Not to preach to the choir but I wonder if people generally realize that AI models like ChatGPT aren't, like, sifting through documented information when you ask it particular questions. If you ask it a question, it's not sifting through relevant documentation to find your answer, it is using an intensely inefficient method of guesswork that has just gone through so many repeated cycles that it usually, sometimes, can say the right thing when prompted. It is effectively a program that simulates monkeys on a typewriter at a mass scale until it finds sets of words that the user says "yes, that's right" to enough times. I feel like if it was explained in this less flattering way to investors it wouldn't be nearly as funded as it is lmao. It is objectively an extremely impressive technology given what it has managed to accomplish with such a roundabout and brain-dead method of getting there, but it's also a roundabout, brain-dead method of getting there. It is inefficient, pure and simple.
#the notes on this post are about to get sooooo annoying#this doesnt touch on the fact that AI is stealing artist's jobs which i think is the real biggest harm of AI#but like#god#just take a minute and think about how stupid the current use-cases for AI are when you consider how it gets to those conclusions#this guesswork has its place in fields where guesswork is necessary like when screening for potential health issues in the medical field#but the benefit of the medical field is that when you get a false positive you can just do further testing to confirm the initial reading#that's called a second opinion and it is how the medical field is structured fundamentally#if you screen someone for cancer and it comes out positive#but it turns out they didnt really have cancer#that's fine! that's good news and it's good that you were at least wary of it!#but so many other applications for AI do not have this leeway where incorrect answers have further reaching consequences#and more importantly AI isn't stealing the fucking jobs of doctors!!!#although jesus i really wish doctors would stop using AI to take notes for patients#yes please lets give all my personal medical info to a big machine that stores and processes literally everything it hears#im sure there would never be far reaching consequences if that machine ever had a data breach#blah

Introducing the Thai Drama AO3 Trends Dashboard! (Beta) 🇹🇭
Over the last several weeks or so I've been building an auto-scraping setup to get AO3 stats on Thai Drama fandoms. Now I finally have it ready to share out!
Take a look if you're interested and let me know what you think :)
(More details and process info under the cut.)
Main Features
This dashboard pulls in data about the quantity of Thai Drama fics over time.
Using filters, it allows you to break that data down by drama, fandom size, air date, and a select number of MyDramaList tags.
You can also see which fandoms have had the most new fics added on a weekly basis, plus the growth as a percentage of the total.
My hope is that this will make it easier to compare Thai Drama fandoms as a collective and pick out trends that otherwise might be difficult to see in an all-AO3 dataset.
Process
Okay -- now for the crunchy stuff...
Scraping 🔎
Welcome to the most over-complicated Google Sheets spreadsheet ever made.
I used Google Sheets formulas to scrape certain info from each Thai Drama tag, and then I wrote some app scripts to refresh the data once a day. There are 5 second breaks between the refreshes for each fandom to avoid overwhelming AO3's servers.
Archiving 📁
Once all the data is scraped, it gets transferred to a different Archive spreadsheet that feeds directly into the data dashboard. The dashboard will update automatically when new data is added to the spreadsheet, so I don't have to do anything manually.
Show Metadata 📊
I decided to be extra and use a (currently unofficial) MyDramaList API to pull in data about each show, such as the year it came out and the MDL tags associated with it. Fun! I might pull in even more info in the future if the mood strikes me.
Bonus - Pan-Fandom AO3 Search
Do you ever find it a bit tedious to have like, 15 different tabs open for the shows you're currently reading fic for?
While making this dash, I also put together this insane URL that basically serves as a "feed" for any and all new Thai drama fics. You can check it out here! It could be useful if you like checking for new fics in multiple fandoms at once. :)
Other Notes
Consider this dashboard the "beta" version -- please let me know if you notice anything that looks off. Also let me know if there are any fandoms missing! Thanks for checking it out!
The inspiration for this dashboard came from @ao3-anonymous 's AO3 Fandom Trend Analysis Dashboard, which I used as a jumping off point for my own data dash. Please give them some love <3

