I don’t know if this has been talked about before but I just realized that mirabels outfit is primarily teal but, the one thing that always stood out to me is that her shoes didn’t match her outfit like most of the other madrigals did.

Until I realized this was possibly on purpose as look how similar the color of her shoes is to almas outfit. Maybe this was to show how mirabel wanted to be appreciated and seen by alma. The color is a little off but I can’t help but think that was intentional too. Like she wants to make her abuela proud but she was always just a *little* off.

Antonio’s Vest

I posted about this AGES ago, but it was in a reblog, so I’m giving this theory it’s own post. SO Antonio’s non-gift ceremony outfit is this. Adorable of course.

And throughout the entire movie, excluding his white suit for his birthday, that is all that he wears. This pic is from before his ceremony, but even after his outfit doesn’t change. Unlike everyone else in the family, Antonio doesn’t have a motif signaling his gift in his clothing design, just the warm colors signifying his side of the family. Which, of course this makes sense-- he can’t have a motif for his gift on his clothes when he doesn’t have one yet.

BUT!

In all of the promotional photos released by Disney, as well as toys and other merchandise, have an addition to Antonio’s outfit. This vest.

The only hint of a vest as being apart of his outfit in the movie and thus canon comes in the door carving, where he IS wearing a vest. This vest has animal designs, a clear signal to his gift. 

Now, of course this entire thing is probably that Disney designed him a vest and created the promotional work with the fact that the audience knew going into the movie what Antonio’s gift was (almost all of the trailers include something of either the gift ceremony or him actively talking to the animals). So there was no risk in them giving him a gift motif design like the rest of the family for their purposes of things like merch and promo. BUT! With that came the issue that, in canon they could not possibly justify giving him the animal designed vest unless they wanted to actively spoil the movie experience for those watching it. So they just... didn’t put the vest in the movie, but left it everywhere else.

All of this to say, I have a headcanon that’s canon compliant as to Antonio getting his vest! 

So, I hc the ‘gift motif clothes’ are the presents that the kids parents give their kids for their birthday once they have been gifted. Alma had it done for the triplets and once Isabela got her gift, Julieta carried it on. (I don’t know how clothing design works, but I assume they’d have to like have it done by professionals which leads to a separate hc I have about why gift-less and therefore technically motif-less Mirabel picks up sewing and embroidery but that’s neither here nor there just thought I’d disclaim and apologize if you do know how clothing works and I’m just saying nonsense). 

After Casita fell and the gifts were gone, Pepa had no reason to get him a special ‘gift motif accessory’ and didn’t want to reopen that wound of him having a gift for like a day only to lose it. Once the gifts come back, on his door carving (and the front door carving) he has this vest. So designs on a vest it is! (as opposed to say a ruana/poncho like Camilo and Bruno). And a late birthday present for Antonio once the gifts return!

✨Alora Luna✨

🩵Old vs New💙 Design

🩵I finally got to draw the old beloved design🥹

🩵I made a lot of changes with Alora Luna's design. I simplified her to make her characteristics a bit more realistic. The old design kind of focused more into aesthetics and she was just overall confusing cause there's too many things going on with her from her clothes, traits, skills, and even with her backstory. I love the new design better because it's more focused on the narrative and I did my best to make her a bit more realistic. I'll make a post of her new official design soon (I already made the drawing but it needed some tweaks).

💙 Basically her new description is that she's intelligent, meticulous, and very perceptive or observant. She's big on academics but she secretly has a passion for creative writing. Her dad owns a restaurant in the city (the year is 1950s), where she gladly helps him along with her 3 brothers.

💙✨Her new design is flexible. She can both be a part of the Encanto universe, but she can also stand on her own with her own story.✨

💙 The changes on her appearance by the way is that I pushed the contrast between her and Camilo.

Yet even without Camilo, she can still stand on her own cause I loved her new design the way it is and it's staying that way. The wardrobe will maybe have a few variations.

All of the grandkids designs in caged souls au!!

First of Isabela, as you can see, she looks a lot like Alma and that is because Pedro forces her to look like her. Every morning he checks her outfit and if it’s just a little off he makes sure that she fixes it. Isabela doesn’t enjoy having her hair in braids the whole time (it also causes a lot hair loss + stress. Which makes her worried.) She doesn’t have a problem with her outfit, maybe the colors but besides that it’s comfortable to say the least. The bracelets on her arms are weight bracelets, Pedro makes her wear them so “she wouldn’t lose any strength” and often as punishments her weight can get heavier. (It’s magic connected bracelets that he controls.) It bruises the skin underneath a lot too. The bag is one of her touches, luckily she convinced Pedro to own a bag like that, when she first bought it was just plain till she decorated it later on (also with mirabel).

She often feels very wrong for wearing similar stuff her dead grandmother wore or the exact bow she wore. Something pedro kept after the dead of Alma, he gifted them to her on her 10th birthday. Isabela also doesn’t work out and that’s the reason for not having massive muscles like Luisa, her strength simple just comes from the magic. (But she still is pretty strong without her gift ofc)

Dolores’s outfit is rather more detailed, Pedro wanted her outfit to shine more because of her gift. He also did it on purpose cause he noticed that she was a shy kid so he decided the outfit would draw attention and get the shyness off of her. Dolores likes the outfit but she dislikes the attention it drags, she wears a plain shawl often just so she wouldn’t feel like all eyes are on her, it’s also comfortable. She loves the design of her headband but hates how it always slips or doesn’t keep the hair from her face. The clothing on her waist is the shawl, just plain red, she wears it so she can cover herself any time she wants and because it adds a nice touch at least so that Pedro wouldn’t notice anything.

