YOUKAI AU LORE!!!!!
literally just copy pasted what i told ghost in dms no beta we die like men
ok so my youkai au... SO I started thinking about it first when I saw Evan post about theirs, and I saw they they said theirs was more of an isekai style? So like, kinda Inuyasha vibes?? Also mine isn't like... TOO tied into the real hesowar au, bc i dont really know all the canon information so its all just... headcanons and my own worldbuilding (which i love to do i love worldbuilding its what i did for my thesis in art school ANYWAYYYY)) So my thoughts are kinda that theres this youkai world and each of the boys are originally human brothers that were all possessed by the youkai like hundreds of years ago and are now all these 6 powerful youkai that rule over 6 different domains. I think that in each domain, or maybe where all 6 of them converge theres a portal to the human world that opens up? Maybe both.... 7 portals, the strongest one thats always open is in the middle of the domains, each has their own, and their own unique connection to the human realm. I think Ichi, because he's a 9 tailed kitsune, he's connected to like, a specific Inari shrine I think each of the boys excepts for one or two, have like... at least harems or a partner or something at this point? It's later in their lives, idk theyre still young looking WHATEVER IDK, but Ichimatsu hasn't really... expressed any interest in anyone in the realm, yet complains to like, jyushi specifically that he feels particularly lonely. Like none of the people who come to worship him in the realm do it for him, theyre boring, whatever, idk, no connections. And since he's a trickster, the brothers are like "ohhh youre kiniving and play pranks and tricks, why dont you just like, trick a human to to be your mate/bride/spouse, humans are so interesting and quirky" and at first hes like 'no thats fucked up i wouldnt do that' but the he thinks about it ...
SO MEANWHILE, in the human world, this version of Mao, i think, is just in some like... job to pass the time, but they're incredibly lonely, theyre bad at making connections at work, theyre a bit burnt out, just things arent going their way. So, one day on the way home they're just tired, and maybe the route they walk on to and from work is like closed so they take a different route and on their way home they come upon an entrance to a shrine, maybe its a little overgrown, but... somethng calls them in, and they walk up the little stairs and are kinda drawn up to the big donation box. And they kinda just throw a couple coins in and pray and think 'im really lonely, i want companionship but im not sure what to do anymore, maybe i should change careers or just ... change myself completeley ... i need guidance' And theres this voice in the back of their head thats just like 'what if that could come true' and 'give yourself to me' and 'make me more offerings and ill give you a deal you wont refuse' and mao thinks theyre hallucinating from stress but they just empty their coin purse bc theyre kinda compelled to And they realize when they blink a couple times, that THAT was all the money they had on them and still need to buy dinner, so they try to reach down into the donation box to maybe snag back a 500 yen coin but then they fall into the box, and the descent down is a LOT longer than they would have assumed it was, and they land down in there with a thud and look up and around them and now have to figure out how to climb out, and eventually, once they do, and climb up and out of the hole or whatever, they are NOT in that shrine anymore, but somehow in the middle of the forest
SO THEYRE LIKE 'uuhhhh ... what the fuck? Did i hit my head??' and are like 'haha probably hit my head and this is a dream or something' and they dust themself off and start making their way down a path in a random direction to maybe figure out what theyre dreaming about, and theyre walking walking, and SHWOOM, right in front of them flies an arrow and they like, jolt back cause it almost hit them, and theres like ... some kind of lower level like ... imps or goblins or like ... SOMETHING and start fucking chasing mao, because this is some like... you know... uhhh idk if it feudal era? i think thats the term. ANYWAY they have pink hair and are like 'woah this person must have insane magical powers we must kill them and take their magics' and so mao gets chased in the woods all the way to like, a cliffside, and are then cornered, and are like ??????? So since they think its a dream they think if they try hard enough maybe dream logic will work so they maybe jump? immediatley fall and stars screaming, but whats this, something catches them midair and they look up and see theyre in the arms of a man with big ears and pretty red makeup who then like, with the wave of a hand wipes out the imps and lands on the ground with mao in his arms and he finally looks down at them and they share like, locked eye contact for a few moments before hes like 'kind of dumb of you to jump off that cliff considering humans cant fly' AND I HAVE LIKE, some other story beats, but the like... summarized story is that ichi starts to feel guilty for kind of coercing mao to come here so they go on like, a journey together, him protecting them, but teaching them to fight and things, while they travel toward where the domains are converged to get mao into the portal back home, but along the way they both genuinely start to fall for one another and mao eventully gives themself to ichi as his devoted bride/partner/mate and gets like... some minor powers and stuff i thinks... and yeah... hehe..
... heheh yeah... i might wanna draw story beats... i have MORE ideas, like... beats and things that happen on the journey if people wanna hear about those too....
ALSO SOMETHING I NEED TO CLARIFY!! when i say the other boys have partners, its not like... its moreso meant to be like, OTHER PEOPLE who self ship with the other boys, have already claimed them, like... how do i make this make sense.... like ... timeline wise, if like
HYPOTHETICLLY, if you wanted to insert your s/i into MY version of this au specifically, your and the matsu's story would have happened BEFORE mao enters the picture if that makes sense... bc i like the idea of ichi being the last of the brothers to make a connection, only realizing once his brothers have found love, that he wants it too ... haha hehehehehehhehehehe the end

i havent watched smpearth OR empires and yet i am??? so invested in your au??? please take this ask as an invitation to say more, or completely disregard me if you dont want to :)
i am going to continue to use these excuses to talk about headcanons and worldbuilding for my silly au.
so let me tell you my somewhat self-indulgent history of the antarctic empire! it is somewhat well-documented and told, although some of the records are lost to time. or to philza. (remind me at some point that we WILL get back to philza.)
it goes like this: the pigmen, a species of sentient humanoid pigs, were dying. a mysterious disease was ravaging them, turning them into mindless beasts, and there seemed to be no cure. the surviving pigmen often had to flee the settlements they lived in, for staying near any of these zombified pigmen was dangerous, and the presence of a single one could poison the bunch.
a small group of these fleeing pigmen fled so far south that they found the antarctic. there, they discovered that the freezing cold that made it nearly impossible to grow crops or raise animals also killed the zombification disease in its tracks. it was a safe place for the pigmen to settle, and so they did; they built towns alongside ruins that must have been built by the gods, telling them where it would be safe to stay. the few others (of a handful of species) that already lived there, largely there to also study the antarctic stronghold, were folded in, and the antarctic empire was born.
interestingly, if you check historic records, there's a strong argument that can be made that philza was there when the pigmen arrived. but that's weird, right? can't possibly be true.
anyway.
the antarctic empire, for a while, struggled. food does not grow well in the antarctic, and something about the portal in the ancient stronghold outright prevented new animals from being born near it, rendering a lot of animal husbandry difficult. so, as the last survivors of the pigmen and the collection of people who lived with them grew into more of a nation, they were frequently plagued by starvation. they do a lot of fishing and hunting the few animals that did live near them, and eventually invented techniques to grow food inside.
however, that was, in their minds at least, not enough to sustain them, and hence the antarctic tradition of conquest began, in order to obtain resources they could not get in the arctic. after all, it was hard to raise animals there, but build weapons? they could build great machinery, to build weapons, and it turned out that pigmen are fairly decent at the art of war.
(there are some bitter parts of earth that comment that you can tell when a pigman somewhere was feeling a bit hungry, because there's a war going on. make of this what you will.)
the antarctic empire grew into a power despite its food problems, largely thanks to a tradition of leadership that is good at warfare. however, it is also, perhaps, a bit thanks to the mysterious technology and records left behind by whatever people build the ancient stronghold. if you ask most pigmen, they'll say the gods. if you ask techno in public, he'll say that too. if you ask him in private, he'll say something about how some people have to learn their lessons about hubris. if you ask phil? he won't answer at all.
anyway, the antarctic empire is still in its state of near-constant war when the au begins, but let me throw out something ELSE interesting: on reaching the world of empires, it is the first time anyone from earth has seen a nether portal. it is also the first time that technoblade, the pigman, ends up meeting a piglin. it is a strange and uncomfortable experience for techno; what do you do when you see something that is almost shaped like yourself, but like through a mirror darkly? they can only live in the nether or they succumb to the same zombie illness that the cold once killed off. are they related? is it simply convergent evolution? or is it something else entirely...?
techno didn't particularly like it. the zombie pigmen he sometimes saw around volcanos (where the illness had mostly been driven to by present day), he treated them as dangerous brothers. that's not what these piglins are. he's not sure what the piglins are.
he believes scott, when he says that the nether is the demon's realm, after seeing that.

Hold Your Wake Softly, for the Dead Sleep Lightly.

Triggers/Warnings: Major Character Death, Temporary Character Death, Graveyards/Cemeteries, Mentions of Death, Explicit Language/Swearing, Blood and Minor Injuries.
It's been six months since she died, so Jason goes to visit her grave. Only sometimes things aren't quite as they seem, and dreams are merely reflections of reality.
Word Count: 1794

A/N: So this is probably going to be my last Maribat March ficlet. I've been super busy and I got ill again (which is why I've not responded to comments yet, sorry!), so I've barely been able to get any writing done, and most of the fics are turning out not great. This fic is the only one that turned out well and I'm happy with it. I've not really got else much to say, so uhh enjoy!
If you want to be tagged in future oneshots/fics, or a specific Au, then comment or send me a DM/ask!
Also side note, Don't Like? Don't Read. Also also, please do not criticise any of my writing. This was written for fun and receiving criticism, even in a compliment/criticism sandwich, is the exact opposite of fun.

