my eye that Lando is looking at me, but I pay it no mind and enjoy the food in front of me.
---------------🏎️---------------
After we all finally finished our food, we paid separately and went on our way. Me, Lando and logan staying behind for a little.
“So.. how was your first ever F1 race?” Lando asked and I could sense the awkwardness in his voice.
I smile, “Amazing, the whole grid is nice, our team is great! The car is just… wow, I don't have enough words to describe this feeling.” Logan and Lando smile at that as the valet comes out with Logan’s car.
I give Lando a hug and we get in the car.
“How was your food?” I ask Logan, trying to make conversation.
“It was good, yours?” okay.. We're both awkward..
I nod and look out the window, enjoying the view.
---------------🏎️---------------
I dropped myself on my bed, the hotel we're staying at was amazing, comfortable beds, huge bathroom, just amazing.
Logan's room isn't far from mine, literally next to mine.
I sigh, a smile on my face as I look towards the giant window overlooking the race track. A ping comes from my phone. It's Logan,
‘Plane leaves at 8, meet at my room at 6?’
I quickly reply, ‘I'll be there!’
8 am.. So early…
I roll my eyes at the time.
I get up from the bed and walk to the bathroom, getting ready for bed.
When I return I see my phone on my bed, exploding with messages, both from messages and twitter.
I remember what Lando said at dinner, ‘You’re getting mixed responses to being the only woman on the grid..’
I pick up my phone and decide to look at the messages first, seeing messages from almost the whole grid, but mostly Lando and Logan.
‘Don't listen to whatever they say’ -Lando
‘If you want to talk, i'm here’ -Logan
‘Twitter doesn't know anything, you're an amazing driver and friend’ -Lando
‘I think they might be blind, you got p2 all on your own’ -Lando
‘You're an amazing friend, teammate and driver and you're a world champion in f2 and f3! Don't listen to them!’ -Logan
Their messages put worry in me and I hesitated clicking on the twitter icon..
But I eventually did and what I read and saw…

"Yeah, to be honest I'm a little bit scared." You chuckled as you got out of the car with Max. The blond didn't waste anytime going around and holding your hand. You two have been doing that for a while, it was comforting. And although it was just simple, holding hands, it was helping a lot with your relationship.
"Why? I wont let the media bother you." Sure this would be your first time in public public with Max. Everyone knows that he got married but they don't know to who. This would be your first official appearance as his wife. People are going to take pictures, write articles about you, they might antagonize or judge your every move and mistake.
But what scared you more is watching your husband go in a miniature Rocketship, driving 250 kph around the tight circuit of Monaco, which you could've just watched from your balcony. But no. Max wanted you here. And here you will be.
You stuck close to him the entire morning. Either holding the back of his shirt or sitting in the back of the garage. The only alone time you did get was 30 minutes before race prep, sitting with him in his driver's room.
"I'm scared." You said again, slumping your back in the chair. Max looked furrowing his eyebrows taken aback. Since he was used to getting in the car every weekend. He didn't really understand your fear. "What if you crash? Or you get caught in a crash or— I don't even want to think about it." You groaned, leaning your face in your hands.
"Mijn liefje," [my love] He got on his knees in front of you, gently pulling your hands from your face. "I'm gonna be fine." He tried to assure you but you shook your head quickly. What if you weren't a lucky charm. What if you were the complete opposite?!
"Hey! Hey. Relax. I'll be fine." He kissed your cheek sitting beside you and pulling you into a side hug. "But if something happens? I don't want you to get hurt." it was surly a pleasant surprise, you initiating a hug. Max liked it, for sure (you're his wife). The embrace was warm and calming. You didn't want to let go.
"If something happens . . ." He tried to think of something, something that would comfort you. He wrapped his arms around your hack and rubbed it gently.
"I'll do whatever you want. For a month." "Max!" "What?! het is een redelijk goede deal." [it's a pretty good deal]
At least he got you to laugh it off.
★ ☆ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"Kiss." Max told you as he went to take his helmet off.
Kiss?! Infront of everyone?! Max Verstappen you are crazy.
