i had not seen the "durge/astarion is canon!" post until earlier today with that discord screenshot and honestly ... a writer being like "i managed to shove in all this extra content for astarion/dark urge, but then we simply ran out of time for the other characters" is not good, actually. that doesn't mean your ship is the most canon. it means that astarion kept getting extra attention and other companions kept getting neglected. that other companions simply do not have the amount of content astarion has is not a good thing, it is a bad thing.

and like i'm saying this as someone who really loves astarion/durge. it's unplatable to me and that larian writers are sitting in fan discords going "yeah we just didn't do that for other characters but somehow i found the time for this!" is kind of gross to me

There are things I say to my partner in the privacy of our living room when I’m blowing off steam that I would never in my life say to friends or other family members or bosses or work colleagues or fellow community members. I do this not because I’m two-faced but because I’m human. I get frustrated, but I’m also a grownup who realizes that my frustrations and fears in that moment are not the entirety of who I am. I have a right to express them, but I do not have the right to inflict them on the people who would be hurt by them. That’s why those conversations happen in private, in a safe space of trust, where my relationship allows me to show my partner parts of me that aren’t perfect and allows my partner to show me that I don’t have to be perfect in order to deserve to be cared about. I get support through my petty moments until I can be a better person.

This latest attack on Build is a horrifying violation of privacy and trust that leaves me feeling literally nauseated. I once again reiterate that I don’t trust third-hand amateur fan translation to be accurate and contextual, particularly given the provenance of the material, but Build himself is apparently distressed enough by at least some part of the material to make a public apology. So, that being out there, I will say: This was a private matter that should have stayed private, out of respect for everyone involved. Whatever was actually said is nobody’s business except Build’s and now, unfortunately, any named individuals who this was inflicted on and who may have been hurt by it. Which, rest assured, was the intention - to hurt not only Build with this, but also, particularly, Apo and Bible, both of whom Poi has shown her dislike of and ill-will toward in the past. I suspect some people also don’t know how abuse works, and it shows, given that what was purportedly said is a reflection of Poi’s own views back at her.

Whatever the context, I see that purity cancel culture still insists on freezing people in amber in their worst moments - without recognition of any capacity for change or growth - as long as it provides ammunition for a smug, gleeful Particicution. You’re stuck on some unkind things Build supposedly said more than a year ago? Let me tell you what I’ll remember for the rest of my life: The small, broken sound of Build’s voice just a few months ago as he tried to protect Bible and Bible’s career from a sociopath, in a telephone call that he felt he needed to secretly record as evidence of how he was being manipulated and abused.

Meanwhile, I see that swathes of KP fandom continue to be complicit in Poi’s campaign of public and dehumanizing abuse of him, which now includes not only borderline revenge porn, but separating him from his friends and isolating him. This is what abuse looks like. It’s happening in front of your eyes. Do you even care? Do you actually, legitimately care about abuse, or is it just a tool for you to use to win petty shipwars and make yourself feel righteous? Because here it is. Take a good look. This is a textbook play. And if you’re participating in reposting those screenshots of private conversations and mocking Build’s relationships and spreading vituperative language about him and acting like he deserves to have his life and career destroyed, you’re enabling an abuser. You are aiding and abetting her, as the very scenario she threatened him with - in order to maintain access to him, to keep him under control and compliant - continues to get spun out. YOU are a bully and a hypocrite and an abuser, helping to prove that the most dangerous time for an abuse victim is when they leave.

What was the event in 1964, if you can share?

A massive containment failure at Site-11, which left the entire facility destroyed, eradicated the entirety of Task Force Eta-5 (including Agent María Escarra, who I'm relatively sure you're familiar with), and killed almost one-hundred (100) SCP objects of various classes, as well as over one third (1/3) of the on-site staff. The containment failure was caused by a faulty security system that was suggested and put in place by Eight; he was present at the Site during most of the breach and was amongst the few survivors that were later pulled out of the rubble after the main building collapsed. Based on that last part, I assumed that "The Tsarina"'s "Green" simply died during this breach, though I'm not so sure anymore after finding out her staff's name(s).