Jason knows he's dreaming. But what strikes him as odd, is that he's dreaming. He's not dreamt since his dip in the Lazarus Pit. Weathered nightmares and night terrors, sure. But not the stuff of rainbows, sugar plums, and happiness, no. Although, this dream he's dreaming isn't exactly that either, so perhaps it shouldn't be that much of a surprise.
He can't quite tell where he is. The surroundings are completely unfamiliar. He's on a roof, that much is clear. But it's not a roof in Gotham, no. Jason knows the roofs of Gotham like he knows the back of his hand. If he had to guess, the roof looked European in style, maybe Gothic French/Parisian if he had to guess specifically. There are poles and fairy lights strung up around the roof, and a picnic blanket is laid out with a basket overflowing with sandwiches, pastries, and fresh fruit.
And as lovely as the scene is, the disconcerting part, is the phantasm sitting beside him. A phantasm in the guise of his lost love. Just sitting there, alive and breathing—with her eyes, so bright, twinkling in the low light—and her dazzling smile, the lovesick one he'd always catch her doing when she thought he wasn't looking.
Jason can almost imagine the warmth of her. But this is a dream, and she's nothing more than a phantasm. So there's no real warmth. It's just his imagination. Not that that knowledge does anything to ease the aching of his wretched and bleeding heart.
He's almost tempted to stay here. To indulge in this love-stricken reverie of a dream. But he can't. Not tonight. Not when tomorrow he'll wake with the dawn and trudge over to the cemetery and lay a bouquet of marigolds upon her grave.
It almost sickens him, to need to leave this place. He'd love nothing more than to hold her in his arms one last time. But she's not real.
Jason feels a need to wake up, for the sliver of peace in the hopes that he'll forget this torturous dream upon waking. It hurts. It hurts so much to be close to her only for her to be a phantasm.
No sooner does he think this, he feels the darkness of the dream ending pull at him. Tugging him away from the rooftop with her and tossing him into the swirling shadows of dreamless sleep.
-<◊>-
Except, he doesn't wake up in his bed from a dreamless sleep like he expected to. No, he finds himself in a bleak observatory with a giant window that has a butterfly design in it. The edges of the room are shadowed, as only the window and a circle in the centre of the room are illuminated with faded blue light.
There's a shimmer in the centre of the illuminated circle, and a young child kneeling on the floor flickers into view. No matter how much he tries to focus, Jason finds himself unable to tell what the child looks like. It's almost as though there's a magical glamour surrounding them that makes it impossible to see their true appearance.
Jason walks to the edge of the circle and stares at the child. They're holding two pieces of jewellery, one in each hand. In their left hand, is a pair of red and black spotted earrings and in their right hand, is a black and green ring.
Two strange small creatures float above the child's hands. The one floating over the ring, is a weird-looking purplish-black cat with green eyes. The one floating over the earrings, is an even weirder looking red and black spotted bug thing.
Jason squints then furrows his brow, the child and the creatures appear to not have noticed him yet. Yet.
“I want to make a wish.” The child says solemnly.
The bug creature looks pained at that statement. “There'll be consequences.”
“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” The cat creature pipes up.
The child bites their lip. “I know and I don't care. I want to bring the previous Ladybug holder back to life.”
The bug creature starts to tear up. “Mar—” it pauses. “The previous holder has been dead for six months.”
A chill runs down Jason's back and his mouth becomes inexplicably dry. Fuck, he thinks weakly. They're talking about her. He drags a hand down his face and bitterly blinks back tears, feeling so fucking conflicted.
The child tilts their head to the side and closes their eyes for a minute. “I know. I still want to bring them back. Again, I don't care about the price. The previous holder shouldn't have died.”
The cat creature narrows its eyes at the child. “If you bring the previous holder back with the wish, it won't be an immediate revival. Whoever pays the price for the wish will spend the next six months slowly wasting away as the previous holder returns to life.”
Jason feels sick because as much as he misses her like a lost limb, he doesn't want to subject her to the trauma of coming back to life and digging herself out of her own grave, like he did.
The child hums. “Like a portable charger? Drain the power in one object to recharge the other object?”
Huffing, the cat creature rolls in its eyes. “That's one way of putting it.”
The child nods. “Do I get to choose who pays the price?”
“No, the person who pays the price must be of equal value to the previous holder. For example, you couldn't pay the price because you're too young and don't use a power to achieve a goal.” The bug creature explains, shaking its head.
The child frowns and puts the earrings and ring on. “Okay. Tikki Spots on. Tikki, Plagg, Unify.”
The following flash of bright light temporarily blinds Jason.
“Using the power of the Ladybug Miraculous of Creation and the Cat Miraculous of Destruction, I wish that...—”
The world fades to darkness and silence before Jason can hear the rest of the wish.

It's the dawning of the wake, with its claggy skies above and claggier mud underfoot; rain splatters against the pavement in a constant solemn cadence. Rusted wrought iron railings are all that stands between him and his love.
Jason treads slowly, shoulders hunched, gaze averted. He's walked this path before. Too many times, the others would claim. He bites his lip and blinks back tears. He follows the path to the marble gravestone, her gravestone.
Falling to his knees upon the grave's soil, he lightly traces the stone's engravings with one finger, silently muttering along.
When he runs out of words to trace, he closes his eyes and leans his forehead against the stone. Digging his hands into the grass and soil, he can't help but let out a hollow sob.
The minutes ebb by as he slowly recomposes himself. The cold wet mud of the grave clings to him, both that and the rain chills him to the bone.
He sighs, then swallows thickly. “Hey, Mari. I know missed visiting you last week, I'm sorry. I got caught in a bit of a scuffle in our—uh night job.” He quickly glances around incase anyone's nearby, but on such a dreary day like this, there's not another soul in sight. “I attempted to bake your signature macaroons last night. They turned out fairly well but they're shit in comparison to how you get them to turn out.” He chuckles hollowly.
“Last night whilst out on the night job, I found a tiny blue kitten with the most piercing blue eyes ever. Kinda reminded me of you, so I kinda ended up adopting it. I think you both would get along like a house on fire if you met. I was going to bring her today, but well you can see what the weather's like. Don't really want to get the thing sick when it's like this.” Jason rambles idly, not really putting too much thought into what he's saying.
He huffs and pauses for a second, “Actually speaking about last night, I had the fucking weirdest of dreams. And it wasn't just a weird pit nightmare like it usually is—”
He's cut off as a swarm of black ladybirds converge around the cemetery. On autopilot, Jason stumbles to his feet and backs away from her grave, eyeing the swarm with calculative apprehension.
As he does that, the swarm sweep over her grave before dissipating into the sky.
Jason holds his breath, waiting to see what the ladybirds did.
A minute passes in silence, and just as he's about to step closer, a muffled and sickening scream emanates from beneath the grave. Fragments of last night's dream rise to the forefront of Jason's mind. “Fuck!”
He throws himself forwards and starts desperately digging into the mud with his hands. “Come on, come on, come on…” Each second passes as slow as molasses but eventually, the mud starts to gradually give way underneath him.
A grasping hand breaches the surface and starts frantically clawing at the ground. A wave of nausea hits Jason like a brick wall. He hesitates for a split second before fixating on digging up the mud around the hand. With each scoop of mud dug away, the hole around the hand starts to widen and widen until a second hand breaches the surface. With increased desperation, Jason continues to dig and dig and dig.
After another couple of minutes digging, the hole's big enough that Jason can see the coffin shards and ripped scraps of clothing among the mud. He grabs at the arms and pulls with everything he has but the resistance is nearly equal.
Gritting his teeth, he continues to pull until the resistance against him suddenly weakens and he stumbles back, dragging the cor—body of Marinette out of the grave.
Jason let's go of her after a second and drinks in the sight of her, alive and breathing. Under his breath, he whispers, “Mari…”
Frankly, she looks awful. Skin pallid, eyes bloodshot and glassy, freckles faded, hair dull, hands bloody. Her clothes are ripped, muddied, and bloodied. Earthworms, as well as other underground creepy crawlies, fall off her.
Her eyes manage to focus on him for a second but almost immediately after, her eyes roll back and she collapses, unconscious.
Jason rushes forwards and grabs her, to stop her from hitting the ground. Dazed, he fumbles for his phone and calls Bruce. “Marinette's alive.” He immediately blurts out, “She fucking dug herself out the fucking grave and she's unconscious and injured.” It takes all his willpower not to choke on his words.
“We'll ready the medbay. Tim will pick you, he'll be there in five.”

okay so ever since I saw this post by @zendayacolemann can’t stop thinking about a Little Women x ATLA crossover; particularly one where the sisters are all benders of different elements! I love the idea of families being made up of different benders. Also, I’m heavily basing my au off the 2019 film, it’s been ages since I’ve read the book. So here are a couple of my headcanons for that idea below the cut:
I imagine that the crossover would take place sometime after the LOK era, after the various kingdoms became less homogenous, and after the Harmonic Convergence brought about more airbenders.
I don’t see the March family living in Republic City, but maybe off in a reasonably populated town some ways away. That way, instead of going to New York City to pursue writing, Jo goes to Republic City to pursue a teaching career.
Meg, the eldest, is a waterbender. Personally, Meg gives me strong Katara vibes, and she’s a very compassionate and mature human being.
Jo is obviously a firebender. With such a hot temper, I think she has a similar experience to when Aang initially lets his firebending go out of control, but learns to control it after a while.
