Those five years are catnip for me. Here's a little scene in the very early days...

Rain splattered the windows and likely was a reason for the small restaurant's few patrons. One group's low murmur couldn’t match the normal lunchtime buzz of the place. The manager himself had cheerfully greeted Cabanela and offered a place for his sodden umbrella, a splash of yellow contrasting the dullness outside. Cabanela had taken a table for two when he was then greeted personally by the chef who would be delighted if he’d be willing to try a new sauce—the opinion of one of their prized regulars would be most welcome—and Cabanela had happily agreed.

The pasta was as fine as ever, and the new sauce turned out excellently. It was another bright spark against the sour day—a spark now being threatened by the encroaching grey edges as his gaze fell on the empty seat opposite him and his fork stilled.

The bastard.

Of course he knew Jowd was stubborn. Hard-headed. A myriad other adjectives he could apply to him right about now. What he hadn’t counted on was, well, any of this. None of this should exist in the first place, but as the universe had grown increasingly rude and wrong, well, this was the hand he was dealt, and he wasn’t supposed to be this much of a damned stone wall.

With an annoyed flourish he twirled more pasta onto his fork. A criminal denying their crime was a possibility you simply had to accept. Stalwartly denying innocence was a whole other kettle of rotten fish. More pasta was stabbed, twirled, eaten. The empty chair was glared at.

Why?

Was that the right question yet? Why was…his thoughts stumbled and he took a steadying drink. Why was Alma killed? Which led back to his initial ‘why’. Why would Jowd claim to have killed her? Obviously, he hadn’t done so. An endless circle…

When a criminal denied their crime there could be more evidence to find and the courts would sort things out. What were you supposed to when the so-called criminal lied about committing the crime and the courts cooperated with him?

Find more evidence of course.

But the truth was, the real truth was he simply hadn’t expected Jowd to lie to him. This should have been a partnership. For Alma and Kamila’s sake if nothing more. So, why was he sitting here alone while that idiot rotted in a jail cell?

He pushed his empty plate aside and looked at the window. Rain still drummed down in the steady way of rain that had no intention of stopping anytime soon. There was no avoiding it, but he still had time to stall it. Maybe cheesecake would provide a revelation where pasta—admittedly delicious pasta; he’d have to make sure to pass on his compliments—failed.

What was he missing? Jowd obviously had a reason, something terrible enough to keep even him at bay. The house had been scoured and he clung to the mess found there, a scorch mark and an absent gun. As to what it all meant: that was a key as elusive as Jowd was stubborn. It was a trail, but where the first steps were he couldn’t say anymore.

The murmur faded as the small group of his fellow diners left. The rain continued its steady march down. The cheesecake provided no answers. Cabanela didn’t know what to do.

But he would find out.

It's the latest game from Myst's creators! ✨and it's a beautiful, beautiful thing. Rather short and rather easy, like a point and click 101, and soooo pretty and fun! If you've got VR, I imagine it must be the bee's knees - even on my Steam Deck I was amazed by every single environment. If you don't have a gaming PC that can shoulder its requirements, reportedly it'll be coming out on PS4 at some point!

Ghost Swap 8 ~ 2021

(Can you believe I drafted this post up, queued it, then posted it and Tumblr decided to REMOVE ALL THE TEXT FROM MY DRAFTED POST.  Thanks for that Tumblr, you’re a treasure.)

Anywho it’s that time of year again!  Summer Ghost Swap time for @fyeahghosttrick where we all draw fabulous artwork for this criminally underrated game based on prompts from fellow fans.  My prompts came from @emeraldfox11 AKA @nebulacloudz who asked for some Kamila and Cat!Sissel begoggled adventures…and for fun I included Amelie and Missile for bonus cuteness :)

I love how this turned out.  It looks like a graphic you’d see on an old video game, the kind of background image with the sky slowly changing colour as the credits scroll past XD. It was fun to imagine the scenario behind this image and putting the girls in season-appropriate outfits.

I imagine Kamila, Sissel and Amelie have been spending the day together studying or playing or building one of Kamlia’s amazing inventions…and more snacks were required!  Considering the size of the bike I imagine their borrowed it from Lynne with the promise they’d take Missile for a run too.

Don’t ask me the logistics of how Kamila can peddle the bike with Amelie and Sissel riding it XD. She’s a tough kid!  Plus Sissel is with them so they’ll be just fine ;)

@emeraldfox11 : Just watched a 'tea theory' video and the fact that kris has mixed feelings about ralsei shown through the fact that kris doesn't get healed very much by ralsei tea... and the fact that when he exits a dark world (going from the closet to the library) is possible for him means he isnt some normal everyday object in the light world, but potentially another person? or only exists in dark worlds? HMM

its also chilling when its almost implied that ralsei KNOWS of the presence of the 'player', most notably when he is conscious of the player's aerial POV (to solve that puzzle in susie's prison in chap 1) and can help us watch cutscenes of Susie by telling us to 'imagine susie' in order to talk to kris alone...... ! there is so much going on

ralsei definitely knows about the user interface, and as the tutorial character, knows a lot more than someone should know, even those who have been exposed to the knight's knowledge.

this is probably a tiny thing, maybe not even relevant, but raslei jumping right off the map during the discussion about spamton neo was kinda... odd. he walked right into a space we couldn't access so susie could talk to kris. and the damage control he seemed to be doing... i can understand why he wouldn't want susie to be aware of the player, since she's already someone who outright denies story beats.

and kris... because we can't know kris beyond what people say about them and some of their actions (which we have no context for most of the time), there could be any number of reasons why kris has mixed feelings about ralsei. the idea that ralsei may be an image of their past (the red horns they used to wear) could be part of the reason, like how he looks like asriel, and how maybe their personalities just might not fit together like kris and susie's do. we don't know kris, and it'll be very hard to know them, from our position.

thank you for the spamton shimejis they reproduce too quickly so i have to thin the herd regularly but i love watching them crawl across my screen :) especially love it when im drawing and he ends up crawling in the way of a tool i need to get to so i just flick him across the screen like an annoying bug. i love them

5. What’s your favorite headcanon you use in fics?

Well, Alma/Jowd/Cabanela being a thing is really headcanon, so that for sure without competition. Also love linking Kamila and Pigeon Man in adopted grandpa--she’s claiming him and that is all. Just in general can’t go wrong with anything that means found family.

7. How much do you like symbolism in your fics?

To be honest I often don’t give it a lot of thought but I enjoy doing so when things come up... at least deliberately. Sometimes there are pleasant surprises too.

11. What’s a fanfic idea you haven’t done yet?

For Trails of Cold Steel IV there’s a certain reunion I don’t want to get into here for spoiler reasons but it was glossed over and needs more dammit. So at some point I want to write a moment for them. There will be hugs. And music.
