So the phone rang and John said, “You know, I want to do a record but I don’t know if I want to do a record. I have some material, I’ve been writing for a while, writing down here in Bermuda” and of course he had a near-death experience sailing in a storm down there, which I think changed his perspective completely. Yeah, ’79. And so I agreed that I would listen to the stuff. And he said, “Yoko has it” and she handed me an envelope that said, “For Jack’s ears only.” And I took it home and he called me at home the next day and asked, “What do you think?” And my honest opinion was that they were very primitive, a whole bunch of cassettes, there was narration in it, he talked me through it. The songs all began with an explanation, a lot of it funny, and all of them ended with, “What a piece of crap. I’m going to give it to Ringo for his solo album.”

Were these all songs that ended up being on the album?

No, there were still a few more. And there was so much on that tape that I didn’t put on the album. But the Beatles had completed "Real Love" many years later, from that cassette. They built off of that cassette. Actually, I had the original so they built that off of a copy that maybe Yoko had.

Were there any songs from that tape that immediately hit you?

Oh yes, there were so many. So many. There was so much material on that tape. Two cassettes.

Do you still have that tape?

Yes.

Did you ever digitize it?

Yes. But they’ll never be—it’s property of Yoko. Period. It’s her property. So anyway, most of it’s been released.

On the box sets [John Lennon Anthology and John Lennon Signature Box]. Yes, most of those demos have been released... Maybe not with his dialogue, which is quite funny, but he’s singing into a tape machine like a beat box, like a Panasonic from back in the day. He’s singing into it, playing guitar, and then playing that into another, just from the speakers and then singing along with it, like playing percussion or doubling his vocals. It was so primitive. Banging on pots and pans. Very primitive. And my first reaction was, “I don’t think I can beat it, to tell you the truth. It’s so good.” And he’s like, “Oh, no, no, no, that’s not—“ and I said, “John, put this out. It will be sensational. Just put this cassette out. I’m putting myself out of the greatest job I’ve ever had in my life, but I’m just telling you.”

first thing is that i derived my designs for each of the six from the og west end cast because that's when i joined the fandom. so jane's hair is based off how nmp did her hair while in six

and like. i stole the fundamental structure from the left image (fringe that is pulled back into the half-bun goes along the sides, OVER the loose hair behind into bun) and the floof from the second (not so tightly pulled back)

Got the start of scene 4 written. Hopefully gonna be getting to the rest of it later, tho I unfortunately have work now 😔 and then an assignment to do 😔😔😔

I've got 11.6k words written tho, 4.6k of them ideally going towards the chapter 42 anniversary chapter. Which would mean about 7k words done for chapter 41...

January 4 - Yonah goes to look for “a flower” and ends up “causing trouble.” Presumably when she goes to the Lost Shrine

April 5 - NieR writes from Sea Front

April 14 - NieR writes from a city where “people talk with special words”

June 6 - NieR turns 17, hap borth

July 20 - NieR says he is now friends with the King of Facade. Despite his visit there being in April. Maybe he didn’t consider them friends until going back for side quests

August 1 - NieR sends Yonah a letter describing the Aerie, because for some reason he never described it after visiting twice??

November 22 - NieR tells Yonah about the arguing red bag couple

February 14 - Yonah gets a letter from Emil talking about NieR. So this is probably one of if not the last entry before she gets taken

Things of note to me:

1. The first half of the game takes place over a year. I know the game wants to give you a sense of flow and that it was probably much longer than it seemed, but I didn’t expect ~14 months.

2. At the beginning, the only thing NieR does between the Lost Shrine and Sea Front is the first visit to the Aerie. Which means for his first three months with Weiss, they did... basically nothing. Just side quests. Great period for domestic fic. Then, over a period of nine days, he went to Sea Front for the shaman fish, went to the Junk Heap to improve his weapon, went to the Aerie and got Kainé, and then made it to Facade. (Alternatively, that April 5 date is actually for the year before during “The Red and The Black”, which does fit into the time frame he would have been going to Sea Front, but I have doubts that he was writing letters in that time. If it is the year before, then the events from Sea Front to Facade can be much more nicely spread out. I suppose it’s also possible that the April 5 date is during a side quest and Yonah just felt like writing about the ocean that time.)

3. After the first visit to Facade is another long dead period. Assuming he tells Yonah about the red bag couple right after meeting them, the only major thing that happens in the months between April and November is the trip to the Forest of Myth. I’m starting to understand why Weiss keeps griping about the lack of focus.

4. Almost three months from when he tells Yonah about the arguing couple to her entry in February, with only the trip to Emil’s mansion of note. In this time, Yonah has become pen pals with not just Sebastian, but Emil too. The Shadowlord’s rampage was not immediately after the collection of the last Sealed Verse as the game implies. a) I see even better why he lost patience if D&P had a charged up Grimoire Weiss and then just sat on it for weeks. b) I see time for slumber parties with Emil (let me dreaaam).