Beth is an airbender. I diverge from the original post here, but I strongly feel that Beth is an airbender because she’s known as the peacemaker between the sisters.
That leaves Amy to be an earthbender. I think this makes a lot of sense because in my head personality-wise, Jo is the “unstoppable force” and Amy is the “immovable object” which fits their elements really well.
Obviously if you’re gonna have four sisters bending different elements, there’s gotta be some strong, strong bender lines in their family. I see Marmee as a firebender for sure, one that’s more mature and developed than Jo. She’s the oldest daughter of a firebender father and a waterbender mother. As for Father March, I had a harder time figuring out his element since his character is pretty minor, but I think I’d go with him as an airbender. In Little Women, he’s a chaplain serving in the Civil War, and supposedly the reason he and his family are poor is because he helped a friend out of poverty. Thus, being an airbender would fit the “spiritual” characteristic of being a chaplain, and I also see him as a part of Tenzin’s airbender team that goes around to various locations helping out people who need it (like Kai and Opal in Yu in LOK). I imagine he’d spend a pretty reasonable amount of time traveling on his flying bison, Gerda, and helping others. He’s the son of an airbender mother and an earthbender father (Bopal anyone? jk).
Even though I’ve very conveniently made the March sisters’ grandparents all different element benders as well, I think as a whole, they have plenty of aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family that are a wild mix of different benders. There’s just a strong bending line in the March family, everybody just has a knack for marrying and having kids other benders. There’s a popular saying in the town "There hasn’t been a nonbender in the March family for ten generations.” (In reality, it’s more like 6 generations)
Aunt March is an Earthbender. I headcanon Aunt March as getting along with Amy more than her other nieces (hence why Aunt March decides to bring Amy to Europe with her instead of Jo or anyone else) which fits because her and Amy are both earthbenders. Since she didn’t have any descendants of her own, she paid close attention to the March sisters when they were young, and as soon as Amy showed signs of earthbending, she immediately became her favorite of the four.
Now for some other characters: John (Meg’s eventual husband) is a non-bender and Fire Nation citizen (You’ll see why below). I actually love how this idea plays into how Meg’s decision to be a traditional housewife and mother is at odds with what Jo wants. I think in childhood, Meg and Jo had a lot of fun with their bending, so for Meg to make a Fire Nation non-bender the most important person in her life feels like a betrayal to Jo. Keep in mind, since Jo grew up almost exclusively around strong benders, Jo definitely thinks John is boring compared to her (”He will be boring after two years and we will be interesting forever!”). Jo probably grows up with a little bit of bender superiority, but I think she’d eventually grow out of it, particularly after Beth dies, and I’ll get into that more further down.
Laurie, Amy’s eventual husband: After some thinking, I think Laurie’s also a firebender, same as Jo. The difference is that Laurie had a lot of formal training thanks to his grandfather and being a rich kid and all that, so his firebending is much more controlled than Jo’s is. Laurie’s equally as passionate as Jo is, but as a “rich kid of society” with an overprotective grandfather, he has to keep his behavior controlled. John is still his tutor, hired to go out to this town where Mr. Laurence lives to tutor the spoiled firebender boy on his Fire Nation history. Anyway, Laurie and Jo hit it off when they meet, both being firebenders and all that. I think Laurie’s the first firebender of Jo’s age that Jo meets. Like in the original story, Laurie falls in love with Jo, but Jo rebukes him.
Fredrich Bhaer, Jo’s eventual husband: Bhaer’s scholarly, gentle and tender, so I like to think he’s an air nomad travelling the world and learning about different cultures and people. He has his tattoos and a flying bison named Hooper. He meets Jo in Republic City, where they’re both being employed to teach at the same establishment. I think Jo eventually falls in love with him because he challenges the way she thinks and he reminds her of Beth (also an airbender!).
That was all of the major characters, but here are a couple other ideas I had for this crossover au:
Meg and Jo both showed very early signs of bending, probably when they were around 2 years old. Marmee and Father March found out Meg was a waterbender one day when it snowed and they saw Meg bend snow into various shapes for her own amusement. They discovered that Jo was a firebender when flames shot out of the family’s fireplace one day when she was having a tantrum.
Beth was actually a late bloomer, the last of the sisters to develop bending powers. She didn’t start showing signs of airbending until she was 5 (One day she sneezed and shot herself into the air a few feet), and when she did, she kept it hidden at first. Mostly because she knew that if she was an airbender, she’d have to leave home and travel to the Air Temples for training like her father did, and she didn’t want to leave her family or home (Similarly to Beth in Little Women). She actually learns a decent amount of airbending in secret until her father catches her doing it one day, and convinces Beth that her airbending is not a bad thing, and that even though she will go to the air temples for training, she’ll always have a place at home.
Amy started showing signs of earthbending when she was 2 and teething; her parents would find rocks in her crib bent in different shapes for her to chew on.
After Marmee and Father March find out about Beth’s airbending, they are, as they like to say, “delighted to have the full set.” News of the Four March Sisters spread rather quickly in town, especially since everybody had thought Beth to be a nonbender for so long.
None of the girls receive any “formal” bending training aside from family members teaching them. Meg learns her waterbending skills from her maternal grandmother, and Marmee trains Jo. Jo struggles a lot at first with keeping her firebending under control, and it isn’t until she accidentally burns Amy one day that she takes Marmee’s warnings seriously. Beth is mainly trained by her father and partly by the Air nomads when she visits the Air Temples with her father, and Amy gets a lot of training from her Aunt March, especially after Aunt March decides to take Amy on a trip to Ba Sing Se and hires a certified Earthbending master (her own teacher when she was young) to teach her. All of the sisters except Beth, who dies before she gets her airbender tattoos, eventually become masters of their own elements.
Despite Meg and Beth’s best efforts, Jo and Amy definitely destroyed their house more than once in several fights. Beth would try to blow them apart when they were fighting, and Meg would try to reign in Jo’s firebending, but it didn’t always work. Marmee would try to teach Jo to control her firebending, but it was impossible when Jo was younger.
Jo and Meg dreamt of being on a pro bending team when they were little, and often pretended they were, until Meg got older and lost interest and Amy got old enough to start interrupting their pretend sessions and annoyingly insert herself as their third teammate. Jo never really let go of that dream, though.
Though Father March mostly taught Beth airbending at home, they did take trips to the air temple every now and then. Beth is a really good airbender, but she doesn’t like bending in front of other people. One day she decides to accompany her father on one of his service trips to help out a distant town of non-benders in need of food and protection from bandits, and it is there where she catches the fever that eventually kills her.
Father March and Beth return home after a month, tired but happy. Beth is flushed, but really happy that she made the trip with Father March. She wants to do it more often, but unfortunately, falls ill days after returning. It’s a week later that Father March finds out that there was a small outbreak in the town they were staying in. It’s because of this that Jo develops a strong scorn for non-benders; she hates that her beloved Beth is suffering because the non-benders weren’t able to take care of themselves. This is accentuated by Meg marrying John. Beth recovers, but is still fragile, so she spends the rest of her days at home. Jo returns from Republic City when she hears of Beth being ill, and takes her to the coast to get better. It isn’t until after Beth passes away that Jo eventually understands why Beth went to help the non-benders. Beth’s death causes Jo to resolve to be kind to all people, regardless of bending ability.
I mentioned this earlier, but Jo decides to go to Republic City to find work. She’s employed by a rich firebender family to teach their young daughters firebending, while Friedrich teaches them history. She and Friedrich get into arguments over subjective things, which element is best (Friedrich is obviously biased towards air, Jo is biased towards fire), which Firelord of the Hundred Year War was worse, Sozin, Azulon, or Ozai (Friedrich thinks it’s Sozin because of the airbender genocide, Jo thinks it’s Ozai because who burns the face of their own kid? who does that?), and lots of other fun stuff. Jo doesn’t realize how much she loves bickering with Friedrich until she returns home for Beth’s funeral. Friedrich visits the March family home shortly after, announcing that he is returning to the Eastern Air Temple, and everyone in the March family can tell that he and Jo are in love with each other and encourage Jo to catch Friedrich before he leaves on Hooper.
Aunt March takes Amy to Ba Sing Se, where she trains under Aunt March’s former Earthbending teacher. It’s in Ba Sing Se where she almost gets engaged to Fred Vaughn, a fellow earthbender from a very wealthy earthbending family. She also encounters Laurie, post Jo-rejection, who is traveling in the same city. They fight over Amy’s prospective engagement, but reconcile after they receive news of Beth’s death.
Eventually, (mimicking the end of Little Women), Jo inherits Aunt March’s old mansion, Plumfield, and she and Friedrich turn it into a school for bender and nonbender children alike.

