2024 Book Review #18 – Montress Volume 3: Haven by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda

I have been reading one volume of this comic a month, in part as a way to force myself to take it a bit slowly and appreciate the issues and volumes as distinct arcs and works in their own right instead of archive binging, and in part because a volume of comic books being more than ~20% of my reading goal for the year feels like cheating. This has accomplished both of those goals splendidly, but it is making it increasingly hard to come up with different ways of talking about the basic premise of the story. So I’m just not going to.

The plot picks up fairly directly where the last plot dropped off – with Maika having escaped the last maratime city-state she’d found refuge in (now wanted fugitive) and settling into the next one. To secure safety for herself and her little crew of misfits (eldritch god-monster her mom bore and raised her to be a host for, adorable fox-child she treats like shit, terrible cat who betrays everyone, improbably hot noble magic assassin whose technically supposed to be murdering her), she’s conscripted by the royal engineer to assist in repairing the ancient magical shield which protected the city during the last war – which, due to her heritage and the aforementioned eldritch god, she might be the only one capable of safely accessing. That (literally) blows up in everyone’s face just about immediately, and the remainder of the arc is spent scrambling to deal.

Dramatically the volume works very well as a self-contained narrative, though a decade of marvel movies have left me kind of incapable of taking a big climax involving an apocalyptic glowing hole in the sky that seriously. Beyond that though, this is definitely a Lore volume, digging deep into the history of the Shaman Empress, her relationship with Zinn, and what the other Montrum are or want. It also, if my memory is right, marks the point where Zinn finishes transitioning from this terrible quasi-unknowable parasite ruining Maika’s life and turning her into a walking atrocity to just, like, Some Guy. They’re a little shit with an improbably amount of flattering amnesia and also murder a bunch of people but like, they’re a character now. They banter with Maika constantly, and also keep fucking up and being wrong about things. Deeply endearing tbh.

This also marks the point where The Doctor and Maika’s paternal family more broadly starts being a lot more plot-relavent which, going to be honest, I’m kind of dreading. Can’t remember any real details but my memories of the whole upcoming arc basically boil down to ‘at least Maika got that badass clockwork prosthetic out of it’.

Kippa and Ren are basically irrelevant to the actual plot this time, which is totally fine because I love them both dearly and would have happily read an entire issue of them going shopping and having a nice day in the market. Kippa, besides being adorable, does actually get some pretty meaty scenes providing the view from the gutter here though – Maika gets scooped up by a scheming vizier engineer as soon as she walks into town, and also hates people, but Kippa is absolutely the sort of person to go wandering through a sprawling refugee camp doing whatever she can to help. Which is both good worldbuilding and characterization and provides some desperately needed grounding to keep the whole story from vanishing entirely into mythic freudian psychodrama.

Speaking of preferring the social and political storytelling – I’m not sure they ever actually matter, but I do love the two bit characters who occasionally get scenes of their desperate heroic spycraft and diplomacy as they try everything they can to prevent another war breaking out. Their little bit in this volume also does a great job illuminating what a broken mess the politics of the Federation is – given the incredibly vague 1930s-East-Asia analogy underlying the story’s geopolitics, I like that the genocidal power about to plunge the world into war is riven with internal contradictions and five minutes away from a coup with the army and navy barely able to stand in the same room without gunfights breaking out).

Anyway yeah, it’s still Monstress. Still good! I probably sound like a broken record saying it at this point, but the character design remains just sublime, even for very thoroughly secondary characters. Speaking of, my favourite one has now shown up!

So, she likes someone that can feel like a friend as well as a love interest. Where the chemistry is natural, she even could be drawn more towards a friends to lovers trope. i’ve had this misana x reader that i was supposed to continue with but never did…but it’s so fucked up. and i mean very fucked up. airing out my thoughts atp.

basically you, the maid, is working for empress mina. she’s got shit ton of concubines but her eyes lay on you and you’re pretty much done for. you just don’t know it yet. but she makes you fall in love with her, even having your first time with mina. when you meet the girls who are also empresses, sana of course the flirt she is, she flirts with you which already sets mina off the wrong way. but sana is just being playful…partially anyway. sana sees how mina doesn’t like this. she can sense something is off with mina already. mina always had this look in her eye that was just deadly as some people would say.

