ETL Engineer vs. Data Engineer: Which One Do You Need?
Tumblr media
If your business handles large data volumes you already know how vital it is to have the right talent managing it. But when it comes to scalability or improving your data systems, you must know whether to hire ETL experts or hire data engineers.
While the roles do overlap in some areas, they each have unique skills to bring forth. This is why an understanding of the differences can help you make the right hire. Several tech companies face this question when they are outlining their data strategy. So if you are one of those then let’s break it down and help you decide which experts you should hire.
Choosing the Right Role to Build and Manage Your Data Pipeline
Extract, Transform, Load is what ETL stands for. The duties of an ETL engineer include:
Data extraction from various sources.
Cleaning, formatting, and enrichment.
Putting it into a central system or data warehouse.
Hiring ETL engineers means investing in a person who will make sure data moves accurately and seamlessly across several systems and into a single, usable format.
Businesses that largely rely on dashboards, analytics tools, and structured data reporting would benefit greatly from this position. ETL engineers assist business intelligence and compliance reporting for a large number of tech organizations.
What Does a Data Engineer Do?
The architecture that facilitates data movement and storage is created and maintained by a data engineer. Their duties frequently consist of:
Data pipeline design
Database and data lake management
Constructing batch or real-time processing systems
Developing resources to assist analysts and data scientists
When hiring data engineers, you want someone with a wider range of skills who manages infrastructure, performance optimization, and long-term scalability in addition to using ETL tools.
Remote Hiring and Flexibility
Thanks to cloud platforms and remote technologies, you can now hire remote developers, such as data engineers and ETL specialists, with ease. This strategy might be more economical and gives access to worldwide talent, particularly for expanding teams.
Which One Do You Need?
If your main objective is to use clean, organized data to automate and enhance reporting or analytics, go with ETL engineers.
If you're scaling your current infrastructure or creating a data platform from the ground up, hire data engineers.
Having two responsibilities is ideal in many situations. While data engineers concentrate on the long-term health of the system, ETL engineers manage the daily flow.
Closing Thoughts
The needs of your particular project will determine whether you should hire a data engineer or an ETL. You should hire ETL engineers if you're interested in effectively transforming and transporting data. It's time to hire data engineers if you're laying the framework for your data systems.
Combining both skill sets might be the best course of action for contemporary IT organizations, particularly if you hire remote talent to scale swiftly and affordably. In any case, hiring qualified personnel guarantees that your data strategy fosters expansion and informed decision-making.

What is DBT and what are it’s pros and cons?
Certainly! Here’s a content piece on DBT (Data Build Tool), including its pros and cons:
Understanding DBT (Data Build Tool): Pros and Cons
In the realm of data engineering and analytics, having efficient tools to transform, model, and manage data is crucial. DBT, or Data Build Tool, has emerged as a popular solution for data transformation within the modern data stack. Let’s dive into what DBT is, its advantages, and its drawbacks.
What is DBT?
DBT, short for Data Build Tool, is an open-source command-line tool that enables data analysts and engineers to transform data within their data warehouse. Instead of extracting and loading data, DBT focuses on transforming data already stored in the data warehouse. It allows users to write SQL queries to perform these transformations, making the process more accessible to those familiar with SQL.
Key features of DBT include:
SQL-Based Transformations: Utilize the power of SQL for data transformations.
Version Control: Integrate with version control systems like Git for better collaboration and tracking.
Modularity: Break down complex transformations into reusable models.
Testing and Documentation: Include tests and documentation within the transformation process to ensure data quality and clarity.
Pros of Using DBT
Simplicity and Familiarity:
DBT leverages SQL, a language that many data professionals are already familiar with, reducing the learning curve.
Modular Approach:
It allows for modular transformation logic, which means you can build reusable and maintainable data models.
Version Control Integration:
By integrating with Git, DBT enables teams to collaborate more effectively, track changes, and roll back when necessary.
Data Quality Assurance:
Built-in testing capabilities ensure that data transformations meet predefined criteria, catching errors early in the process.
Documentation:
DBT can automatically generate documentation for your data models, making it easier for team members to understand the data lineage and structure.
Community and Support:
As an open-source tool with a growing community, there’s a wealth of resources, tutorials, and community support available.
Cons of Using DBT
SQL-Centric:
While SQL is widely known, it may not be the best fit for all types of data transformations, especially those requiring complex logic or operations better suited for procedural languages.
Limited to Data Warehouses:
DBT is designed to work with modern data warehouses like Snowflake, BigQuery, and Redshift. It may not be suitable for other types of data storage solutions or traditional ETL pipelines.
Initial Setup and Learning Curve:
For teams new to the modern data stack or version control systems, there can be an initial setup and learning curve.
Resource Intensive:
Running complex transformations directly in the data warehouse can be resource-intensive and may lead to increased costs if not managed properly.
Dependency Management:
Managing dependencies between different data models can become complex as the number of models grows, requiring careful organization and planning.
Conclusion
DBT has revolutionized the way data teams approach data transformation by making it more accessible, collaborative, and maintainable. Its SQL-based approach, version control integration, and built-in testing and documentation features provide significant advantages. However, it’s important to consider its limitations, such as its SQL-centric nature and potential resource demands.
For teams looking to streamline their data transformation processes within a modern data warehouse, DBT offers a compelling solution. By weighing its pros and cons, organizations can determine if DBT is the right tool to enhance their data workflows.

