as someone who never read HS2 and would vote for latula over any strider i can say some people definitely just always saw the striders as incredibly lame. however all my impressions of the characters have been influenced deeply by kinnies so you decide which is worse

Dead Weight by squirtgunplay || rated M || 5/9 || 27337 words - oh that fic. oh my god. love me some zombie apocalypse au with existential horror sprinkled on top. hal and dirk are twins but with a twist in this one. theres mystery. theres injuries that make you incapable of moving around. theres ship of theseus discussion. its nourishing. its beautiful. jake and hals banter in this one is fucking amazing, and the author captures their characters so well. the relationship between hal and dirk is also very fucking good and heartwrenching and just ugh. stellar writing, the forth wall break made me laugh out loud, hal gets called a security camera (derogatory). theres graphic depictions of violence, so beware of the tags.

Tennessee Whiskey & You by MistLaFey || rated T || 5/? || 12217 words - major character death and graphic depictions of violence tagged, so beware and read the tags. no-sburb au. dirk fucking dies (its in the fic description so i dont feel like its a spoiler). beautiful exploration of grief, unhealthy coping mechanisms and trying to get back into the normal life when theres a big part of it suddenly missing. hal and dirk are twins. jake is not doing well. hal is also not doing well, but pretending he is. its heartbreaking and some scenes made my chest hurt. very good fic and i dont understand why it doesnt get more love. it deserves it. go read it, even just for the funeral scene, i got teary-eyed over it.

seconds by squirtgunplay || rated E || 2/2 || 18698 words - graphic depictions of violence and its no joke, presidential alert the girls are fightinnn!! but its also so funny and the authors so funny and its also really hot! no sburb au, hals a human and dirks twin. he gets kidnapped by a craigslist hitman jake who mistakes him for dirk. the banter is top game in this one. hal cant keep his mouth shut even in life or death situation. jakes a dork, but hes a deadly dork, and also cant keep his mouth shut about his personal problems. theres fistfighting and knifethrowing and hal gets a weapon put to his head at least twice and he thinks its pretty damn hot. theres banging in second chapter. what more can i say to sell you on this one. the characters are on point, the action is tense but its also written in a cheeky, fun way, smut is good, a npc gets unsubscribed from life. amazing fic, 10/10, will read it again.

I Think Therefore I AR by Taxi_Boy || rated T || 25/? || 30417 words - im saving the best for last. major character death. hal has to start the game and get his friends into the medium while dirk is missing, while also pretending to be dirk as to not raise their suspicions. im not going to say anymore about the plot, you just have to go and read the fic. genuinely my favourite jakehal - and homestuck in general - fic of all time. i love caliborn in this one. i cant wait to see what the author has cooked up for us in the future. its plainly genious.

so im definitely going to keep the themes of the cherubs characters, i.e. representing the fandom, but kind of like, theyre still not necessarily not still the things that they are.

caliborn is now the fandom's passion, but also somewhat their...all-encompassing presence in the early fandom days. constant bucket jokes, "let me tell you about homestuck," the fake stories where the cop read homestuck, their presence at cons. its passion! its a positive reaction to homestuck, but its kind of overwhelming and is "cringe." caliborn kind of struggles to treat the alpha kids as...other people, rather than characters. but he...DOES want to kind of push everyone into a "happy ending" and have everyone he ships to HOLD HANDS ALREADY.

on the opposite side, calliope represents fandom antipathy and criticism. shes always questioning WHY certain "writing choices" were made, even if in-universe these writing choices are simply. choices. that the characters around her made. deeply critical and humiliated by her brothers antics, her goal is not to destroy homestuck, but to make something *better* from its ashes. shes kind of like. the shame ex-homestucks feel. the thing with swap!calliope is that you do still sympathize with her on some level. shes frustrated and just *sad* that she cant let the story go. on some levels shes similar to alt!callie from canon, just angrier.

She genuinely believes that she not only can but deserves to be the hero of every story and also the machiavellian puppeteer engineering the problems for her to then swoop in and solve. She dies to her own hubris of course but then comes back and continues it in a new and exciting way. I havent had any coffee yet but if you want more examples I would suggest reading Homestuck because really the whole story is sort of her fault; Genuinely one of the best characters ever. Horrible person. Peak hubris

She is so, so convinced that she can do anything that she doesn't even stop to think if it might fail. Her best friend has to kill her about it; Vriska. Invented hubris, really.

