Light & Shadows - Cute and Spooky Creature Design Part5
Creating the environment:
To start building the environment in Unreal Engine5, I downloaded a free pack of forest foliage from Unreal Market. This came with few pre made trees and plants. I also downloaded a forest ground texture from PolyHaven.

When making the terrain I run into a problem with the displacement map of the texture. Unlike Unreal Engine4 where the displacement was automatic, in Unreal Engine 5 you need to add certain codes because of the new nanite system. To overcome this problem I followed this tutorial on YouTube:

After making a small patch of terrain, I added the foliage, making sure it looks realistic from all the angles if you are positioned in the center, not just in the angle where I would render the shot.
This creates a more cohesive and realistic look. If you would only add foliage to the part that is only seen in the final render, you may break the realistic look of some of the other elements such as fog and lighting.
I also wanted to set the dark atmosphere I imagined for the render. Creating the lighting of a night scene is a little more complicated than rendering bright light. As the main assignment was lighting, I researched more in depth how light functions in cinematography (real world), as well as in Unreal (digital).
One youtuber that I found most useful is William Faucher. In his videos he perfectly explains the technical steps in how to prepare the environment , but also the theory behind how lighting works.
I followed two of his tutorials and applied his steps and theory to my own environment, making the necessary adjustments:

Following the tutorials, I went through the steps of adding sky light, volumetric fog, atmosphere and other elements, in order to achieve the desired result. I also tested different camera angles, and light positioning, as to get interesting effects like ray lights and the dense fog for the eerie sensation.

Although it is a prototype stage, the reaction system has been completed. Now you can control interrupts according to priority such as death, hit, down, paralysis. I'm going to focus on debugging tomorrow, as the minor bugs remain.
