No Greater Love

Last year, I began writing a story.

It was a story massive in scale and a fair bit ridiculous. Heroes. Villains. Mystery. Designations. Pack. Love. And so much more.

Have you ever written something that felt like you wove parts of your soul into? That was NGL for me.

The problem was, my soul was also damaged after a long, arduous battle. You see, one year ago this month I was violently assaulted. During my healing time, I escaped the dragons in my own life by creating dragons I could control, dragons I could bring beloved characters through to face and struggle and sweat and bleed. In creating space for these characters to feel raw, vulnerable, painful emotions, I was allowing them what I could not at the time allow myself.

The chance to be fiercely loved in all of their fear and imperfections and vulnerability.

This began the obsession. It was great, I could pump out 10k-15k chapters a week... except what no one saw was that I was hardly sleeping, rarely ate, and hydrated myself mainly with shots of esresso. Not highly recommended, by the way. I could not step away from the story... because in writing it, it was keeping my own dragon at bay. It worked...

Until it didn’t.

You know that saying, “let sleeping dragons lay?” Yeah, uh... Dragons don’t sleep forever, mine certainly did not. In fact, it had been lifting its scaled head and was roaring molten fire and blood beneath the surface of my skin—burning me to the core—until one night, I couldn’t take it.

I knew I needed help.

Creating a well loved story is pure bliss. But it was costing me dearly and I had to make a choice. I decided it was time to put away the metaphorical dragons and instead face my own wounding and healing that was long overdue. Should I have deleted the story? Probably not, no. But would I have been able to stay away and actually focus on myself if I didn’t? I’m not sure.

None of this makes the story a bad thing, by the way. It wasn’t in the least—in fact, I attribute it to helping save me in those early months. It is something that is precious and dear to me and I still dream about it.

I’m continuing to work on my healing, continuing to fight my own dragons, and I can confidently say that I am doing so much better.

Do I someday want to pick up No Greater Love again? Of course, I would love to. But given where I’m at, I’m not sure I would be able to at the moment. However, I want to try writing again. Small things, perhaps. Like little veins of gold in dark, cragged rock.

I can’t make any promises, but my hope is that I can write once more.

I did want to say this, and it is very important: to every reader who reached out, to every person who spoke such kindness, you have no idea how I clung to that light in some of the darkest days of my life. Thank you to a community that banded together and showed many of us just how connected we all truly are—by the human soul.

I wish I had the ability to sit down with each of you, take your hand, look you in the eye, and tell you how grateful I am for your life. You matter. You are worth taking care of. You are precious.
