The common cuttlefish also known as the European cuttlefish or the European common cuttlefish is one of the largest and best-known cuttlefish species from the genus sepia. It is native to the waters of the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, North, and Baltic Seas. They are a migratory species that spend the summer and spring in shallow inshore waters (sometimes even brackish estuaries) for spawning and then move to depths of 330 to 650ft (100 to 200m) during autumn and winter. Common cuttlefish tend to spend there days resting underneath sandy/ muddy substrate and emerge at night to hunt prey such as shrimp, small fish, crabs, clams, and snails. Common cuttlefish are themselves preyed upon by sharks, larger boney fish, seals, dolphins, porpoises, octopi, squid, and other cuttlefish. They have many defensive mechanisms to help protect them from predators including a siphon which they can use to shoot water out of to propel them at high speeds away from danger, ink which can distract and disorient a predator as the cuttlefish escapes, and their camouflage abilities which can help them avoid predators altogether. Reaching nearly 3ft (90cms) in length the common cuttlefish is amongst the largest species of cuttlefish. They have an internal cuttlebone, often washing up on beaches and used to supplement the diet of pet birds. The cuttlebone assists in buoyancy. The common cuttlefish has two highly developed eyes, eight arms which are located around the mouth and are used to hold and move objects, and a pair of feeding tentacles, longer and thinner than the others, that are normally hidden from sight. Like many cephalopods, their skin is covered in chromatophores, special coloured cells that can stretch and contract to allow the cuttlefish to rapidly change colour. The colours created reflect the health and mood of the cuttlefish, and special patterns and colours are used in courtship and to startle predators. Breeding occurs during the spring and summer in shallow waters, male cuttlefish will display a black and white zebra pattern on their mantle to attract females and females will display a uniform grey colour to indicate they are ready to mate. Around 30 to 90 days after mating the mother Cuttlefish will lay 100 to 1000 eggs and attach them to seaweed, shells, or other substrates to prevent them from drifting away and have ink deposits on them to aid in camouflage. Under ideal conditions a common cuttlefish will reach sexual maturity at 14 and 18 months of age and may live just 2 years.

