The family Channichthyidae are more commonly known as icefish, and they are the only known vertebrates that lack hemoglobin in their blood as adults. As a result their blood is white and their skin appears translucent.

love how hickey slaps a dead dog in front of hodgson then recruits him to Super Mutiny Squad only for him to later go 'dibs armitage & pocock no returns :)' when the hunting parties split up. yes yes john, you'll be very safe I'm sure! I sense zero threat from this hickey fellow, whom I just thought brought me a human corpse to eat. godspeed :D
#like irving can't even say no... he's so fucked. you can see the defeat in his eyes. this is called getting thrown to the wolves johnny boy#terrorposting#john irving#george hodgson#cornelius hickey#shitpost#not really. but kind of? I don't know. 'rewatch thoughts' or something? who knows...#observations#okay that's better. needed a tag for silly points as opposed to meta#on a serious note he must surely feel guilty for this. right? he couldn't have known hickey would do that. but...

tbh one of my fav things about hodgson from a narrative perspective is that being "the smart one" doesn't exempt him from being racist and in fact actively makes him more racist bc he thinks he knows more than everyone and his racism is justified by the things he knows. it really emphasizes how like. baked into society and people that attitude was and the different ways it manifested in different people of all different walks of life
#yup exactly! and this still exists today#in every classist/ableist statement on the intellect or capability of 'working class racists'#class and education do not make you exempt from the prejudices pervading all levels of society#hodgson might have the privilege to dress up his racism or 'evidence' it with his education/status but he's still as racist as the next guy#also the way science has been used to justify racism (despite being seen as an 'educated' field)#anyhow#I have been called slurs with good intentions and inoffensive language with the worst#and I too love how hodgson's airs of 'decency' and 'civility' mask atrociously racist sentiments#breaking class barriers: everyone can be racist#terrorposting#hodge#text

As a person who has been somewhat trapped in a low paying, low prestige, looked-down-on healthcare/servant-adjacent job for almost a decade, and seen all my wonderful coworkers who have no other field they can go into, who are struggling to make ends meet and working this physically taxing job into their 60's because there's no other way out, and many immigrants who cannot afford higher education and are pouring every penny they make into getting their kids into ANY kind of education... I actually don't think modern AU Jopson is a healthcare worker at all if he managed to do better. I think he has a wonderful and beautiful capacity to care for others. But I'd like to think that a good number of us, given the means, are not working in this terrible field for no pay. Being forced to care for those who can afford it to put food on the table doesn't mean it's your calling, even when we're good at it (and I am and I hate this job lol). Office worker Jopson who can afford goth outfits and does DJ sets every weekend is living a much happier and healthier life. "For the love of the job" fields are a trap because we WANT to do the things we love for those we love, not for any asshole who pays us. He's the friend who stepps up when someone gets long-COVID or an adult-onset disability. He can caregive for his friends and family, without the pressure of having to do it perfectly and exactly the way a boss tells him. He's helping modern AU Bridgens with elder care problems so his younger husband doesn't feel too much strain being put into a caregiver role. He dreams about making music full-time, or some other thing that is creatively and personally fulfilling, not about being a nurse or doctor.
#YES!!! great points#underfunding. financial constraints. lack of respect. overworking w/ no support. sacrifice of personal comfort/wellbeing#workplace hierarchies that prioritise bureaucrats/bureaucracy over on-the-ground workers#you can be doing something you deem your purpose in life and The System TM will basically penalise you for it#which is different to what op is saying about it not being your calling. but what I mean is even when it IS it still fucking sucks#anyway yeah let jop clock in and out at the office and dj on weekends#dreaming of making it a fulltime endeavour (I believe in you jop). this is the canon Modern AU jop to me#terrorposting#jopflop hours

@the-golden-vanity Thank you!! I’ve drawn him like twice I think
the thing is, Hickey is a very interesting character and I can’t say I actively hate him but I mostly love him in cute and funny hickeygib scenarios (and either modern or they sailed to Hawaii au)
And I’ve played a bit with the filters, I like how it looks:

sobbing about this, thank you
hello! I chance encountered your lieutenants edit to mitski's 'shame' on tiktok the other day, so I wanted to talk about that.
firstly, what a sickening, gut-wrenching edit (in the best way); truly beautiful. secondly, I enjoy the theme of shame for these characters and all the quotes you used. 'the shame of being seen consumes me', you used for irving specifically (I also like that you gave us a close-up on his fidgety fingers; easily overlooked).
in light of that, I'm curious about your thoughts on these characters' shame. more particularly, how do you characterise their relationships with shame? what do you think is the source of their shame (in each case: for little, hodgson, and irving)? or, what do you think they are most ashamed about? (meta and/or headcanons welcome!).
of course, there's no pressure to respond. I just wanted to share how much I loved your edit (shame is my favourite mitski track, tied with eric) and ask questions if you had more thoughts on the topic :)
That's such a lovely message, thank you for your interest !! I'll try to be concises because I love puting so much thoughts in those kind of edits sksksk
- I'm so glad you liked this Irving part, it's one of my favorite! For him I perceive his shame coming from religion (not surprising), not that he have things to be ashamed of really but I think he is ashamed of "humanity" as a all yk. From this came his need to "set things right" as best as he can. The quote of him I chose : "God sees you", I cut out the "Mr Hickey" for it to be global and not aimed at anyone in particular (does it make sense ??).
The shame of being perceive by other or by God is also tormenting him. He always seems tense or slightly uncomfortable standing in front of people, it looks like he can't really take well eyes on him (really love the job of his actor for this) and so I kinda hc that his own body gives him shame too (he just saw a lot of flaws on it)
- For Hodgson, I think shame hit him before our eyes, he feels/understand it as the journey goes.
From the little we know about him I think he always felt like an outcast in life but was kinda ok with it until he didn’t match anymore what is rank demand of him and so shame came in this harsh understanding of being out of his peer's group. The shame of being the lieutenant Hickey's chose to talk to because he (Hickey) saw that "weakness" in him??
His shame is in pair with guilt : I bet he wears painfully the guilt of putting Hickey in Irving's party, and then having to rely on him for surviving.
- In Little's case shame came from failure and his lack of self-worth : he is not rewarded when he succeeded and constantly blamed for every mistakes even when they are not his own, he take the blame anyway. He fail in public, in the job that is his all life. And this shame makes him incapable of acting because it destroys his self-confidence.
He is ashamed of Crozier’s behavior and his own incapacity at helping him after Franklin's death. He's ashamed for falling for Tozer's words during the opening of the armoury. He's ashamed of proposing to leave the sick. He's ashamed of not being able to make his view value.
I feel like it's a never-ending circle for him, he is trap in this shit.
#thanks for answering my ask!#and PLEASE don't apologise for phrasing!! I wouldn't be able to answer this as well as you in my second language#I appreciate the time and effort you put into answering :)#irving being ashamed of humanity itself (and the humanity in himself)?? love that#also love that you hc his body gives him shame! I can see this for him. also yes ronan raferty does great making him look uncomfortable haha#hodgson as outcast and the shame of his 'weakness' showing (enough so for hickey to approach him) is a great point!#little... oh you have him so trapped in a cycle of shame/failure/defeat... how perfect#great stuff :)#also fireworks is great I can see why it's your favourite!#terrorposting#edward little#hodgepodge#jirv#asks