BnHA Chapter 306: the beginning of the WHAT

Previously on BnHA: Nana and the Gang were all, “hey Deku, we can read your thoughts and feelings so we should already know the answer to this, but for some reason we want to quiz you on whether or not you’d be down to kill Shigaraki Tomura.” Deku was all, “um okay, well tbh, probably not seeing as Saving People has been my entire thing since literally the start of the series.” The Vestiges were all, “yes that makes perfect sense and again we already knew that, but well, good for you buddy and I’m glad we had this talk. basically the minute that Hawks learned about One for All, he realized that anyone connected to Deku (e.g. Inko) would be a target for AFO. AFO wants OFA, meaning AFO wants Deku, and one of the easiest ways to get to Deku would be to target his family

Hawks therefore realized that Inko needed to be placed into protective custody

but the fact that ALL of the hero course students’ families (and is it only the U.A. hero course, or all of the hero course students across the country?) are being given protection tells me that Hawks and co. don’t want to single Deku out as being important. so then it looks like they’re not going to tell everyone about OFA (or at least not the public. which, good). so rather than drawing suspicion by saying “we’ve got to protect everyone connected with this one kid”, they’re making it seem like all the U.A. kids’ families are getting this treatment

but since the heroes are now spread so thin, they can’t just send a protective detail to each and every family, so they’re bringing all of the families to the same place instead to better keep an eye on them

so that’s all well and good, and a very smart move. except that idk how all of this is going to go over with the general public, all of whom are probably feeling unsafe at the moment, and who will probably see this as preferential treatment -- basically just the heroes looking after their own and leaving everyone else to fend for themselves

Chapter 4

INTRODUCTION.

This Book takes its name from the writer, who was cup-bearer to Artaxerxes, (surnamed Longimanus) king of Persia, and was sent by him with a commission to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. It is also called the Second Book of Esdras, because it is a continuation of the history begun by Esdras, of the state of the people of God after their return from captivity. Ch. --- Genebrard believes that the latter wrote the work. But how long must he thus have lived? and how come the lists to vary so much? C. --- We may allow that these variations are owing to the mistakes of transcribers, (1 Esd. ii. 1.) for the writer of both works was certainly inspired. Esdras lived a long time along with Nehemias; (C. xii. 35.) and he may have left memorials, as well as the latter, from which the present work seems to be compiled. H. --- Some additions have been made since the days of Nehemias, articularly C. xii. to v. 26, or at least (C.) the five last of these verses. Capel. Chron. --- The passage cited from the commentaries of Nehemias, (2 Mac. ii. 13.) is not to be found here; which shews that we have not his entire work, but only an abridgment, in which the author has adopted his words, with some few alterations. The fifth chapter seems to be out of its place, and also the dedication of the walls. C. xii. 27. Nehemias was a person in great favour at the court of Persia; and of high birth, probably of the royal family, (Euseb. Isid. Genebrard in Chron.) as most of the ancients believe that all who governed, till the time of the Asmoneans, were of the tribe of Juda. Hence he styles Hanani his brother, (C. i. 2.) and declines entering into the temple. C. vi. 11. His name never occurs among the priests; and though we read 2 Mac. i. 18. 21, jussit sacerdos Nehemias, (T.) the Greek has, "Nehemias order the priests;" iereiV: (C. Huet. D.) and the title of priest sometimes is given to laymen at the head of affairs. H. --- In this character Nehemias appeared, by order of Artaxerxes: and notwithstanding the obstructions of the enemies of Juda, rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, and returned after twelve years to court, making a second visit to his own country, a little before the death of the king, whom he probably survived only one year, dying A. 3580, about thirty years after he had been appointed governor. C. --- In the two first chapters, we behold his solicitude for the welfare of his country, in the ten following his success, and in the last what abuses he corrected. Ver. 2. Multitude. Heb. and Sept. "army." C. --- Silly. Lit. "feeble." H. --- Sacrifice, at the dedication. T. --- Day, in so short a time, as their present vigorous proceedings seem to promise, notwithstanding their feeble condition, and the paucity of their numbers. H. --- But no: we shall have time enough to hinder them, (M.) if the nature of their materials do it not for us. H. --- Raise. Heb. "revive;" a word used for reparations of walls, &c. C. Delrio, adag. 221. --- Sept. "heal." God's providence did not permit the enemy to rage, till the work was greatly advanced; so infidels laugh at the attempts of your priests to restore religion, which nevertheless flourishes. W.

