I love comparison photos. Sam Reid is something else.
IWTV fandom, please listen to Em Rusciano and Michael Lucas in Emsolation podcast talking about IWTV, TheNewsreader and Sam Reid as Lestat and Dale Jennings.
And about how lovely Sam is to his fans. The fact that he said this "I really appreciate it. This is why we do what we do."

why do you think Hellen said no to Dales proposal?
I’m glad I waited before answering your question because I’ve listened to the Emsolation podcast with Michael Lucas (the show writer) in which he answered all kinds of questions about season 2, and that was one of them!
(I’m paraphrasing here, it’s been a few days since I listened to it!)
According to Michael, one of the main reasons why Helen rejected Dale’s proposal is because Helen genuinely can’t see herself having that kind of ‘normal’ life, not just with Dale but in general. The fact that it was Dale proposing made it even ‘worse’ because of how…atypical their couple is. Michael said Anna was pretty set on the concept that if Helen had a choice, she wouldn’t be in any relationship at all, that she was with Dale because she genuinely loved him, but it wasn’t something she felt ‘fit’ her, so Helen basically freaked out at being proposed to.
Because I love spending hours analyzing character’s motivations, fears and limitations, I’ve also thought a lot about this, not just because I’m going to be writing about it 😅 While I absolutely loved hearing Michael’s explanation and obviously believes it to be true since, duh, he literally wrote those characters, I think it’s even more complicated than Helen ‘simply’ not wanting to get married.
To me, from what we’ve seen in season 2, between the hotel scene in 2x01 with Helen’s reaction to learning Gerry had propositioned Dale, and the return of Tim in 2x04 reminding her of what’s happened before, she still had a lot of insecurities regarding Dale’s sexuality. The way I see it, even though I’m sure she believes it when Dale says he loves her and that he’s not just a closeted gay man trying to convince himself he’s INTO WOMEN, I’m sure it’s still one of her fears, that Dale is basically hiding with her, even unconsciously. And that to Dale, proposing to her and making her his wife is another way to PROVE THAT HE’S LIKE EVERY OTHER MAN.
Which is what was actually happening, in my opinion?? Even if I one hundred percent believe Dale is bisexual and that he absolutely loves Helen, he’s clearly not comfortable with that bi side of himself, in great part because he lives in a world that doesn’t accept people like him, and he’s been traumatized as a teen for having feelings for another boy—not to mention how his mum clearly doesn’t support *not being straight*. I highly recommend listening to Sam Reid talking about Dale in the official podcast for ep 2x06, he explains this so much better than me right now haha.
Basically Dale is trying to mold himself into what he believes a REAL MAN should be. So yeah, like he told Garry in 2x03, ‘of course’ he wants to get married (“Doesn’t everyone?”), because if he marries a woman, he’s CLEARLY NOT HAVING GAY THOUGHTS.
What I’m trying to say is that I think Helen is very much aware of that on some level. Of the fact that her sweet bi babygirl Dale is desperate for STRAIGHT VALIDATION, and that she might have been afraid it would just blow up in her face one day when Dale realized he actually did need “more” than what she could give him as a woman.
I’m not even going to delve into Helen’s insecurities about herself as a ‘fucking disaster’, because I could write a 40-pages long essay about her to be honest, but hopefully you get the idea. These characters are complex and very messy, and I think they broke apart because they weren’t communicating properly, which is often why people break apart. Dale never *asked* Helen if she was actually interested in marriage, even after his shitty first proposal. If they had talked about it properly, I think a lot of this would have been avoided.

We are but a moment away, Newsreader fans! 🎉🎉🎉
It was announced in the most recent Emsolation podcast episode (3/08/2023) - well, cryptically hinted at by a do-si-doeing Michael Lucas and Em Rusciano - that by the time the next episode of the podcast goes to air next Thursday, we will have received a sizeable press release concerning all things Season Two including surprises that we couldn't have anticipated and most importantly, dates! This will mean that in the first half of THIS WEEK, we're more than likely getting our answer!
To say I'm excited and jittering like mad is an understatement. This is all I've wanted for almost two years now. Watching the fandom grow and the show succeed within those two years has been a joy, and I can't wait to follow through on my commitment to the show and all things Newsreader this season. I hope you're all excited and ready to join me! Not much longer to go!