Max made a 'mmmmuah' sound as he pressed his lips to yours softly. Sure that was one way to celebrate a win, BUT NOT WITH THE WHOLE WORLD WATCHING!! You felt flustered.
Everyone was looking at you and you could only look at max who was held your hand softly at you whilst he chatted with his mechanics and team principle.
He was all flushed and sweaty, that soft, yet cute smile on his face as he used his hands to 'maxplain'. You couldn't help the chuckle that left your mouth. You wrapped your arm around his, leaning your head on his shoulder. And you stayed like that until Max had to leave for the podium.
The minutes the top 3 spend in the cool down room felt too long but it was all worth it once you heard his name be called to the stage. Hearing the Dutch anthem gave you a sense of pride as you watched max. You even pulled your phone out to record him receive his trophy and the blond even waved to the camera.
"its heavier than I thought." you chuckled quietly once you got to hold the trophy. Max laughed with you, putting a hand on your opposite shoulder, watching you admire the prize. "It's for you." He kissed your temple. You couldn't help but smile and giggle like a child, kissing your husband on his lips.
★ ☆ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"There she is." You smiled as you neared max with the two drinks he asked for. You could tell he was already drunk as he pulled you to sit on his lap, not even bothering to take the glass of whisky out of your hands so he can wrap his arms around your waist and drink from your hand.
"Oh- sorry. Gorge, this is my lovely wife. Lovely wife, this is gorge." He pointed between the driver sitting on the couch with you. The conversation went on and you got to meet other drivers along with their wives or girlfriends.
The night ended after a game of beer pong and soon very tipsy you and drunk max was dancing mindlessly and very off tune on the balcony.
"nooit geweten dat ik met Angel getrouwd was." [i never knew I was married to angel] You giggled slightly at his words, sloppily sharing a sweet kiss. Your hand was in his hair and the other on his cheek. The moment was perfect, the moon was only light you need to see his eyes. The way he held you, the way he looked at you. You could swear you were going to melt each time he said your name quietly.
click
You frowned turning around to see where the flash of white light had come from. You were sure you heard a camera click and women giggle but your eyes found nothing.
"nee nee, mijn lieveling. blijf bij mij." [no no, my darling. stay with me] Max held you from your chin, pulling you back into the kiss with a satisfied hum.
"ik deel je mening." [im with you] You nodded wrapping your arms around his neck.

"There's a rather remarkable feature on Kovacs' new album: none other than Rammstein's Till Lindemann lends his voice to the hyper-personal title track 'Child Of Sin'. The singer from Brabant explains how that came about. "It turns out that I lived 500 meters from him without knowing it."
Yes, it's quite a gap, from 2018 to 2023. Longer than the intention was to come up with a new album. But yes, as it goes: Kovacs wanted a new manager, a new label, she was struggling with herself, and then covid came. 'Life', concludes the singer, who is currently putting the dots on the i with regard to her album Child Of Sin. "I've come to realize more and more that I just have to be independent. I was with Warner for years, but it didn't quite work. There were too many people with ideas, it was getting further and further away from me. The past few years have been quite intense mentally. Music was always my outlet, and it didn't really work anymore. That means you have to go back to yourself. I now live in a converted pigsty in my parent's backyard. I started painting, taught myself how to sew. And I started making music.”
We first met Sharon Kovacs in 2016, when she debuted with the album Shades Of Black and the beautiful single 'My Love', a cinematic soul pop anthem reminiscent of the great songs of Shirley Bassey and the well-crafted modern soul of Amy Winehouse. And Kovacs is not a far cry from those big stars. It is a special one, you saw and heard that immediately. In interviews she revealed herself and her violent past. She was abused at a young age, which left traces throughout her childhood. “I never knew my biological father, my mother was not ready for children,” she sums up. ‘I was largely raised by my grandparents, but when I was eleven I was removed from home. As I grew up, I became sexually weird and very active, very young. People thought that was gross, and I always had the feeling that there was something "dirty" about me. In recent years I have been going back to the child in me a lot in therapy. I've had to tell that kid over and over that it's okay, that it's not her fault."
