Who's your favorite star wars character, and why?
(mine's obi-wan)
-🐻
Hi 🐻! (same, i love obi-wan!) I hope you know what you're getting into...
Okay, I know that I've talked a LOT about Echo, but he's actually not my favorite!
GASP WHOA SHOCKER.
He's tied in second with Ahsoka. So my favorite Star Wars character is...
THIS GENIUS BASTARD RIGHT HERE ⬇️
Tumblr media
MITTH'RAW'NURUODO AKA:
THRAWN
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you've come all this way, excellent! Here's the actual essay on why I love Thrawn and why he's such a compelling character.
This is gonna be pretty long, and if you haven't read any of the Timothy Zahn Thrawn books, you're gonna be spoilt.
To put it simply? Thrawn is good at what he does. He's not an incompetent dumbass like we see with many of the Imperial Officers (mainly in Star Wars Rebels and The Empire Strikes Back). He's not a magical space wizard. He's one of the only non-human people we see running the Empire at all.
But here's the really long version.
Thrawn starts out as this really weird guy. And this is Chiss standards. He doesn't use standard military tactics, he's both loved and hated (mostly hated), and people don't really understand him. All they understand is that he wins. He is very, very good at what he does, all because he studies people's art.
Yeah. That's a big one. He understands art like no one else.
We'll get back to that later.
But throughout his pre-Empire life, we keep seeing people who are conspiring to bring him down. All throughout the trilogy, Thrawn: Ascendancy, his own family doesn't want anything to do with him. They plot against him.
And he fucking knows.
Eventually, he gets "exiled."
Now, there's a huge timeskip between the Ascendancy trilogy and the Thrawn trilogy. But we see the Empire discovering this weird blue dude, he speaks a foreign language, but guy understands Sy Bisti.
And so does Eli Vanto.
Long story short, they throw both Thrawn and Eli into the Imperial Military Academy or some shit and then Thrawn slowly becomes Grand Admiral, blah blah blah, I won't spoil the rest of it because its really interesting and go read the fucking books.
But we see, throughout the all the books and even the Rebels series: Thrawn is very, very good at being smart. He outsmarts the Rebels more than once, he lies to the Emperor's fucking face, he sends more than one person to his people in order to protect them from the Empire's wrath.
He's not like the other Imperials, who immediately fire/kill people who fail them. He teaches his subordinates to learn from the mistake. (People probably died but most of the time they didn't)
He uses art to determine people's weaknesses. This...this both confuses and fascinates me, mostly because I can't see what's right in front of me until he points it out. This is the ONE thing that Canon Thrawn keeps from the books Thrawn. If he can't find art, he lets them attack first so that he knows what defense/offense to use against them.
Yes. He has weaknesses. Just like any other character, but his I find particularly funny. Politics. He sucks at dealing with anything political, something that his family used against him. Pretty sure that's what got him "exiled."
TLDR, Thrawn is an amazing character. He's got major flaws, yes, but...god, I can't even decide if he's a good guy or not! He's the hero and the villain. He's a GENIUS. He understands art like no one else, he's a brilliant tactician, ruthless to his enemies and confusing to his allies. (Unless, of course, those allies are Eli, Ar'alani, or Samakro)
And I swear, if I don't see Eli Vanto, the Chiss, or the Rebels being thoroughly confused/concerned about Thrawn in the Ahsoka series I will throw hands and Disney better catch them.

I love Thrawn, and my favourite thing about this character is his habit of studying enemies through their cultural productions, and I love tintinnabulum and the wild obsession with dicks there's been through history in many cultures. I feel like these two concepts should at some point collide in the most psychic-damaging way possible for human ensign Eli Vanto 8) For reference, here's a photo of the real deal~