Why SMEs can drive air quality improvement post-COVID-19
Freddie Talberg is the founder and CEO of EMSOL, a company that's on a mission to help businesses reduce their transport emissions. He tells us why we should all be looking at the positive side of the COVID-19 lockdown, namely the massive reduction in toxic emissions globally... Amongst the tragedy of this coronavirus pandemic, we have to draw positives where they exist. It will be no consolation to the suffering population of Italy right now, but the sight of Venice’s canals running clear for the first time put into reality how quickly a reduction in human activity can have an impact on pollution. In fact, the effects of nationwide lockdown spread far further than Venice’s iconic waterways. Research suggests a 25% drop in energy usage in China that could see a 1% decline in its carbon emissions by the end of the year.
Pollution reduces globally
In New York, early research into its lockdown measures shows carbon monoxide emissions down 50% on this time last year. As even tighter measures are imposed around the world– we should expect to see an even more dramatic fall in toxic emissions over the coming months. However, we should be careful about the conclusions that can be made from this, after all, air pollution reduction is the result of a social policy intervention that has essentially shut down all economic activity, which isn't sustainable nor good for societal wellbeing. But it is important for us to think about the other side of this pandemic and what type of behaviour we need to see from businesses in the long-term; namely behaviour that balances economic and social wellbeing whilst having a meaningful impact upon pollution levels in our cities.
Changing our attitude towards emissions
Tumblr media
The biggest concern climate researchers currently have is an overwhelming surge in pollutive activity once social distancing measures are lifted. What we could see as the COVID-19 curve flattens, is a steep rise in emissions that compromises any progress made during this isolation period, as industry looks to make up for lost time production time. We therefore must have practical solutions in place that alleviate this possibility. Taking control of emissions is difficult at the best of times and doing so will be among the last things businesses consider when they resume operations once the crisis is over. How to manage emissions post-lockdown There needs to be a way to deliver business growth and ensure a return to social normality while continuing to achieve crucial environmental targets whilst maintaining global health. Technology is one answer as it can be used to help companies track their emissions levels and their sources, enabling them to take action on air quality. However, this is not a fight we can lead alone. The Government has called on manufacturers to turn their attention to producing ventilators and other equipment for frontline health workers – I would call on technology SMEs to help come up with additional environmental improvement solutions, so that we can flatten the inevitable emissions curve that will rise a few months down the line. This will both benefit the expected damage that will be caused by a spike in emissions once the lockdown is lifted, and will also provide tech-enabled SMEs, whose operations may be reduced over the next few months, with a new revenue stream. It may not seem the priority right now, but this pandemic does not change the fact that we are in an ongoing climate crisis, with just 10 years to keep the world from complete disaster. The legacy of COVID-19 This has to be the lasting legacy of COVID-19: not a short-term improvement in air quality, but a long-term attitude shift in how we go about our lives once normality is restored. There needs to be a rebalancing where economic growth can occur, but in a way that helps the health of our environment and our respiratory systems. We have been forced to act in a more environmentally responsible way for now – we need to choose to do this moving forward, and it is SMEs with technologically-driven solutions that can help us to do so. Another thing Michael Lucas brushed on at the Write Night was the casting process for The Newsreader. It is evident that he was very pleased and spoilt for choice in who decided to come aboard the show, and in particular his “fanboying” of our leading lady and man!
Tumblr media
At AWG’s Write Night, Michael Lucas commented that due to COVID bringing Australian performers from around the world back home, and stage actors being out of work, they had an “embarrassment of choices.”
Out of all of The Newsreader’s cast, he is especially obsessed with Anna Torv and Sam Reid, who he has previously described as “beautiful, talented and absolutely unstoppable turbo nerds” on the podcast he is a part of with Em Rusciano (Emsolation); unstoppable turbo nerds who far exceeded his expectations. He initially was a little unsure as to how the very attractive Sam Reid would play such an awkward and nervous nerdy character like Dale authentically, as he had more envisaged Dale to not be as good looking; more like the kind of nerdy young man who may have not been conventionally attractive and needed a makeover, something that Sam Reid definitely did not need. Suffice to say, he need not have wondered how Sam would portray Dale. That uncertainty left Michael quickly.
Parts of Noelene and Dennis’ characters were written to fit Michelle Lim Davidson and Chum Ehelepola, with both actors playing a big role in developing their characters.
Michael Lucas is an Anna Torv and Sam Reid fan, but aren’t all of us who love The Newsreader the same!? I know I am! 😉💖