Ver. 3. Leap over. Heb. Sept. &c. "break down." C. --- Bitter sarcasm, which excites the indignation of Nehemias! T.

Ver. 4. Captivity. Since they have not learnt to commiserate others. C.

Ver. 5. Face. Punish the obstinate. T. --- He does not wish that they may continue impenitent. C. --- But, on that supposition, he approves of the divine justice, and foretells what will happen. E. --- Revenge was equally criminal under the old law, as it is at present. But the servants of God express their approbation (C.) of his inscrutable counsels. The imperative in Heb. is often used for the future tense. H. --- Mocked. Prot. "provoked thee...before the builders." Sept. omit most of this and the following verses; having only, "Do not hide thyself, with respect to wickedness." H.

Ver. 6. Thereof, all round; as masons were stationed in different parts, (v. 19.) and not barely on one side of the city. C. --- Tobias alludes to the present lowness of the walls, v. 3. H.

Ver. 8. Together, to the number of 180,000, according to the Jews; who say that they were terrified, at the excommunication pronounced by 300 priests against them, while 300 young men sounded trumpets; and they fled, leaving Nehemias at liberty to continue the work. It is a pity that we have no foundation for this in Scripture. C. See 1 Esd. iv. 3. H. --- The Samaritans durst not openly attack the Jews, who were under the protection of the Persian monarch. But they endeavoured clandestinely to injure them, (T.) and to prepare ambushes. H.

Ver. 10. Juda. Some of the Jews, (M.) who were dispirited at the greatness of the work and the threats of the enemy. --- Burdens. Sept. "of the enemies." Arab. "the Jews were strengthened, there were many porters, but they could not finish the work." C. --- Rubbish to be removed. T.

Ver. 12. Ten times, frequently. M. --- Places, among the Cuthites. --- Whence they. Prot. "ye return unto us, they will be upon you." Heb. the second person is put for the third, which occurs in the Sept. &c. though they refer it to the enemy. "They come up from all places against us." H. --- De Dieu would translate, "return to us," cultivate the friendship of Sanaballat; or "return home," and leave off this work. The sense of the Vulg. is the most easy, and the best. C.

Ver. 13. Place. Heb. adds, "below." --- Round. Heb. "on the hills." H. --- To remove the apparent contradiction, (C.) Prot. supply, "and on the higher places." Sept. "in lurking holes," skepeinoi V.

Ver. 14. Remember. These are the most powerful arguments to encourage an army. H.

Ver. 16. Their. Heb. "my servants," (M.) half of whom only wrought, while the rest stood guard. If we adhere to the Vulg. we must suppose that Nehemias altered his first plan, and ordered almost all to be ready to fight or to labour, as occasion might require, v. 17. C. --- In. "Over, (H.) or behind all the family of Juda," (Vatab.) encouraging the people by word, and sometimes by example. T. M.

I didn’t want to anymore.

The closet door had caved in on me during impact, I couldn’t tell if my vision had gone dark or if I was being smothered to death. There was blood coming out of me somewhere I could feel it. Gashes, bruises, blood, I didn’t want to move. My lips tried to open, they tried to make a sound come out of me, but nothing worked.

What do I do… What could I have done?

Suddenly, I felt something tug at me. Pulling at my heartstrings.

My guide was still with me.

My mind snapped back into place.

My guide! My guide please help me! My thoughts screamed in panic as the fog in my mind began to clear and the smoke in the room thickened.

I began to wiggle under the weight of the door as I tried to pull myself free.

I saw the fire rise in the hull of the ship, and with that I found my voice.

“Please! You told me this was going to happen! I tried to warn them! Why didn’t they listen!? Why won’t you help me!” I screamed as tears ran down my face with the taste of soot gathering around my lips.