Toastystats data dump: size of all fandom tags on AO3 (Feb 2025)
I told someone over in the fandom data projects community that I'd share data on the size of fandom tags on AO3; then it occurred to me that perhaps other folks might also want this spreadsheet.
(It sometimes takes a sec for the data to load in Google Sheets, because there's a lot of data. If anyone can't get it to load lmk, and I can share CSV files instead.)
Here's a graph of how many fandom tags are in each of the media categories that AO3 uses:
A few notes about this data below the cut:
This data comes from the category lists on AO3, e.g., the list of Anime & Manga fandoms. Sometimes those numbers don't quite match what's on the actual Works page for a tag (e.g., The X-Files Works page says the fandom has 27,303 works as I'm typing this up, but the TV Shows category page says The X-Files has 27,355 works. (I suspect the larger number may include drafts and/or some deleted works, but I don't know for sure.)
The spreadsheet contains one list of all the tags together (sorted by size) plus lists for each of the different categories (in separate spreadsheet tabs).
The categories overlap -- e.g., the fandom tag "Star Wars - All Media Types" appears in Movies, TV Shows, Books & Literature, Cartoons & Comics & Graphic Novels, Other Media, and Video Games.
The data also includes stats on category size -- i.e., the number of fandom tags in each category. (Used to make the above graph)
This data includes restricted works as well as public works (unlike a lot of my fandom stats).
Uncategorized Fandoms (often typos or errors, or other things that will eventually end up wrangled into a bigger fandom) are not included above, as there are no sizes for those and a lot of them will disappear once wranglers handle them. But you can browse the current list in this spreadsheet.
There may be errors! Please let me know if you find anything that's obviously just wrong.

The commodification of hobby-level art is the true villain here. And I say this as someone who does hobby-level art as my day job. All I truly want to do is sit around and draw stuff I like all day without having to worry if my basic needs for food and shelter are being met. Even when it was my sole income stream, I still gave out free art all the time because for me even when it's been about the money, it's always been foremost about creating. I want to create things because they're striking, not because I'm hungry. Capitalism really rotted our brains into thinking all of our talents need to be marketable side hustles because we're all temporarily embarrassed millionaires who just haven't had our lucky break yet. Meanwhile we're all too busy treading water trying to stay economically afloat to be rational about anything that threatens what little we DO have
#dasanye rambles#im just saying if no one was paying me to process these spreadsheets full of data i wouldn't do it#and if your lifes blood and biggest delight in life is creating pivot tables in raw csv files more power to you#but i think 99.9% of people dont want to be “guy who stares at excel for 9 hours a day for $40k/year” when they grow up#im a big UBI stan also. if we taxed the rich properly and reduced military spending this would be totally achievable#but what do i know chat... im just a girl 💅

im gonna share the heroforge shit i made for the old middle school oc reboot tonight, and maybe share lore tomorrow. but i'm gonna be doin stuff tomorrow so i may forget
also i may add an idiot to the roster but for now we have these guys. kari's the host btw. and that's what their shared body looks like
Kari - agender, prefers none but do whatever
Tethys - demi-girl, she/they
Delta- cis woman, she/her
Data - nonbinary, they/them
Lizzie - agender, prefers she/her but use whatever
Jennifer - officially haven't decided, but uses she/her. maybe others? we'll see
#the fuck do i call them#uhhhhh#Kari (OC)#Tethys (OC)#Delta (OC)#Data (OC)#Lizzie (OC)#Jennifer (OC)#maybe i'll give them a system name#but they're all scrawny fuckers#i think data might be the biggest. and they're a robot.#...iiiiiiiii just remembered star trek data (character) exists#um. oops...?#well. something's gonna have to change ig#name. appearance. one of the two. both if i'm feeling ambitious#ANYWAY my point was that the 7th little shit--if they do exist--needs to have a different body type#Fun fact! Tethys and Kari were possibilities I considered when I decided to change my name!#there were a couple of greek mythology names on the list.#along with tethys there was also 'io' and 'rhea'#kari i stole from digimon. she was always my favorite#and on that note i need to go the FUCK to bed goodnight

