Eurovision 2004 - Number 44 - Rūta Ščiogolevaitė - "Over"
This isn't Rūta Ščiogolevaitė's first dance at a Lithuanian national final, but this is the beginning of a remarkable run of five entries over the next twelve years in which she is never out of the top five. Who is Rūta? From the age of 14, she's been taking singing lessons at a conservatoire in Vilnius. She's been touring and singing all over the world throughout her student years. She's been collaborating with other Lithuanian musicians and singing backing vocals. By 2004, she was on the cusp of becoming one of the more well-known singers in Lithuania.
In 1999, she took part in the first Lithuanian national selection show, but on that occasion she didn't make it into the top four. After five years refining her craft, she's back with a song written by the same group of Estonians who are also busy writing songs for Euro Laul this year...
Over is power pop that at times threatens to deploy some of the hooks of Call Me Maybe seven years before that song was written, but backs off that into a 1980s-infused vocal showcase for Rūta. She's got it. Even if she's pushing her voice to the limits of the power notes it can handle, she's proves she can sing this material with confidence. She is a performer who knows how to handle a stage. The magnitude of her presence far exceeds everyone else in Eurovizijos Atranka this year.
The jury wanted her. They placed her first of all the acts. However, the televote were besotted with a big name band and quirkier performances. They placed her fifth leaving her in a three-way tie for first place.
I have no idea what the tie-break rule was. The act that came third was the one the televoters wanted. Rūta was the judges choice and came second. The act that came second with both won the tie-break. It may well have been decided by running order with the earlier performance winning. Rūta lost to the the ultimate compromise candidate, and subsequently Lithuania finished 16th in the first Eurovision semi-final.
Eurovizijos Atranka this year was her launch pad. By 2007, and her next appearance in the national final, she had been voted Lithuania's Brightest Star and had the biggest radio hit of that year. Despite all this success Rūta never won Eurovizijos Atranka. She hasn't represented Lithuania at Eurovision and remains of the bigger national final secrets. Her last attempt came in 2016 (after declaring in 2011 she wouldn't return) by which time she'd been a judge on the Lithuanian X Factor, won the Lithuanian Masked Singer and has been a mentor on the Lithuanian Voice.

Eurovision 2024 - Meet the Malmö Participants
🇱🇹 Lithuania - Silvester Belt - "Luktelk"
Music has been an integral part of Silvester’s life since he was a child.
His songs are inspired by personal life experiences, particularly drawing upon his memories of exploring his sexuality in a homophobic environment growing up, and how the suppression of those emotions affected him deeply.
Luktelk (translation: ‘wait’/’hold on’) is about being stuck in limbo between two stages of barely existing and feeling alive, when you have to hold on and dance through whatever life throws at you.
Silvester also competed in Vaikų Eurovizijos Nacionalinė Atranka - Lithuania’s pre-selection competition for Junior Eurovision in 2010.

The Lithuanians
Lithuania usually go through a long process to get to one act standing. This year there hasn’t been such a large selection process; 4 heats and 2 semi final. This weekend is the final and they have brought down there entrants to a neat collection of 8 songs.
"Run with the Lions" Jurijus I’m not sure how I like it. It travels okay, the falsetto is impressive and I like his voice. I’m just not sure if it is memorable in a crowd.
"Mažulė" Antikvariniai Kašpirovskio Dantys A Lithuanians joke entry. The ethnic music and the high choreographed number is really addictive. Not sure I like the song itself.
"Criminal" Monika Marija Ballad. Monica’s voice is exceptionally wonderful. Watching her sing like I am possessed. Blown away with what a great song it is and how well it is being performed.
"Sing!" Jurgis DID & Erica Jennings Husband and wife represented Lithuania seperately, now trying together. Don’t send this, it’s awful.
"Light On" Monika Marija As if one song was not enough, she has a second song. This is about as good as the other one. Monika’s voice is used more impressively on this one. It has a happier tone.
"CTRL ALT DELETE" Jurgis Brūzga Urban Lithuania; highly choreographed number which works very well. Jurgis doesn’t have an exceptional voice, but the song doesn’t need it.
"Strength of a Woman" Justina Budaitė-Junà This is good too. It’s sort of Beyonce light. The choreography makes it pop, voice and music very good.
"Neverpart" Henry & Tommy Modric Don’t choose this. It’s simple and sung by two blokes and I don’t know if they are singing it to each other. If they are, sing something better.
CONCLUSION
Quite an entertaining collection of songs other than two songs that are just bad. I really like Monica Marija and if I was to choose between them, I’d go with Criminal over Light on. If any of the other four come through, I’d be okay with it too.

