Catholics being both oppressors and targets of oppression are two things that absolutely can and do co-exist and yet Catholics will have a meltdown if you even so much as imply that they and their church are responsible for or contribute to the marginalization and oppression of other people. Catholicism isn’t all purity. It’s creepy. A guy in a robe mysteriously chants in whispers and gives us flesh to eat. We proceed in this ritual by drinking blood. Transfixed by the gory image of a young man covered in blood hanging by nails on a tree, we whisper in centuries-old chants, reflecting on our impending death. On display in many of these hallowed halls of ritualistic worship are bodies, extremities, relics of dead people from centuries past. It’s no wonder many Catholics find themselves haunted.

even though i cannot leave the church completely yet i am finding tiny ways to rebel against it. i challenge myself to not utter a word throughout mass. to not sing any songs, even though my fingers thrum the melodies i have played for so long. when i am reciting the rosary with my family i allow my emphasis to fall on the words "women" and "womb" because i am done with women being prosecuted by the church. for every bead i envision a different goddess to pray to. when i cross myself i whisper: "in the name of the mother, the children, and earthly beings."