if i remember correctly, my friend and i thought of this a long time ago, but mina had gotten jealous from a man in same ranking as her trying to flirt with you. she didn’t like this one bit. long story short, she kills him, but of course it’s hidden. she has power. but news gets around that the man has become missing and you ask mina if she had seen him last because she was the last person to speak with him. she doesn’t end attempt to hide it because “now i don’t have to worry about anyone taking you from me ever again.” her words. you’re disgusted by her actions and tell her off for it. saying how she’s no fit to be an empress. she committed murder for crying out loud. she only defends herself saying it was for you and her. you yell at her, saying that she does nothing but think about herself, and that she’s undeniably selfish and controlling. that you hate her. this sends mina over the edge and she is seething. she’s no longer the sweet mina you knew.

mina slaps you harshly. the first time she’s ever hit you. she decides to lock you in her dungeon. she says if you hate her, she’ll give you a reason to hate her now. months and months you spent in the dungeon. she’d only come down to give you food and ask that same question: “are you ready to love me, again?”. she asks this because from the way you spoke to her, she’s convinced you’re the one not right in the head. being locked in the dungeon for so long, you’ve truly lost your mind, becoming mute. her brainwashing you into thinking that only she loves and cares for you. the final day when she finally asks that same question, you respond with a yes just wanting to get out of the dark dungeon.

mina’s finally happy! she’s happy that you love her once more and she’s ready to give you everything you deserve…only thing is, no one knew. she ordered everyone in her palace to not utter a single word about what she did you, or else they would meet the same fate as the man she killed months ago. they didn’t utter a single thing. well, except for this one maid who sent a letter off to empress sana who explained the horrible things mina did to me. one night, as mina is helping me get ready for bed, she says “i’m so happy you love me again.” sending you into a breakdown, all while mina only smiles and stays creepily calm. you cling onto mina, now having Stockholm syndrome, you’re ready to be with her forever. not wanting anyone else but her. because only mina can love and protect you. it’s only until minatozaki sana comes to your rescue not ready to give up on you.

A "Perfect" Vacation Ch 39

A Few Moments EARLIER...

The group had returned to the S.S. Wonder so that Jett could explain his plan. "So...Let me get this straight. You want us to get drugged AGAIN." Sana said, almost thinking that Jett had gone drunk with power after getting the collar off "Kinda. Just make it look like you didn't get cured. At least long enough to get Prim to stop chasing us down." Jett explained.

Cal raised an eyebrow "OK, Then what?" He asked "Then, You, Haoyu, Bruce, Skarlett and Maxie will load the cure into the smoke machines that are used when Thea performs, as well as when Prim loads up the drug to be dropped over the mainland." He said. "But how do we buy enough time to get rid of the real drugs?" Leo asked. "That's where Balan and Lance come in. You guys caused havoc on her the first time right?" Jett asked the maestros.

Balan nodded "I will admit, that part was true, We did what had to do." He said. "Although. To be fair, It was VERY satisfying beyond compare." Lance said, a mischievous smile on his face. "Well good. I need you to cause that much chaos again. At least long enough to buy some time, to make it look like you guys inhaled the cure." Jett said. "Well then, you're gonna need a MUCH bigger diversion than that." Mei points out.

Lance's smile gets MUCH bigger. "I think I have just the thing. If a large amount of chaos is what we need to bring..." He said, much to his counterparts misfortune.

Back in the Present...

Thea stepped out on stage as a teleprompter was seen with Prim's speech flashing what to say. "And now for the main event! Please put your hands together for the queen of pop, the empress of music, the one, the only, Thea Bruno!!" Prim hyped up, as the crowd clapped for her. Almost robotically. Thea, who was still frowning stepped out on stage, her face heartbroken.

Prim, who saw Thea's miserable state, hissed at her from offstage, whispering to look more "Attractive to the public." And to "Smile you improper stripper! SMILE!" Thea rolled her eyes as she heard the music play. "I'd like to dedicate this song to my all of my fans out there. Including one of my biggest fans and closest friend: Ka Lā Tropica..." she said in a emotionless voice, making Prim even MORE mad than before. "I'd also like to thank my family, who have stood by me no matter what...including the light of my life, My darling daughter Kaylo..." she said, her voice cracking.

Prim, seeing that Thea was too emotional to sing right, growled. She was doing this on PURPOSE. She should have just drugged her to keep her emotions in check. Thea then opened her mouth to sing, when suddenly, she got loud feedback from the microphone, causing everyone to cover their ears from the loud squeal. The spotlights then suddenly explored, making a shower of sparks rain down on the stage, making Thea duck down to protect herself.

Prim had officially now had enough "WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!" She screeched, stomping on stage and grabbing Thea by her hair...much to her pain. "OW!! I'M NOT DOING ANYTHING!!" "So this is where we can find Lora?" Yuri asked, looking around. "Now I know how Leo and Emma felt when they came to save us…" She wasn't pleased to see the arena was dark, like all Nega Boss arenas were.