Agreed - I also think that a ton of what people call "enemies to lovers" is in fact this trope, though! "Enemies" isn't the right word (because they're relatively rarely ENEMIES), but it's just seen as the other option from "friends to lovers".
I think the most beautiful thing about writing of Howl and Sophie's pair is that they are written as people before being written as a pair. Let me explain this very quick.
The thing about book Sophie and Howl is that they are not really fully fitting into any "classic" romantic trope. They are not exactly enemies to lovers, as their angry chats are definitely cannot be considered a life or death battle, they are not rivals to lovers because the only aspect of rivalry between them is the cleaningness of Howl's room. They are not friends to lovers, as their relationship just doesn't fit into "friendship" structure at the very start, nor they are roomates (yes, they live in the same house but that's not the core aspect of their relationships). Of course, you can go on and fit the name of the trope you found specifically for them, but that's the thing.
They simply cannot be processed through a pairings lenses only, in order to understand how they act in relationship you need to analyse them separately, as a characters first of all. Cause that's what the book itself does!
Sure, it doesn't have a whole lot of romance instead, but it gives us time to learn and observe the life of incredibly written, alive characters, understand them as personalities first of all, while slowly immersing the dynamic between two characters (in this case, Howl and Sophie) into work. They are written as personalities, both being fully separated and interviewing, changing eachother's point of view.
It's difficult to find a trope for them. They're are not a trope. They are Howl and Sophie, and that's probably the only way their dynamic can be properly described. Just as real people, they are not really fitting into the boxes of linial character progression, but go way deeper into being complex, filled with little differences and moments only people with their personality can have in romantic (or any different) kind of interaction. They're imperfect, and silly, and multidimensional and the reader knows them well enough to imagine them interacting way beyond of what the book says to them.
They are being people before being a ship, a pair of a trope — and that's why they work so perfectly charming in the end.
Howl and Sophie are unique in being themselves.

finally watched btvs and here are my thoughts on spuffy:
i see why no etl ship has truly topped spuffy. the spark between the two is instant in their very first interaction and their chemistry/dynamic is consistently the highlight of the show.
what i love the most about it is that buffy is always truly alive and unapologetically herself with spike. it's him alone who allows her this boundless self-acceptance and freedom.
spuffy is so iconic and integral to buffy's story bc of what her relationship with spike represents. spike represents buffy's shadow self and the world buffy is destined for.
i haven't read the comics but i know the plot. i like that they seem to be spuffy-centric. buffy seems to have accepted that she is a slayer. she becomes a fulltime member of the sfpd supernatural division along with spike and it's hinted that spuffy is the endgame, or at least that they are the soulmates.
i do worry about the reboot sequel, though. these kinds of sequels most often than not end up messing up the established foundations.
i think the essential development for buffy is her accepting that she is not a normal girl and she doesn't want to be. she is the slayer walking through fire and darkness. her relationship with spike represents this self-acceptance.
and there still is a space for normalcy in buffy's life - her sister and her niece.
so i would hate for all of this to be disregarded and it to be revealed that buffy is living a fulltime suburban life with some random human guy. if that happens, i guess we can disregard the sequel as just one of the continuums, not *the* continuum. there are infinite numbers of the universes/timelines in the buffyverse anyways.