Attempts to sacrifice himself to keep the world running bc he has decided to take on full responsibility for all the hurt in the world, despite the fact that multiple people (including the one who created the world and the one who drives it forward) tell him it was not his responsibility? Check. Thinks he can trick his family into leaving him behind by giving them only a piece of himself? Check; He literally can pick up a stick and the world reinvents itself to create a story called “Kim Dokja and a Stick.” He learns nothing from this.

constantly girlbossing too close to the sun. he annoys the dangerous, very easy to piss off Protagonist™ at every opportunity. he talks down to the Extremely Powerful Beings that put him & the entire rest of the world into giant death game arenas, and he has gotten into trouble for it. he uses the standard isekai cheats to make himself overpowered, but then the Extremely Powerful Beings (which he has pissed off) use that as an excuse to up the danger level for *everyone*. he makes enemies at every turn. he's died multiple times, sometimes on purpose because he knows he'll come back. (i'm a webtoon reader and a little behind so i don't know the full extent of what he does, but he's done enough already.); i wouldn't be surprised if the ending of the novel includes him getting so op he simply explodes into dust

homestuck is one of the best pieces of media of all time for plurality and i fuckin mean it. no shot do not pass go i have NEVER seen anything that is more built from the ground up to Support plural reads. like, to the point where it feels impossible to read homestuck without it.

as a work dealing with two huge primary themes of a) finding yourself/identity/growing up, and b) ideas coming to life, plurality is pretty much the Perfect intersection between the two of them. like.

take rose for example.

rose is plural and it's great.

when the doomed timeline evaporates, future dream rose does not actually "cease to exist." she ceases to exist as her own person -- her memories, experiences, personality, thoughts (or, as shorthand, her selfstuff) all flows back into rose prime. and that experience is just something rose has to roll with. one becomes two -- that other rose is still in her mind.

jade's plural and it's great.

when her dream self awakens as jadesprite, jade has a horrific argument with her. if you're plural i'm sure you understand. fighting with an age-regressed version of you, stuck in a traumatic past, who WONT FUCKING LISTEN -- we've all . been there.

she has involuntary barks, she can't stop seeing images of fire, she wants to go back to nonexistence but she doesnt want to die and it's torture,

and then in cascade, jade fuses with her.

dream jade is still in there. that part of her she has to grapple with is still real. her dog who she loves is in there, too -- but, yknow. woof

then grimbark gets forcefully introjected into her. i've seen a few fics play with the idea that the grimbark personality is still residually there (read ygtpoasu), but it's not a huge thing that's explored in the text. more backgrounded. but still! her crisis of identity is in there.

tavros's plurality is like, a pretty big factor in his character!!!! it's one of the bigger points vriska uses to bully him with (because she's projecting because she's projecting because she's projecting, because she's also plural and kins mindfang), it's like. a big thing that he has to cope with and figure out.

kanaya suggested tavros treat his self-confidence as his own brain guy, like, completely sincerely. she genuinely thought it would help, and it sorta did!!!!!

it is FAR from the only positive example of plurality in the comic.

okay, you do homestuck, right? ive got this project idea in the works. basically, its homestuck, but thematically inverted. i havent actually finished homestuck, but I made it a long way in, to around Dirk's Derse Coup. i have some questions if you dont mind.

first of all, ive observed thus far that Homestuck id about discarding yourself. characters gradually lose defining traits and get closer to the platonic ideals of their classpects. strife specibi seem to represent that which ails our heroes. to become a god, you must sacrifice your earthly waking body on a magic bed, succumbing to an endless sleep to live forever within a dream. for my version, I wanted to do the opposite, having characters become more of themselves instead of less, and kill their dreamselves to truly "wake up," but first i need to know if these observations are actually valid if you read the whole story, and more generally, how valid is this idea?

any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Now let me preface this by saying: You can do anything at all. You're not restricted by anything other than your own creativity, and largely speaking, so long as you think it's cool/works, any approach is valid. Similarly, Death of the Authro, yadda yadda, there's all manner of divergent readings on a text. So anything regarding personal projects is really largely up to the taste of the author.

