My feelings for you go far beyond friendship.

It’s simple, that thought. It drops into his mind like rain on an otherwise unremarkable gray day, one where he’s not particularly burdened by the work of caring for his free company because Alan has shown up for a visit. Busari’s out—adventuring again, paying their bills—so it’s him and the Nagae sisters and Enkhtuya, and Harumi’s gotten Alan to help with lunch for their clients. Alan fits in like he was born to be standing at the counter chopping lettuce, sleeves rolled up to reveal sinewy forearms and an escaping tendril of brown hair flopping in his face. Evrard’s fingers itch to push it back, but—Alan’s wearing his bandana and it wouldn’t be worth the risk of revealing his third eye. Yes.

They’ve been closer. They’d had to share a bed when he first hauled an injured decurion out of the snow, for the Fury’s sake. (And he’d been warm and strong and Evrard is not going to think about that now.) But sitting on this bench, just looking at him from across the room, Evrard’s heart lodges in his throat.

He’s known Alan is attractive. He isn’t blind. And watching him in battle...well, that would stir the blood of a dead man. But attraction is one thing, easily ignored. The slowly spreading warmth through Evrard’s chest at the sight of Alan Vesper simply existing in his space, bumping Harumi lightly out of the way and cracking a faint smile at something she’s said, as far from the brittle sharp edges of Alanais pyr Venditor as it’s possible to be—

No. They are friends. They will only ever be friends. He has a lover he is quite fond of, thank you, and Alan has a girlfriend he is wild about and who would probably bite his face off if she even thought he was competition. Not that he is. He won’t be.

“Evrard!” Alan calls. “You want anything?”

He shakes his head, not trusting himself to speak.

Alan shrugs and continues assembling sandwiches. Evrard sends a fervent prayer to the Fury.

The day passes.

Two years pass.

He is single, now. Camp Broken Glass is nothing like the oven-baked heat of Ul’dah. Alan has grown braver, bolder, more sure of himself. More beautiful. His girlfriend is here as well, and she is the bright brief flash of lightning across his eyelids. When they aren’t off fighting or working to make the lives of the Garleans easier, they’re curled together like two crescent moons. He can’t even be jealous. (He could. But they adore each other, and he isn’t sure which of them he envies more.)

Once again, he’s sitting back and watching Alan work. This time he’s sipping ether potions and rolling bandages, while Alan’s taken over another table in the mess hall in the service of entirely disassembling and cleaning his gunblade. Gantsetseg is leaning over the back of his chair, gesturing animatedly as she suggests upgrades that she swears will not explode in his hands. Alan hums thoughtfully as he tightens a screw; he’s wearing fingerless gloves that are almost worse for the direction of Evrard’s thoughts than bare hands would have been.

(He broke his vow of chastity long ago, with a man who’s turned out to be unworthy of it. He keeps thinking about that tiny bed in Our Lady’s Mercy with the wind hissing through the cracks and Alanais pyr Venditor curled up between him and the wall.)

Evrard takes one slow breath. Another. Another.

Gantsetseg’s tail has flipped lazily into Alan’s lap. He doesn’t seem to mind the spikes at all.

I...

He doesn’t even let himself finish the thought.

Alan is grinning. It’s not at him.

He’s pretty sure the Fury won’t help him now.

Magneto, Enjolras, Louise Michel, Marat, Bester. Enjoy! ;-)

Invite to dinner with parents: So my parents are actually pretty chill in very small doses (holidays) when they don’t... I don’t even know, possibly intimidate my dad. 5. Bester would intimidate my dad. Also, my family thinks so loudly (we’re all passive-agressive little shits and make our thoughts obvious), which would probably give Bester a headache. 4. Enjolras would not get along with my family’s sense of humor, and my dad might get into a debate with him, which would involve, one second them agreeing wholeheartedly, and the next Enjolras just staring at him and backing away, and my mom’s in particular with Ryder family sense of humor, well. 3. Louise Michel would like my mom. My mom would generally like her. Then Louise Michel would say something like we should shoot Trump and his cronies. Also, I would not want to subject her to my mom in a “mmm, tasty, tasty meat” mood, because then Louise Michel would speechify at her. 2/1. Marat would be interesting. I think my parents would actually like him. He’s a journalist, and would probably be maintaining a very popular blog. He’s generally right and very well researched. 2/1. My dad would like Magneto, though the two of them would get into debates. Magneto’s speechifying would get my dad on his side very quickly. My mom would probably like him too, actually, but would be a little intimidated by his politics. She would definitely be more of a Professor X person now, but they’d share stories of the 60s. And then discuss their grandchildren. Also Magneto wouldn’t be entirely convinced my mom wasn’t a mutant, because of her ability to tell what the weather’s going to do. So Magneto or Marat.

