you're staying at your posh great-aunt's country house. in the guest bathroom there is an expensive floral soap bar that is mostly for decoration and that has been there probably for over a decade at this point, but you can't find anything else to wash your hands with so you awkwardly lather it up before drying them on an embroidered towel that feels similarly decorative rather than functional. this experience smells like jo malone english pear and freesia.

listen, i wanted to love this. i'm on the lookout for a fresh springtime fragrance. juicy pear scents are delicious, freesias are some of my favourite flowers, and i don't like labelling perfumes as 'old lady-ish'. but this scent is very floral, the rose chimes in and not in an elegant manner, and it's a bit of a screechy, soapy, outdated mess in my opinion. the sweetish amber-musk-patchouli base is generic as they come, but anyway the longevity of this is so weak it doesn't matter.

if you want a soapy floral, lazy sunday morning by replica is reminiscent of this but more modern and pleasant in my opinion, and ever so slightly more affordable (128€ ish / 100 ml versus jo malone's 132€ / 100 ml). also by replica, springtime in the park features similar notes to english pear & freesia, though i like it less than lazy sunday morning. another soapy floral that pulls off a lovely majestic aura is moscow by bpal, though the specific floral and fruity notes differ.

more worldbuilding headcanons: while it's ours flipped, i think the distinctive seasons on paradis makes it seem further north because the actual opposite longitude to madagascar is saudi arabia. paradis' relationship the continent of marley reads a lot like the british isles to mainland eurasia to me. we see from maps in s4 that marley's empire is huge, so it probably includes tropical colonies (my elaborate mr leonhart headcanons)

YES OMG… okay I’ve thought so so much about perfume wrt Bedelia, both because her canonical perfume bottle is such an iconic presence

Taking it in a Watsonian sense that she decants a commercially available scent into a bottle she likes more for whatever reason, she might like something from Profumum Roma, maybe Alba or Olibanum. Xerjoff Zefiro??? (also realizing I recced a Profumum Roma scent for Will, lmao... be that as it may)

I associate her with iris and with more low key gourmand notes, nutty or spiced notes, rather than perfumes meant to evoke a specific baked good or anything really sticky-sweet. Powdery, cool, and dry. I don’t think she’s got any insecurities about wanting to look or be perceived as particularly youthful (her dress sense and attitude seem like they’re going to stay just as they are for the foreseeable future, just as polished and manicured as they are now) so she’s more amenable to weird powdery scentscapes that would repulse some random 22-year-old Scentbird subscriber. The symbolism of her leaving her perfume bottle behind for Hannibal is really intimate but it also suggests to me she’s the kind of person who’s loyal to a single fragrance rather than cycling through multiple depending on her mood. My biggest Bedelia headcanon is that she does so much perfume shopping in Florence. She does a lot of strategic shopping in general as a way of raising a subtle red flag but I didn’t get these unrealistic childhood expectations wrt the Farmaceutica Santa Maria Novella for nothing, tyvm.

s1/s2 Alana... I could see her having a similar taste in perfume to Clarice, something that's got less-direct nostalgic associations for her but that's congruent with a presentation of herself as professional and put-together and performing a particular kind of femininity; it's personal to her but it's also something in her toolbelt for moving through her professional setting as a woman. Very different actual perfume choice, than Clarice and her mom though, like a Jo Malone perfume lingering on her clothes. (English Pear & Freesia or Wild Bluebell?) In a more emphatic way she might also be a Tom Ford girlie (maybe White Suede?) but I think I just associate Tom Ford perfumes with the era s1/s2 were first airing. 

Beverly, ooo... they're all professional women but Beverly does more hands-on stuff so if she wears perfume it's a thing in her downtime, maybe her leather jacket carries a little ghost of scent with it. This is 100% pepperjacking on my part but I could see her as an indie scents/perfume collecting girlie. RIP Beverly Katz, you would have loved all the weird chemical scentscapes from Xyrena.

Margot is a tough one for me because I've still got a bug up my ass about how she's translated to the show -- book!Margot has a freshly-showered, cleanly sweaty thing going for her and if I was going to personal shop her a perfume I would get her something really summery and citrus-y and herbal, but show!Margot has a real Old Hollywood archfemme thing going for her. I feel like any perfume she wears is going to be pretty old-school and not something especially soft or welcoming. She's a hardboiled horse girlie so maybe something leathery like Robert Piguet Bandit???

