SNOW DAY!
Because of inclement winter weather, Special Collections, along with the rest of the university, will be closed today. Some of us will be working from home, while others might use this opportunity to take a snow day and enjoy the time off (although to be honest it looks pretty bleak out there right now). Nevertheless, with the expectation that it might turn into a full-on winter wonderland, we offer this children's book from our Historical Curriculum Collection: Josie and the Snow by American educator and children's author Helen E. Buckley (1918-2001), with Illustrations by American artist Evaline Ness (1911-1986), published in New York by Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co. in 1964.
Buckley's story is pleasantly simple: a family's day-long rollick in the snow. Ness matches this simplicity with illustrations informed by her career in commercial artwork. Helen Buckley began her career as an elementary school teacher, earned a doctorate in education from Columbia University, and was an English professor at the State University College of New York at Oswego when she wrote this book.
After a long career as a fashion illustrator and model, Evaline Ness began illustrating children's books in 1951. She was at the height of her children's illustration career when she illustrated Jose and the Snow, receiving Caldecott Honors in 1964, 1965, and 1966, and finally receiving the 1967 Caldecott Medal for her own book, Sam, Bangs & Moonshine. The name "Ness" might sound familiar, as she had a colorful, 5-year marriage to Eliot Ness of "The Untouchables" fame.

So I have a fun game I like to play
You remember the game of pasting a piece of text into Google translate, translating that into a foreign language and translating it back to English and laughing at the results?
This is the new version of that!
I take a photo of myself
Tumblr media
Then I run it through Clip Interrogator
The AI of Clip Interrogator analyzes the photo and describes it.
The result it gave me is as follows:
A woman wearing a black hat and glasses, inspired by Evaline Ness, reddit, lowbrow, jessica nigri face!!, beautiful cowboy witch, about 35 years old, in style of chrome hearts, grainy. poorly rated, new mexico with a yellow filter, with cobwebs, wearing angel halo, dark fae, gandalf as a woman, me
Then I copied and pasted that description into the text entry on an AI image generator
I use LisaAI
And here is the resulting picture!
Tumblr media
Yup that's certainly me!
The beautiful cowboy witch

Two of my favourite books read this year: ✴️ The 13 Clocks, by James Thurber This one was recommended in the Neil Gaiman's masterclass and did not disappoint. I especially like this beautiful edition illustrated by Marc Simont. ✴️ Ronja the Robber's Daughter, by Astrid Lindgren Ronja was my first excursion into Lindgren country and it won't be the last. My next will be 'The Brothers Lionheart', already on my to-be-read shelf. Among others, I also enjoyed - the work of Evaline Ness, especially for the picture book 'Coll and his white pig' as well as the Chronicles of Prydain book covers, all by author Lloyd Alexander. I bought the whole chronicles book set for myself this Christmas, looking forward to reading what seems to be a great classic. - the newsletter of @austinkleon which I recently subscribed to. I bought two of his books that I'm excited to read for the new year, to put myself in a nice mind frame. If you've got good books (or things) that you've enjoyed this year please leave a comment, I'd love to know ! Have a lovely weekend — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/uKIPBDa

In The Book of Three, we learn that it takes a month to journey from Caer Dallben to Caer Dathyl. Going by that, and the map of Evaline Ness for The High King, we can see that the most direct land route from Caer Dallben to the Eastern Strongholds would also likely take a month. However, that route would go across the Great Avren, northeast through the Free Commots, Medwyn's Valley, and the Realm of the Fair Folk.
But the most direct route from Caer Dathyl to the Eastern Strongholds would probably take about 2-2.5 weeks. This would go through the Eagle Mountains, and potentially through some of the Northern Realms.
However, Gwydion and Math knew of a secret path that would take only a week to get to the Eastern Strongholds. They showed it to Gwyneira in order to prepare her in case she ever needed to evacuate and lead the women and children to safety.
By the time it came to act on this knowledge, both Arianllyn and Gwyneira had sensed treachery and danger coming, so they knew it was better to act first and ask questions later. And it was only because of their foresight and quick work that they were able to get all the women and children who would go with them ready and on the road to the Eastern Strongholds before Pryderi arrived.
Because of the secret path that her uncles had showed her, they were able to avoid ambushes and potential attacks by marauders, traitors, Huntsmen, and Cauldron-Born that would have been unavoidable on the main route. They arrived safely at the Eastern Strongholds the day before Pryderi reached Caer Dathyl.

“If all you young men were hares on the mountain, how many young girls would take guns and go huntin’?” (x)
i have so much homework to do so the rational thing to do is of course make a small vent piece inspired by Evaine Ness’ style and a Shirley Collins song.