And yet, the guide was still there, so quiet amongst the raging flames, but it was there. The path was clear. The future uncertain. And all I could think about was my mommy laying in the crashed ship that was my home, now burning on a planet I didn’t know.

I stood, the guide almost pulling me along by my empty hand as I walked numbly through the smoke filled ship. It took my hand, I would grab an object, and this continued as I shuffled past the bodies of my adoptive scavenger family. I couldn’t make the connection cut off, it was the only thing making me walk, but their pain swelled over my body and it was a silently awful relief when I felt their energy slip through my fingers and meld into the guide’s path. I was being puppeted, and I felt the familiar pressure in my head trying to snap me back to thinking.

I wanted to look back… but there was a new path. I sensed something hiding in the forest. A place I would grow to love. A place I would grow to protect and avenge for the family I couldn’t say the same for.

“Where are we going?” I asked as the guide kept pulling me on.

“The vault is sealed captain. The goods are likely still intact.” A robotic voice calls out from across the derelict transport ship.

The old CIS droid, a BX series commando droid, crouched at one of the many sealed doors, its connector plugged into the one of the ship’s control boards as it scans for the contents of each room. The droid looks over at his organic partners, it’s chassis is worn from age but still durable, with a line of fresh white paint down its face and a white eagle emblazoned on its chest. He beckons the two over.

“Lerti, pass BX-19 the breach charge.” The voice commanded from behind the sealed faceplate of his spacesuit.

“On it captain.” A third voice responded.

The Mandalorian female of the two, clad in red and dull white armor, hands the explosive to the droid, who applies it to the sealed door of the cargo vault before walking off a few feet and hitting the detonator without warning.

The captain and Lerti jump back in surprise, their arms shielding their faceplates.

The charge creates a small explosion, shattering the handle, allowing BX-19 to pull open the vault door and inspect its contents. Five light brown cargo containers, left by the ship’s former occupants as they fled towards the escape pods.

“A little more warning next time BX?” Lerti asks curtly as they approach the broken door.

“Might I remind you that we need to move fast? What we are doing is not legal, and I didn’t realize I needed to be your babysitter.” The droid retorted, obviously mimicking the sarcastic voice of another crew member.

“Okay, we got the goods. Now let’s load them up and get out off this wreck.” The captain ordered through his communications device as he grabbed the first crate, his two companions following suit.

“Cholmon! Are you listening!?” The captain nearly yelled into the comm.

“Ya sorry! Roger that captain.” The pilot, a Mon Calamari, responded over the comm before going back to lazily tracing the edge of the control panel in the cockpit of his Simiyiar-class ship.

Back on the ship, the pilot began struggling to shut everything off.

“Nek! Get up here now!” The pilot yelled over his shoulder.

Thirty-seconds later a relatively short Devaronian sprinted through the door, panting slightly.

“What is it you need Cholmon?” The devilish-looking alien panted.

“Get your red behind down to the engine room, shut down everything!” Cholmon shouted, clearly not in the mood.

“On it, no need for such nastiness.” Nek replied before sprinting out of the room.

“Talk to me Chol, how's it looking up there?” Soron asked as he approached the cargo door.

“I can’t tell captain, they seem to be ignoring us.” Immediately the radar system began to beep rapidly.

“Nevermind, they just deployed TIEs. ETA 3 minutes.” Chol groaned.

“Everyone in now.” Soron commanded as the other two passed by him onto the ship with the goods, the door closing behind them. He quickly took his helmet off, revealing his black furred Shistavanen appearance with glowing yellow eyes.

“Lerti, man the left turret, I’ll get on the right. BX, get to the cockpit and be ready to have Chol use the ion cannon.” He then took off on a dead sprint towards the cannon. Sliding into the seat and putting on the headset he quickly contacted Nek over the backup comms. “Nek power the engine back up, we’ll be cutting this one close. And make sure the ion cannon is prepped.”

“On it boss.” Came the reply.