i made my version of the 10% left AU bc im a sucker for storylines like that lol
i used 20 cats instead of 13 tho bc i felt weird abt the odd numbers
so thunderclan contains lionblaze, rosepetal, spiderleg, bumblestripe, amberkit, purdy, and mousefur
riverclan has troutstream, rushtail, pebblefoot, perchkit, havenkit, and lizardkit
shadowclan has olivenose, ferretclaw, grasskit, and whitewater
windclan has weaselfur, sedgewhisker, and webfoot
basically after the battle the last of the clans converge together to make a single clan so they can all protect eachother and try to start again. i think it may be called lakeclan or somethin just bc of the fact the lake is so important to them as a whole, but i havent rlly decided yet, i may think of a better name.
lionblaze gives up fighting entirely and becomes a medicine cat. he's guided by leafpool, squirrelflight, jayfeather and hollyleaf in starclan. they give him advice and try to teach him how to adjust to his new path and learn to help others by healing
rosepetal's calm and wise nature and her experience as an excellent warrior earns her the leadership position, and she becomes rosestar. sedgewhisker eventually becomes her deputy. rosestar also begins rebuilding her relationship with spiderleg bit by bit
spiderleg turns a new leaf. he works through his depression and grief by helping the others. he spends alot of time with mousefur and rosestar, and plans to mentor amberkit when shes apprentice-aged. he becomes a more well-rounded cat as a whole and works hard to better himself and the connections he has left
bumblestripe is really depressed for a while. he misses dovewing alot and keeps himself in a cycle of "what-ifs". he and rosestar get close, as theyve always been friends before, and she helps him work thru some of his issues. theyre pretty close
all of the elders become pretty good friends. purdy and webfoot grow close since they both love storytelling. purdy becomes the grandpa of the clan and keeps everyone positive and optimistic. he spends a ton of time with the kits too. mousefur is really distraught for a long time, but eases into her new friend group. she and whitewater get along pretty well after a while.
troustream and rushtail are really close. troutstream is doing what she can to adjust to the change, but still spends alot of time at the lake alone to take a breather. rushtail tries to help her, but hes mourning pretty heavily over hollowflight and is having a hard time moving on. pebblefoot wants to care for them both, but rushtail is pushing him to retire due to how bad his injuries from the battle are. the riverclan cats arent used to being away from the river, but are trying to make due as the clan tries to find an appropriate place to settle permanently so everyone is comfortable.
olivenose has been spending time in the nursery. shes not a queen, but watching the kittens has made her feel alot better about the future of the clan. sedgewhisker helps her, and so do the elders and lionblaze. olivenose is pretty anxious and tends to get nervous, but has been trying to work through her anxiety with ferretclaw's help. ferretclaw has been nervous and suspicious as well, and venting to eachother has helped them come to terms with the aftermath feelings of the battle.
weaselfur has been unusually quiet. he likes spending time with the elders, and sedgewhisker helps him think of windclan's better days. sedgewhisker hasn't been the same since losing her mate and daughters, but has taken on as much responsibility as she can handle. she helps lipnblaze gather herbs and was surprised when rosestar picked her as deputy, for her reasonable nature and dedication to moving forward.
amberkit has been having a hard time without her parents, but her new nursery mates help her feel more normal. grasskit clings to her often, and theyre close friends. the triplets from riverclan wreak the most havoc and are incredibly protective of eachother, and they give olivenose a run for her money. the clan is lucky to have so many kittens, because kittens mean a better future for the clan.
but yeah i rlly like the concept of the AU! and i had a ton of fun thinking this thru and i wanna write more and devleop more! if i write any fics ill link yall to them! its a cool idea and i hope to see more ppl do their own versions too

1, 8, 15, 16 for Fennas and/or Ranna?
° Fennas.
Tumblr media
1. If not for the Conclave, what would drive your character to join the Inquisition?Chance, mostly. And grief and anger. In his companion!AU, he joins the Inquisition temporarily because his personal goals happen to converge with the Herald’s mission. He sticks around because a) he's just lost someone and the thought of going back to his old life and wallowing in his grief makes him ill,b) he sees people struggle and suffer and he wants to help them (yeah, even the shems) because he's a decent bloke,c) the Breach/Corey is a very real threat to everyone and helping against it/him is the sensible thing to do.But he WILL leave if he doesn't like where the Inquisition is headed and had it not been for the incident that prompted him to join forces with the Herald, he wouldn't travel all the way to the nearest Inquisition outpost just to get himself hired as an agent.
8. What kind of Inquisitor would drive them to leave the Inquisition/confront them about their actions (what gets their approval low? what does that scene look like)? Answered earlier.15. Without the influence of their decisions for the Inquisition, which of the companions do they get along with? Which ones do they bicker with? He'd be friends with Bull and Varric. He'd click with Blackwall pretty fast. (He'd also be very quick to forgive him; he would continue to call him Blackwall - until Thom asked him to switch to his real name.)Despite all her Chantry nonsense, he'd have huge respect for Cassandra – and if you brought them both along often enough, they'd form a friendship. He’d be polite and respectful with Vivienne, but they wouldn’t really like each other. She represents a world he can navigate well enough but doesn’t really want to connect with.Dorian would get on his nerves – but if they both had a good relationship with the Inky, they'd eventually understand one another and start getting along. Cole would make him a tad uneasy at first, but he would eventually develop a good rapport with human!Cole (and he'd be more or less indifferent to Spirit!Cole). He'd respect Solas's knowledge, but he would deeply dislike him. The sentiment would be mutual and they'd mostly ignore each other. He'd be super irritated by Sera and he'd hate being around her – but you'd get the feeling he realizes she's very young and is actually trying to be patient with her. (She would derive much pleasure and amusement from pushing his buttons, though, and – if you brought them both along often enough, his patience would eventually run out. You'd get a cutscene with them bickering – ME2 style – and you'd have to resolve the issue.)16. What would the Fear Demon say to them in the Fade to try and discourage them? "Ah, the spell breaker, the mage killer. The tallest, strongest, toughest warrior of your clan – yet you could not protect your own from the very people you were trained to fight. How pathetic. What good is a mage killer who loses the one thing he loves most to a bunch of unwashed, underfed apostates?"If romanced by the Inquisitor: "But how much did you love him, really? You moved on quickly enough..."
° Ranna.
Tumblr media
1. If not for the Conclave, what would drive your character to join the Inquisition?Curiosity. He'd itch to be at the centre of it all and witness history in the making. Also, the Breach and the anchor are closely related to his studies (his clan has mostly travelled along a trail of sethenerans and they have some experience with tears and rifts in the Veil – and with mending them). He'd want to be a part of the Inquisition for altruistic reasons (to be useful, to help where he can) as well as for more selfish ones – to learn and to grow as a person and as a mage.(He'd leave the moment he'd decide he'd be more useful and more likely to learn away from the Inquisition.)
8. What kind of Inquisitor would drive them to leave the Inquisition/confront them about their actions (what gets their approval low? what does that scene look like)? Answered earlier.15. Without the influence of their decisions for the Inquisition, which of the companions do they get along with? Which ones do they bicker with? He's easy to get along with and slow to genuinely dislike people – so he'd have a fairly good chemistry with most other companions. He'd click with Solas and Dorian very quick. He'd be a tad aloof but most respectful around Vivienne. If they both spent a lot of time in the party, they'd eventually develop an easy, casual friendship. He'd have a good rapport with Varric. He'd be a tad suspicious of Blackwall and Bull. No animosity on his part – but he wouldn't trust them completely and he'd make it obvious. After Blackwall's revelation, if Blackwall was allowed to stay, Ranna would noticeably relax around him. He wouldn't really be super friendly towards him – but he'd be civil and respectful. He would warm up to Vashoth!Bull. He'd grow even more distrustful and aloof around the Qun loyal Bull. He'd have a serious crush on Cass.He wouldn't be too bothered by Sera's antics, but he wouldn't be friends with her either. He may tease her a bit a couple of times, but mostly he’d just leave her alone. He wouldn't waste his time and spoons on cheeky adolescents. He'd be very fond of Cole (all versions of him). He wouldn't be protective like Varric or Solas, though. He'd be encouraging, but not coddling. And he'd be asking a lot of questions. You'd get the feeling he's more interested in learning about and from Cole than he is in trying to teach him anything.16. What would the Fear Demon say to them in the Fade to try and discourage them? "Ranna, the First! What a joke. As if you hadn't always struggled trying to keep up with the Keeper's Second. What kind of Keeper would you make, anyway? You're way happier at Skyhold, serving shems, sharing your hard-earned knowledge with them and following the Herald of their false God, than you have ever been studying with the Keeper or serving your own people. You're not fit to be the guardian of your ancestors' wisdom, you've never been worthy – and you know it."

Description: AU where Leonard meets Jim as children and their lives converge at different years as they grow up.
Part 1
Tumblr media
It was years before the two saw each other again. After the accident Leonard couldn’t stand to be near the starships so they went back to Georgia. It wasn’t until he was in middle school that they asked his father to return for another consulting job. They set them up in the same rental house as before, and he was in the same room. Even years later the room looked the same with the floral wallpaper. The window seat seemed a lot smaller then it had when he was little, but the view was still nice.
When he got to school and once again knew no one, this time he wasn’t as worried about it. He had already found that he was smarter than most of his classmates in Georgia and that a good portion of them resented him for that fact. He didn’t see Iowa as being any different. He wasn’t going to worry about making friends. He just wanted to get through this trip without too much incident.  So when he was confronted with a pair of the most startling blue eyes in the world as he ate his lunch the feelings that they brought up were unexpected.
The memories flooded his mind, “Jimmy?”
The blue eyes widened a bit, then squinted in thought. “Bones?”  Leonard handed over his apple as an answer and Jimmy’s smile was almost as brilliant as his eyes. “Dude, it’s great to see you. How long are you back for?”
“A couple of years probably. They have my dad consulting on the new batch of flying death machines.” Leonard grumbled before going back to his sandwich.
Jimmy flopped down next to him on the bench, “You used to like those flying death machines.”
“That was before I learned how many ways they can kill you. One tiny crack in the hull and our blood boils in thirteen seconds.”  He was about to go on but a laugh from Jimmy stopped him.
“Man, I have missed you! And not just because of the apples.” Jimmy took a big bite out of the apple in his hand. “I hope you’re wrong though, about the death machines, because I’m gonna be on one this summer.”