That being said, if you're asking me on my take on this theme in the text of Homestuck, I'd say that while you've definitely noticed one of the Big Themes of Homestuck, I'd argue the way Homestuck goes about it is the inverse- Taking the 'Platonic Ideal' of a character, while some characters that achieve Ultimate Self status are in fact better off, namely the Sprites or those sidelined in some way, the loss of self that comes with it is largely showcased as a Bad Thing in the instance of those who already were more important/relevant to the main cast. Even then, and while intrinsically tied to their Classpect, the characters still have their own particular spins on the Classpects- A Classpect is too broad a concept to have a singular 'Platonic Ideal', just as often times the Platonic Ideal of their character can contain contradictions in the 'whole' of their existence!

Homestuck is, first and foremost, a Coming of Age story about Teens growing up into Adulthood, with all the pain, trauma and baggage of carrying the legacy of their world, and their families, on their shoulders, in one way or another. SBURB wants the characters to go through an Arc, develop, and become worthy gods, but as we see time and time again, this is not always necessarily in a character's best interest, and the idea of the Self, what makes you You, if you're still You as time passes, as your body changes, as you become something metaphysically completely detached from what you used to be, and how this affects your interpersonal relationships and your relationship to the world around you, is far more complex than simply 'discarding traits to become closer to your Classpect's Platonic Ideal'.

You succumb to sleep in the Quest Bed, but simultaneously, you do wake up as your Dream Self. Whether you take this as being taken by this Platonic Dream, or truly Waking Up to the true nature of your existence, that's a matter of taste and views. Likewise, this doesn't make the characters that didn't God Tier or die and become their Dream Self any less likely to undergo changes to their Self and 'wake up' in their own right.

It's a complex story! It tackles a lot of themes of the self, agency, growing up and the like, and that is always messy. Some are happier becoming something else. Some cling to what they were. Some were always hiding what they truly were. Some are still figuring out. And that's fine. The metaphysics of SBURB are a device to explore the different ways all of this affects the characters! So the most important thing I'd say is less the validity of the observation in regards to an Inverted Version of Homestuck based on your views, and more:

How would this scenario affect the characters differently, and what new hurdles/feelings/predicaments would this create in their development and the story?

actually thats why ive been censoring swears in comics lately because the tmnt fandom comes across to me as a little young...IDK I've had MULTIPLE people ask me what "sodomize" means because of the joke in this post and I'm like... I Cannot be the one to explain this to you. you have to look it up on your own klfsdhsdg like i wouldn't be doing this if i were doing a comic for mgs or even homestuck wherein the characters textually swear constantly LOL but sometimes u gotta change tacks depending on the faces u see in the crowd yknow.

i HAVE been thinking abt drawing nsfw of sunspot/richard rider/kobak from x-men red just because that comic seemed to be really asking for it. who knows.. if the need rly arises maybe my separate account policy will change.

its rly more a matter of the fact that i havent read/watched much of any other iterations... im sure id like most lol. I like most things related to my interests regardless of quality. i rly like the marvel ultimate alliance games for instance. sometimes seeing my fave guy is enough he doesnt have to be well written LOL. i dont exactly have a wealth of free time tho thats the real impediment.

i did watch the 2007 movie on new years eve and found it quite charming overall. and i have read about 30-40 issues between the mirage and idw comics. still feels like im barely scratching the surface but i liked em. i rly want to read all the sophie campbell stuff bc i think her work is interesting. jason aaron will be a mixed bag i think lmao. i say as the worlds biggest Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) fan.

hmm this is kinda hard bc i feel like i naturally draw very loose and the hard part for me is tightening it up. maybe some suggestions tho...

1) hand excercises. i think its easy to forget this when many artists sit in front of the computer all day but drawing is a physical activity u do with ur actual...bodys...muscles lol. if u feel urself tightening up it might help to strech (any google search for "artist hand excercises" should yield good results) or do a page of loose practice strokes like..big circles. long lines. scribbles. that kinda thing. whatever feels good for ur hand. this is also just good to do as a general warm up before u sit down for any drawing sesh.

2) draw further away from the canvas. as a general rule...when ur painting traditionally you do the big strokes with your whole arm outstreched and a long handled brush. and when you do the details its smaller wrist movements and a shorter handled brush. so it might help to take a step back or push back from ur chair a little.. or hold ur tablet a little further away. and hold your pen further away from the nib.