Taxonomy Tournament: Results of Round 1
Long post, many stats.
The three biggest landslides were Opiliones (daddy longlegs) beating Parasitiformes (ticks) (87.89%, 334 to 46 votes), Terebellida (Pompeii worms) beating Scolecida (bamboo worms) (88.94%, 193 to 24 votes), and Hemiptera (true bugs) beating Phthiraptera (lice) (91.04%, 19 to 193 votes).
The three closest matches were Perissodactyla (horses and rhinos) beating Pholidota (pangolins) (50.6%, 747 to 765 votes), Caniformia (canines, bears, foxes...) beating Feliformia (felines, mongooses...) (50.28%, 538 to 532 votes), and Struthioniformes (ostriches) and Rheiformes (rheas) tying (50%, 144 to 144 votes).
To break the tie, I will discount my own vote (for Struthioniformes), so Rheiformes win.
Interesting that the top 3 landslides were all invertebrates (actually all top 7), while the 3 closest matches were all between Chordates (actually 4).
The average winning percent was 67.10% for all matches, and was 71.28% between non-chordates and 62.91% between chordates. So the chordate matches were closer in general.
As you may have guessed from the biggest landslides, parasites fared quite poorly. While the bracket started with 9 primarily parasitic clades, only 3 made it to this round (Hirudinea [leeches], Eucestoda [tapeworms], D. medinensis [nematode]) and all three were against other parasites.
The biggest landslide among Mammals was Didelphidae (possums) beating Hyracoidea (dassies) (80.26%)
The biggest landslide among Birds was Columbiformes (pigeons and doves) beating (flamingos) (72.34%)
The biggest landslide among Non-Avian Reptiles was Serpentes (snakes) beating Rhynchocephalia (tuatara) (60.60%). The closest match among Reptiles was Iguania (iguanas, chameleons...) beating Anguimorpha (Komodo dragon) (51.09%)
The biggest landslide among Cartilaginous Fish was Myliobatiformes (stingrays) beating Rajiformes (skates) (81.20%). The closest match was Rhinopristiformes (shovelnose ray, sawfish...) beating Torpediniformes (electric rays) (51.44%)
The biggest landslide among Bony Fish (and Chordates in general) was Osteoglossiformes (African Knifefish) beating Hiodontiformes (mooneyes) (84.71%). The closest match was Toxotidae (archerfish) beating Istiophoriformes (swordfish) (50.64%).
The biggest landslide among Echinoderms was Asteroids (starfish) beating Peripodida (sea daisies) (82.95%). The closest match was Echinacea (sea urchins) beating Gnathostomata (sand dollars) (55.38%).
The closest match among Annelids was Eunicida (eg. Bobbit worm) beating Phyllodocida (eg. Gossamer worm) (54.38%)
The biggest landslide among Gastropods was Neomphalida (volcano snails) beating Umbraculoidea (false limpets) (86.67%). The closest was Conidae (cone snails) beating Strombidae (conches) (51.39%)
The biggest landslide among Cephalopods was Sepiida (cuttlefish) beating Spirulida (Ram's horn squid) (77.53%). The closest match was Oegopsida (glass squid, giant squid...) beating Myopsida (European squid, reef squid...) (61.9%).
The biggest landslide among other molluscs was Polyplacophora (chitons) beating Scaphopoda (Tusk Shells) (84.35%). The closest was Heterodonta (edible clams) beating Palaeoheterodonta (freshwater mussels) (52.08%)
The closest match among Insects was Mantodea (mantises) beating Blattodea (roaches and termites) (72.9%). Interestingly still a pretty big landslide.
The biggest landslide among Crustaceans was Thecostraca (barnacles) beating Tantulocarida (parasites of crustaceans) (83.33%). The closest match was Branchiopoda (fairy shrimp) beating Copepods (56.54%)
The closest match among Invertibrates was Eucestoda (tapeworms) beating Amphilinidea (parasites of turtles) (50.65%).
Round 2 starts tomorrow!

