Showgirls is the perfect movie. It’s as hilarious and shocking as it is genuinely enthralling. I’m laughing both at and with it. It’s exactly the right level of homoerotic—a consistent undercurrent of implicit sapphic energy without making any clumsy dated statements. I love how ridiculously kind and forgiving Molly is, it’s the ultimate feminine solidarity wish fulfillment. It’s an extremely sensorial movie, I can practically taste it with all the bright colors and environmental details. The outfits are gorgeous and the 90s camera makes glitter and rhinestones look fucking ethereal. The women are stunning, but most importantly, they’re the only characters whose decisions actually matter. Every male character is a trophy, an obstacle, or some other kind of plot device. It’s all girls and glitter and drama and homoeroticism and it might be one of my favorite movies ever I’m so serious

i actually remember thinking when i was watching as a kid that the pupil jeong jeong was talking about was zuko, only to be Very Surprised when it was actually zhao but it actually makes so much sense that i'm not totally convinced it wasn't intentional on the writers' part. it's a microcosm of zuko trying to be the main antagonist of this book, only for zhao to show him up in that regard, but there's also very much a thematic idea that zhao is who zuko could become if he gives into his father's worldview fully and lets his rage and hate completely overtake him and uses his firebending only for destruction. in a way, zhao is who iroh is trying to prevent zuko from becoming. and the thing is, though zuko obviously still has a loooong way to go, by zhao being the main antagonist of this episode and zuko, in fact, not showing up at all, the episode sends the subtle message that zuko isn't there yet, that there is still hope for him to break away.

I've always been left disappointed by the endings of Pride and Prejudice adaptations because, for me, they never quite capture that satisfied feeling I get each time I finish reading the novel, as I close the book with a contended sigh and imagine Elizabeth and Mr Darcy's happy lives together.

That was until I watched Pride and Prejudice (1967) because this ending is, in my opinion, close to perfection. So, so good. I'll yell it from the rooftops: Run to YouTube and WATCH THIS ADAPTATION IMMEDIATELY!!

Seriously, despite being filmed on a toaster, the ending had me giggling, kicking my feet, twirling my hair etc. and now I need to share the loveliness with all of you.

The wedding takes place off-screen and the next time we see them post-proposal is as they journey back to Pemberley together:

It's so romantic in the carriage. Look how much they're in love🥹!!

And there's a lovely exchange where Elizabeth teases Mr Darcy:

Look at his face!! He just realised that being the object of many jokes is how it's going to be for the rest of his life!

I won't spoil the dialogue but if, like me, you get frustrated that most adaptations omit the lovely post-engagement exchanges between the happy couple, where they discuss just how they ended up in love, then I promise P&P (1967) is going to leave you so satisfied.

But my favourite part is when the carriage stops on the grounds of Pemberley:

Darcy helps Elizabeth down in the sweetest manner and says 'welcome home, Mrs Darcy,'

before they walk off into their happily ever after together as the credits roll...🥺❤️

Just lovely. I cannot gush about it enough. If you have a spare couple of hours, it's definitely well worth a watch. You soon get used to the quality and even the accents, which sound very dated now, though I love how much character it brings to the whole thing to hear people speak in such a manner!

Plus, there is so much energy to this adaptation. It's not a stuffy old period drama by any means. It's wonderfully faithful to the book, well acted and even well-shot, for the time! It also benefits from not having the baggage of other adaptations hanging over it, that perhaps have influenced the interpretations of certain characters and dictated which scenes are included. I highly recommend it, it'll certainly help you look at the novel and characters in a fresh light!

since  we're  talking  about  lavenoor,  let  me  just  say  how  ridiculous  it  is  how  she  demands  permission  before  allowing  anyone  to  write  a  fanfic  based  on  her  idea,  while  showing  zero  interest  whatsoever  in  the  original  source  material.

she  complains  about  having  to  gut  each  of  movie's  plot  lines  because  otherwise  the  fanfic  would  be  too  long  (skill  issue),  but  she  hardly  ever  bothers  to

a).  truly  examine  the  films  she’s  writing  about  in  depth.  instead  of  spending  several  seasons  building  a  special  coffin  out  of  a  delicate  material  for  their  daughter-figure  as  a  parallel  to  when  they  first  discovered  her  napping  on  their  beds,  the  seven  dwarfs  just…  have  a  human-sized  expensive  glass  coffin  laying  around.  as  you  do.

b).  replace  the  content  with  anything  as  interesting  or  worthwhile.  this  leads  to  arcs  like  tyrian’s,  where  the  only  black  love  interest  is  cooped  up  in  his  house  taking  care  of  the  mc  while  she  yaps  his  ear  off  about  his  problems.

(character  foils?  metaphors?  subtle  themes  interwoven  into  the  narrative?  what  are  those!  i,  for  one,  enjoy  it  when  the  author  disregards  my  intelligence  and  instead  requires  the  main  character  to  gaze  directly  into  the  camera  and  declare  unequivocally  what  the  core  problem  is.  i’m  an  idiot  who  doesn't  educate  herself  on  societal  issues  or  read  anything  other  than  light  romance  stories,  and  anyone  who  criticizes  her  handling  of  these  topics  is  simply  lashing  out  because  they  feel  attacked.  yep!)

like,  why  do  you  care  so  much  when  someone  "steals"  your  premise  if  you're  not  going  to  follow  the  plot  and  drastically  alter  each  of  the  main  characters  to  be  darker  in  the  most  uninteresting  way  possible?  some  of  us  actually  like  and  respect  the  source  material  y’know

Just thinking about the soon to be seen goodbye in the rain and the fact that we watch Eddie spraying water on the glass walls of the changing room and the water theming the show likes to use around buddie and how we get water bringing trauma, but then having that trauma bring them even closer together.

The water on the locker room preceded Bucks and Eddies respective trauma spirals through the episode and culminated in them closer together than before with Buck taking on Eddies lease - making that grand gesture and giving Eddie the capacity to make the choice he wants to - to quiet the daemons in his mind. and how the rainy goodbye will ultimately do the same thing - trauma before healing and increased closeness - the trauma of being separated and the healing of coming back together and closer before can only be together as there is nowhere else to go in terms of bringing them closer!

Okay, so upon rewatching Nimona for like the 20th time, I noticed something.

When Nimona turns into the monster, we get an audio montage of all the triggering and hurtful things said to her during the movie. We get Gloreth's line, not the adult voice as in the legend, but the child voice it was actually uttered in. Makes sense, these are from her direct experiences.

But we get what sounds like the adult Gloreth voice too. Speaking a line that wasn't in the movie.

"There is no place for you!"

Nimona went back after the village attacked her and the fire. Maybe multiple times, maybe just the once. But she went back to Gloreth as an adult. And whatever else happened after that, we don't know. But that's not the line of a fighter attacking a monster.

It's the angry rejection of someone asking to be accepted. "Look, we were friends, I'm not angry, I won't hurt anyone, please let me prove it?"

This movie broke my heart multiple times, what's one more?
