November is Native American Heritage Month! It's been so encouraging to see how many more YA books featuring Native and Indigenous youth protagonists have been published since I was a teen, but we still have so far to go! Take a second to look through these featured books, and stop by @smithlibrary to check them out some time this month!

Eric gansworth's excellent Memoir in poetry form , Apple : skin to the Core comes out today. Continues his current trajectory of really rich nuance complex and very funny work that is young adult friendly. It's being marketed as young adult but it is all ages in the best sense. Everyone can find wonderful honesty and self-awareness, I love of community and the tension that comes from wrestling against it sometimes I took exactly one creative writing class from professor gansworth 14 or 15 years ago. He's exactly what you want in a teacher. He's going to give you his honest assessment without cruelty for the faults and without embellished praised for its good qualities. At some point I realized that creative writing wasn't my thing, but I still think about that class all the time how exciting and difficult it was and the things I learned not to do - and the permission I gave myself to still keep doing some of them because at the end of the day I'm the author of what I write. I did terribly in the class but I will always cherish I'm a fan of Eric as a teacher, visual artist, prose writing poetry radar and in whatever medium he decides to tackle next. I don't think you would make a distinction between any of those endeavors, and neither do I. It always gives me great joy to engage with his next work and to see the influence he continually has on students across the generations I was at before how much I miss live shows. Is tremendously common for me to see exchange I smile and Nod with Eric in the line right before everyone else let in. We either have equally excellent or equally awful taste. I'm only a few poems into this Epoch of his literary life, but Apple it's my full-throated recommendation. He reads the audiobook himself, which is an extra Delight If you're looking for poetry, if you're also looking for poetry oh, really good poetry to give a young audience to show them what poetry can do, give them this. It's a fantastic exploration of identity and the various contacts that makes that thrilling finding insufficient and the only thing that matters. I finished #ifievergetoutofhere by #ericgansworth last night and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s about an 11 year boy who lives on the Tuscarora Reservation starting school off the Rez for the first time in 1975. It chronicles his troubles in making friends, dealing with bullies, life on the rez, and his serious love for music (mainly the Beatles). Even though at times it is hard to read, it is such a beautiful story of friendship. #readthisbook I also finally got to watch the replay of @vanessabrantleynewton intro to her #illustrationwithcollage class coming soon to @storyteller_academy We got to make papers and then turn them into a lion 🦁 And since the main character in this #book is named Lewis that seems like the perfect name for my lion. #bookstagram #nativeamericanheritagemonth #collage #bookgeek #collageillustration #bookworm #collageillustrator #booknerd #indigenousbooks #bookish #illustration #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookaholic #illustrating #bibliotherapy #arttherapy #collagepapers #collagelion #yabooks #booksaboutmusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CW6jTKbLgzP/?utm_medium=tumblr

📚Thanks to @kidlitexchange #partner for this review copy of Give Me Some Truth by Eric Gainsworth - All opinions are my own📚 It took me a bit longer to read this book. It had a slow "independent film" pace to it that was hard for me to get into. I do not live in an area of the country where I am exposed to the culture of native Americans so I didn't have any experience nor could I relate to the characters. It takes place in the 70's so you get a bit of US history with a focus on the music scene, specifically the Beatles. It's interesting how the author works in his main concepts with songs and impressions from the band. There are some tough subjects of racism, sexual harassment, gender equality, and more in the book. It would be a great book to read, study, and converse with for mature middle school and up. I will admit at times I was uncomfortable reading this book but only because it's hard to acknowledge our past mistakes and realize we still have so much further to go. Realistic fiction is not my go to reads but this one made me open my eyes and for that it's worth reading. ⭐Published May 2018 by @arthuralevinebooksmainwaring - Available on Amazon- https://amzn.to/2ngfWAm ⭐ #kidlitexchange #givemesometruth #ericgansworth #bookstagram #yafiction #youngadult #realisticfiction #nativeamerican #readyourworld #diversebooks #meaningful #bookstoread #knowourhistory #reservation #culturaldiversity #readtolearn

One of my favorite writers who takes me places I’d never ever be able to go if he hadn’t written about them. This is just one of many of his works. He’s also a brilliant painter and poet. Summer reading. And Fall and Spring and Winter too. #ericgansworth https://www.instagram.com/p/CBd0oobDKTc/?igshid=j1ay8vo63si1