Leonard stopped eating to look at Jimmy in shock, “What? Your going out there, into space?”
“Yup, this summer I’m gonna go visit my uncle and his family on some new colony planet, Tarsus four. It’s gonna be awesome!” Jimmy was so happy, Leonard couldn’t bring himself to dampen his enthusiasm with more statistics.
The year went by fairly quickly, the two boys becoming nearly inseparable. Leonard was happy to have a friend, it made the time in Iowa bearable.  He even began to bring an extra apple and sandwich with him in his lunch for Jimmy who still never brought enough food to school with him. Jimmy was still quite popular with the girls, although he was old enough now to have some understanding as to why. Jimmy was a charmer, and those bright blue eyes of his could make the most stoic of girls blush when he turned the full force of their gaze on them. It still made Leonard a little jealous when Jimmy would be surrounded by girls and barely notice Leonard was still there. He just figured it was still because he wanted his friend to himself. Jimmy was his only real friend here.
Jimmy’s mysterious bruises were still a problem as well, but he no longer bothered to come up with reasons for them. Jimmy would just shrug and change the subject, but Leonard did notice Jimmy didn't spend much time at home. When he mentioned it to his dad, his father looked concerned. He knew that Leonard cared for his friend deeply, and said he would look into it. Unfortunately there seemed to be a lot of people aware of the situation, but no one who wanted to do anything about it. (Leonard would not learn of this for many years, and when he did it would make him physically ill.)
The summer came to quickly for Leonard’s liking, and soon he was saying goodbye to his friend, waving as Jimmy boarded the shuttle that would take him to the transport ship to Tarsus IV.  It was only meant to be for about six months, but Leonard knew it was going to be the most boring six months of his life with no one left to hang out with, and not even school to occupy him for the first half of the time.
Leonard did send communications to Jimmy, but it took weeks to get a message there and weeks to get one back. The wait was agonizing. It was in the third month that Leonard got the message from Jimmy that they were having problems with the crops, and people were worried that there wouldn’t be enough to eat. Jimmy tried to keep an upbeat tone to it but Leonard was worried all the same. He told his dad about the letter, but the elder McCoy assured his son that the local governing body there would have a plan, and thing might be a little rough but it would ultimately be fine.
The next week news broke about the total crop failure, and about the governing bodies plan to conserve food by carrying out mass killings of the settlers. Only those chosen few in charge were safe from the kill squads. Men, women and children were being massacred in the town square. Leonard started hyperventilating as the news played out in front of him. His father tried to comfort him, but was in almost as much shock at this turn in events as Leonard was. What he could say was that Jimmy was resourceful, if anyone could find a way to survive this it was Jimmy, but his words had little conviction. How could anyone escape this kind of evil.
It was another month before Starfleet was able to retake the planet. Those in charge that didn’t flee were arrested, and the area was scoured for survivors. Leonard heard stories of small families that had hidden and survived the horrors that befell the other settlers, but they were few and none of the video feed sent back included a boy with bright blue eyes.  Leonard didn’t give up on that last sliver of hope he had that his friend would be found. Then one night the story broke of a group of small children found hiding in the woods and the boy who had helped them escape even when their families did not. The tale of how he would sneak out of the hiding place at night in search of food and water to keep them alive, all why dodging the patrol and searching soldiers. It was an incredible tale, but when this heroic young boys face was shown on screen Leonard cried with joy. Dirty and much to thin, Jimmy was barely recognizable, but those blue eyes couldn’t have belonged to anyone else.
When he was brought back to Iowa he was in the hospital for months recovering. His father had been doing volunteer work there in his free time from working his consulting job, and was able to keep an eye on Jimmy’s recovery, even if he wasn’t his primary doctor and he made sure to give Leonard updates about his friend everyday that he could. Eventually when they deemed Jimmy was stable enough for visitors Leonard’s dad brought him up to the hospital.
When Leonard entered the room Jimmy was all smiles, “Hey man! Did you miss me?” Leonard stifled the sob that nearly escaped and instead went for humor. He didn’t want to get all emotional on his friend.
“Were you gone? I hadn’t noticed.” he smirked as this got quite a laugh outta Jimmy.
They sat and talked for awhile about the good things they had experienced in their months apart, trying not to think of the rest. Soon the nurse came in with Jimmy’s lunch and told Leonard he could only stay a few more minutes, but he could come back the next day. The lunch tray was sparse, only a little broth, and crackers and jello. Jimmy didn’t look to thrilled by the options. “They say the lack of food up there left my immune systems all screwed up and I’ve got a long list of allergies now. I could have eaten more, but they were all so hungry. They seemed like they needed it more than me. I’ve been hungry before.” His voice got quieter as he kept speaking, the last bit barely a whisper.
It made Leonard’s chest ache, but he knew not to dwell on it, that was not what Jimmy needed. “Well, you’ll have to get me a copy of that list. I wouldn’t wanna pack anything you couldn’t eat in my lunch when you’re back in school.”
Jimmy gave him a small smile, “Sure man, you’ll be better at remembering that stuff than I will anyhow. It will be like having one of the medieval food tasters, keeping the king away from the poisoned food.”
“If you think for one minute I’m calling you Your Majesty or something you got another thing coming.” Leonard responded. “I’ll try to come back tomorrow if you want, maybe bring some cards so we can play rummy or something.”
“Yeah that’d be great, it’s so boring here. I hate hospitals.” Jimmy smiled and waved him off, and Leonard managed to get all the way to the elevator before breaking down in tears.
It was a while before Jimmy came back to school. Once he did he was fawned over by many of the other kids who either saw him as a hero or a survivor of a terrible disaster. Leonard tried his best to treat his friend no different than he had before, and it was exactly what Jimmy needed. They became even closer than before and Leonard truly hated the idea of going back to Georgia and leaving Jimmy behind. He wished he could take him back with him, but that just wasn’t an option. His only consolation was he could keep in touch with him this time, and his dad had said he would be called back to Iowa again in a few more years.

METRO UK      APRIL 8, 2013
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW! FIRST UK SOULMATE PAIR DISCOVERED: TWO YEARS ON
Anita and Wesley Goulding made history on this day in 2011 as the first couple in the UK to find their soulmate after the Era Shift. They’ve sat down with us today to discuss how they met, the struggles they endured in the early days of finding one another, and why they think the new soulmate process is a double edged sword.
Q: Congratulations on two years!
Anita: Thank you! It really doesn’t feel like it. I wake up every morning and see him, and I somehow fall more in love with him.
Wesley: I honestly don’t know what I was doing in my life before I met her. It’s been the most magical two years.
Q: Finding your soulmate is different for everyone. Tell us what happened to you both, as the first.
A: Well, I don’t think we were technically the first [laughs], but I think we were the first to find each other and document it in some way, or at least reach out on a national level to alert people that this was happening? But, for me, I woke up one morning knowing I wasn’t alone in my mind. I know that sounds terrifying or awful, but it actually felt comforting. I could feel him there, sort of at the side, all day until I was able to hear his thoughts.
W: Yes, I woke up that day feeling like I was warm. Warm sounds like a silly way to describe it, but I could feel her presence and it just made me feel good, like down to the core.
A: I think we went about two days before we could talk to one another. It was a constant inner monologue. I wanted to tell him everything the second I heard his voice.
Q: How did you end up meeting or finding each other?
A: We were quite lucky that we only lived about an hour away from each other. We suggested meeting in Bristol for the day because it meant we’d have things to do, and we could leave whenever we wanted if it went badly. He waited for me at the train station and when I saw him by the platform it felt like seeing the sun for the first time.
W: I was quite nervous meeting her because already I knew that I was in quite deep. To be honest, I wasn’t even thinking about if I’d find her attractive because I already knew I would. Everything about her felt right, and when she came off the platform it was like having my breath stolen from me but paradoxically, I could breathe easier knowing she was there and she was mine.
Q: Had you been in a relationship during your time discovering one another?
W: No, and I think again we were lucky in that regard. We’ve all heard stories about people already being married, engaged, or in serious relationships learning that they aren’t soulmates. We were both single and I think that’s why we were able to surrender to the magic of it.
A: I don’t know how we would have handled it had we already been committed to other people. The pull towards him is irresistible and I have great respect for those who are going through that tough situation right now.

THE SCIENCE OF SOULMATES
Natasha Waters - Edited for Metro UK by Miles Kuyer
Before we begin, it is critical that some discussion on the historical context regarding the Era Shift is initiated as to better understand the complexities arising within the studies of Soul Searching, and the concept of the soulmate bonding itself. Furthermore, I would like to point out that this paper exists only as a method of summarising and categorizing what is known, confirmed, and defined in Soul Searching. New discoveries are being made daily given the tumultuous and varying nature of the science, and so I make no attempt to tangentially comment on, or speak to, what may still be considered hypothetical or theory as these are wholly outside of my qualifications. While there is little progress in the study of how soulmate bonding came into fruition (i.e. the direct connection between ion proportion and pheromone detection), there are many things within scientific circles considered to be true and founded, and my hope is to present these to the public to act as a definitive guide on the subject.
In July of 2010, two separate sunspots were discovered on the Sun’s photosphere, each with a diameter of approximately 75,000km in what was eventually discerned to be opposite magnetic polarity. Each spot traveled at the same velocity and propulsion for two days before converging on the photosphere as one critical mass event with a spot diameter of 160,000km. While it is normal for sunspots of this size to endure for a timeframe that varies between two to seven days, this spot endured for three weeks before resulting in a coronal loop. This became the first of many small solar flares across a six month period.