I tried to get myself to like gwyn and azriel but I just couldnt. Ill look at fanarts and stuff but I just cant SEE it.
I fear they would be boring. People call elain and azriel boring and cliche but be fr... thats literally gwyn and az. you can literally see how their story would develop. it would literally give feysand and nessian.... im tired of seeing the same stuff.
Hey anon 🫶
You’re so right. At one point, earlier on in the fandom, I too tried to get myself to see where gwynriels were coming from and what the appeal about Gwyn and Az were. It’s nothing special. There is nothing unique or interesting about Gwynriel.
I promise this is related to my poimt. Lately, there’s this discourse going on about the decline in individuality and quality of books. After 2020, people have started to notice that recent books are no longer as intricate as books once were. Every book within a genre feels the same. The plots, characters, dynamics, tropes etc - are all mirrors of each other. There isn’t individuality anymore when it comes to books within a set genre. Now, a genre that rlly increased in popularity was romantasy. Over the last few years, which trope has become increasingly more prominent? Enemies to lovers. Which fmc character type is more favoured? The sassy, “I can do it all”, powerful warrior who is the best at everything and is great at wielding a sword type. Almost every single book thats comes out will be advertised as enemies to lovers. The fmcs themselves have all become similar. Another point I would like to add in: when it comes to these sort of books, there will be lots of banter between the couple and the fmc always proving the mmc wrong - sometimes even challenging him. Aside from acotar: many of us are also readers who consume other genres and books/series. I think its fair enough to say, many of us consume all types of “popular” books. I can guarantee that many of us have read enemies to lovers books or even have it as a favourite trope. When you are constantly consuming a specific type of media, as a reader, you will want more of whatever you are consuming, limiting your mind to other possibilities. As an example, if you constantly are reading enemies to lovers books’ -> you won’t really like anything that is not enemies to lovers. Obviously, we all have our favourite genres and tropes we love to consume BUT we should always be open minded to try new things. Ok, slightly of course but back to my point:
Gwynriel fits in the checklist for your standard couple: in a fantasy, “enemies to lovers”, book. . Girlboss FMC that can do it all and shoves it to do the dark, broody MMC.
. “Banter”. The couple “challenging” each other
. MMC’s dark trauma and past that only the FMC can help him to heal
you get my point. People love gwynriel and it is so popular due to its lack of originality. They are such cardboard copies of a typical EtL book + we have literally gotten not much scenes on them -> it is so easy for their stans to self-insert and virtually put on any HC they want onto gwynriel.
Now compare that too elriel? There are not many “soft”, “feminine” fmcs. The recent one I can think of is “Evangeline Fox” from once upon a broken heart. So you already have Elain Archeron that stands out as an fmc from the norm - people aren’t used to her character type therefore view her as weak and boring. Elriel is far from enemies to lovers. They do not banter. They’re not the type of characters to draw attention to themselves or their relationship. Their dynamic is more mature instead of fun and childish. They have more dangerous stakes then anything gwynriel can have. Their story is more unique -> people aren’t used to that as it isn’t often potrayed in books anymore therefore they are disliked and people find them uninteresting.
Gwynriel is popular as it lacks originality. Elriel is hated due to their unique dynamic.
When I see gwynriel fanarts, the concept is lovely but knowing that Gwyn and Az don’t even like each other romantically and Az was ready to beg for another woman, it usually puts me off. I can’t view them as a couple since the books do not potray them as potential LIs.

Not that anyone cares, but…
I think I’m going to be loyal to Callum 💗
Yes, Dominic is the hottest sprite so far ❤️‍🔥
Yes, our LI was terrible after excess baggage 💀
However, fb gave us one volume to develop this supposed rivals/ETL storyline and they failed. There’s zero tension. Dominic acts like a man-child for half an episode and then quickly changes his tune and is all heart eyes for MC. I’m just not into it, which is sad because Dominic is so my type on paper 😔
He’s obviously meant to return with us from CA so I’ll bring him. And if Callum still acts a fool, I will go back and be messy with Dom 😏 If I ever replay this awful season, I’ll couple with Ren and dump him for Dominic. Although seeing Callum as the dumbass himbo will make me sad 😢 Never thought I’d be so sentimental about that silly pixel 🤣