I’ve been listening to the Thrawn 2017 audiobook with my husband on our way to and from work. We just finished the Dromedar incident and got to the part where Captain Rossi gets all pissed off at Thrawn for saving the Dromedar’s crew instead of the Tibana gas. She suspends him, but then Thrawn razzle-dazzles her with some reverse psychology, getting her to kick Eli off the Blood Crow along with him. For those that don’t remember, the convo goes something like this:
Rossi: “One word out of you, Ensign, and your ass is staying behind on Ansion too.”
Eli: *seethes silently*
Thrawn: “i’M sUrE EnSigN VanTo WiLL bE Of gReAt VaLuE tO yOu On tHe ReMAiNDeR oF yOuR PaTroL.”
Rossi: “On SECOND thought, I can hardly deprive my extra special lieutenant of his aide. Congrats on the extended shore leave, Vanto. Peace, bitches.”
Eli: *surprised pikachu face*
At this point, shaking his head in disbelief, Ricky paused the audiobook. This was the conversation that followed:
Me: “What’s wrong?”
Ricky, exasperated: “Why is Thrawn OBSESSED with Eli?”
Tumblr media
My brain, who’s an unapologetic Thranto shipper: «Where do I even BEGIN? Let me launch into a detailed monologue on how Thrawn and Eli are actually soulmates, only at this point in the story, Eli doesn’t know it yet.»
But in reality, I don’t want to sway his opinion, and I’m really curious about his unadulterated take on the Thrawn trilogy, so all I said was this:
Me: “Why do you think Thrawn is obsessed with him?”
Ricky: “I dunno, because he keeps manipulating his life? First he asked Palpatine to put Eli with him. Then he pulled that shit to get Eli assigned to the Blood Crow instead of the job he wanted. Now he’s getting Eli kicked off the Blood Crow too. Wherever Thrawn goes, he’s making sure Eli comes with him. Seems pretty obsessive to me.”
Me: “Hmm…”
Ricky, thoughfully: “…Is Thrawn in love with Eli or something?”
My brain: «Yes. Definitely.»
Ricky, not waiting for an answer: “Well, my man Eli better watch his back. Thrawn seems like the kind of dude who’s got people chained up in his basement.”
My brain: «Yep. I’ve definitely read that fic before.»
Me: “Lucky for Eli they don’t have basements in space.”
Ricky: “Are they still roommates? He might not actually need a basement…”
My brain: «And they were ROOMMATES!»
So I really enjoyed my husband’s take for several reasons. Firstly, he picked up right away on the fact that Thrawn’s early relationship with Eli was super manipulative. When I first read the book, I think I was wearing Thranto-colored glasses. I only saw the things I wanted to see. Like how Thrawn saw potential in Eli and wanted to cultivate it. Or maybe it was the bonding experience of Thrawn and Eli both being outcasts together, “the Wild Space yokel and the Unknown Regions alien”; they could succeed when all those core-worlders wanted to see them fail. But in reality, even if he did indeed see potential in Eli, Thrawn screwing around with his whole life and career was hella manipulative. Of course I know now that Thrawn wanted to keep him close because there was concern of Eli being a spy or even a Grysk plant. Even though he did indeed come to appreciate Eli’s unique talents over time, that’s not why he kept him close at first. But I was impressed that Ricky immediately called Thrawn’s behavior out as “obsessive,” because…well, it does come off that way.
Secondly, the Thranto shipper in me found it really interesting that Ricky asked me, “Is Thrawn in love with Eli or something?” Even though the love in question is of the manipulative and obsessive variety, I found it interesting that that word crossed his mind. It goes to show that even people who aren’t looking for it, and who aren’t reading between the lines, can pick up on some sort of Thranto vibe while reading (or in our case, listening to) this book. I really can’t wait to hear what he thinks once Eli’s loyalty to Thrawn begins to grow.

Eli's timeline
Wookiepedia is jossing the timelines. They've removed Eli's previously canon birth year of 32BBY.
Thrawn born 59BBY
Eli Vanto born 32BBY
Thrawn joins the Empire 15BBY.
Eli sent to the Ascendancy @ 2BBY
Eli was a cadet about to graduate Myomar and be commissioned as an ensign at 17?!

My Thrawn Commentary #1
Space autism incoming
Backstory: so ages ago my bestie introduced me to Thrawn and encouraged me to read Star Wars: Thrawn by Timothy Zahn. As I was going along, some of the passages made me chuckle, mainly because my brain was just ironically (?or not) shipping Thrawn and Vanto. So by default I was looking for subtext.
Or just evidence that Vanto is Thrawn's little bitch.
Part 2 here