"She has to be here somewhere," Sana said. "After all, she was the one that helped Leo and Emma save us. So it's now time for us to return the favor."

"Now the question is; where can Lora be—?" Haoyu was interrupted by the sound of laughter. "That definitely doesn't sound like our friend."

Suddenly, the Nega boss that used to be Lora Jade appeared right in front of the Inhabitant. She was now called Puppet Empress. Cass gasped and hid behind Attilio.

"Lora, it's us!" Cal said. "Your friends! We've come to save you!"

"She can't understand us!" Iben said. "The negativity has taken over completely!"

"But we can't give up!" Eis said. "Lora wouldn't want us to! Let's all work together to save her!"

The twelve Inhabitants quickly grabbed a costume. When Puppet Empress made her first move, so did they.

It was now time to save their friend.

2024 Book Review #45 – Monstress ,Vol. 7: Devourer by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda

I originally read along with Monstress as it came out. This was the volume I fell off during and honestly, having now re-read it, past-me was pretty much entirely justified in doing so. It’s not that the story’s bad or anything, but the pacing has gone from unhurried to positively meandering and the plot has by now been nearly-entirely consumed by ancient prophecies, alien gods, and long-dead geniuses. At least the art still verges on the sublime.

The story takes place in the hidden stronghold of the Dusk Court, full to bursting with the wonders of Ancient technology and kept safe from even the hint of war by some terrible magical barrier. After being betrayed by her (now presumably very ex-)girlfriend, Maika is in a coma and being transported to the lair of the Snake Queen for careful study until the power within her can safely be controlled. Not that things are going according to plan – Maika’s soul remains inconveniently tethered to her body, and everyone from Kippa to the agents of the Blood Court have their own interests in helping her find her way back.

The volume can be split between Maika’s wandering through a dreamscape with Zinn and her myriad of family issues, and (primarily) Kippa, Corin and Tuya trying to navigate the frosty reception they receive in the Dusk Court on the other. With several other smaller side-plots - ~30 pages an issue and 7 issues a volume is just not enough for this broad a story. The Dusk Court as a setting left me rather cool, to a degree I can’t really explain. ‘What if we made the Dawn Court somehow seem good by comparison’ just doesn’t seem that compelling to me, I suppose, and all the mystery and intrigue just felt kind of one-note and transparent.

Seeing Kippa and Ren reunite was amazing though. Love those two. At this point continuing to read at least 50% on the promise of seeing Maika wake up and the gang getting together again. The character works remains very good, when someone gets some real focus.

Speaking of, Tuya! We finally figure out what her deal is. And what it is is basically the most literal possible realization of the story’s favourite theme – she is a clone and a host for the original Baroness, an Ancient who has lived on for centuries in one disposable clone after another, collecting memories and using each body up until the next is old and fit enough to slide into. The most literally suffocating parent, a greedy, all-consuming past trying to use and discard children as they see fit.

Corin has, to support the theme, been retconned from a war orphan to the heir of repressed and repressive aristocrats who seem to accept him mainly because he’s less of a disgrace than his sister. His time this volume is mostly spent discovering that some faction of the Court’s Ancients have been slaughtering every Arcanic refugee they can in order to reclaim little bits of their diluted power. It’s all very focused and pointed, thematically.

Maika’s plotline is much of the same – she spends basically the entire volume getting her face rubbed in how her entire life has been lived according to the designs of her mother or the Shaman-Empress or both. Comic books are not exactly a medium well-suited to long monologues and introspective digressions, but it works here because the art for these dreamscape scenes is absolutely jaw-dropping. Easily deserving of awards just on their own. I want a couple pages as posters.

But yeah, character designs and writing remains good enough to keep me reading.

Double A, Double Trouble

Maloi glared at Stacey as soon she said that, while the other two just laughed at them. Another normal day for their group's bardagan sessions.

"Mom!"

"Hello po Tita!"

Nagmano silang lahat sa nanay ni Aiah na kakadating lang din. She wasn't surprised anymore na kasama ni Aiah ang barkada nya kasi her daughter messaged her while nagba-byahe sila. Aiah's Mom then led them towards a private area, and the girls instantly understood na naka private plane ang susunduin nila ngayon.

Well, the Arceta's were certainly wealthy. It wasn't a suprise na they own a private plane.

"Psst... Ate Aiah!"

"Yes, loi?"

"Sino pala dadating?"

Maloi asked, and the other girls listened to them. Stacey and Sheena shared the same confused look that she and her Mom can't help but laugh softly at their questioning gazes.