Obviously there’s some plotholes and things not lining up, but that’s been a known thing. In “The Red and the Black”, Yonah gets the Black Scrawl diagnosis, but in the game she has had symptoms for about a month and doesn’t get the diagnosis until after the Lost Shrine and it seems to be a surprise to NieR.

Whatever, I have an approximate timeline, I’m happy.

is the tonga volcano the biggest one in history?

I’m going to assume that your question is in respect to eruptions in recorded human history (the 2022 eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai is just a very small blip in the grand scale of Earth’s explosive volcanic history). But in short no, this eruption seems to be on a scale similar to the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. Pinatubo’s 1991 eruption is categorized as a VEI 6 and some of the early estimates for Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai are putting it at around a VEI of 5, but this is only an estimate and it’s likely we won’t know true VEI value until a thorough investigation. Though, we do know the initial ash plume rose to 20 km in height and spread up to 260 km in diameter before wind distortions. The area is currently still active, and it is not safe for scientists to be there. Early satellite images show the island (which was formally two smaller islands finally joined together in 2015 by successive eruptions) is pretty much gone.

But back to the VEI for the non-geologists real quick. The VEI is the Volcanic Explosivity Index used by the USGS and relates the volume of products erupted (ash, gasses, pyroclastics, lava), plume height, and some qualitative observations (recordings, satellite imagery, even paintings before modern technology) to assign a number from 0 to 8, whereby the values are logarithmic (like the Richter or Moment Magnitude scale for earthquakes). As a reference, a VEI 0 eruption would be Kīlauea in Hawaii, Mount Saint Helens’ 1980 lateral blast was a VEI 5, whereas a VEI of 8 is a ‘supervolcanic’ eruption like those responsible for the Toba catastrophe (74 ka) and the formation of the Yellowstone caldera (630 ka).

All this isn’t to say the January 15th eruption Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai isn’t large or severe. The explosion could be heard as far away as Alaska (10,000 km away), the pressure wave circled the Earth twice, and triggered tsunami watches and warnings around the Pacific Ocean. A tsunami caused by the pressure wave was even recorded in the Caribbean. But none of these features are unique to this particular eruption, though, and are common when volcanoes (both submarine and those on well-developed islands) erupt, especially those associated with subduction zones around the Ring of Fire. For example, the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa (VEI 6) remains the loudest sound in recorded history and caused tsunamis of up to 46 m that reached as far as South Africa and devastated many island communities.

What will be interesting, in my opinion, is to watch the longer-term climatic effects of this eruption unfold. The 1991 Pinatubo eruption released enough ash and gas to lower Northern Hemisphere temperatures by 0.5–0.6 °C. When Tambora erupted in 1815 (VEI 7) it triggered what is known as “The Year Without Summer” in 1816 (average global temperatures decreased by 0.4 to 0.7 °C). And as we can already see, a good amount of sulfur dioxide gas (the main phase responsible for temperature reductions in previous eruptions) has already been released.

It should be noted that this eruption is the largest we currently have recorded on satellite and thus far is the largest of the 21st century. One reason for the spectacular satellite imagery is Hunga Tonga and Hunga Haʻapai have been the focus of recent study as it represents one of the most complete snapshots of island-building processes (NASA has used the islands as a model for volcanic morphology on Mars too) and now it seems we watch the rebirth and joining of these islands once again over time.

While eruptions like this are always a fascinating and exciting time for geologists, it’s important to recognize the impacts these events have on people. At the time of my writing this response, communications with the people of Tonga are severely limited and may not be intact for another two weeks. We still do not know the real impact of the eruption and the resultant tsunami, but satellite images paint a bleak picture. Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai is still releasing gas and ash and will likely continue to do so for the coming weeks. The ash, which can remain suspended in the air for weeks, is still a threat; and acid rain from sulfur dioxide emissions threatens freshwater supplies and food sources. In the coming days, hopefully, we will learn more about the situation on Tonga and surrounding islands, and learn how to provide sufficient relief after such a devastating eruption.

Testing on Beta and knowing that prepatch for this expansion is less than 2 weeks away is FRIGHTENING like so much stuff is busted.I’ll randomly not be able to use abilities unless i reload the game in the middle of a boss fight. Normal raid testing finally opened and so much is bugged in it. classes are still wildly out of balance, some specs got ghosted by their dev, we’re already being told to wait until the next patch for classes to get fixed....

and to not be a full on doomer: I’ve done zero story/leveling content. I’ve not even stepped into the new zones besides a few dungeons + raid. For all I know the story and zones could be CRUSHING it the same way Shadowlands made me absolutely fall in love with it in 9.0... just so much other basic stuff feels busted and unfinished, I genuinely worry they’re not actually listening to the players and just doing the same old blizzard things