Bestiaryposting Results: Mlekragg
Unsurprisingly, multiple people read the entry and immediately clocked what this was. (Thank you for not actually making a guess in text, so that people who don't recognize it are able to work without that preconception.) I didn't want to leave it out, because the mythological ones are fun, but unlike some of the others, the modern conception of this beast is pretty much exactly what the bestiary says.
Anyway, as always, if you don't know what I'm talking about, you can find an explanation for this whole thing at https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting. If you want to join in, the new entry for each week is tagged with "maniculum bestiaryposting" so it should be findable. This week's entry can be reviewed here:
Below the cut you will find the drawings responding to it, in roughly chronological order:
Tumblr media
@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) decided to branch out in an unusual direction with this one, in order to avoid drawing the creature they'd identified from the entry and also have some fun with it. I just think this is some quality creature design. Love the mask-thing, love the springy tail, and that's a really good rendering of a cuttlefish face IMHO. There's a really interesting explanation for all of these features, what inspired them and how it all works together, in the linked post, which you should go read.
Tumblr media
@moonygryffin (link to post here) took a more direct approach, with the twist that the creature here is modeled on American fauna rather than ones the medieval Europeans would have been aware of. The body is a mountain lion, and the man-like head is a golden-headed lion tamarin, which of course comes with its own mane. I enjoy the choice to not use a lion lion, but rather two animals with "lion" in their name; also I've always thought lion tamarins were very cool-looking. For more details -- and an example of an attempt by MoonyGryffin to draw the same creature several years ago -- see the linked post. (Also thank you for providing alt text.)
Tumblr media
@sweetlyfez (link to post here) has made an attempt to take the entry literally without drawing the creature she has recognized, which is a challenge considering how specific the description is. I think the decision to give it flea legs to help with that exceptional jumping is clever. SweetlyFez describes the result as an "awful creature" and... honestly I can't argue, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near one of these. In fact I think I'm going to wrap up this commentary and scroll down so I don't keep making eye contact with it.
Tumblr media
@pomrania has also decided to go the route of "let's get weird with it", and avoided the literal interpretation by re-analyzing the word "has". This is similar to that style of joke one hears now and then -- you know, "he has the heart of a poet... he keeps it in a jar at home." (Incidentally, props to Mary Shelley for being perhaps the only person who could make that claim and not be kidding.) So this creature has the face of a man and the body of a lion, not in the sense that it was born with them, but in the sense that it keeps them as possessions. Very clever, and the underlying creature design is also fantastically creepy in my opinion.
Tumblr media
@coolest-capybara (link to post here) mentions that she didn't recognize the description, and has given us this really cool-looking, rather menacing creature in their excellent medieval style. (This is why I insist on not naming the beasts even when it seems clear what it is -- this amazing piece of art might have looked entirely different if someone posted a spoiler.) I'm really struck by how it simultaneously looks like a patchwork sort of creature (different front & back legs, etc.) but all flows together into a cohesive whole. Just really well done, I think. (Also, thank you for including alt text.)
Tumblr media
@cheapsweets (link to post here) has drawn the creature mid-leap, showing off its jumping prowess by shooting straight up into the air. I think this drawing does a very good job at combining human and lion anatomy to make something unsettling -- and the inclusion of the skull diagram up in the top left points to the amount of thought that went into this. As always, please check out the linked post for a detailed discussion of the design. (Also, thank you for including alt text.)
Tumblr media
@strixcattus (link to post here) has drawn one that's oddly cute, and looks a bit worried. However, according to the description they've written in the linked post, this reaction on my part is probably going to get me killed, because apparently they're still quite vicious. I like it, though -- and, as always, I urge you to go read the linked post for this one.
On to the Aberdeen Bestiary... oh, we can't, actually. This is another missing page. So here's the illustration from the Ashmole Bestiary instead:
Tumblr media
So, first of all, this is indeed the manticore, and I'm sure most if not all of the people who said they had guessed it got that correct.
Second, we can also note that all the artists who said something along the lines of "well we know about the issues of drawing medieval scorpions, so the scorpion-tail description doesn't need to be literal" were also correct there. Apparently this time a scorpion tail is just spiky all over, which I have to admit does look kinda cool.
Now let's address the elephant in the room. WHAT is that thing on its HEAD? My best guess is that it's meant to be a crown -- medieval art often sticks hats on nonhuman creatures with human faces, almost as if the artist wants to make sure you know it looks like a human head on purpose. I don't see crowns that often, though; usually it's just a cloth hat. (The one in Bodley MS 764, where I got the text for this entry, is clearly wearing a Phrygian cap.) I find myself unable to see it as anything but a daring hairstyle that is absolutely not working for it, though.
Anyway. The manticore is an odd one in its continuity here -- a lot of the mythical creatures in the bestiary have been changed, reinterpreted, or forgotten in the intervening centuries. I think maybe the manticore happens to have hit that sweet spot where it's popular enough that people remember it, but not so popular that it gets excessively telephoned through widespread transmission. I think a couple people noted that the Standard Fantasy manticore is more or less spot on to this description, and indeed, I can only think of one change:
Tumblr media
(Art from the Magic: the Gathering card "Crimson Manticore", artist Daniel Gelon)
At some point, those bastards got wings. It's not universal at this time, but if you do an image search for "manticore", the majority of the modern ones are winged. I'm not really sure where that came from.
(Side note: I tested this by doing a Google image search, and one of the top results was a particularly odd-looking image, so I clicked on it out of curiosity. It was at the top of an... article? on a webpage I'd never heard of, and the opening of said article included the sentence, "In medieval bestiaries and art, the manticore was depicted with unique features such as paws, teeth, and fur." You don't say there, bud.)
Interestingly, the D&D manticore is slightly different from the description in an additional way.
Tumblr media
Instead of a scorpion tail, it has a tail covered in spines. This has apparently been part of the D&D manticore since the beginning -- the above image is from 2e, but the 1e version had the same tail. (I just didn't use it because it's not as clear in the picture.)
Now, scroll back up to that Ashmole Bestiary image. The one where the tail doesn't really look anything like a scorpion's. Looks... similar to this in broad concept.
I doubt that Gygax or Arneson or whoever designed that aspect of their manticore after one bestiary image, so I popped over to bestiary.ca to see what else was out there. Out of the 38 medieval manticore images collected on that website, there are only two with a tail covered in spikes: the Ashmole manticore and one other that's clearly just a less-skilled artist working from the same image (it also has the same hat). Looking at the text sources, though:
"...it has a tail like a land scorpion, in which there is a sting; it darts forth the spines with which it is covered instead of hair..." -- Aristotle, De animalibus
"To the end of its tail is attached the sting of a scorpion, and this might be over a cubit in length; and the tail has stings at intervals on either side." -- Aelianus, On the Characteristics of Animals
Okay, that's the D&D version, mystery solved. New question: is it a coincidence that the Ashmole illustration fits Aelianus's description? Remember, the page is missing from the Aberdeen bestiary and the Ashmole bestiary isn't translated. The text comes from Bodley MS 764, which does not have a spiky-tailed manticore. My Latin is terrible and I'm untrained in palaeography, so I can't tell whether the entry there preserves the spiky description.
If any palaeographers out there want to solve this one for me, it's Bodleian MS Ashmole 1511, f.22v-23r, available digitally here. (I'll put some screenshots below, but I expect it's easier to zoom properly on the library's digitized manuscript.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, that's all I've got. Enjoy your week everyone.