“You’re late.” Your fellow Ensign, Thrawn—also known on occasion as Mitth’raw’nuru’odo—seems to have no clear emotion in his voice as you slip into the room. He may very well be a bit annoyed at you, no thanks to you arriving a good thirty minutes after your intended time, and without a single comm in advance, no less. Quite unlike your usual self, unfortunately, no thanks to the unwelcome surprise you had to deal with on your way over. Another unwelcome surprise, at least for today, is this: because of the new rulebook that now runs this…establishment a bit more than the actual top brass does, it’s looking rather likely that this is about to become a major infraction upon your permanent record, if not also a deciding factor against you where all of your future promotions might be concerned. Especially if Thrawn takes it upon himself to rat you out, according to your own local slang. In any case, you’re going to feel just as disappointed as he must be as he’s about to look back at you, if not also somewhat brought down about the possibility of a destroyed relationship. Even if he doesn’t take the moment available to express this—or, for that matter, whether or not he bothers to alert those back home about your ‘adventures’—you would still feel the sting of separation regardless, as he always managed to have this effect on you no matter what. At least, that’s the general thought in your head before he turns his blood-red eyes upon you, and not three seconds later, narrows them in what you can only hope is a look of concern. “And for good reason, I see…the other cadets are acting out again.” As if to shield yourself a second time, your left hand moves instinctively to the bruise beneath your right eye, the most recent ‘lesson’ that Cadet Karvo, a somewhat richer student, decided to teach you on the ways of the Empire. He hasn’t exactly appreciated that a newcomer from the Outer Rim could so much as get admitted to this elite academy, let alone get two commendations by their instructors in almost as many months…so, naturally, he saw fit to remind you of your place somewhere below his own. Somewhere between an assistant and a servant, maybe, though judging by the words he used, he would have loved to see you brought a lot lower. But you, though…perhaps you’re beginning to wonder if your place was always meant to be at this Chiss’ side all along. “That’s the second time this month, isn’t it, Ensign?” This feeling grows just a little as he leaves the safety of his desk to stand before you, the distance between the two of you now curiously shortened. You had originally planned to come here for the first of many study sessions, not just for recalling the general knowledge needed to enter the Imperial Navy, but also to help Thrawn himself practice his Basic. Now that he’s meeting you on your level in three short strides or less, however…preparing for exams now seems to be the least of your worries. “You’re feeling vulnerable and afraid…among other things, to be sure. I can tell from the fluctuations in your pulse and oxygen intake.” There goes his Chiss way of knowing what you yourself don’t always want to acknowledge, possibly even to the point of seeing right through all of your behavioral defenses. How strange that he could always manage to get under your skin, though without wishing to for a great deal of the time you had together. “Yes…er, I mean…” In fact, if you weren’t slowly descending into a state of incoherence, you might just go so far into believing that you found something just a little bit, well…intimidating about this Thrawn. He was well ahead of you in height by at least twelve inches, better gifted in strength and speed, and—in the slang of your hometown—had a mind like a durasteel trap. Hell, by rights, he should have pummeled you at least once in Basic Combat 101, and stolen a few hearts in the process without half trying! “…I don’t know when—or if—they’re gonna be back. Do…do you think they might try again?"

Thrawn and Eli are eating blue noodles.
This one didn't make it to the request poll, but I decided to do it anyway. I only wanted to upload it to my discord only. But then I was persuaded! And seeing the blue noodle in Anodor was again a funny detail 🤭 This was the idea of @cyber-glitch85
She wrote a little dialogue for this:
Thrawn: You are supposed to use the sticks, Eli.
Eli: You know everyone hates it when someone tells them how to eat, right?
Thrawn: Well you're not doing it right, I thought you would want to be made aware.
----
Eli: How did you like the noodles, Thrawn?
Thrawn: …they were alright.
You can join to my discord for more like this, and additional unpublished stuff 🤭 Or be my patron for all of my linearts and much more

Said it before and will say it again: Thrawn needs others to be at his best (yay teamwork!).
Also if you consider Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader as part of that dynamic you basically get the plot of Thrawn Alliances.

all the time we used to have
Thrawn does not feel safe here. It is in a warrior's nature to frequently be in danger, but seldom is it in a place where they are supposed to find safety. And from the stance of his new roommate, Ensign Eli Vanto, he also finds this arrangement equally unsettling.
The young human stands stock still at the entrance, duffle still on his shoulder. "Um," he begins, something he does frequently when he is about to speak. "Do you want the top or bottom bunk?"
"The top," Thrawn answers swiftly. He does not trust this Ensign Vanto and by placing him in the bed above, he will be able to hear any possible attacks.
Ensign Vanto lets out a long breath—something he also does frequently, Thrawn has noted—and sets his duffle atop of the footlocker closest to the ladder. He starts to unpack and Thrawn, following suit, takes the other footlocker. The rest of the night passes in tense silence, neither of them willing to talk or otherwise engage in pleasantries.