Goodnight sweeties, and to sign off my posts that I will make today in my blog, I’m going to post this that is just a bit gpoy lyricwise at least:
I just cannot breathe, I just cannot fight
Save me, I’m dying, I’m dying inside
I just wanna scream, I just wanna cry
Save me, I’m dying, I’m dying inside

Eurovision 2002 - Number 30 - Rūta Lukoševičiūtė - "Hello"
Eurovizijos Atranka 2002 was only the third Lithuanian national final and already it has developed its own, idiosyncratic style. It's refreshingly varied, with acts you just wouldn't find in other national finals - even if the quality of those acts is patchy.
An example of this is perennial Lithuanian hopeful Rūta Lukoševičiūtė. 2002 is her second attempt after falling well short in 2001. After this she tried three more times throughout the 2000s, and after that, she turned to songwriting with more entries in the early 2010s. She's famous not so much for singing but writing, voicing and presenting Lithuania's premier comedy hidden camera show VRS Kamera.
Hello demonstrates her raspy singing style and laconic stage presence, with tale of a man who likes living by himself just fine. He's so OK with his mess, solitary life that he's reluctant to answer Rūta's incessant phone calls. Just let him be Rūta! It's a simple song delivered in an arresting magenta ensemble that would be hectoring if it weren't for the mid-1990s guitar setting that lends an accelerating intensity and allows us to feel that we're going somewhere. It's fun and even if the build doesn't quite get there, the air of light-hearted criticism and complaint feels distinctly British.
Given her long history of entering Eurovizijos Atranka and writing songs for it, Rūta Lukoševičiūtė may well appear again in my top 48s, although the fifth place finish that this song achieved is her best result in the national final by quite some margin. She did release an album off the back of this songs and also took part in other music festivals around Europe including in Italy and Türkiye

