Today looks like... EXCEPT I finished Psych & Soc last night. The last chapter was super annoying! 

Struggling because I feel like I can skip certain chapters, but I’m super paranoid that I will miss one tiny crucial detail that will help me get at least one more question right.

🚨 Rescue Alert 🚨 Lola was picked up by officers in Delaware County when they found her eating Chinese food from a dumpster. DelcoDAWGS picked her up and got her secured overnight with Keystone. She is emaciated, intact, and covered in urine. She has a long road ahead of recovery that DelcoDAWGS is taking charge of. But this beautiful girl needs somewhere to crash while she gets back to her healthy self. We estimate her to be between 1-2 years, currently about 30lbs but healthy weight would be around 50, and she may be deaf (further work up would be necessary to determine, but she’s got bigger things on her plate right now). The ER is a fun place. You get your common cold patients but you also get your really serious cases. It has a little bit of everything and has a lot of bit of crazy too. I loved working in the ER. It was never a dull moment. 5 things that make me happy

1. Food. At a resident dinner last night, 80% of the conversation revolved around places to eat for this cuisine and that cuisine. AYCE KBBQ changed my life and I never looked back.

2. Dogs. Showing dogs, watching dogs, watching videos of dogs, talking about dogs, feeding dogs, walking dogs, getting on the ground and playing with dogs. Actually, this was the other 20% of the dinner conversation. I’m the guy who spends too much time greeting dogs at parties, irrespective of breed.

3. Talking about myself. This is evident in the degree to which I overshare, something my PD had to have a chat with me about after orientation yesterday. It’s probably behind my need for this tumblr, too.

4. Support. As this year proved to me, without my support system of family and friends I’m pretty friable. And my first date with the wife was the first time I felt comfortable opening up and being myself, which is a pretty awkward disposition.

5. Singing. I sing at bars, I sing in the shower, in the car, with the windows down. The instrument that I don’t have to put in checked baggage.

Hello lovelies ♥️ back with some notes. Today is a simplified version for @thestudyingmegan idea of using cheaper stationary. These are my jotted down Critical Medicine for small animals (cats and dogs) I will do a version for horses too! When did you decide you wanted to be a medical professional? I started thinking about it in high school, but didn’t decide for sure until I was in college

What did you do before deciding to go to medical school? Worked as an ED scribe

What area of medicine are you really interested in? Emergency medicine, ultrasound, critical care, LGBTQ health, medical education

Do you plan to/ Do you/ Did you work through medical school? If so what as? I transcribed lectures in years 1 & 2, tutored in year 3, and still haven’t been paid for most of the tutoring I did last year so I’m not working for my school again :)

What’s your most rewarding moment working/ studying in health care? When I’m able to explain something to a patient about their health that they didn’t understand before, which makes it so much more likely that they’ll be able to take bettere care of themselves

What’s your most embarrassing moment working/ studying in health care? When I went to take out my first a-line, of which I was extraordinarily proud, and I said, “This is gonna hurt” - meaning it was going to be emotionally painful for me - and then realized that the patient, who had been unconscious when the line was placed, was now very much awake.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received? Show up early, work hard, have a smile on your face, and don’t complain anywhere within a 5 mile radius of the hospital.

What advice would you give others? You have a hand in building your own community. If you don’t like it, fix it.

Where are you from? The Ozarks

How old are you? 27, which is weird. How did I get here?

Are you an applicant, student or medical professional? Currently a 3rd-year medical student, about halfway through this year!

When did you decide you wanted to be a medical professional? I decided I wanted to go to medical school after approximately 3 months of working in the ER as a scribe. Up to that point, I was really unsure as to what I wanted to do after I graduated. I have a lot of interests outside of life science which made it hard to decide what to do “the rest of my life.”

What did you do before deciding to go to medical school?

My pre-medical school jobs include: 

Barista

Personal Banker

Shot Girl

Volleyball Coach

Scribe

I did a lot. I probably forgot a couple, to be honest. 

What area of medicine are you really interested in? Emergency Medicine with a focus on military and international medicine. I’ve pretty much pulled the trigger on the specialty and already scheduled my first audition rotation. 

Do you plan to/ Do you/ Did you work through medical school? If so what as? Hahahahahahahaahahahahahaha no. 

What’s your most rewarding moment working/ studying in health care? My most rewarding moment so far in healthcare was participating in a Fall Prevention program with a local senior center. I absolutely love working with the elderly and getting to work with them on fall prevention was extremely rewarding. I was assigned a location with a terrible retention late, but my partner and I actually had such growth in our class size throughout the program we ran out of room!

What’s your most embarrassing moment working/ studying in health care?

I cut the wrong size of my suture leaving the needle with only like an inch of suture left on it. The OB was glaring daggers at me. 

Whats the best piece of advice you have ever received?

You are in control in how you react/feel about a situation. This statement made me feel empowered when I encounter trying patients because I feel as though I can control how I react to a situation and not feel angry/upset. 

What advice would you give others?

Find an alcohol you like prior to starting medical school.