Greta hated that she had missed Valentine's Day because of work. Somewhere in early in the month, an old friend from Europe who had been back in the US just like Greta had phoned her to beg Greta for help. She'd opened a new restaurant in New York and the sous-chef was not handling the pressure of the restaurant's impending success. Greta understood the guts it took to work in a fine cuisine restaurant. She'd done it for over a decade in the best establishments in Europe. She worked with Michelin star chefs as well as home cooks turned successful restaurant owners. Le Cordon Bleu had trained Greta to always be ready for everything—and so she was.

But of course that sometimes got in the way of her own life. She had the restaurant she was building from scratch, she had the wedding she was planning, she had her newfound and recent friendship with her younger sister (who she has never had the chance to see grow up when she was out becoming the best chef in the world), and balancing things out was difficult. But she did go assist her old friend in New York, where she spent a little over a week training the sous-chef as best as she could in that short time. She couldn't—and didn't want to—stay any longer than that.

She was lucky Lake had always been so supportive of her work, but Greta knew it was a bummer they weren't together. They had facetimed, Greta had encouraged her to go to the auction event from the town because it would be fun, she had sent Lake flowers and chocolate earlier in the day. But it wasn't just the same. So she planned to make up for it.

Prior to coming back, Greta arranged with Emmy that she would go the Morrison's with Greta's sister for a weekend-long-slumber-party so that Lake and her could have some time for them to celebrate (though Greta was sure they would end up picking up both girls to take the slumber party to their apartment instead on Saturday, she figured they had Friday to be just the two of them.

After dropping her bags at home, she took a quick shower, changed and headed to the farmer's market to grab some fresh ingredients. She had peeked at the fridge and wondered what they had been eating this past week she was away cause it looked empty to her liking. Greta didn't want to go over the top too much, which was always an impossibility when it came to her. But she got enough to cook them a nice romantic dinner that would be paired with good wine and followed by whatever they felt like after it.

Their little dining table was candle lit and she added a few flowers too. The house smelled absolutely delicious—of mouthwatering meal and the soft scent of english pear and freesias from the candles. When Lake arrived home, Greta had changed into a skin tight petroleum blue dress that went all the way to her knees and had a nice view of her cleavage, and she held two glasses of wine.

any thoughts on Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia?

It’s a classic for a reason :) it reads as cool to me, and transparent like glass. The pear is very realistic to me, very juicy-cool-fresh. Objectively, I can see that it’s a pretty scent, but unfortunately it’s one I can’t wear personally. I try again every spring, though, because the concept is chic and professional, yet still delicate and feminine.

Plus, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley listed it as one of her favourite scents because it reminds her of her mother — I hope I’m not mixing it up but I’m 99% certain, because I connected that cologne to that story ever since. I feel like it’s such a perfect summary of that scent. Sophisticated, pretty. “Elegant scent that reminds a top model of her elegant, sophisticated mother” just sums it up perfectly to me.

hello!!!!!!! i actually do have at least one for you luckily…it is veeeeeery different from english pear and freesia which is very lovely but you already have that of course! i am actually a pear lover myself i wish it was a more popular note i think it is so yummy and delectable and versatile. i recently picked up a bottle of la belle by jpg and it is very pear forward! but it is completely dissimilar from english pear and freesia whereas that one is very light and airy and soapy la belle is a much heavier spiced/poached pear sort of fragrance with vanilla. super beautiful and sweet and feminine and heavily leaning towards the gourmand side imo. definitely sample it first cuz it is a bit heavy and syrupy and would definitely be too much for some🙂

also in a similar vein jessica simpson fancy smells like pears and caramel LOL but its very very sweet and gourmand and kindof epitomizes early aughts celebrity fragrances. its really nice though i used to have a bottle that i gave to a coworker. and people will compliment you on it like crazy because it leaves a scent trail like crazy

and if you want something clean and fresh ina slightly more similar vein to jo malone then goutals petit cherie is a very lovely fresh and clean pear as well 💃🏻 perhaps a happy medium between something very soapy like english pear and freesia and something heavy and sweet like la belle or fancy. anyways i hope this helps mwah!