She wears gloves because she started to fear the touch of people. Some of her family members she still finds normal to touch but she hates the feeling anytime she needs to touch so many people just because of her gift. A baby, a hug, holding someone’s hand, anything. She forgets how her hands look like often, (it changes between the color, shapes, sizes etc. of how many dead people she had been everytime she just stares at her hands without gloves.) so the gloves are very important to her.

Luisa has a simple design, she still likes to work out in this au. She finds it relaxing and it has a special need. Her hair isn’t that long so she puts it in a pony tail. She didn’t know what to do with her outfit because she didn’t have any ideas or a gift. Pedro neither knew so he just decided to make her outfit plain. The colors at the dress, the patterns and the choker was her touch, it was the least she can do. She got the red ribbon from mirabel when she was young and she never wears anything else since then.

She’s the only one with long sleeves because she’s insecure about her muscles, she does like the feeling of being strong but Pedro often scolds her for trying to take Isabela’s place or not looking ladylike, the sleeves are a nice cover for her so she never ever rolls them up.

Camilo is the one that stands out the most of the grandkids, not that he complains!! He doesn’t like his short hair since it tickles his neck and it makes him feel uncomfortable. He always gets jealous of Dolores’s hair styles and length but everytime he just gets over a bit of his ear Pedro makes sure to cut it. His ruana has a lot of details that he had designed with mirabel when they were little. (Now the ruana makes him feel a bit uneasy but the comfort of the warm feeling never felt.) He likes the color, and the length so it’s pretty comfortable. What he does not like though is his scarf and the little things at the end of the ruana. The scarfs feels too tight often on his neck and the little things are very annoying. He does get a lot of attention from his outfit and sometimes he loves it but the other times he finds it annoying.

He also hates his pants, he would never wear short pants (it exposes his skinny body more which he is very insecure about.) not only that but he hates the cold feeling. At least his shoes are okay.

Mirabel too has a detailed outfit, she loves the unique flowers at her dress. Her top is more plain but it still looks nice, her choker is based on Alma’s color. Just like how her bracelets are based on Luisa, Camilo, Antonio, Dolores and how her earrings are based on Isabela. Her glasses were a gift from her father, she loves the little butterfly and flower! (Julieta added it!) her outfit is very comfortable which she loves. She has a ribbon that she got from Dolores on her 5th birthday, it makes her feel better often. Her favorite part of her outfit though is the little sewing she did on her dress. Because that was her first actually project after she finished her whole practices, she couldn’t be more thankful to Isabela. (Isabela did the butterfly as a little add and because it was too difficult for mirabel!)

Antonio has a not so shining outfit which he is thankful for. Pedro has decided to let Antonio decide and design his outfit for a change, which Antonio gladly did. He did everything to make it super comfortable, and then asked mirabel for help with the designs. The headband was dolore’s idea and his shoes were Luisa’s idea. He feels very warm and safe in his clothing mostly because he got to decide the clothing and because his family helped him :D Pedro does start to cut Antonio hair short too time to time which makes Antonio very sad because he loves his big Afro a lot.

I know it’s probably been said before but as an artist I can’t help but praise the character design of encanto

Like look at this whole cast of characters who are all related to eachother and still so distinct! One of my all time favorite facts about this movie is that the family are color coordinated! I love that so much because not only does it make it easier for the audience to tell which character comes from what side of the family but it’s also visually appealing!

Also the fact everyone’s outfit contains symbolism relating to their gift!? genius. and mirabels skirt being her own personal scrapbook where you can see she has everyone’s symbol a clever way to display her genuine pride for her family! Isabelas dress being closer to almas magenta than the other members of julietas family emphasizing shes closer with alma and is seen as her successor! I especially love how after “what else can I do?” She changes her dress colour to a dark blue representing that she’s finally found herself and doesn’t want to be just almas clone! She feels more comfortable with her own family and shows it by representing their color!

Also let’s talk about how pepas family all wear warm hues as shown to be bright, fun and ultimately happy. Which makes a lot of sense considering how pepas gift requires her to be happy all the time to avoid “bad weather”. Her family also wear warm tones to possibly help her maintain this and also because compared to what we see in the movie pepas children have a little less pressure and are considered more fun to be around! Also the fact green and magenta are opposite colors on the color wheel and Bruno and alma have a strained relationship. genius.

I just want to appreciate the character design because I feel like it’s just so creative and has had so much thought and heart put into it <3

I'm not sure if this is a unpopular opinion? I don't believe that isabela hates the pretty stuff It seems like a lot of fanfic writers and stuff make her so extremely opposite to the perfect isabela?

Don't get me wrong I like messy isabela and unhinged isabela but I don't believe that she dislikes roses or the pink and purple and overall princess look she's prob got some issues with getting pushed towards it so heavily

It just weird that's she seems to be often depicted in the fandom of being just so disgusted with her lilac dress and roses and other "soft and pretty" kind of flowers

Alora Luna

Character Concept Art for her Redesign

Alora is a quiet and perceptive person. She is often seen as poised with minimal expression, yet she is sincere and has a rather expressive side that she only shows to those she’s most comfortable with. She sees what others overlook, yet she feels like she’s only seen when needed. She may be patient, but she could be fierce. 

She grew up following her father’s footsteps in academics, music, and culinary arts. She intends to keep making him proud. She basically learned a lot just from following him around. Yet she still has her own interests such as literature (writing plays, songs, stories, and other works of fiction, including non-fiction) and photography.

I made this drawing a couple of months ago, but I never posted it. I was going to post it after that design comparison post I made, but I got preoccupied with other stuff (as usual these days). I already explained my design choices in that comparison post. It would be fun to finally have a post of her brothers' and father's designs, but I think I'll be posting Christmas-themed content after this for now.
