This serves me right, because I always complain about fantasy writers tying up their fantasy kingdoms too nicely lol. I love open endings but this (+ the Kamet and Costis situation?) is driving me nuts 😭

At first I thought this meant Gen and Irene lost both kids before passing away, but it might also be that they died relatively young and that’s when Hector “was lost” (???????)... But Eugenia needs to have been relatively young when she run away (???), since she lived to see her great-granddaughter.

Also, clearly she married into nobility -- it’s so puzzling? Maybe Pheris ‘help’ was arranging a match to her, or enough pomp that she looked less like a runaway and more like an... exiled princess? Noble on vacation? That is, IF he helped at all, since this is speculation from three generations later... boy!

It’s very melancholic to think of the possibility that this was just a big disaster to Gen and Irene -- losing (??????) a kid and then having the other run away! I generally love stuff like this, but somehow this possibility just seems so bleak to me... Maybe it’s because the siblings don’t even like, disappear together, as far as we know. Megan Whalen Turner didn’t allow me a single pair of weird siblings 😭

The more I think about it, the more I think the inevitable upheaval of the transition between "four small kingdoms and four monarchs under one Annux" to "three and a half kingdoms" to "one large one" which appears to have happened extremely quickly (within Eugenia's lifetime and almost within Helen's) would have been much worse if the twins had stuck around.

Like. You would have people wanting to elect the Annux the Sounisian way, the way the treaty sets out, but Hector would ABSOLUTELY be under tremendous pressure to make himself Annux because his father was, seriously undermining the treaty. It almost has to be someone else, to prove the treaty works. Actually, I think there's no way the treaty really could have lasted without making a whole new country, what with Eddis intentionally making it so that she's the last sovereign in order to move her people out of lava range. The pool of people who are eligible to be Annux is unsustainably small. If both Hector and Eugenia make themselves scarce/refuse to come back, and Pheris won't take the throne because it's "his fault" the kids are gone, the crown of the unified Hephestian Penninsula can only go to a kid of Helen and Sophos,' and voila, you have one country under one monarch with relatively little bloodshed, within one or two generations. Imagine if Hector had been in the running --at the very least, the Peninsula would have split in two, with one faction supporting Hector on his own and on Eugenides' account, and another (larger, because of the two countries involved) supporting one of Helen's and Sophos' kids, with Eugenia's choice of who to support potentially influencing the Eddisians one way or another.

And so, ironically, both Old Sounis and Erondites eventually got what they wanted...but only when it was good for the people!

Everyone in the Queen's Thief server is coming up with things where Hector disappeared on purpose into a happy peaceful life of not being king and I'm the sick freak who's like. I think he died and I think that Gen died young and I think that Eugenia ran away.

the immakuk & ennikar poem needed a good copy edit (at least 3 typos??) but 1) while the cute fable section with the crow doesn’t really have the same vibe as kamet’s poetry in thick as thieves, it DOES feel like the stories gen tells in the thief and i love the idea that over time kamet unbends and cares less about the authenticity of it all and has fun with it and 2) the frame story of kamet telling an older eugenides this poem to cheer him up because in the poem immakuk leaves his kingdom to his son…but then apparently hector dies or disappears and then eugenia leaves…???? what a twist of the knife????

actually the more i think about the implications of both heirs being lost the harder it is to see any of the other future stories as happy! like sure costis may have 8 kids and 9 wives but what about gen’s kids???? :(

Timris Ormentiedes (fanart, fanfic)

I love everything about this kid—the sweet way he older-brothers all of the younger children on the farm, the idea of him growing up learning Pheris' signs, and the implication that the decision-making adults in his life are Costis and Kamet. Does Timris play a role in the writing of Pheris' histories? Is he friends with Hector and Eugenia? What is his relationship with Kamet like?

Are Kamet and Costis okay with him moving to the palace to be an assistant secretary of the archives, or is there family drama about it? How much does Timris know about the events of the main series?

I am more interested in Timris in his own right than I am in whatever is going on with the various relationships in News from the Palace—but if that's something you want to delve into, I'm fine with any explanation of his parentage.

2. Relationship: Lavia/Celia (fanart, fanfic)

We know so little about these two, but what MWT gives us is a delight—the built-in love triangle! Bad love poetry! A cute dance scene reunion at the end of the series!

Please feel free to make your cast of characters as large or as small as you like. How does Celia feel about being courted by Verimius (possibly the most obnoxious of Gen's attendants)? Is Lavia's poetry really that bad? Does Celia accompany Irene to war in Return of the Thief? What is it like for Lavia at court, as a (presumably) unmarried woman who isn't one of Irene's attendants? Do either of them ever interact with any of the main canon characters?

3. Skell | Skerrell (fanart, fanfic)

This guy is just a walk-on character but I love him. He makes a big enough impression on Kamet that Kamet remembers his name (even if he can't pronounce or spell it, lmao). I would love Skell's outsider perspective on whatever he thinks is going on between uh, "Aris" and "Metit." I would also love to learn more about his backstory in Brael, or about what happens to him after the Namreen catch up to the caravan. Does he really end up fighting for the Mede army? What about a missing scene, where he interacts with Kamet or Costis?