Master of suffering
A child for gallows and wheel, or as Kovacs calls it in her song: 'Child Of Sin'. It is her most intimate, vulnerable song to date, as she has to peel off the protective layers she built around herself after being abused at a young age. “Many times I thought I made it all up. I was also misunderstood at the time, and my abuser tried to manipulate me in all sorts of ways. My family now recognizes things retrospectively, and it's a dark thought that many things that have happened in my life were not necessary. I felt unsafe.”
It's no wonder that Kovacs didn't really dare to sing this song on her own. And when her manager asked if she wouldn't mind recording it as a duet, only one name came to mind: Till Lindemann, lead singer of Rammstein. A band where Kovacs felt a connection from an early age - from the time when MTV played 'Sonne' non-stop. And a song like 'Puppe' from 2019, where the main character pulls the head off a doll in a blind rage, hits Kovacs. Till Lindemann, a master at portraying suffering and not afraid to dig deep into himself. But yes, the frontman of just about the largest touring rock band in Europe. “I thought: I know someone who has worked with him in Berlin. I have one chance.”
500 meter
And miraculously, that attempt arrived. There was no record company or publisher involved. It was Lindemann himself who called: 'I heard that we are going to record a duet.' Kovacs: 'He thought it was a beautiful song, and he invited me to his house. It turns out that I lived 500 meters from him in Berlin for a year, and he sometimes visits places in the city where I also like to go. What kind of places? Um, I don't know, haha. Till was very cooperative and interested. He wanted to know the context, he wanted me to feel comfortable with it. We have built a special relationship. He calls me "my crazy friend". If I had been with a label this would never have worked, it would have been printed. I did all this alone.”
Lindemann sings the second verse of 'Child Of Sin', in English. That was what he wanted most, says Kovacs. And the collaboration didn't stop there, because the German also came to Amsterdam to record a video clip. “He was very sweet,” says Kovacs of that day. “He said to me at one point: you flutter like a bat, take it easy! Yes, I know, I replied. I just want the best for your baby. He really understands how important this is to me.”
The album Child Of Sin can be listened to everywhere from today, and the video clip with Till Lindemann will also be released this afternoon."

Winners ranking oof
Below the cut. I don't hate any of them, as a side note
Personal favorites
1. Fairytale (Norway 2009) - When I found out about this, around the time I became an eurofan in 2018, I was in awe. It's so catchy and fun and omg I love the violin. Perfect
2. Nocturne (Norway 1995) - Want my anxiety to drop down to 0? play this song at any given moment
3. Waterloo (Sweden 1974) - Schalger pop songs from the 70s are my weakness. And how can you not love ABBA?
4. Dansevise (Denmark 1963) - There's something so charming about this whole performance. The singers' stage presence, the flow of the song, the guitar, like idk man it's so beautiful...
5. Heroes (Sweden 2015) - 12 y/o me had her eyes glued to the screen when this was on stage and whenever I re-listen to this I feel the same feeling as I did back then. The first ever eurovision song that I was obsessed with!
6. Arcade (Netherlands 2019) - Nothing more to say. Loving you is a losing game is a huge icon at this point
7. Poupée de cire, poupée de son (Luxembourg 1965) - I love the beat and how bouncy and cheerful it sounds. Her entire career story is so heartbreaking though I couldn't not feel bad for her...