3) change mediums / brush types. some brushes and mediums are more suited to loose sketching and some more inclined towards detail work. so changing ur tool could help. also! i personally have this problem where sometimes if im using a brush i feel really familiar with the pressure to make a "good" "finished" "perfect" drawing is greater... if i want to force myself to loosen up ill switch to a tool i dont use as often so it feels like the pressure is off. a lot of times for me this is switching from digital to traditional. but sometimes its switching from a small pen to a big marker. or a smooth pen to a textured one. or a nice brush to a shitty dried up marker.

but also every body is different so i dont think these tips will work for everyone. u should listen to what ur body and mind tell u and how drawing feels to you

well. scott mcclouds understanding comics and making comics are good books on the craft. i think i had to buy them for a class in art school once.

other than that idk just keep at it. comics are really laborious i think for a lot of people the hardest part is sitting down and doing it.

i think a lot of people have a very instinctive understanding of how to read comics and what they look like so whatever you think seems like good way to tell the story you have in mind, its probably right. if u get stuck, study comics that have done something similar. most people in comics are relatively self taught and actually it can be problematic bc you can tell when a lot of comic artists are all copying the same like 5 old white guys LMAO. but on the flip side if you make sure to reference and study broadly your comics will almost assuredly feel unique.

yes i loooove classpecting i actually used to classpect my ocs all the time during my peak homestuck phase (i would also get their mbti, zodiac signs, prolly some other shit, i was really into personality tests).

roy is a seer or heir tbh i cant choose. i think her aspect would be light. the double meaning of fortune and knowledge is just soooo perfect for her imo and she is def a passive class 1. because out of all of them she probably is the most altruistic even if its not an intentional thing aha and 2. she isnt very meddlesome. i think her effects on others around her are unintentional

kip i think is also a knight -- maaaybe a rogue but i feel like knight fits so well because of his need- moreso requiremennt -to protect others. his aspect is ABSOLUTELY breath this is another one that took no thought there is no other alternative.

tally was reaaaally fucking difficult for some reason but ive decidedd i like page of time for him. i think it makes sense for him to be kind of passive classwise and i love the implication of him having this huge mine of untapped power that might never be utilized. i think the exploitation part is good also.

ive read that pages may lack their aspect at the start of a session- i think that works really well for him + time is related to inevitably, timelines, fate, etc which i enjoy, i feel like it makes him the heart of the group in a way. it means hes needed :D

you may notice: they dont have a space aspect. their session is doomed. however! what if their lawyer/kips ex got in on the session.....

auggie is a mage of space i think. he is a knowledgey guy. and in a literal sense he is not a part of the main crew giving a sense of "space" ahhaha. i dont feel like saying much more about this one i think it fits great though.

this like. really isnt even about hs2 (in the sense i have literally not read the new stuff and do not really plan to for my own sanity. and also take into account i am mostly just taking my emotional issues out on homestuck because im feeling very raw about it and life lately.) but good god i just cannot stand the idea of letting this beast crawl out of the grave AGAIN. i respect some of the ppl working on the newest thing and ofc hope it doesnt devolve into harassment all over butttttttt also. how many times do we watch a monster reanimate itself. its like since the damn thing ended ive been yelling to anyone who will listen about how it needs to stay dead in the ground AT ALL COSTS!!!! it needs to die to give people a chance to truly learn from it. and in the same way my silly little cope back in the day of talking about hating hs sincerely while being very invested in it got muddled and twisted when ironically insulting your interests became like The Thing, i feel like everyone thinks i am being SILLY or HYPERBOLIC and i am NOT!!!!! it is not even about the content of post canon, for all of the problems i have with it, it really never Has been. There are parts of the epilogues i actually think are compelling and expansive but that is not part of the conversation to me. the entire precedent for why i feel how i do is that it is a fundamentally flawed and dishonest move to spend literal years antagonizing your audience, overlooking if not outright facilitating abuse and harassment in pockets where "audience" and "friend" and "writer" all became deeply enmeshed labels that emboldened people to endear themselves and their interpretations to whatever you projected as "rightness" at the expense of their peers. only to like... wipe your hands of it once it stopped being the means of which to make a ridiculous amount of internet dollars and started to be like an actual problem for you and the longevity of your reputation as a creative. it couldve been the best written shit in the world and that would never have made up for how bullshit of an idea of swearing "im not the boss of canon anymore guys" while literally Still continuing to make things that not only continue to establish a canonicity but that continue to undermine alternative readings of previous events is. sometimes i think about the whole sarah z lawsuit shit and wonder how everything didnt just dissolve afterwards but really isnt this just the perfect internetspace for people to get away with being that boldfaced about throwing legal threats around to stroke their own egos? havent we been reared from day one to care more for whether people are clever and haughty before we care about whether they are literally openly trying to exert control and harassment?
