#eruri starter pack

Hey, I discovered SnK a few weeks ago and binge watched the anime. I have never read the manga, I have never been in the fandom, I have never read a fanfic, I am completely new.

Now I just finished watching all the come out episodes so I finally looked around for some blogs to follow and for some meta to read not afraid of spoilers anymore (that I got anyway because I forgot about the manga, ops).

I jumped on the Eruri train immediately because who wouldn’t? Can’t relate. And I was wondering if you have some advice for a fandom newbie.

Do you have some fic recs? Blog recs? Meta I have probably missed? Is it too late and this fandom is dead or joining in still has a point?

Do you recommend me to read the whole manga? Should I at least read the latter chapters set after the last episode of the anime? I’m lost please enlighten me.

I chose you because I’ve seen you’re quite active and eloquent, at least for what I’ve got in a morning of intense tumblr research (I finished the anime a few hours ago).

Hey Anon, welcome to the fandom and congratulations on choosing such a god tier ship for your first foray into fandom.  The good news is that the Eruri fandom is incredibly generous, creative and friendly.  Unsurprisingly it also tends to attract a lot of older fans, which makes it a really chill place to hang out.  So, in answer to your questions...

Do you have some fic recs? 

Lots! I’ve got a fic rec tag on my blog where you’ll find links to all the fandom classics.  There are so many incredible authors in the Eruri fandom, you’re bound to find a whole range of fics that suit your personal taste.

Blog recs?

Meta I have probably missed?

There’s also a fun Q&A session with Isayama here which includes all kinds of additional little details about the story and characters.

Is it too late and this fandom is dead or joining in still has a point?

Four and a half years after Erwin’s death, the Eruri fandom is still alive and kicking.  In fact now is a great time to get on board as the end of the series is drawing more people into the fandom.  Several artists and writers who were active way back in the day, but subsequently moved on, have reappeared and there are new fans joining all the time. 

The fandom on tumblr may be smaller than in its heyday, but there’s a big active Eruri fandom on twitter, including lots of amazing Japanese artists.  I’m @losteruri over on twitter and it you look at the accounts I follow you’ll find lots of Eruri fans and artists. There’s also a *huge* SnK fandom on TikTok, but I leave that to the teens :P

Do you recommend me to read the whole manga?

I can highly recommend reading the whole manga, it’s excellent.  Although the anime sticks very closely to the manga it necessarily has to leave out a lot of character nuance for the sake of brevity, so it’s really worth reading the original material.  

I can also recommend reading the official Attack on Titan Character Encyclopedia which has been translated into several languages.  There’s also the official Answers Fanbook which is only available in Japanese but which has been translated by @fuku-shuu here and @ningen-suki here.  Both books include invaluable information about Erwin and Levi’s special relationship.  

The semi-official Smartpass stories are also fun.  You can find a list of them on @momtaku’s blog here snk smartpass content / snk smartpass stories. 

There are also three versions of A Choice With No Regrets, which tells the story of how Erwin and Levi met and how Levi came to join the Survey Corps.  You can read the manga online here and there’s also a visual novel here, both are excellent. The ACNWR anime looks great but it absolutely butchers Erwin’s character and mangles the ending horribly.  If you do watch it, take it with a pinch of salt.

the eruri starter pack

so my friend asked me for some fic recs, so i figured i’d put together a “starter pack” of recommendations... (most) of these fics are under 50k words, and give a good range of (my favorite) kind of universes.

all these fics are also finished and aren’t really super heavy emotionally. there’s plenty of other fics that hit this criteria, but i’ll try to keep the feels train a little bit on course with these recs.

canonverse

laws of survival (120k) by pasiphile this is the longest one on the list but i think it’s THE staple for post-acwr -> present canon eruri. it’s perfection.

black dog (45k) by stereobone post acwr eruri and how their relationship grows from strictly professional to not so much. beautiful.

home is wherever i’m with you (8.5k) by stereobone erwin invites levi to live with him instead of staying on base. it moves so quietly, and i love it so much. domestic eruris kill me.

aus

i wish the sea would wash you away (then bring you back to me) (15k) by kusuriuri modern au; retired dancer levi and author erwin. old married husbands that have lost the spark, get it rekindled when the young honeymooning couple next to their hotel room reminds them what it’s like to be young and in love.

the sin-eater (42k) by @valisi-clark​ original au; as usual, a beautifully written piece set in a completely original (but similar) universe. the story building is amazing, and the emotions are so raw and real.

salt (30k) by rivai-lution modern (monster) au; funny story about this... i put off reading this for so long because i’m not into monster fics, and now it’s probably in my top five favorite eruri fics ever. merman levi and post-war erwin living on an island having to deal with their trauma.

cardamom (43k) by @lostcauses-noregrets​ modern au; the eruris are archeologists that meet once, fall in love, and then have a long distance relationship. i feel like that’s a shitty description, but it’s such a lovely read.

no groping in aisle 10, please (34k) by @kaguneko modern au; soft husband au that is just a really fun and light read, and a great example of pwp while also tugging really hard at your heart strings.

is it too late to be in eruri fandom now? sobsss but honestly eruri is so hard to not be shipped even when all i do is being sad every time i see 'what if's scenarios on my twt tl but anw im just so happy to have found eruri because they are just so intensely beautiful also can you recommend me the post where i can read the official facts about eruri bcs idk where to start, thank you sososo much <3

Goodness no! It's definitely not too late to start shipping Eruri. Although it's 5 years (😭 ) since Erwin died and 6 months since the manga ended, the fandom is more active than I've seen it for years. Admittedly most of this activity is on twitter, but we've got the Eruri Wedding Zine in the pipeline, emica / @darlingpoppet is doing her Eruri radio with @momtaku guesting on twitter tomorrow, @zorthania is also doing one of her hilarious and inspiring charity gaming streams tomorrow night, @eruriweek is coming in a fortnight, and if that's not enough to keep you occupied, @alemanriq has an interest check open for the multiship SnK Veterans Secret Santa event. So yeah, you certainly haven't missed the boat!

In terms of where to start with canon information, you might want to take a look at my Eruri starter pack, which has links to canon sources, receipts, fic recs, blog recs and other bits and pieces. If you haven't already read the manga I can *highly* recommend doing so, and it's also really worth reading the official supplementary guidebooks as these provide really great insight into Erwin and Levi's characters and relationship. Hi there...Im sure I'm not the only one in agreeing that you are like a galactic hub for almost all Eruri content, and due to your popularity, I was wondering if you know of any other de facto superblogs for Eruri. And, if at all possible, superblogs of Levihan? Im starting to get into the idea of Levi and Hange becoming a thing in their shared traumas after I read the woods scene :( does that make me bad lol

Ooft no, I’m not a super galactic anything!  I’m just very persistent dinosaur that’s been around for a loooong time :} If you're looking for other Eruri blogs to follow I recc’d some recently as part of an Eruri Starter Pack for an anon who was new to the fandom.  I don’t personally multiship, but it certainly doesn’t make you bad!  I really am just a one trick pony, I tend to have one OTP and one OTP only, so I’m not the best person to recommend blogs for other ships.  One Levihan blog I have followed for ages though is @alemanriq, I love their content and their art is adorable ♡