The sleek ship powered back up, accompanied with a pleased grunt from its pilot, and pulled away from the derelict ship, turning to face the incoming swarm of TIE fighters. Chol turned the Titan to face the swarm, turrets already working to eliminate a few fighters.

“Any day now BX.” He growled, itching to fire the ion cannon.

“Wait for it.” The droid responded.

“They’re closing in, I have to fire now!” The pilot panicked, seeming to forget the cool down time of the cannon and his finger hovering over the trigger. “They’re almost on top of us!”

“Wait.” BX continued, voice never losing its monotone quality. He clenched the back of Chol’s seat, running through a million calculations at once, they couldn’t afford to miss this shot.

The TIEs sped closer.

They started to fire.

“Now!” The droid shouted as the last fighter came into critical range.

The pilot blasted the cannon.

Like watching a lightning show, the chain reaction in the blast disabled most of the TIEs immediately and forced the rest to scatter. By the time the rest of the fighters had regrouped the ship had already escaped to hyperspace. 

Soron sighed as he collapsed into the gunner’s seat, hearing the victory cheers from the Mandalorian across the hall.

Yeah, He sighed mentally, we won. For now…

The captain reached for the comms.

“Alright crew, let’s take a look at this cargo that apparently ‘the Empire doesn’t care about at all.’” Soron said sarcastically as he started for the cargo hold. “I swear when we see Dordo I’m going to ask him for his definition of an easy job.”

@viennainspringtime I am so glad you like Nikola’s dialogue! Writing him is always a bit tricky for me, trying to mimic his natural melodrama without coming off as “cliché villain” or hokey. Nikola and Helen are both characters that are just a bit larger than life, though, so giving them grandiose lines doesn’t seem quite as “off” as it might otherwise. Also that vampire-bites-giving-a-high is just my own vampire headcanon I couldn’t help sneaking in there. I actually came up with it a while back for a different fic that is still not published, but I found I really really liked it (because wouldn’t it make evolutionary sense if your food source liked you feeding from it? and it tosses all sorts of lovely ethical quandaries and gray areas into vampires feeding from humans).

Chapter 13

INTRODUCTION.

Osee, or Hosea, whose name signifies a saviour, was the first in the order of time among those who are commonly called lesser prophets, because their prophecies are short. He prophesied in the kingdom of Israel, (that is, of the ten tribes) about the same time that Isaias prophesied in the kingdom of Juda. Ch. --- The chronological order is not observed in any edition. The Sept. very from the rest. They place the less before the greater prophets, and read some of the names rather differently, as Prot. do also, though they have nothing but novelty to recommend the change. We shall here specify the Prot. names, (H.) in the order in which these prophets appeared: (C.) 1. Hosea, 2. Amos, 3. Jonah, 4. Micah, 5. Nahum, 6. Joel, 7. Zephaniah, 8. Habakkuk, 9. Obadiah, 10. Haggai, 11. Zechariah, 12. Malachi. H. --- It is not known who collected them into one volume. but the book of Ecclesiasticus (xlix. 12.) speaks of the twelve; and 4 Esd. i. 39. specifies them as they are found in the Sept. Osee, Amos, Micheas, Joel, Abdias, Jonas, Nahum, &c. as in the Vulg. C. --- Many other prophets appeared before these, (W.) but Osee is the first of the sixteen whose works are extant. He must have continued his ministry about eighty-five years, and lived above one hundred and ten, if the first verse speaks of him alone. But some take it to regard the whole collection, and may be added by another hand. C. --- The style of Osee is sententious and very hard to be understood, (S. Jer.) as but little is known of the last kings of Israel, in whose dominions he lived, and to whom he chiefly refers, though he speaks sometimes of Juda, &c. C. --- By taking a wife, and other parables, he shews their criminal conduct and chastisment, and foretells their future deliverance and the benefits to be conferred by Christ. We must observe that the prophets often style the kingdom of the two tribes, Juda, Benjamin, Jerusalem, or the house of David; and that of the ten tribes, Ephraim, Joseph, Samaria, Jezrahel, Bethel, or Bethaven; and often Israel or Jacob till after the captivity of these tribes, when the latter titles refer to Juda, who imitated the virtues of Jacob better than the other kingdom. The judgments of God upon Israel for their sins. Christ shall one day redeem them.