(I've also thought about a crack fic scenario where Skerrell and Kamet make friends, ditch Costis, and run away to the "empire's eastern frontier," i.e. Setra. Please feel free to one-up me with something equally ridiculous.)

4. Aristogiton (fanart, fanfic)

The MVP of the Queen's Thief series and a better friend than Costis deserves. I would love a story about him set at any point in the main timeline, from when he and Costis are trainees through Return of the Thief. I would love to see Aris' outsider perspective on any of the events he witnesses—I would also love to see him interacting with either Gen or Irene, particularly during COK or TAT when Costis is out of the picture. What is Aris like as a squad leader—either throughout KOA, or the sadder events of ROTT? Does he ever work things out with Legarus? I have a theory that Aris is the unnamed guard in ROTT who tells Gen that Costis and Kamet are at the picket lines—but whether or not that's true, what is his reunion with Costis like? How do Aris and Kamet get along?

I have seen criticism of Aris for the scene in KOA where he and Costis get drunk and gossip about whether they think Irene is wife material (lmao), but honestly I think he is so normal for what he says in that scene—and I would love to see more of Aris' blunt takes about characters whom we-as-the-audience love, but who might actually be a pain to deal with in real life.

Finally, I am agnostic about whether Aris and Costis ever made out on one of their camping trip vacations, but I absolutely shipped it when there were only 3 books, so if your heart takes you there, I'm here for it.

DNW: Modern AU; any interpretation of the end of the series where Aris does not survive and thrive.

5. Kamet (fanart, fanfic)

Easily my favorite character in the series. I would love to see more of QOA or ROTT through his eyes. I would also love to read something about him negotiating his new life in Attolia—whether that's the handful of weeks he spends there at the end of TAT, or something set after he returns there at the end of ROTT. What are his relationships like with Costis' family and friends? When Kamet says of Gen, "What a piece of work he was. I don't know why I like him as much as I do," is that his final word, or do they ever really become friends again? What about his friends in the kitchens?

I would also love to see Kamet interacting with other expats from the Mede empire: the betrayed spies who fled to Attolia and were granted land in KOA? Gen's Mede language tutor? The elephant handlers Irene captures in ROTT? Laela, in a continuation of The Arrival?

If you are interested in writing something darker, I would love to read about Kamet's relationships with the other slaves in Nahuseresh's household—particularly the ones whose names he records: Laela, Marin, Jeffa, Mirad, Hormud, or Kep. (When Kamet thinks about renaming himself, he considers "Jeffa" and "Nish"—is Nish also someone who meant something to him?) I am dying of curiosity about the "criminals" Kamet knows in Ianna-Ir through his work for Nahuseresh, and/or the details of the heist he and Nahuseresh plotted to steal that unbroken statue out of Sudesh's studio—and I would love to read a fucked-up story that explores his relationship with Nahuseresh when things were going (relatively) well between them.

6. Relationship: Kamet & Laela (fanart, fanfic)

I would love to know more about this friendship. What exactly does Kamet tell Gen about Laela? It's clear he knows their relationship is more than transactional—hello, she lets him bleed all over her pillow—but we never get a clear picture of what that really means. What is it like, negotiating a friendship with a dancing girl after what happened with Marin? What exactly is Kamet risking when he asks Nahuseresh not to sell her? And what is their reunion like in Attolia?

I would love to read a continuation of The Arrival. I would be equally happy with a post-canon reunion that ignores or contradicts Moira's Pen.

I would also happily read backstory for the two of them set before Thick as Thieves, or a canon-universe AU where Laela somehow ends up in Attolia before the end of the series.

7. Relationship: Costis/Kamet (fanart, fanfic)

OTP of all OTPs. I would love to read a story about these two that shows the darker aspects of their relationship—I think they're in love and perfect for each other, but they really go through it in Thick as Thieves! What is it like to have marital fights when one of you took an entire book to learn how to express anger and the other one has spent 2 books expressing his anger by hitting people? How does Costis feel about sitting out for the entire war in ROTT, and how does Kamet feel about still having a price on his head, even in Roa?

I would also love to read a missing scene from Thick as Thieves. What do they do in Traba? When do Kamet's stitches come out? How excruciatingly awkward is their stint with the caravan (I would love Costis' perspective on this)? What about an outsider perspective from any of the other characters: the other guards in the caravan? The slaves (or the slavers) outside Koadester? Hemke or his family? Godekker?

I would also love to read a canon-era AU where they meet in a slightly different way or something in the Thick as Thieves timeline goes differently. What if they met during QOA, or Kamet somehow ended up staying in Attolia? What if Gen went through with his initial plan from KOA to transfer Costis to the border forts near Magyar, and Kamet was rescued/kidnapped by someone else and still ended up in Roa? What if one of their narrow escapes in Thick as Thieves went wrong?

I would like to clarify on something I've seen the people have said a lot since The Sea Beast came out: the characters we see in the movie aren't pirates.