Shipwrecked on desert island with: 1. Magneto, because chances are he’d determine he liked it enough to turn it into his supervillain lair. 2. Bester - he could call for help 3. Marat- doctor 4.Louise Michel - has been on an island before  5. Enjolras - would be useless on an deserted island

In a car chase with: 1. I would give anything to be in the same car in a car chase with Bester, watching how he handles vehicles with one of his hands paralyzed. We would get into conversations about his left hand and my right hand and various doctors underestimating us (in my case, it healed; in his case, he learned to be a pilot without use of it). 2. Marat would be fun. 3. Magneto 4. Louise Michel 5. Enjolras

Shopping for formal wear with: 1. Bester, he’s the only one who has any real sense of what formal wear is. 2. Enjolras 3. Louise Michel 4. Magneto 5. Marat

On the run from corrupt authority figures with: 1/2. Louise Michel or Enjolras have the best understanding of on the run from corrupt authority figures. 3. Marat, I love you, but like fuck I am getting into that sewer with you, but actually you do have a fairly good understanding of it too. 4. Mags, I love you, but you don’t reallly have a good understanding that “on the run” doesn’t always mean “taking a stand.” 5. Bester, baby, you don’t either, and so you make a great inside man from whom to find out what said corrupt figures are up to.

Trying to fix broken-down automobile in the rain with: 1/2. Mags or Bester. For obvious reasons. Mags would be able to feel where it’s broken and fix it. Bester could just pull it from the mind of a local mechanic. 3. Marat - you would just be able to fix it. Somehow 4. Louise Michel 5. Enjolras

Captured by supervillain with: 1. Um. Umm.... Magneto... is a supervillain and has gone up against other supervillains before.

Wake up handcuffed to: 2/3. Enjolras or Louise Michel. 1. Actually, no wait. Mags, because handcuffs are metal. 4. Bester - probably has lockpicking skills, and if he doesn’t he would soon 5. Marat

Fake-married to for undercover reasons: 1/2. Enjolras or Bester.

To cut and style my hair: 1. Louise Michel 2. Magneto 3/4/5: the others no thanks

To drag them away from a big fight because they’re injured: All of these losers, tbh. Bester I could trust to do ii for himself. The others, not so much.

To drag me away from a big fight because I’M injured: None of these people would do that.

Rewatch my favourite movie/show with: While I would love to subject all these nerds to Prison Break, most of them have had issues with being behind bars and would have PTSD flashbacks. 1. So Marat would probably get a kick out of it. Too much of a kick out of it probably, but he’s Marat. 2. Bester would likely see too much of himself in Mahone, which wouldn’t be good. My favorite movie is With Fire and Sword. 1/2. Marat or Bester would probably like it most.

Leave in charge of my home while I’m away: I would trust absolutely zero of these people in my home while I am away. 1. Louise Michel would just have her cats staying there and would use the place to sleep, 2. Bester or 3. Marat.

Study for an exam with: 1. Louise Michel, who was an actual teacher. 2. Or Enjolras, because we’d be studying similar subjects.

Sent to assassinate me: Umm.. Bester would be the only one sent to do anything.

