ok wait so. in the paper girls comics, it starts w mac, kj, and tiff saving erin and mac calling the bullies a slur, they END with mac, erin, and tiff saving kj and mac calling the bullies a more childish/not a slur insult
IN THE SHOW: it starts with mac, erin and tiff saving kj and mac calling the bullies a more childish/not a slur insult….
the show is another reality, branching off of the split that the comic made.
the same central plot and same things about each girl, but a new way of finding them;
kj sees lauren kiss old!kj instead of seeing herself kiss mac
mac hears about her death from dylan instead of the old lady who bought their house
tiff finds out she’s adopted from old!tiff instead of knowing for her whole life
erin is harder, but it loops into clone!erin and comic-old!erin having the same affect that larry and show-old!erin have
not to mention kajemac having a intense rooftop moment in both realities, one of them kissing and one of kj almost coming out and mac telling her abt the cancer

We were so fortunate to talk to Cliff about Paper Girls. He shared his process for illustrating the comics and some behind the scenes information about how the comics became a TV series!

i feel like watching paper girls healed some of my inner child.
seeing mac reunite with her brother, kj discover herself, erin and tiff realizing that life is complicated and doesn’t always end up how we wanted (and that sometimes we dont know what we really want yet)
seeing the pure first love between mac and kj starting to blossom, seeing the friendship between the 4 girls grow, feeling all the emotions that came with it.
this show was a masterpiece and i am fucking devastated.

my hopes/predictions for season 2
So...I was thinking about the possibilities for season 2
(if you haven't read the comics and you don't want spoilers stop reading !!!)
in the comics Kj's realization actually comes from a vision of the future in which she sees herself kissing Mac, so it's like a double realization: she likes girls AND she likes Mac.
But in the show they decided to change that: she finds out she's a lesbian but not that she likes Mac (at least not in the same moment, but deep down I think she already knows)
I personally loved the change, for 2 main reasons:
this way it's a slow burn, beacuse we don't actually know as we're watching when/if they're going to kiss or confess their feelings. AND there's more time to build up their relationship and more time for the audience to fall in love with their dynamic before we know that they're gonna happen (I don't know if that makes sense in english, I'm italian, sorry)
BUT the most important one
Kj gets to see herself being happy. She's terrified, but she knows that she will be happy one day. And I cannot express with words how much that can be important for an lgbtqia+ kid. So that made me really happy.
But now hear me out...what if, in season 2, is Mac the one who gets the vision?
they're switching up a lot of things so I think that might actually happen, and I think it would be perfect.
Just imagine
Mac sees herself kissing Kj in the future, and she starts freaking out.
she wants to talk to Erin about it, because they've become really close in the show so I think she would go to her, because she gives her a sense of safety.
The authors have talked a lot about how both the comics and the show are about the power to make your own choices and change your future if you want to.
The girls are actively trying to change the future to save Mac.
So I think the conversation between Mac and Erin could go something like this:
After the vision, Mac says to Erin that she doesn't want to change the future. Erin is confused, because changing the future is what will save her. Then Mac explains that of course she doesn't want to die, but she doesn't want to change everything about the future either. Because she saw herself kissing Kj and she wants that to happen. Then Erin understands, and Mac asks her how she can actually make that happen.
And then..
I imagine Erin saying to Mac that she might try to be a little nicer to Kj. So Mac does as Erin said, but then Kj is confused, because yes Mac has been nicer to her in the past, but not that nice. So when they finally kiss or confess their feelings, I imagine Kj saying to her that she likes the new "nice version of Mac" but she also really liked the original version.

tiff and erin are super set on finding out abt future self and getting back home, and then there’s mac and kj drinking orange juice, talking about feelings and being gay