In September of 2010, two other sunspots were discovered in the exact same positions, however these only had diameters of 50,000km. They followed the same trajectory before converging into a single spot with a diameter of 110,000km. The single spot endured for one week before resulting in yet another coronal loop.
In March of 2011, a coronal mass ejection of 1 × 10^25 joules was released in the position where the two sunspots had converged and decayed. This coronal mass ejection resulted in possibly the largest solar flare we had seen in three decades and reached Earth’s atmosphere in the early hours of March 27th.
Four days later, the first soulmate couple was reported on American local broadcast station Channel 5 in the state of Maryland.
Scientific circles have been able to connect the events of the solar flare to the discovery of soul mate bonding, and Soul Searching, due to the processes through which the electrons and ions were able to restructure neurological responses within the human brain. Through various methods of MRI and X-Ray technologies, we are able to state with absolute certainty that the amygdala has seemingly adapted to respond to pheromone triggers across long distances.
While it is still difficult to accurately discern which other parts of the brain have been affected, as the case study for this issue could undoubtedly be humanity itself - especially with each soul bond differing from case to case - there is confidence that the Reticular Activation System, Temporal lobes, and Limbic systems have all evolved or adapted since the solar flare of 2011.

HE STOLE HER CAR AFTER SHE LEFT HIM FOR HER SOUL MATE
[…]
Tune in TONIGHT on Channel 4 to watch The Bond, the latest reality show from the makers -
[…]
Two years after the Era Shift, many adults are still trying to adapt to the ways in which their soul bond will take effect. Not least of which are a group of individuals from Manchester who have come together as a support group after the loss of major senses.
‘I thought I was terminally ill,’ says Catherine Fisher, 30. ‘You really can’t imagine what it’s like to wake up in the morning and suddenly…everything is so grey. I’m still not used to it, really. My memories are all in colour, and I have pictures of events that I know are in colour but I can’t see them that way.’
Within the group, there are many, underlying feelings regarding the concept of the soul mate as a whole.
‘We thought it was supposed to be for the betterment of humanity, you know?’ says Daniel Goddard, 36. ‘I was married to a woman I really did love and we have a beautiful daughter, but how do you tell her mommy and daddy aren’t meant to be together? And how do you explain to your wife that you love her, but it’s not enough? And how can you tell me it’s ok I can’t hear music until I meet the person I’m supposed to be with? I know people have it worse off, really I do, but it’s sh**.’
You shut the paper with a huff and rest your head against the wall of the tube carriage, turning the volume of your music up to drown out the roar. Once again, no Sudoku puzzles. The usual page overrun by redundant soul bond news.
Two years on and still the Era Shift seemed to consume the media, the public, the world. As if this was the only thing to care about. As if love was the only newsworthy event because the lack of choice suddenly made it exciting or mysterious. People falling in and out of love made the front page just as often as a world leader or the start of a new war, and both topics make you feel uneasy and uncomfortable in equal measures.
Love has become an irresistible force and consequently, the heart is now an immovable object. Logically, neither can truly exist. Logically, a love like this should be impossible. Choice of partner has been eradicated, replaced instead with a forced paradox of biblical proportions and you can’t find it in your heart to be pleased.
Some days, admittedly, you feel you may be too ungrateful or scornful. You’ve heard the stories of those who’ve lost colour vision, the ability to hear music, the doom clock on the arm that is constantly counting down, and you know, in some way, you’ve been blessed. Ever since the flare, you’ve felt no discernible or ominous change. Your body and your mind have belonged completely to you, always, never intruded on by someone else’s thoughts or feelings and for this you are thankful.
But you feel the same. Unchanged and unmoved, you’ve yet to feel any sort of connection to humanity beyond the basic framework of how things worked before, and you almost feel as though you are the only one who’s been left behind.
You think you’re supposed to feel part of a grand design. Perhaps, you should feel an anxious sort of excitement that washes over you at whim, whenever you think about prospect or opportunity or fate. Instead, you feel nothing but a tepid neutrality that leaves you feeling bored and, truthfully, bitterly disinterested.
Your thoughts are interrupted by the sensation of being watched…admired. The hairs on your arms start to rise in knowledge and slight discomfort, and you release a quiet sigh.
You remember when tube journeys were an anonymous, rather stoic affair. Not long ago, you felt like you could fade into the sea of faces in a tube carriage, enjoying the comfortable silence that came with the ride. Now, even with your eyes closed, you can feel eyes scanning your face, searching for some kind of trigger or shock that says she’s the one. Two years ago, this kind of scrutiny would have been impolite and in poor etiquette. Lately, you’ve grown used to it and occasionally welcome it. You’re starting feel comfortable in the disappointment and distraction, sometimes luxuriating in gladness that others are just as lost as you.
As the train comes to a halt, you open your eyes and stand to depart. It’s now that you see who was looking at you, studying you with a quizzical and fascinated stare. You smile brightly, though you know this will have little result. He’s handsome, handsome in all the right ways with broad shoulders and long fingers - a musician with kind eyes, you think, and you know you’d call him your type. He smiles back, but it’s sad - for both you and him.
In another life, you’d call this a meet cute. In another life, maybe you would have slipped him your number. Today, you are strangers and today you are not soulmates, neither of you belonging to the other for any substantial amount of time. And while he will forget you, moving on to the next pretty face to find the right curves and teeth and hair, you will remember him only because he was wrong, a mistake you could have made. And you know that you would have picked him, picked him and relished the disaster of it, had you only been given the chance.
Hesitantly, you depart the train as your heart says goodbye to a man who could have been yours, in another life.
The walk to the pub from Angel station is quick, drenched in uncharacteristic sunshine and tucked away from the busy high street. It helps you recenter yourself, finding joy in the smallness and simplicity of things. Life continues on around you and in the heart of the city, you almost feel as though nothing has changed. There’s comfort here, in the obscurity of city streets and you relish the sensation of being alone with yourself.
When you arrive, Kate is already waiting for you in a corner booth near the back, and she waves at you with an awkward enthusiasm, childlike in its nature. She’s radiating joy, it’s brimming out and over from her smile and into the room, and you’re blinded on impact; she’s even ordered you a cider.
Immediately, you’re wary.
‘Hiya,’ you say, shrugging your bag off and onto the cushion between you and the wall. ‘What’s all this about, then?’
‘What do you mean?’ she asks, airily. ‘Can’t I buy you drink?’
‘Kate, you’ve literally never bought me a drink unless it was my birthday.’
She looks down at her own glass, smiling with a warm sort of shyness you haven’t seen since you first met her. It’s unlike her to be so reserved or bashful. Usually, she’s rather frank, even to the point of sometimes catching you off guard with her seemingly absent sense of tact. This is unlike her. She has something she wants to tell you, but she’s afraid of your reaction. She’s afraid of you.
‘I have some news,’ she begins, lightly.
‘Of course you do,’ you say, softly, trying to ease her into the conversation. ‘What’s so important it couldn’t wait until after my shift?’
‘I bonded last night.’
‘Oh…’
Words live in your mind and die on your tongue, dissolving before you can birth them into the atmosphere. A slight chill has wandered down your spine, settling in your bones and dropping your stomach with disappointment. For a whole minute, you forget that your surprised sigh is the only sound you’ve made.
‘Wow, that’s incredible!’ You hope this exclamation sounds excited; you’re sure that it doesn’t.
‘You don’t sound terribly enthusiastic,’ she laughs.
Anyone else, and you know they would have been upset at your reaction. Bonding is meant to be treated like engagement announcements of the past, and your lukewarm response would be considered hurtful and rude. But Kate knows you, knows everything about you down to your core, and she already expected this from you.
‘No I am, really!’ you backtrack with a laugh. ‘I just…you were like, the one friend, you know? We had the shit end of things. And now I’ve got no one to complain to.’
You’re trying to keep the mood light, lacing your tone with a playfulness you think might have been found on single women before the flare.
As usual, she cuts your words down to the heart of your sentiments.
‘You have a soulmate,’ she presses. ‘I know you do.’
This really isn’t what you wanted, changing her announcement into a debate about you and your seemingly absent soul bond. Truthfully, you’re not in the mood to discuss all the ways you seem to be excluded from a newfound sense of completeness, so you change the subject to something that interests you more.
‘Whatever,’ you say, dismissively. ‘Let me see the clock.’
Resting her right arm on the table with an awed expression, you lean forward to admire the purple-white numbers just below her skin.
23:04:16:17:04:22
Twenty-three years, four months, sixteen days, seventeen hours, four minutes, and twenty-two seconds. That’s how long it took her to find her soulmate.
Unlike many people who were fortunate enough to have a clock that counts down to finding their soulmate, Kate had received a clock that tracked how long it would take. You both found this to be one of the least helpful gifts of the solar flare, and, while it isn’t a major sensory loss, for a time you both considered this to be one of the most traumatizing.
The morning she woke up and discovered a clock beneath her skin was the first time you ever heard her cry. She’d called in a panic, her breaths falling in quick, shallow succession as her words became mangled in her sobs. Initially, she thought she had been dreaming, but the burn along her flesh was far to tangible to be fiction of the mind. Then, she thought it was a tattoo and, for a brief moment, she felt comforted. But soon, she realized she hadn’t been out the night before and, probably most horrifying of all, the numbers were moving.