I am currently at the beach and this has gotten me thinking about Mermay, and I had some thoughts on what type of aquatic animals each of the TF2 mercs (plus Pauling, Admin, and Saxton Hale) would be. Here are my ideas so far:
Scout - Fourwing Flying fish
Soldier - Bull Shark
Pyro - Weedy Seadragon
Demoman - Black Marlin or Porcupine Pufferfish

Engineer - Hardhead Catfish
Medic - Giant Moray Eel
Sniper - Common Lionfish or Banded Archerfish
Spy - European Common Cuttlefish
Miss Pauling - Sea Angel or Dumbo Octopus

TPWCH Fun Facts Day 5
The TPWCH cast is a diverse bunch!
(See Day 4 for clarification on Cepholing geography terms.)
Inklings
Three is half Mexinkan and a quarter Colorombian (Colombian)
Pearl is three-quarters Frensh (French)
Four has white ancestors from a smattering of European countries, but her family has lived in Inkopolis for four generations.
Cap’n Cuttlefish is Japanese, Callie is 1/4 Japanese, and Marie is 3/4 Japenese
Octolings
Octolings are generally very multiracial, likely due to the randomly arranged marriages which don’t take race into account. Still, Octolings that are closer to each other are more likely to be matched, so most Octolings can trace their roots back to a general area. However, once DJ Octavio started his campaign to steal the Zapfish, drafted soliers from all ovet the world were sent to Octo Valley and Octo canyon, which is why we see displaced Octolings from all over the world in Inkopolis right now.
Seyu is South Beigean (Asian, see edit to Day 4) with a bit of Southeast Beigean.
Leo is Black and traces his roots back to Domininka and Haitinks, as well as traces of other Caribbean countries.
Yuki is East Beigean, mostly Japenese and Ankorean (Korean)
Jeluva is East Afishcan
Eight has no idea where he is from or what his parents were like. His pale skin tone was chosen to make him appear skeletal and somewhat sickly to reflect the events in the Metro. He eventually gains some more color when he’s finally exposed to the sun regularly, but staying isolated in Three’s apartment still isn’t quite doing it yet. His skin tone also sets up a contrast with Seyu’s, which has very warm undertones that reflect the sunshine and happiness he’s found on the Surface leading up to the start of TPWCH. Basically, Eight needs more sun.
Mi Hogar Eres Tú
A bunch of the characters are racebent in MHET! Some examples:
El Capitán Jibión, Callie and Marie are Argentintian rather than Japenese [and they use the voseo!]
Pearl and Marina are both Colorombian.
Cuatro is Spanish.