Cook dinner for: 1. Louise Michel, because she needs it. (Actually I’d first start her off on oatmeal and smoothies and Ready to Use Therapeutic Food and then work up to modern food, because I’d be worried about killing her stomach. 2. Magneto, I would love to have Magneto at one of our Pesach dinners. 3. Bester, would appreciate being made dinner, particularly if I invited him to bring his kid and let her help make it. 4. Marat 5. Enjolras

Get into massive argument with: 2/3. Louise Michel or Enjolras probably. 1. Or Bester. Actually, definitely Bester. 4. Magneto. 5. Marat

Get caught in a questionable position with: any of them!!!

Work as bodyguard for: 1/2. Magneto or Louise Michel. 3. Marat, while I would love this position, Simone Evrard already has it covered, except when Marat told her to let Charlotte past. 4. Bester, I fell I would not be qualified for this position 5. Enjolras, does not need a bodyguard

She’d fallen asleep listening to the rain. They all had—her and Alan, with Evrard dozing next to them. She was pretty sure the men were holding hands, which always made her heart feel like a rising balloon. (Seriously, her cousin had been a fucking idiot to let Ev go. Ev was great. He was definitely going to be her second husband.) The boat rocking gently underneath them had made it impossible for her to keep her eyes open.

The crack of thunder shattered her dreamless sleep.

Alan bolted awake, one hand going for the gunblade he wasn’t wearing. Evrard clawed his way out of the blankets with a hiss, ears flat back like a cat’s and those teeth (“not fangs, Duskwights do not have fangs, I have no idea what you’re talking about”) bared as though he was planning to bite whoever had woken him.

Gan groaned and stretched, tail curling. Well, she was definitely awake now. “What th’ fuck...?”

Sighing, Evrard raked his hair back from his face. Unlike when she did it with hers, it actually stayed raked back. “Ah,” he muttered, ears rotating. “It seems we have run into a storm.”

“Should we...do something?” That was Alan, frowning in the way that meant he was fairly sure the answer was yes, but was still working out whether he was allowed to help with anything that couldn’t be solved by shooting the problem.

Evrard glanced at both of them, his tone wary. “Have either of you ever been on a ship in a storm before? Because I have not.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “Yes.” It had only been the one time, but she wasn’t about to forget it in a hurry. The Summer Wind had been a dinghy compared to this galleon, and she’d been fine. Thunder won’t hurt me. I was born for this.

Evrard flushed dark, ears flicking. “Well, then. By all means, lead the way.”

He didn’t have to tell her twice. She charged up the stairs to the rain-washed deck, barely looking back to see if Evrard and Alan followed her.

Upstairs, all was darkness and chaos, lit only by flashes of lightning and swinging lanterns. For a moment she just stood on the stairs, taking in the scene. Assess. Plan. Then act. Alan had learned that in the Garlean officers’ academy, and as much as she hated giving the Garlean Empire credit for anything her Al had picked up in Evil Shite Bastard School she had to admit it was pretty useful. Sailors rushed hither and yon in the rigging, and she dismissed them with a glance—she’d only get in the way.

Much like the way their current employer was. Koana, the Second Promise of Tuliyollal, was probably at least as smart as Alphy and had made about the same first impression. He was currently dithering near the main mast, utterly soaked, with his tail puffed out like a bottlebrush. When he spotted them, his ears went back. “What are you doing here?!”

“Helping!” Alan snapped.

He was rattled—good, he’d learned to respect Alan’s Decurion Voice—but he visibly sucked in a breath and snapped back, “Get the shield generator up!”

Gan was already moving, scrambling across the deck. “On it!” She was vaguely aware of sailors bellowing orders and her men separating for their own tasks—Alan joining Thancred in hauling on the ropes, Evrard and Urianger setting up a space belowdecks to treat the wounded—but they didn’t matter yet. The shield generator did. They were the tallest thing around for malms of ocean, and even she couldn’t survive a direct strike.

...Probably. She wasn’t going to risk it either way; she might be blessed by Azim, but Alan? Evrard? The rest of the crew? They needed her.

Slipping on soaked wooden planks, tail lashing across spars and line and shins as a counterbalance, she shot across to the mid deck to where the shield generator was charging up. As she watched, a marker lit up. Seventy-five percent power.

Lightning struck the water, malms away but still too bright. When she could see again, another marker was lit. Eighty-five percent.