8. Zitti e Buoni (Italy 2021) - Never forget the edgy italian rockers 😔😔
9. Tu te reconnaîtras (Luxembourg 1973) - I get such a nostalgic feeling from this, it's as if I've heard this several times in my childhood before but I can't exactly remember. The piano bits are so lovely
10. Fångad av en stormvind (Sweden 1991) - Why is everyone so harsh on this song, I'll never understand...I love how energetic it is!! It's probably my favorite Carola song tbh (okay I also really like Främling but shhhh)
11. Een beetje (Netherlands 1959) - Cute sassy song that could fit so well in an old disney movie? Yes please
12. Insieme: 1992 (Italy 1990) - Ah yes, the superior "peace and unity" song that actually feels genuine. I swear I've heard this before in the past actually, like before I listened to the esc winners
13. Hallelujah (Israel 1979) - Yes guys bring me the harmonies
14. La det swinge (Norway 1985) - Groovy nordic pop from the 80s my beloved, I love their outfits a lot! 💜
15. A-ba-ni-bi (Israel 1978) - It's so catchy like whenever I listen to this I have it on loop for 5 days straight
16. Vivo Cantando (Spain 1969) - I love this one too! Out of the 4 winners this or Netherlands were the best imo
17. Save your kisses for me (United Kingdom 1976) - Being this wholesome should be illegal /j
18. Un banc, un arbre, une rue (Monaco 1971) - Same story as Tu te reconnaitras, I kind of have the same feelings for both, I get this strange, nostalgic yet comforting deja-vu when I listen to them
19. The Voice (Ireland 1996) - It's so magical and mysterious, teleports me to another world everytime I listen
20. Puppet on a string (United Kingdom 1967) - This feels so wholesome and sweet, I always like these kind of carnival themed songs for some reason
21. De Troubadour (Netherlands 1969) - Love how melancholic yet upbeat it sounds, and the guitar is just amazing
22. Apres toi (Luxembourg 1972) - Makes me feel emotions that I didn't even experience, how great this is...
23. Molitva (Serbia 2007) - It's so anthemic, I feel connected to this song on a personal level
24. Euphoria (Sweden 2012) - It's universally known as the best esc winner, and I do like it but feel that it's a bit too overhyped and all? haven't willingly listened to this for a while, even though I still admire the choreography and whole stage show, which was indeed amazing!
25. L'oiseau et l'enfant (France 1977) - Favorite french winner, hands down
Really like this ones
26. My number one (Greece 2005) - Grown a bit off me lately because I've been way too fixated on the retro winners but still a classic nonetheless. The stage show is just so perfect
27. Rise like a phoneix (Austria 2014) - Outstanding. I'm so impressed by the melody and especially the lyrics
28. Rock me baby (Yugoslavia 1989) - Underrated as heck, it's so funky and the message is interesting!
29. Diggi-loo Diggi-ley (Sweden 1984) - Diggiloo diggiley himlen öppnade sig yeah don't ask me I know the lyrics to this by heart
30. Net als toen (Netherlands 1957) - She looks like she's telling a whole life story, I love this
31. Nous les amoureux (Luxembourg 1961) - Yet another one that I didn't care about before, but when I gave it a try I really liked it. Didn't know he was actually singing about a same gender relationship?? In the early 60s??
32. Love Shine a Light (United Kingdom 1997) - Gives me a warm, comforting feeling, absolutely amazing
33. Boom bang-a-bang (United Kingdom 1969) - Yesss this is so cute as well, I love her expressions lol
34. Hold me now (Ireland 1987) - The superior Johnny Logan song
35. Ne partez pas sans moi (Switzerland 1988) - A literal queen, this was a no brainer win for that year
36. Refrain (Switzerland 1956) - Teleports me into the 50s. Oh to be a singer in the 50s...how would that be?
37. Ding-a-dong (Netherlands 1975) - The lyrics are incredibly silly, though the melody is super catchy
38. Only teardrops (Denmark 2013) - So beautiful, especially the flute.
These are good
39. 1944 (Ukraine 2016) - The glowy tree part always gives me the chills. I recently started to appreciate this more and the story behind the song is very tragic
40. Hard Rock Hallelujah (Finland 2006) - The costumes are 3 edgy 5 me but the song, oh yeah, the song's really great
41. J'aime la vie (Belgium 1986) - What a bop. kind of 80s generic music but I don't care
42. Non ho l'eta (Italy 1964) - The instrumental is pretty, however, since I discovered the lyrics I just...don't like it as much anymore. It's probably my least favorite italian winner if I'm being honest.
43. All kinds of everything (Ireland 1970) - Might have gotten diabetes over how sweet this song is
44. Merci, cherie (Austria 1966) - That bridge is beautiful as heck. underrated
45. What's Another Year (Ireland 1980) - Yeaaah, I like this a bit, feels kind of long at times tbh
46. Take me to your heaven (Sweden 1999) - Tend to overlook this one, I feel like it's not as fun as the other swedish schalgers from the past (Bra vibrationer, Fångad, Waterloo) but gave it a try recently and I sort of...liked it? Sure, not as much as the ones I mentioned earlier but it's solid tbh!
