NHA Podcast Series Discusses Cycle the Erie Canal

Erie Canal, NY (September 20) –

This past summer over 600 cyclists of all skill levels and ages participated in a 400-mile journey from Buffalo to Albany as part of the annual Cycle the Erie Canal event, produced by Parks & Trails New York in collaboration with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. Covering between 40 and 60 miles per day, this 8-day journey allowed cyclists to travel across the off-road, multi-use Erie Canalway Trail.

So waaaay back in January, #SpookytheBlythe visited ART247, and we were going to go across the street to show you all the canal, but there was too much freezing rain to walk that far outside with Spooky. Well thanks to the imagination tree, I went across the street and remembered this plan, so I grabbed Pumpkin so she could show you this bit of the canal. - A lot of people walking in this area think that there's a waterfall nearby because of the sounds of rushing water, but actually this is where the local spillway meets the Erie Canal. Fun fact; Pretty much since the building of the first locks through Lockport, Market Street has been a spillway area for excess water. Even today it can flood, but because ART247 was built right overtop 18mile Creek, the water does seem to drain away from the building (further down the street some places have problems if the weather gets bad enough). I wasn't able to get back here with the girls as planned this Spring, and the lock was delayed with opening anyway, but now it's Summer, they raised the lock and the canal is open! Here's what the guard lock looks like open,...It is not any prettier,.... Swipe to look back at the place last February, the world really does change with the seasons! ~ This is a guard lock. It's a lock on the canal, but instead of raising and lowering boats, it controls the water levels each season. In the Winter it's down, sort of acting as a dam, not much water going through, and that helps protect all the other locks and equipment in the city from being wrecked by ice over the Winter. I've never seen the thing move, but check out those giant pulleys on top.