Activity 2: Billingsgate Fish Market & Borough Market
Part 1: Billingsgate Fish Market
Grey Mullet is an oily fish and bottom feeder, which can give it a negative reputation of tasting fishy or muddy, but as long as it is fresh it makes an inexpensive and delicious protein. Because of its oiliness, it is more forgiving of being overcooked and it can hold its own against flavourful sauces, just pay attention to its many small bones. 2. Whelks are sea snails that have been a traditionally important food in many seaside European areas. In Britain they are often served boiled, in a vinegar dressing or with butter, as a sort of bar snack, whereas in France and Spain they are typically served with aioli. In both Portugal and Korea they are canned. However, they don’t have to be served plain, they can also be stir fried or battered for something different. Recipe: https://www.lovenorwichfood.co.uk/recipe/sherry-battered-whelks/.

3. Langoustines, Dublin Bay Prawns, or Scampi as they are often called in the UK are small crustaceans in the lobster family. While scampi in North America is typically shrimp in a garlicky white wine-butter sauce served over pasta, scampi in Europe typically refers to the cooked tails of the langoustine in many preparations. Most common on British menus is breaded scampi, usually served with chips and Tartar sauce. Recipe: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/scampi-tartare-sauce

4. Monkfish is a type of anglerfish and has evolved over time from discard to restaurant darling. Its original reputation as a second-rate fish was likely due to its hideous looks, but beneath that frightening exterior hides mild, succulent flesh that has sometimes been called “poor man’s lobster” although the price has risen significantly. In the market it was sold headless, with the skin peeled back to reveal the white flesh of the loins and tail. The boneless fillets are adaptable to a number of cooking styles, but the flavour is delicate and can be masked by strong sauces. The firm texture of the flesh will hold up to methods such as grilling or roasting. In France it is often served in soups, whereas Japanese restaurants, the liver, referred to as ‘ankimo’ is prized, and many are exported from Britain. 5. Throughout the market we saw displays of cuttlefish cloaked in messy black ink, and one of the highlights of the trip for me was getting to break down a cuttlefish under instruction from CJ Jackson. Cuttlefish is similar to squid in taste and texture, and the ink sacs in its mantle are also highly valued for cooking. Much of the cuttlefish catch is exported to places like Spain and Portugal, but just like squid it is delicious quickly fried, sautéed, or stir fried, or slowly braised. Its neutral flavour makes it adaptable for a variety of cuisines, and both the mantle, cut into strips, and the tentacles can be eaten, though the tentacles are typically slow cooked. One of the most popular preparations for squid and cuttlefish in England is to batter or crumb and fry it, both in the style of the Mediterranean as calamari and Chinese-style salt and pepper squid/cuttlefish. Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Octo Expansion is the 'vacation' Agent 3 and Cap'n Cuttlefish are on, which is referenced within the base game's single-player campaign. The events of the Octo Expansion story mode takes place at the same time as the base game's story does. Octo Expansion DLC Main article: Octo Expansion This mode is set in Octo Canyon, a place similar to Octo Valley from the first game. The Squid Sisters Stories mention the snow globe DJ Octavio was imprisoned in is shattered and Cap'n Cuttlefish's shack is smashed. Callie and the Great Zapfish have disappeared and Marie recruits the player, designated Agent 4, to storm Octo Canyon to search for them. The events of the story mode take place two years after the completion of the first game's Octo Valley mode, while Cap'n Cuttlefish is on vacation with Agent 3. For the European version, the game was also localized to Dutch, German, Italian and Russian. Each version has its own translations of the game, even with slight differences between the North American/Oceanian and European versions' English, French, and Spanish translations. Previously, Oceania received the European version of the first Splatoon before receiving the North American version of this game.

The purpose of the three versions is to separate region-based content such as Splatfests, especially ones containing advertisements.

The game was first teased on 20 October 2016 during the reveal trailer for the Nintendo Switch and released worldwide on 21 July 2017.