47. Wild Dances (Ukraine 2004) - The live version is very messy tbh, I listen to the studio more
48. Un jour, en enfant (France 1969) - I love how soft her voice is, but ultimately the song transforms into powerful vocals with an epic climax. The thing is that I don't really actively try to listen to this...
49. Stefania (Ukraine 2022) - Epic flute guy is back! Kind of grew off me, maybe if I'll relisten it might go some places up I guess
50. Ein bißchen frieden (Germany 1982) - Please it's so cozy campfire cottagecore aesthetic
Neutral, don't listen that much to them
51. Making your mind up (United Kingdom 1981) - So energetic and silly, 80s trash lolol
52. In your eyes (Ireland 1993) - My favorite out of the 3 back-to-back irish winners
53. Rock n roll kids (Ireland 1994) - One of the legendary irish wins, it's good I guess but not up my alley
54. Amar pelos dois (Portugal 2017) - Reminiscent of those classy 60s chansons which I appreciate, still kind of don't get out of my way to actively listen to this, though
55. I wanna (Latvia 2002) - The first winner that had something more on stage than just dancing. Love the outfit reveal lol
56. Everyway that I can (Turkey 2003) - Trash early 2000s ethnic pop at its finest
57. Satellite (Germany 2010) - ...I kind of used to listen to this at first since I found it quirky and fun, but now, along with some others I kind of forgot about it?
58. Fly on the wings of love (Denmark 2000) - Not exactly my favorite, but it's nice
59. Si la vie est cadeau (Luxembourg 1983) - Feels a bit bland I guess? But it's a good effort
60. Believe (Russia 2008) - Maybe I was influenced about the war, but this really fell down a loooot in my ranking. Epic ice skater guy is great, but I tend to dismiss this one as being a winner for some reason
61. La la la (Spain 1968) - It's repetitive as hell, but at least I like the verses more, right?
62. Tom Pillibi (France 1960) - Her singing can get a bit too high for my ears lmao but it's nice nonetheless
Don't care about them that much, sorry
63. Running scared (Azerbaijan 2011) - It's not bad per se, but I still ask myself how did this win. It lacks substance, any sort of charisma or dynamic between the two
64. Toy (Israel 2018) - I used to haaate this one back in 2018, then it kind of became a meme in my friend group. So I don't really know what to say about this one
65. Everybody (Estonia 2001) - Very funky, but sometimes I forget that this is one of the winners 😂
66. Diva (Israel 1998) - Listen Dana is amazing, but I feel that her song lacks something? She wasn't singing that great either. Don't really find myself listening to it that much so...
67. Dors mon amour (France 1958) - it's very calming, but feels like it drags on for too long I guess?
68. Un premier amour (France 1962) - why is it so repetitive help
69. Why me (Ireland 1992) - it's...too whiny and dramatic for me, sorry, it's the winner that I listened the least so far 😔

Put a song for every letter in your url and tag the amount of people in your url!
Ty @palaugranetes. I went with Belgian-made music! 🇧🇪🇧🇪🇧🇪 (I explained in all our official languages some fun anecdotes. With German I had to use help. Embarrassing for a language hs graduate🫣)
I added 1 song for the number in my name. An S, which would be in my user if not for the my fav number 5!😁
S: Soleil - Roméo Elvis (Wussten Sie, dass er Angeles Bruder ist?) 🇧🇪🇧🇪🇧🇪🇧🇪

Weekend-anthem Come and get your love
“Come and Get Your Love” is een nummer van de Amerikaanse rockband Redbone.

1996 Oslo - Number 5 - Mario Caselli - "Mademoiselle"
youtube
For desktop users, this should take you straight to Mario who was last on of the twelve songs in De gouden zeermeermin. For mobile users, you'll have to skip forward to 1:01:57 to see him. I still don't know why the YouTube timestamps don't work on mobiles. Anyway what you'll see is not Lisa del Bo who's in the thumbnail, but Mario Caselli.
