#PleinAirpril 30/30 (Theme: Earth) “Bengal Tiger” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the 30th, and last painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and I painted a bengal tiger in the brush. Bengal tigers are carnivores with orange-yellow and white fur with black stripes. They are one of the largest wild cats, and are native to India. Bengal tigers are regularly threatened by habitat loss and poaching, and as of 2018, there are between 2.6 and 3.3 thousand bengals tigers left in the wild. #PleinAirpril 29/30 (Theme: Earth) “Peacock” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the 29th painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and I painted a colorful peacock perched in a tree. This bird has a special place for me, as I actually illustrated a children’s book about peacocks called “Pavo Finding New”. The name peacock refers specifically to male peafowl, while females are referred to as peahens. Male peacocks are wildly colorful with iridescent blues and greens and have distinct loud calls, while the females tend to be more plain and lack such majestic plumage. There are three bird species under the umbrella of peafowl - Pavo, Afropavo, and Pavonini, two being from India and Southeast Asia, and the other native to Africa. #PleinAirpril 26/30 (Theme: Earth) “Strawberry (Blue Jeans) Poison-Dart Frog” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the 26th painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and I painted a blue jeans morph of a strawberry dart frog resting on a log in the forest. Named for their coloration, these frogs are indigenous to the humid lowlands and forests of Central America. The strawberry dart frog’s diet consists of certain mites and ants, which causes their skin to become toxic, and these frogs have between 15-30 color morphs (one of which, being this blue jeans morph). #PleinAirpril 13/30 (Theme: Earth) “Tennessee River” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the thirteenth painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and we finally got a break in our storms out here in Tennessee, so I took a walk down to a nearby river and set up shop with my handmade pochade box, and did some painting. It was a beautiful day, and several birds and a squirrel kept me company while I worked. It felt good to finally put my pochade box to work again, especially after how long I spent working on it. Pochade boxes, for those who don’t know, are painting boxes that hold your supplies and act as an easel in the field. While all pochade boxes are different, I built mine out of an old cigar box, and added embedded magnets for palettes, and a ribbon for lifting materials. Plein air painting seems so much more challenging to me than painting in the studio (perhaps because there’s so much going on), and I am looking forward to doing more work outside. #PleinAirpril 25/30 (Theme: Earth) “Red Panda” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the 25th painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and in light of the fantastic recent movie, “Turning Red,” I painted a red panda. Red pandas are native to southwestern China and the eastern Himalayas, and are mammals with rust colored fur, white accents, and a long ringed tail. Built to climb, they have semi-retractable claws and flexible joints. Interestingly, the red panda is not closely related to the Giant Panda, and is instead more closely related to raccoons. They live in forests and have a die of bamboo shoots, leaves, and fruits. Adult red pandas are solitary and are threatened due to deforestation and poaching, however they are protected by several conservation programs. #PleinAirpril 16/30 (Theme: Earth) “Cottontail Rabbit” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the 16th painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and I painted a Cottontail rabbit grazing in a green grass field, just in time for Easter. Cottontail rabbits are named for their round, cotton-like tail. They can be found across the Americas, and often use other animals’ burrows to nest in. Their litters range from four to eight, and they become fully grown adults at three months, and go on to live for two years on average, due to their wide array of predators. Their hearing is their primary defense mechanism, and they eat a wide array of vegetation, including twigs, fruit, and leaves. I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and I painted the purple-blue night sky arching over the silhouette of a forest. I had the very unique opportunity to attend two Dark Skies Festivals - one in Sequoia National Park, and the other in Joshua Tree National Park. These festivals highlight teh beauty of the stars, and foster learning about space and conservation. They also provide several activities to enjoy and observe the natural beauty of skies without light pollution, geared toward all ages. #PleinAirpril 11/30 (Theme: Earth) “Fox” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the eleventh painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and for this work, I painted a red fox standing in tall grass beside a fallen tree. Red foxes can be seen all across the northern hemisphere, and appear in the wild, and also in suburban and urban areas. A little known fact is that males are called tods, females are called vixens, and cubs are known as kits. Foxes have long been considered symbols of mischief, and are widely known as tricksters, and appear in folklore and mythology worldwide. #PleinAirpril 8/30 (Theme: Earth) “The Garden Path” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the eighth painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). Today, I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and for this work, I decided to paint a stone path wandering through a lush, overgrown garden filled with white, pink, and red flowers.The history of gardens date back to Alexander the Great, and and appear in books like The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and poems such as “New Feet Within My Garden Go” by Emily Dickenson.