Misc. Scenes Pt. 2
This scene takes place about 17 months into Thrawn’s & Eli’s service aboard the Blood Crow.
Thrawn heard the hatch open and footsteps approach. Their gait and weight indicated his visitor was Ensign Vanto. He finished soldering a component to the circuit board laid out in front of him and then set aside the soldering iron just as Vanto reached his worktable.
He leaned against a nearby stack of crates. His shoulders held tension, but it did not appear in his face. His eyes held humor. “You know Sir, if I didn’t know better, I’d say you preferred sleeping down here with your toys.”
“They are not toys.”
Vanto let out an exasperated sigh. “In this context a toy refers to objects you are tinkering with for long periods of time, usually for enjoyment, though with you I don’t know if that applies.”
“I see.”
Vanto pulled out a couple ration bars. “Anyways, you missed first-meal.” He held out one of the ration bars to him. “I also suspect you haven’t slept in two rotations.” He motioned to Thrawn’s eyes. “Your eyes are not as bright as they usually are.”
He smiled inwardly at that observation. The Ensign certainly picked up on things quickly. He took the offered ration bar. “I apologize, Ensign. I did not mean to cause you concern.”
Vanto smiled. “I wouldn’t be much of an aide, Sir, if I didn’t keep track of such things.” The tension in his shoulders still remained and his smile faded soon after; concern crept into his voice. “Was it the nightmares again, Sir?”
Thrawn looked down at the ration bar he held. He nodded. Vanto had been away on shore leave during the two week refueling and resupply break. Thrawn had remained aboard the Blood Crow for the duration and the nightmares had become more difficult to manage.
Vanto made a frustrated sound. “There must be something that will help reduce their frequency, Sir.”
It’ll be better now that you have returned.
“You are not here just out of concern for my well being.” Thrawn changed the subject.
Vanto shifted his posture. An unfamiliar expression crossed his face, a mix of embarrassment and something else.
“Is something wrong, Ensign.”
“No, Sir.” Vanto grinned sheepishly. “It’s just. I don’t know your starday, Sir, and we’ve now served together for close to 2 years.” He put up his hand. “And you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. I know you value your privacy, Sir.” He pulled a small object from his pocket. “I thought…. I thought I could get you something instead for the day you were rescued.”
The day they’d first met.
Heat bloomed in Vanto’s cheeks and spread to the tops of his ears. “I know you appreciate art and there is this old custom on Lysatra….” He held out a small medallion.
Thrawn took the medallion from Vanto’s hand. Their fingers brushing against each other briefly in the movement. Vanto cleared his throat and looked away. The medallion was a small metallic disk engraved with a intricate and finely detailed sun motif on one side, and a stardate on the other.
“It’s called a Lysatran Sun Disk. They are typically given as tokens of appreciation and friendship.” He shuffled his feet. “I had this one made while I was home. There is a local artist that still makes them. Each one is supposed to be unique with subtle differences in the sun design based on the client's input.” He was rambling, rushing his words.
Thrawn looked up at the Ensign. Vanto was watching him, his face guarded; the muscles in his neck were tight, but the heat in his cheeks lessened.
“You did not need to give me any sort of gift, Ensign.”
Vanto’s shoulder’s dropped slightly.
“However, I do appreciate the gesture and I always appreciate learning more about your culture. It sounds like an interesting practice and the craftsmanship of this medallion is quite remarkable.”
A brief scowl appeared on Vanto’s face before disappearing and returning to a more neutral state. He ripped off the wrapper of his ration bar and took a bite. “So, what can you tell me about the artist?”
Thrawn looked back down at the medallion, running his thumb over the delicate lines. “They are very precise in everything they do. No line is ever out of place. Organized. Deeper lines are created by making several shallow cuts so that the tool won't gouge and everything remains uniform. This speaks to someone with patience and years of experience working with the medium and tools.”
Vanto swallowed another bite of the ration bar. “Sounds about right. Her studio was impeccable and incredibly organized. She claimed that she had been making Sun Disks for over 50 years, though few requested them anymore.”
Thrawn frowned. There was no mistaking it. The base of the sun motif had an uncanny similarity to the Mitth emblem.
“Is there a problem, Sir?”
“Tell me Ensign, how did the artist decide upon the final design?”
Vanto’s brows came together as he considered the question. “She asked me questions about the kind of relationship we had, and a few specifics about your personality.”
“Did you mention my species or name?”
Vanto shook his head. “No Sir; she never asked and I never gave that information.”
“I see.”
“Did I do something wrong, Sir?”
Thrawn folded his fingers around the medallion and smiled. “No, Ensign.” He looked up at Vanto. “Thank you for the gift.”
Vanto visibly relaxed. “You’re welcome, Sir. Now, how about we finish our meal and you can catch me up on the progress you’ve made with the latest buzz-droid?”
“Very well.”

>Query: Lysatran Sun Disks > >Lysatran Sun Disks are small disks carved or engraved with a sun motif on one side and a message or date on the reverse side. > >Sun Disks originally symbolized the love and devotion one has for the recipient and their commitment to stand by their side for whatever the future may hold. They were customized to the individual by artists trained in their creation. They were often exchanged between couples in order to express their love and commitment to each other.  > >However, since they have become popular among tourists as tokens of friendship, much of their original meaning no longer applies.