I've said this before and I'll say it again. This is so Belgian. Mademoiselle is in Dutch despite having a French name. It's a driving pop banger with an African subject and musical flourishes. There's a bongo and drum machine-based beat with strings, piano and synths. It builds rapidly from a piano solo, with a hard beat and an African, chanted backing vocal. Best of all is that hit of chorus when the strings come in, the hook is so powerful you're almost relieved that the post-chorus comedown also involves that little piano solo.
Mario stands there, bestride the stage in his preppy lemon yellow tie and braces combo. Somehow he doesn't really fit in this, but there he is belting it out. It managed to finish tenth of the twelve songs in the final. Perhaps because it was on last, perhaps because it followed the hot number of boyband Enzo with 'Mooi' and got overlooked, perhaps because it just looks so awkward on stage with the very white European, legs wide and the traditionally dressed African drummer providing backing. There's a heavily colonial aspect here that was probably not what was intended, but is nevertheless unavoidable looking at the staging.
Still it's a full-on Europop banger that will get your heart racing and your face smiling. I find it irresistible. I'm not sure how well it would have done in Oslo, but I kind of wish it had won the Belgian selection over the other more big name singers.
Mario himself was in New Stars '91, a project of Erik Marijsse, songwriter, presenter, record-label owner and all-around Belgian musical svengali. The New Stars didn't do so well generally, but at least Mario got a chance. He has several singles out around this time that didn't do that well. He also realeased and album and some more singles in the early 2000s that proved to be a final throw of the dice.
Here's a slightly earlier appearance of Mario on the Belgian music show TOTZ with Party Zone singing Het is een nacht, again looking out of place wearing tie and waistcoat in an Europop club anthem with backing dancers wearing considerably less.

What a Fkn beat! Will never forget paul van dyk’s set at privelage ibiza 2019! For an angel is a life changing track for me and to hear it played live was literally an honour. Trance Music Rescues me, Paul van dyk just sets you free. Paul & Plumb’s ‘Music Rescues Me’ is out today through VANDIT Records today. It follows three urbanites drawn together on a day-and-night-long, ultimately preternatural journey across Los Angeles. Set amidst epic, reverb-rich guitars strains and dynamic rhythms, ‘Music Rescues Me’ is a track whose rapturously positive-thinking/feeling chorus is only equalled by its imaginatively stimulating verses. I feel that’s a big part of what keeps it so magical for me and Plumb & Johnny have helped me pay tribute to all that through this release”. It’s both force and a gift and although I’ve been involved with it for a long time, I’ll never completely understand it. Says Paul “music’s ability to conjure imagery, fuel memories, get us through the tougher times and soundtrack the good ones is awe inspiring. Paul’s album opener is a rapture-filled commemoration of music’s remarkable, unending and sometimes even inexplicable capacity to liberate and release. “It took some time, but, says Paul, in ‘Music Rescues Me’, I knew we had the right follow-up for Plumb”. That came following a songwriting session between Paul and Johnny. Beloved by fans from both quarters, the pair stayed in close contact, looking for the right project to resume the partnership on. Paul & Plumb’s shared history reaches back three whole PvD albums, to ‘EVOLUTION’ and ‘I Don’t Deserve You’. ‘Music Rescues Me’s song is co-penned by the lyricist behind latter-day van Dyk anthem ‘Home’, Snow Patrol member and long-time personal friend, Johnny McDaid. It reunites the internationally renowned music producer with collaborators from not one, but two of his best loved releases of recent times.įor the track’s vocal, Paul is joined by Plumb - the singer who rendered 2012’s ‘I Don’t Deserve You’ much of its emotional punch. ‘Music Rescues Me’ is the single trailblazer for Paul van Dyk’s fall-released, ninth studio album of the same name.

Niemand kan my genot meet wanneer ek ʼn sluk chenin vat, of wanneer ek my broerskinders help grimeer nie. Maak dit my minder gelukkig vir daardie rede?