They were counting, upwards and towards something, and for days all she did was watch the clock. She’d skipped classes, sat in her bathtub and watched the way the numbers made the water drops glow. After about a week of trying to figure out what it could possibly be counting to, she threatened to cut the numbers out with a kitchen knife. Screaming over the phone, she said they were driving her crazy, that the numbers haunted her even behind her eyes. She was trapped and consumed by time, and if this was what it took to find true love then she didn’t want it at all.
This was her lowest point, her lowest, darkest point, and it’s difficult to have this memory, so visceral and clear in your mind, as you watch her smile at the thing she once so deeply hated.
In the grand scheme of things, you find this to be an incredibly short period of time: to change your mind about the clock, to change your mind about your soulmate - to find your soulmate at all. It’s all happened so fast, and you’re starting to feel left behind.
Shaking your head to clear your head, you lean back and take a large drink of cider. ‘So, tell me how it happened.’
‘It was in Covent Garden actually.’
Your laugh comes out as an unsurprised bark, accidental in the magnitude of its volume. Covent Garden is her favourite part of London. This story almost sounds romanticized and predictable. ‘Of course it was.’
‘Ha ha,’ she mocks. ‘He was actually coming out of Whittard’s as I was going down to watch the string quartet, and when I saw him it was…it was like seeing stars.’
‘Stars are just lights in the sky,’ you casually remark with a shrug. ‘They aren’t really that special.’
‘I don’t mean like a standard city night sky,’ she retorts with a roll of her eyes. ‘I mean…imagine whole galaxies blooming in front of you.’
Eyes wide at this statement, you almost choke on your drink. ‘Oh, so suddenly you’re a poet?’
‘Maybe I am, now!’ she laughs.
‘So when are you seeing him?’
Her response is terribly quick.
‘Tonight actually.’
Now you do choke on your drink. ‘To-tonight? That’s so soon.’
‘I know,’ she giggles. ‘But within minutes I just wanted to do absolutely everything with him. Like, even right now I’m anxious being away from him.’
Everything about this sounds like it’s moving impossibly fast. There’s no courting, no collection of texts to prelude an actual date, no time to actually get to know one another. Perhaps because you’re the only one without the tension and anticipation of emotional connection, it makes you terribly nervous.
‘Please be careful,’ you say, seriously.
‘He’s my soulmate, not a stranger,’ she sighs.
‘I mean he kind of is.’ Your voice is colder than you intended, so you soften yourself before continuing. ‘You’ve known him, what, twenty-four hours and you’re already in this deep?’
She narrows her eyes at you, and you can feel her frankness before she even opens her mouth.
‘You know,’ she says, voice warm but stern. ‘Not long ago we would have considered this standard excitement over a cute guy. I feel like you think it’s different now because we just know we’re meant to be together.’
‘I’d still be telling you to be careful,’ you reply. ‘Especially if he was just some guy and not your soulmate.’
She takes a long sip of her drink and furrows her brow. ‘Yeah, but he is my soulmate, so I don’t think he’s going to hurt me.’
‘I just have to say it, okay?’ It almost sounds like a plea, and perhaps it is.
Her features relax into an expression of gentle understanding, her lips pulled into a sympathetic smile. Today is not the day for arguing.
‘Sometimes I don’t know why you’re so hard on the soulmate thing,’ she says, changing the subject. ‘You know, considering your parents.’
After the Era Shift, most marriages began to dissolve and shatter as nearly everyone had somehow wound up with the wrong partner. There really wasn’t a single person you knew whose family wasn’t broken because of this, except your own. Somehow, when your parents woke up affected by the solar flare, they faced each other in bed and found The One, the one they had shared a bed with for 35 years. They’d spent the morning laughing, touching, and rediscovering each other, the bond only magnifying their love for one another. This was how it was meant to be, you thought, an awakening and discovery of what was already there. It rarely worked out this way.
‘They were the minority,’ you clarify. ‘And their fate really has nothing to do with mine, you know? They had each other. You have a soulmate. I’m not even sure what I have.’
Kate sips her drink and regards you with a cool stare. She knows there’s more you want to say, and you know she’s already slightly exasperated with you. None of this is new. It’s a discussion you’ve had with her, and many of your other friends, for the past two years and you keep coming back to it like a crutch. You don’t really feel passionate about love, because you’ve been excluded from it for so long. Nor are you passionate about people, but you feel very passionately about free will and you can’t help but feel like it’s been taken from you.
‘Love is complicated,’ you concede. ‘It’s so complex and difficult, and people are always making promises to each other they can barely keep -’
‘That’s why soulmates are a thing now,’ she interjects, smoothly.
‘Okay, but it tripled divorce rates because suddenly these people weren’t meant to be together.’
‘There’s every chance those marriages would have failed along the way, regardless.’ She tries to say it as gently as she can, but it still comes out a little bit callous.
‘Yeah, but not all of them,’ you say, voice rising. ‘Those people entered into a marriage because they loved each other, and some of them would have worked through their issues or weathered that storm because they chose to. That to me is more beautiful than just knowing things are going to be ok because some kind of fate tells you it’s going to be.’
‘I get that, really I do,’ she asserts in hushed tones, trying to coax you back down. ‘But I don’t think you’re counting the fact that you’ll want to choose your soulmate. At every turn, you’ll want to choose them. And no one is saying the problems are gone. You can’t have a relationship that never, ever has an argument, but it makes it easier to forgive.’
‘You’ve literally known yours for a day and you’re already lecturing me,’ you groan, though you can’t seem to hide your laughter.
‘It comes from a place of love,’ she says dryly, reaching out to touch your hand.
You regard each other in silence for a long while, and mentally you’re already preparing for yet another loss. Soon, her time will be entirely taken up with her soulmate. If you do spend time together, it will include a person who effectively turns you into the third-wheel of a nine year friendship. It pains you to see things this way, but you’ve lived through it enough to know this is how it starts and, though you are aware of it, you’re never quite prepared for how it ends. Several of your friends and family have coupled off, their days spent in a marital bliss unlike anything you’d ever witnessed. You know that Kate will always be your friend, but you know, deep down, things will never feel like this again.
Pensive and just a little bit sad, you glance at the clock on your phone and begrudgingly start to gather your things.
‘I’ve got to head to the shop,’ you say, coming to stand and downing the last of your cider. ‘Tell me how everything goes, yeah?’
‘Will do,’ she replies, standing with you to offer you a hug.
Her embrace is warm and comforting, connected in a way you know you will soon miss. Pulling away from it is almost painful, but you give her a kiss on the cheek and tell her that everything is going to be just fine. You will be just fine.
The walk to the record shop is short and what would have been a peaceful stroll is now consumed with thoughts of Kate’s bond. You don’t like to consider yourself envious, you don’t envy her clock and you don’t really envy the fact that she’s found her soulmate, but you think you envy her ability to surrender into the dream of it all. She makes it sound and feel easy, makes it sound like something beautiful and wondrous. Sometimes you think with your guard so high and impenetrable, it’s no wonder you haven’t felt any sort of change.
Pushing open the door to Flashback Records, you’re relieved to see your favourite coworker standing behind the counter cleaning a record. You don’t often get to work with him, seeing as the market for second hand records is rather small. There’s been a slight influx of customers over the years, the advent of soul bonding seeming to make people nostalgic for the romance of tangible, physical music played from a turntable. Still, business is never busy enough to require more than one person on the till.
‘How long are you here?’ you ask, sliding behind him to get to the employees only closet.
‘Until about half-six,’ comes his reply, though he doesn’t both to look up from the record he’s cleaning. His blonde hair has fallen into his eyes, and he’s so focused on his task he doesn’t both to brush it away.
‘Nice. Looks like you’re stuck with me for three hours,’ you tease, nudging him with your hip.
‘Don’t!’ he hisses. ‘You’ll make my hand slip and scratch it.’
Rolling your eyes, you start to clock in on the till computer but you briefly become distracted. On the turntable in the back of the store, Chris has chosen to play something that sounds vaguely familiar to you. You know you’ve heard it before, perhaps with a different guitar effect or voice, but you know that you’ve heard it and you know that, at some point, it meant something very dear to you.
Part of this doesn’t feel like a memory that belongs to you, but you’re fond of the song and the way it tells a story. All at once, you think you’ve figured it out.
‘Hey, Chris, wasn’t this in Pulp Fiction?’ you ask, frozen in place at the counter.
Even as you suggest it, it feels wrong. You know it was used in the film, you’re sure of it, but this doesn’t feel like the question you want to be asking or should be asking. The song feels heavier than a soundtrack, heavier than a memory of cinema or cult fan-boy connection.
‘This is Neil Diamond,’ he snorts. ‘How do you not know this song?’
‘I know the song,’ you say quickly, frustrated. ‘Can you just answer my question.’
‘This is the original version,’ he explains, though he doesn’t sound terribly interested. ‘Urge Overkill did a cover of it that was used in Pulp Fiction.’
‘Where’s the sleeve?’ you demand.
He nods in the direction of the end of the counter, and you eagerly reach for the album sleeve. With it in your hands, you get the passing sensation of slipping, like you’ve held this exact item in your hands before, or heard this precise version or sang it to someone important. You know that you haven’t, and think maybe what you’re experiencing is a prosthetic sort of nostalgia, a nostalgia brought on by a wish for a life you could have lived.
Closing your eyes and taking a deep inhale of breath, you center yourself and, as quickly as it came, the moment passes. You decide then that you need this song in some way, need it to be close to you always, so you pull out your phone and add the album to your Spotify. Truthfully, you don’t think anything has ever been as important as this song is, right here, right now.