not to brag about being good at my job but I’ve now developed two separate tools for debugging entirely on my own within my company entirely from scratch without help and A. it makes my job so much fucking easier and B. my boss is thinks im incredible just because im too lazy to want to write the same bits of code over and over just for debugging purposes
#unimportant thoughts#one i wrote 2-3 months ago#but i upgraded it this week to add in even more#and its just. perfect now.#given an id from any of the programs we built and run in our company#i instantaneously return everything about it#its name; what it does; what type of program it is; what server its run on; when it runs; where it connects; the parameters needed to#connect to wherever it connects; whether the program is currently turned on; the last 10 times the program ran; how many minutes each of#those runs took; how many files each of those runs created; whether those runs were successful; code snippets you can copy paste and run in#another window to look at the files created by each of those runs; the files created by the most recent run; thise file names; those file s#sizes; what types of files they are; whether theyre encrypted#how theyre encrypted#all of that and MORE#most of the information was already there but it took fucking 20 minutes to get all the information you needed#and you had to run a bunch of different snippets of code to get all the information and then put it all together#and now you can just fucking pop in the id of the program and .02 of a second later all the information is on your screen#AND IT MAKES MY LIFE SO MUCH EASIER#so. so. so. much. easier.#and then this week I wrote another program so I can compare runtimes of two different runs of the same program together based on how we stor#runtime data in our database#csuse i was tired of going back and forth manually between to different runs to compare#so now i have a program that just takes the ids of two different runs and compares them#doesnt even matter if the checkpoints are different I programmed it to figure out the order automatically and plug in any missing holes#finds the differences in runtime automatically and flags the biggest differences#and I can even customize how much of a difference I care about or to hide things I don’t care about

Harry!!!! I successfully edited the dog base to give him muttonchops and some hair, *and* figured out a way to have him keep his jacket. His shirt will still be swap-able like the rest of AC's animals. I unfortunately did not have the triangle wiggle room for him to keep the tie :(
(Design lifted from here)
#disco elysium#harry du bois#animal crossing#the biggest hurdle right now is that there's only one jock dog in new leaf to replace but his name is too short#so i'm swapping out benjamin and I have to figure out what all the data in the hex editor means#so I can turn him into a jock#I looked into bear for him too but there's surprisingly not many bear jocks if any?#I'm gonna go back to kim and do the jacket thing for him too#he just looks so naked without the orange

I'm not an extrovert. At all. In everyday life, I'm a yapper, sure, but I need someone to first assure me I am okay to yap, so I don't start conversations, even when I really want to join in sometimes! It's just the social anxiety acting up. God knows where from and why I lose a lot of my inhibitions when it comes to talking to people about music. I don't know where the confidence has suddenly sprung from. I've made a crazy amount of friends in musical circles, either just talking to people about common music or (since it is after all in music circles) talking to bands about their own music. I let out a sigh of relief any time an interaction goes well, because in truth it's going against my every instinct. I wish I could do that in everyday life
#like that's the point where we need to remind everyone around me that as much as I say#radio is 'a job'-- it's not 'my job' lol. I wish I was this interested in data science#but like. Honestly?? I'm not even a data scientist!? I answered a few questions about classical AI having come from a computer science back#background and now people are saying to me 'I know you're a data scientist and not a programmer' sir I am a computer scientist#what are you on about#and like I guess I get to google things and they're paying me so I'm not complaining but like I am not a data scientist#my biggest data scientist moment was when I asked 'do things in data science ever make sense???' and a bunch of data scientists went#'no :) Welcome to the club' ???????#why did I do a whole ass computer science degree then. Does anyone at all even want that anymore. Has everything in the realm of#computer science just been Solved. What of all the problems I learned and researched about. Which were cool. Are they just dead#Ugh the worst thing the AI hype has done rn is it has genuinely required everyone to pretend they're a data scientist#even MORE than before. I hate this#anyway; I wish I didn't hate it and I was curious and talked to many people in the field#like it's tragicomedy when every person I meet in music is like 'you've got to pursue this man you're a great interviewer blah blah blah'#and like I appreciate that this is coming from people who themselves have/are taking a chance on life#but. I kinda feel like my career does not exist anymore realistically so unless 1) commercial radio gets less shitty FAST#2) media companies that are laying off 50% of their staff miraculously stop or 3) Tom Power is suddenly feeling generous and wants#a completely unknown idiot to step into the biggest fucking culture show in the country (that I am in no way qualified for)#yeah there's very very little else. There's nothing else lol#Our country does not hype. They don't really care for who you are. f you make a decent connection with them musically they will come to you#Canada does not make heroes out of its talent. They will not be putting money into any of that. Greenlight in your dreams.#this is something I've been told (and seen) multiple times. We'll see it next week-- there are Olympic medallists returning to uni next wee#no one cares: the phrase is 'America makes celebrities out of their sportspeople'; we do not. Replace sportspeople with any public professi#Canada does not care for press about their musicians. The only reason NME sold here was because Anglophilia not because of music journalism#anyway; personal