Good enough.

She arrested her momentum with her full body weight on the console, shoving herself upright just enough to key in the commands. The four-button sequence had been the result of a lot of Ironworks focus testing—it cost precious time, but it took up less room and was a lot harder to hit accidentally than the old lever or button designs. She had it memorized. Still, she didn’t dare breathe until the shield crackled into being around their ship, the same glittering crystalline orb that had faced Leviathan and won.

She opened her mouth to shriek her confirmation that the shield was up, they were safe—

And the world fell apart in a boneshaking wall of white.

prompt 27: hail

Alan and the Gallii siblings and even the refugees all insist this is a pleasant spring day, that they could hardly hope for better weather at this time of year. Evrard, huddled by the stove, has been made intensely aware of multiple possible reasons for the Garlean predilection towards helmets as a fashion statement.

He’d tried to go outside earlier, just to see how the infirmary was getting on. A fist-sized ball of hail had landed precisely between his scarf and shirt collar, where it had proceeded to melt almost instantly into gray slush. He’s still shivering, even with his magic to warm him. Ishgard has spent years in the grip of an eternal winter, but at the very least it’s usually dry. If they have anything to fear from the sky, it’s Dravanians, not frozen chunks of ice.

The Mol woman who takes the seat next to him isn’t anyone he recognizes, but the tone of her voice as she mutters to herself in Xaelic is deeply familiar. He nods at her, and they share a look of deep understanding before she switches to Common and says, “And I thought the spring-melt on the Steppes was bad.”

He grimaces. “Ah, I’ve heard of that.” He has. Busari has complained about it at great length and occasionally volume, with occasional asides in the vein of it at least being healthy for scale care. “I was about to say the same thing about Coerthan rain.”

Judging by her face, while she can’t point to Coerthas on a map she can certainly imagine what he means. She rummages in the front pocket of her fur-lined deel for a moment before pulling out a stoppered clay flask. “One of the engineers gave me this. They say it helps.”

He takes it, squinting at the too-angular Garlean letters. “Vodka. ‘Tis a type of alcoholic spirit. Very strong, I’ve been told.”

She eyes it—and him—warily. “You first.”

Well, he is at least a fulm taller than her. Uncorking the flask and mentally consigning his soul to the Fury, he takes a swig.

When he’s finished coughing, he has to admit he does feel warmer.

omigod okay so like i've had these characters for nearly 2 years now (2 years on the 11th !!) so i cant possibly tell you EVERYTHING about them but I CAN tell you the basics !!!

those basics being they're from a story set in an apocalyptic future, where the System (run by The Emperor) has control over the City, the last form of advanced civilization left in the cold, barren wasteland that Earth has become.

however, there are other civilizations that exist outside of the City, such as the one i call the Underground, where my ocs live !!

the main group are a hodgepodge family of people who have either managed to escape the City, or have lived outside of its walls their entire lives. I'm trying not to give too much away because one day i hope to one day make a full comic out of this story, but I can tell you a lil about each character !!

Starting with the main 3, Oliver O'Brien (he/him), Evrard Raine(he/him), and Kid Raine(-O'Brien)(they/them)

This trio met when trying to escape the City at the same time. Evrard was running with Kid, who was barely 6 at the time, and with Oliver's help, the trio got past the guarded walls. With more of Oliver's help, Ev and Kid managed to not die in the harsh conditions, and eventually they found themselves at the Underground !!!

There they found some new, and old, faces- such as Tess O'Brien(he/they), Oliver's twin that he vaguely remembers having (but did not grow up with) who was Evrard's childhood best friend until he disappeared many years ago-

Madison Cabot(she/her), also an old friend from the city who escaped.

Phoenix Morin(they/them) (design's still in the works), who's lived in the Underground their whole life, and is thrilled to fill newcomers in on things they never learned inside the walls, such as Romance and Dating !!

and Dixie Cabot(she/her), a child whom escaped with Madi and was later adopted by her :)

There are more- PLENTY more characters in this story, such as the UPEs, but I don't want to give TOO much away, in case I do get around to making that comic ;)