[1] When Ephraim spoke, a horror seized Israel: and he sinned in Baal and died.

[2] And now they have sinned more and more: and they have made to themselves a molten thing of their silver as the likeness of idols: the whole is the work of craftsmen: to these that say: Sacrifice men, ye that adore calves.

Commentary:

Ver. 1. Spoke. When Jeroboam proposed to erect the golden calves, people were seized with horror; yet they consented, and soon after Baal and other idols were worshipped. W. --- Ephraim was one of the greatest tribes, and by its example the rest were drawn into idolatry. Achab principally introduced the worship of Baal, which caused God to decree the misery of his people. 3 K. xvi. 31.

Ver. 2. Calves. A cutting reproach! Those who could stoop to adore a calf, might be so blind as to sacrifice men! Heb. "sacrifice, ye men who," &c. Jeroboam issues this edict. C. --- Sept. "immolate men; calves are wanting." H.

Ver. 3. Away. C. vi. 4. --- Chimney, or hole, at the side or top of the room. C. --- Heb. arubba, (H.) means also "a locust," as the Sept. render it, though here it affords no sense.

Ver. 5. Knew: treated thee with kindness, or tried thee. C.

Ver. 6. Pastures: the more they were indulged. H. Deut. xxxii. 15.

Ver. 7. Lioness. Sept. "panther." I will pursue them even in their captivity.

Ver. 8. Whelps; with the greatest fury. 2 K. xvii. 8. --- Inner. Heb. "what encloses the heart;" or, I will break their hard heart. C.

Ver. 9. Own. Evils are brought on by the sins of men, which God does not cause. W. --- Sept. "who will aid to prevent thy perdition, O Israel." H. --- God alone is the author of salvation. He also punishes, (Amos iii. 6.) but for man's amendment in life. W.

Ver. 10. Princes. It was on this pretext that a king was demanded. 1 K. viii. 20. Will any now save you? M.

Ver. 11. King; Saul, Jeroboam, or the Assyrian. --- Away. Osee, (C.) so that you shall have no more kings of Israel. H. --- Sept. alone have, "I took (C.) or had him in," &c. S. Jer.

Ver. 12. Hidden. He thinks to escape. H. --- But I keep it like pieces of silver, bound up in my treasury. S. Jer. C.

Ver. 13. Him. He shall be taken when he least expects it. His fruit shall come forth. Jer. iv. 31. --- Children. He shall have no share in the division of property, or shall not escape when the father shall bring his children to an account. The Chal. &c. insinuate, that the infant affords no help to come forth, as it would if it had sense. C.

Ver. 14. Death. This must be understood of eternal misery, from which the just are preserved. All must die, and many suffered a violent death from the Assyrians. W. --- After denouncing the severest judgments, the prophet promises redress and a sort of resurrection, which was a figure of the real sufferings and rising of Jesus Christ. The apostle applies this text to him, but follows not the Heb. or Sept. 1 Cor. xv. 55. C. --- Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting? Prot. read, O grave, (marg. hell) instead of the latter death. Heb. ehi has been twice placed for aie, I will be instead of where? (H.) as the Gr. Arab. and Syr. versions, as wll as the context, evince. All the versions prove the same corruption to be. v. 10. Kennicott, Aquila, and the 5. edit. read where? Sym. I will be: (S. Jer.) so that the change probably took place between A. 130 and 200. Sept. "Where is thy cause gained, (in a lawsuit, or thy justice; dikh. H.) O death?" &c. - Eyes. I can find no consolation, (S. Jer.) because the people cause dissension by their perseverance in evil. Hebrew also, "repentance," &c. I will utterly destroy Ephraim; or rather, "vengeance...because he shall flourish," &c. If Ephraim would repent, this should not take place; but now, the Lord will bring Salmanasar, a burning wind. v. 15. C.

Ver. 15. Springs of death; or the sins which Christ, born of a virgin, shall destroy, and liberate the vessels of election from hell. S. Jer. H.