Why? Well, because pirates were people who stole property from other ships on the sea. There's no evidence in the movie that stated the crew of the Inevitable took away the richness of other nations. Not even in the name of the King and Queen as the corsaires did in their times.

The crew is completely a group of sea monster hunters sponsored by the Empire, they don't steal anything and aren't chased by any law.

I don't know if you like to call them pirates just because they behave like that, still, they're just common sailors and I don't see the point of calling them otherwise.

You can congratulate me if you want, but just to be clear, here in México there's not such a thing like a mexican party for Cinco de Mayo. Of course, we have the day off, there are some commemorations in schools and the representation of the Battle in Puebla, but that's all. So no, I don't celebrate it and I don't consider it as the National Mexican Day. Wait four months later for September 15 and 16 to arrive and then we'll be talking.

I have something to tell to the people throwing soup at protection glasses of paintings

First of, why do you attempt against art? Do you really think it's useless and doesn't make any difference? Do you have any idea of how much it costed materially, physically and psycologically to the artists, principally Monet and Van Gogh? For these artists, their artworks were literally their lives. If it wasn't about how art made them feel alive by expressing their most profound feelings, was about how with art, they literally won their daily bread. It was their salary. Art meant so much for them as a way to send a message, to open up minds and challenge an elitist society that found impressionism worthless. They were outcasts.

Mainly for Van Gogh, life was rough. He couldn't even afford food, he only sold one (1) of his many paintings while he was alive, and he had way worse phsycological problems that you could ever imagine to the point he had to be half of his life on a mental hospital. But art held him on the worst times, gave him courage to go on. Even more, he tried anything before art to please his parents, to feel worthy, to make him feel useful, but nothing except art made him feel like he was doing something self satisfactory. Art doesn't have more worth than life, but life without art is meaningless. Art is nothing more than the incarnated manifestation of life experiences.Twelve Sunflowers in a Vase isn't but part of a collection that Van Gogh painted to show how much life was worth living for because society wasn't paying attention to little details that form part of our daily lives and make life beautiful. He was a social activist, and it can be seen that portrayed in many of his paintings. That painting you're attempting to, is the ancestor of the camera your pal was holding. Art makes more concience than soup spilled on a canvas.

Your points are very valid, and I agree with you. The World is at war, hunger and poverty is everywhere and we're on a climate World change crisis. Even more, it's outrageously immoral the prices that these paintings cost today. I think it would be better that these museums were open to the public in general but in the end, there is maintenance staff that live from the salary that the money won generates. But how do you expect to end worldwide hunger when you're wasting food on a multimillion dollar painting? Why do you brag of being against oil when you dye your hair with chemicals and use new printed shirts made out of this oil? How much did it cost the ticket to enter these museums? Why don't you spend that money donating to organizations that urgently need it? If the cans of soup you're throwing at paintings were better donated to home shelters or feeding organizations, people would stop starving. If you're against something, reduce, don't waste, be congruent.

There are other things you can do to stop these problems. There's a peaceful economic sabotage that you can do, way more effective than you think:

Stop buying oil based products like plastic, hair dye, cosmetics, clothing. Go for naturally made things, for artisan made things. You can buy clothing on second hand stores, and you'll reduce the massive clothing production that wastes an amount of water litters and contaminates air, ground and water.

Buy to local sellers. Many products are transported by vehicles like cars, airplanes and ships that use oil fuel and generates high amount of co2. The closer you buy, the better you're helping to reduce oil use. Also, go for public transportation or, if your destination is near, you can walk or use other transportation like bicycles.

Reduce your electricity use and the time you spend online. In the present, the majority of electricity is powered by oil based power centers, and all of Internet data is stored on centers that have to be cooled down by electricity so, the less you stay on social media, the more you will prevent the massive production of unnecessary electricity.

Donate money if you can to organizations that search for other electricity generators that are eco-friendly. Donate old clothing to people that need it, and consume food responsibly so you don't leave leftovers. The food that you get left can be donated as well.

Stop blaming art, and start looking to what artists of the past have to tell you and teach you through their paintings instead. Art is World Culture Patrimony. Start living responsibly and take real action, change your lifestyle, and you'll see how change starts becoming true. If no one uses oil, governments will stop producing it.

Aaaaand, bam! My contribution to Queen's Thief Appreciation Week! It's pen, watercolor, and colored pencil and was ultra fun to work on.

Last year I did an ominous piece of Gen falling, so this year I pivoted and did happily ever after.

It's got all your basic moving parts: Gen and Irene heading up to the crenellations,

Phresine loving on baby Hector while baby Eugenia drops a stolen earring that matches her dad's (with her mountain goat plushie nearby),

Helen and Sophos just being stupid cute with their wee heir, while the Magus still studies his map and Pol's sword leans on the wall beneath the three countries' banners,

Your pantheon of deities, with the Great Goddess at the center,

Teleus and Relius enjoying each other's company while Pheris (now with mobility aid!) ignores them (also there's a pigeon),

Costis and bespectacled Kamet with a plate of nut cakes, and a familiar author in the background with her stack of six books,

And, finally, our long-awaited elephant, while two of Gen's attendants search for their king.