It’s important that you have this song with you, tonight and for every tomorrow. Important that you make it yours.

Ok, so I had a few ideas about an AU of an AU of a crack AU thanks to @albaparthenicevelut @resistancepilots  @aifsaath and @forcearama . And then I got thinking. And then it got a little long. Ok, a lot long. But the mental image had so much potential...
It all starts on Mandalore. In another universe Satine Kryze holds her tongue and Obi-Wan Kenobi leaves after saying his goodbyes and commits to becoming the best Jedi he can be. In this universe, she asks him to stay. So he does. Oh not immediately, there are after all conversations he must have with his master, apologies he must give, but Obi-Wan meditates long and hard and determines that this is where the force is calling him and so he leaves the order just after his 18th birthday.
Qui-Gon is devastated at first. But Obi-Wan is no Xanatos - he is not leaving for power, or due to the failings of his master, but for love and the chance to bring about peace to a war-torn planet, and maybe Qui-Gon can live with that. He stays for their wedding, which for all its simplicity given the limited resources is no less beautiful. Qui-Gon does not cry, but his eyes are suspiciously wet and anyone with a hint of Force sensitivity can feel his love and pride half a planet away. Obi-Wan may still have his doubts about leaving, but having his former master's support means the world. Their bond never truly breaks, and frequent holocalls ensure that Qui-Gon is up to date with what his former apprentice is up to (Satine is not above snitching to him about Obi-Wan's reckless stunts in the hope that he can guilt her husband into behaving, and Qui-Gon is thankful for her efforts to keep their relationship strong. He is growing quite fond of Obi-Wan's lady love.).
But it is lonely in the temple without his padawan. And increasingly Qui-Gon is growing frustrated with the senate interference in Jedi activities. The missions he is sent on seem like futile wastes of time, and while he never thought he would say it, he is beginning to see Master Dooku's point about the systemic corruption being too entrenched to overcome. Honestly, these days he suspects he'd do more good running around the galaxy as some kind of vigilante peacekeeper than negotiating yet another inane trade deal that should have been resolved weeks earlier if it weren't for the egos involved... the force pings. Oh.  Qui-Gon Jinn is a master of the living force, of the here and now, and here and now the force is telling him that maybe that's not such a bad idea.
Truthfully there is little left for him in the Temple; Tahl, Master Dooku, Obi-Wan - so many of those close to him are gone. All that keeps him here is his duty, and as a Jedi is his ultimate duty not to the Force? It would be nice to pay Obi-Wan a visit, maybe take a side trip to Serreno to see what his old master is up to these days...
So Qui-Gon leaves, not quite knowing what his plans are but trusting in the will of the Force. He initially sets up on Mandalore, where Obi-Wan and Satine are more than happy to have him (once Qui-Gon has finished convincing his not-son that his leaving the order was not his fault. Satine does not permit emotional constipation in her palace after all.), but soon finds himself restless and sets out again, promising not to get in too much trouble. Obi-Wan sighs and Satine starts ordering the set of armour she knows he's going to need when it comes time to rescue his old master. After all, their future children should have at least one Grandparent to look up to right?
The Force takes him to Tatooine, where an investigation of Gardulla the Hutt ends up with him befriending a local mother and her toddler and confronting the reality of slavery on the Outer Rim. The Jedi aren't coming to free the slaves, but Qui-Gon's no longer just a Jedi is he? And he sees Shmi worry over Little Ani (So strong in the force! And yet so unlikely to ever be found and brought to the temple...) and decides that maybe he can't save them all, but there's no reason he can't try and help those he can. A bit of offhand gambling during the negotiations, a minor favour of two (that the Hutt doesn't realise will end up backfiring but Qui-Gon does) and Qui-Gon Jinn is up a large sum of credits and two newly freed Skywalkers.
(It should be noted that as there are a lack of facilities to provide a midichlorian count, and Shmi is still somewhat reluctant to admit to the whole "virgin birth" thing, Qui- Gon considers Anakin Skywalker to be a strong and promising child but not exactly miraculous. Cute though. Very cute. He likes to fall asleep against his shoulder and Qui-Gon gets nostalgic about all the times Obi-Wan did the same. Shmi looks on, and thinks.)
They head to Mandalore to get the chips out (and to show Obi-Wan that his father old master is safe and well - minus a cracked rib of two) and  Qui-Gon Jinn is faced with a major dilemma. He really should be encouraging Shmi to consider sending Ani to the temple, where his talents can be trained, but… he looks to where Shmi and Satine are beaming as they watch Anakin attempt to sneak up on Obi-Wan who is assiduously pretending to ignore the toddler's giggles as he reads the latest reports on the rebuilding effort. Anakin inexplicably adores Obi-Wan, and it is to all appearances, mutual.  Qui-Gon has no desire to hurt his former Padawan again, and how could he be so hypocritical as to send little Ani off to an institution he’s not sure he believes in anymore? The question is rendered moot when Shmi bluntly tells him the only ones she trusts with Anakin are currently in the palace, and if he needs teaching Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan can do it. The idea is honestly a little uncomfortable for the pair of former Jedi, but they're coming to terms with what the Force seems to be asking of them.
Which in Qui-Gon’s case seems to mean a lot of trips to the outer rim among the poor and downtrodden - oddly enough Shmi suddenly decides to come with him, claiming that Ani is safe as he can be on Mandalore, she’s familiar with some of the more unsavory parts of the galaxy and Qui-Gon needs someone to watch his back. He’s just glad for the company,  particularly when he does end up paying a visit to Serenno. Watching a former slave look Dooku in the eye and calmly and quietly call bullshit on his arguments surrounding the role of the trading unions is worth every moment. Honestly, while he may have a point about corruption within the Republic, Qui-Gon is getting a little creeped out by his former Master’s insistence on the need for strong leadership and a firm hand. It sounds like he’s advocating open conflict, and war isn’t good for anyone!
So he attempts to make his goodbyes, but Dooku is reluctant to let them leave, which means it’s time to implement the old “disappear and claim you had a vision” trick. And ok, so I won't go into details, but after a long and complex series of events involving a freight hauler, eight barrels of spiked Telosian Brandy, three janitor droids and a Twilek Dance Company they manage to make it off planet and into Hutt space where they can disappear for a bit.
But a Skywalker is still a Skywalker, not matter how much sense she has, and Qui-Gon Jinn is as much a trouble-magnet as the rest of his line, so thanks to yet another strange convergence of events involving an attempted kidnapping, five tonnes of explosives, a backroom bar on Ord Mantell, a missing shipment of Spice, an insurrection on a mining colony,  uncountable huttese expletives, one inspirational speech, a cache of heavy weapons and no less than eight marriage proposals, Qui-Gon Jinn finds himself the captain of a small fleet of ships and a band of untrained but passionate freedom fighters. Shmi has never laughed so much in her entire life!
Qui-Gon does what he does best and attempts to talk his way out of it, but it is to no avail; “Captain Jinn” is an inspiration to them all, his dedication is unparalleled and they will do all they can to aid him in his quest to bring justice to the galaxy!  Qui-Gon panics and calls in the cavalry. Unfortunately for him Satine thinks it’s a brilliant idea.
Because while she adores her husband, the Duchess of Mandalore has noticed that recently he seems to be going a little stir crazy. For all his denials Obi-Wan is a man of action, and things have calmed enough that he needs a distraction lest she start throwing martini glasses at him to make him stop hovering! Assisting a band of “pirates” in undermining the various interests who take advantage of the lawless nature of the Outer Rim to spread their influence and at the same time giving him the chance to spend time with Qui-Gon  seems like an excellent way to keep him occupied. Also, as Shmi points out, it’s exactly the type of thing that Mandalorians go gaga for - heroic warriors secretly taking out evildoers and doing good while dramatically declaring their own villainy, why it seems like the perfect outlet for those Mandalorians who long for the glory found in days of old!
She’s right. There are plenty of volunteers willing to follow their Duchess’ dashing husband to join his father mentor in cleaning up the Outer Rim. They start out small, intercepting a shipment of slaves, diverting a cargo of pharmaceuticals to a planet in urgent need of medicine, confiscating a hold full of illegal weaponry. But soon they grow bolder, raiding larger and larger targets, always making sure that those they hit deserve it and will only bring themselves greater trouble if they make a fuss about the loss of their ill-gotten gains. Soon their little group has carved out quite a solid support base, and while they never stop wondering why the Force seems so happy about this turn of events, the former Jedi actually begin to enjoy their work. They’re slowly making progress, and eventually they know enough momentum will build that uniting this part of the galaxy and freeing the slaves may one day be feasible. Also, it’s really really pissing off both the Senate and the Order, which means they must be doing something right.
And that is how Qui-Gon Jinn becomes a Pirate King, the Scourge of Slavers, Hassler of Hutts, Bane of the Banking Clan and Terror of the Techno Union. Dooku is grinding his teeth into dust with frustration. Especially since all his correspondence suggesting an alliance is either returned unopened or overwritten with sarcastic commentary and a suggestion to go deep throat a lightsaber.
That’s more than enough for now, I need some sleep, but there is more to this verse I’ve worked out. Tune in next time for “Naboo’s no good very rotten day aka Padme Amidala, Pirate Queen in Exile” “The clone wars start but the clones are late to the party” “Qui-Gon discovers he never actually formally quit the Jedi, and Yoda and Mace take advantage of this” “Plo Koon admire’s Qui-Gon’s taste in pets” and “Oh god, Anakin Skywalker, Mandalorian Pirate Prince, what have I done?”...
