We don’t talk enough about how when B.J. gets back to California he has to build a relationship with Erin. Sure, she knows him through pictures, but now there’s a living, breathing, person in front of her and he wants to be close to her and she’s three years old and doesn’t understand.

Aaaand spoilers ahead I GUESS but here are some of my fav lines because everyone should at all times remember who the best writer ever is. Anyway.

Trapper studied him. Hawkeye looked away, like he’d been commanded to, like he’d been Orpheus walking back from Hell and not from the showers in the early morning light.

Erin wondered if Hawkeye had ever had a summer like this, or Dad, or Mom, or Margaret: a summer where it felt like everyone was against you, and you couldn’t be bothered to care.

Watching his wife do a cartwheel was like having his whole world flip over, just for a moment. He’d keep realizing he was looking at her the wrong way until it was all over.

“You’re everything to me, and sometimes I get the idea that I could be anyone to you,” BJ said.

“You know he’d look at you like you hung the moon even if you were wearing a trash bag, Pierce,” Margaret said, fiddling with his collar.

“So you think I look like garbage?” he said.

And of course:

“Going to the dance without you would be like if the Beatles did a show without Paul,” Benny said.

In "Period of Adjustment," BJ talks about how much Erin has grown and changed in the time he's been in Korea versus how much Hawkeye's father hasn't, and somewhere in there is a parallel between how different Erin is going to in BJ's eyes when he finally makes it home and how different Hawkeye is going to be in his father's eyes when he finally makes it home.

(Years later, BJ Hunnicutt and Daniel Pierce finally meet and find that they have a lot more to talk about than they'd ever imagined.)

BJ shrugged. He felt every jealous impulse seep out of his body. He was an adult. He’d navigated all sorts of complicated interpersonal relationships. They were cool, modern people, weren’t they? Hawkeye was, at least. He’d always been.

“If you’re inviting your ex, shouldn’t I get to invite mine?” BJ said.

Hawkeye sat down on the bed again. He put his feet up and rubbed at his bad knee.

“Is this some sort of game of chicken, Beej? You’re telling me you’d be just fine with Trapper as my best man?” Hawkeye said.

“Completely fine, the very definition of fine,” BJ said, brightly, lying through his teeth.

I honestly just think it'd be hilarious if BJ and Peg were the kind of parents who let their small children swear, as long as they use the words properly and not in a hurtful way.

Just imagine a four year old Erin Hunnicutt at a MASH family reunion, accidentally falling on her little tush. Potter going into Poppop Mode™️ and coming to check on her, and her going "aw, shit. I fell. " Potter says, so gently, "Now, we don't use words like that." Beej and Peg are looking at each other, trying not to break, while Hawk is absolutely losing his shit.

Thinking about Erin Hunnicutt … how she’s going to grow up to be the coolest person, how she only had one parent during the war and after the war she’ll be raised by two loving parents, plus honourary uncles (Hawkeye, Charles, Klinger, Radar) and aunts (Margaret, Soon Lee, Honoria, Peg’s lady friend if your headcanon leans that way), how she gets to be a teenager during Beatlemania, how she’ll definitely attend all kinds of anti-war and civil rights protests and marches, how she’ll go to college and be absolutely brilliant in whatever field she chooses (maybe medicine like her dad, maybe political science, or environmental law), how she’ll have the courage and conviction to do what’s right no matter how hard it is because she’s been surrounded by good and loving people who have taught her to care about others … Erin Hunnicutt!!!

Can't stop thinking about BJ reading Erin Lord of The Rings (as a follow up to The Hobbit) and just being emotionally destroyed by the subtext.

These wonderful sweet people go somewhere very far away and terrible and then they come home but they can never really return because of the ways that it changed them.