Note to self: word prayers better when doing divinatory sessions
I think I've mentioned this before, but I do yes/no stone pulls on Sundays to ask for guidance about maintaining my health re: my commute because it's 2-2.5 hours each way via public transit if everything runs on time. It's rough on me in multiple ways and can lead to even more migraines than usual or being too fatigued to work at all, and it can be difficult to tell whether I'll have the spoons to go in person.
This past Sunday I was exhausted & stressed because of, you know, the horrors, and said my initial prayer a little differently than I usually do. I still invoked Apollo and Hermes as always, as both of them cover divination by lots, Apollo's domain covers health & disease, and he's the one I turn to for divination by default.
Now, the vast majority of the guidance and lessons Apollo has given have had to do with recognizing my physical & mental limits, especially around this issue. The answers I was getting this time around were...odd but not quite in the way they have been with just dud pulls, so I started asking clarifying questions to figure out what was going on. After a few - establishing that there was a reason for the answers but it wasn't a test or punishment or Apollo messing with me (which would have been. odd) - I realized that while I'd invoked Hermes as a god of divination by lots alongside Apollo, I had not explicitly asked him to act as a messenger and aid in communication this time around, nor had I asked Apollo to guide the divination session with the wording I usually use.
I think you can see where I'm going with this.
I re-said the prayer (correctly this time) and confirmed that it was, in fact, Hermes at first while re-doing the initial set of questions (which were much more consistent in the usual way), as well as confirming that the issue was the prayer wording. Lesson learned lol
#full transparency: shortly after the initial set of re-do questions i had a panic attack/meltdown (b/c of. again. the Horrors)#that was made worse by the third part of the session (some questions i thought to ask after the re-dos) being a dud#i did another pull wednesday morning after i had had a couple days to recover & the biggest stressor was over with#& i felt ready to re-engage with it#(& also knew that not clarifying the last part of the pull would make the Everything worse)#and i asked about each section (hermes -> commute question re-do -> the Bad Times questions)#and got *another* confirmation that it was actually hermes at first & that the middle section was accurate and (thankfully) that#the last one was not#i check my work *thoroughly* b/c tangible external things like divination are the most reliable things i have#b/c i cant always trust internal cues#coriander says#helpol#apollo#apollon#hermes#hellenic pagan#hellenic polytheism#hellenic community#divination#also! to be clear! ymmv when worshipping/working with/etc. deities#just b/c this was my experience doesnt mean this will be your experience!#also also. i personally dont believe all of the gods might do the sort of thing hermes did. he's a trickster god#which is why the possibility that it was him was on my radar in the first place#apollo doesnt have trickster aspects afaik (i could be wrong!) so it seemed off. and hermes wasnt. like. *impersonating* apollo#i didnt ask explicitly who it was at first b/c that's not a necessary part of my process- you dont *need* to clarify by default in helpol#& now that i know why it happened i can avoid the situation in the future & have a data point to compare to in case it *does* happen again
