Station 8: Reise nach Miami mit Zwischenstopps in Savannah und Jacksonville

Savannah:

Da der Weg nach Miami auf einmal zu lang gewesen wäre, legte ich in den folgenden zwei Tagen Zwischenstopps in Savannah, Georgia, und Jacksonville, Florida, ein. Nach nur zwei Stunden Fahrt von Charleston aus kam ich in Savannah an, wo ich netterweise gegen eine kleine Gebühr mein Gepäck an der Busstation lassen durfte. Also machte ich mich mit einem halben Tag Zeit auf, die Stadt zu erkunden. In der Bauweise der Häuser Charleston ähnlich, fallen hier jedoch die vielen kleinen begrünten Plätze im historischen Viertel auf, die mit kleinen Springbrunnen ein idyllisches Stadtbild erzeugen. Auch der breit angelegte Forsyth-Park bot breite Alleen und eine klasse Jazzband, die dort live spielte. Beim Einbruch der Dunkelheit entlang des Hafens am Savannah River entlanglaufend und im Anschluss in das Barviertel der Stadt gehend verbrachte ich den weiteren Abend, wobei ich nach einiger Suche ein geeignetes Etablissement fand, in dem ich die nächsten Stunden verbringen konnte. Hier spielten zwei Reggaebands hintereinander und sorgten für eine ausgelassene Stimmung. Nachdem das Konzert beendet war ging ich zurück zur Busstation, da hier um 6 Uhr morgens mein Bus abfahren sollte. Nach einigen semibequemen Stunden am Busbahnhof ging es weiter nach Jacksonville, wo ich eine Karte für das NFL-Spiel Cinncinati Bengals @ Jacksonville Jaguars online gekauft hatte.

Jacksonville:

Nach weiteren zwei Stunden Fahrt hier angekommen, hatte ich zunächst einige Probleme, da es an dieser Station nicht möglich war, das Gepäck abzugeben, es aber verboten ist, Taschen mit ins Stadion zu nehmen. Nachdem ich eine Weile erfolglos versucht hatte, Schließfächer oder ähnliches ausfindig zu machen, ließ sich der Verantwortliche der Station aufgrund meiner misslichen Lage und seiner persönlichen Begeisterung für das Spiel erweichen und ich durfte meinen Rucksack in einen abgesicherten Raum bringen, nachdem wir eine Weile über Football gequatscht hatten. Im Anschluss machte ich mich zu Fuß auf den Weg zum Stadion. Der Eindruck der Stadt Jacksonville, den ich dabei gewinnen konnte, lässt sich in einigen wenigen Sätzen wiedergeben. Viel Industrie, wenig Tourismus, sonntags außer Football nicht viel los. Je näher ich jedoch dem Stadion kam, desto belebter wurde es. Es erschien mir wie eine Pilgerreise, die tausende türkisgekleidete Menschen zum Everbankfield unternahmen, die meisten davon jedoch mit dem Auto. Beim sogenannten Tailgate, also den Parkplatzpartys inklusive BBQ vor den Footballspielen, konnte ich eine Gruppe junger Ortsansässiger antreffen, die mich mit Bier versorgten und mit denen ich interessante Gespräche über Politik, Militär und Unterschiede zwischen Europa und den USA führen konnte – auffällig war, dass Jacksonville aufgrund zweier nahgelegener Basen stark militärisch geprägt ist – vor dem Spiel machten Kampfjets einige Kunststücke über dem Stadion. Auch die republikanische Grundhaltung und der stereotypisch weiße Amerikaner waren hier zu finden, was jedoch nach den liberalen Großstädten mit vielen weltoffenen, liberalen Menschen eine interessante Abwechslung bot, da ich auch Trump befürwortende Perspektiven hier wahrnehmen konnte.

Das Spiel selbst war spannend und beeindruckend – fast 70.000 Fans kreierten eine lautstarke Kulisse – außerdem gewann das Heimteam, was die Stimmung nur noch weiter anheizte. Auch nach dem Spiel ging die Party noch etwas weiter – die Trommlergruppe des Vereins gab ein kleines Extrakonzert vor dem Eingang. Nachdem ich mich von der Gruppe verabschiedet hatte, ging es zurück zur Busstation, von wo aus ich gegen Abend aus weiter nach Miami fuhr. Dort um 5 Uhr morgens angekommen, begann eine etwas gemütlichere Woche, über die in der Folge berichtet werden soll. Diese Tage voller Reisestrapazen, aber vielen neuen, extrem unterschiedlichen Eindrücke dieses großen Landes erweiterten meinen Horizont erneut und nachhaltig – das historische Savannah und das industrie- und militärgeprägte Jacksonville als zwei krasse Gegensätze nicht weit von einander entfernt.