Samanta Tina - “Still breathing”
THOUGHT I’D NEVER GET UP?
THOUGHT I GONNA GIVE UP?
LOST IN MY WAYS
MANY TIMES BETWEEN
BUTT STEEL BREEDIN’
I’M STEEL BREEDIN’
NOTHIN’ TO REGRET
NEVER LOOKIN’ BACK
Song Analysis
Apparently 13th is the highest my conscience will let me rank “Still breathing” because LMFAO this song is AWFFFFULLLLL.
Is this take a surprise? Let’s be honest. Samanta Tina does NOT do good quality music, babes. Samanta Tina does whatever the fuck Samanta Tina wants and we... well some of us love her for it I suppose, but I mostly just look at her works, ye mighty and despair.
So of course when she showed up in Supernova, I was obviously extremely cautious because ‘Cutting the wire’ was so woeful it gave me fucking night terrors. But it looked like she was co-operating with Aminata, so maybe she could channel pure Aiste Pilvelyte and erupt in an outcry of I’M LIKE VVOOLF.
Except, SURPRISE Aminata was merely the lyricist and Samanta composed the instrumentation herself: A literal chain of camel farts and klaxon noises that served as an amplifier for Samanta Polakova, Feminist Extra-Ordinaire PATHOLOGICAL NARCISSIST SAMANTA DEMON. 😍😍😍😍😍 Lmfao at the entire “female empowerment angle” btw. “Still Breathing” empowers exactly one woman, and that’s Samanta herself . The song’s actual purpose is to give a subtle middle finger to the country that spat her out at least seven times, but she obviously can’t say that out loud so she quickly created some pseudofeminist narrative to cover it up <3
Then 2020s signature Freak Factor struck and she won Supernova when her international fans hijacked the internet vote. It totally caught me off-guard, like, Samanta is going to Eurovision? “Do I actually have to... rank this piece of shit song and analyze her chances in earnest?” 🙄 “At least she’s amusingly shit, I guess”
As we all know, most ironic love eventually becomes unironic. I can’t exactly pinpoint when it clicked for me, so I’ll just post the lot of them. SAMANTA GIFS INCOMING:
THE KRUMPING
THE POSTURING
THE WHATEVER THIS IS.
MARVEL UPON HER CRAZY-EYED DESPERATION
BECAUSE SHE’S GONNA BLOOOOOOOOOOOW
LOOKING FOR THE STARS
CUZ YOU KNOW I’M GETTING CLOSER
LIFE IS MUSIC
~I aM a CoMpOsUr~
Samanta Tina may be famewhore deluxe, but by Daði she does not give A SINGLE FLYING FUCK what people think about her, as long as she gets to do whatever it is she wants to do, and gets to do it in front of as many people as possible. <3 She’s the type of narcista who pursues attention not because she thinks she’s better than everyone else, but because she wants to be an inspiration in the lives of as many people as possible. 💫
In sum, I love Samanta for her fucking Samantaness, and since “Steel breeding” is the most evocative of her signature components (defeaning loudness, palpable egocentrism, pretentious locomotion, insane asylum energy), I am obliged to love it too by default. 😍
Europe had better be ready because A BLOOD MOON WILL BE RISING and... omg 😍 I cannot wait to get to ranking that, somewhere near the end of April 2022. (lol I realize this post will go online AFTER ‘The moon is rising’ has been released but can’t be bothered changing it, chickens!!)
NF CORNER
Supernova 2020 really feels like an EXTREMELY distant memory that I only have vague recollections on, so I suppose I’ll cover the three entries I can remember liking?
MADARA - “Maras Zeme”
EPIC HIPPIE QUEEN <3333333 I had completely forgotten that 2020 had a few CRAZY ASS environmental fundie anthems, channelling pure Greta Thunberg from every orfice. “Maras Zeme” is less insane than some of the other green garbo ahead of us (“Pich” 😍 “La-Ley-La” 😍), but Madara suddenly swerving into English, lecturing us on how MOTHER HAS CARED FOR US is a fucking wig-snatching moment that should have earned her a spot in the finale line-up WTF!!!
Katrina Dimanta - “Heart beats”
The cute chubby member of Aarzemnieki showing up in a folk version of Emiliana Torrini’s “Jungle drum” 😍 and of course Katrina effortlessly won the Latvian-exclusive televote because Latvia were *never* picking Samanta without her crazed stans hijacking the app vote. 😍
ANNNA - “Polyester”
Samanta almost completely passed me by in Supernova because I was (and still am!) a committed member of #TeamPolyester. Socially-conscieous Dutch queen with an anti-sweatshop anthem. 😍 And despite the obvious gimmick subject, surprisingly competent too as a standalone indie song? Let the Annna gifs commence:
SO PRETTY! NO PITY!
TEE SHIRTS
IN ALL THE COLOURS
NEED MORE
WHAT WILL I WEAR NEXT SUMMER?
NEED MORE,
FANTASIZE,
HEY NEXT SEASON
TIME TO BUY
FREAKY! FRIDAY! FACTOR!
The ‘Samanta Tina Tale of Many NF Fails’ is something I would LOVE to recap now, but given that another Samanta write-up is inbound for April, I’d rather wait until then, lol. However, I do love how Samanta’s 37 participations in Supernova, Dziesma and Eurovizijos Atranka, made her enough of a cult fave to win a Supernova which was not only set up for her to win, but she would have LOST had it not been for the internet vote. 😍 Add in the inherent Samantaness of her being, and you have a serve of High Adrenaleen:
Score: 5 Senhits out of five.
